    I feel like i need to share a story here. I broke my distal humerus in arm wrestling in January 2021. Got my arm surgery 7 days later (with plate and screws) no damage to the nerve whatsoever. The recovery was speedy, in end of February i managed to get back to gym,( i had already in that moment full motion back) started to get that strength back. Now its been roughly over 6 months from the surgery, i gained all muscle mass and strength back. Last 2 months been great, right at the moment i don't feel like the plate disturbs me at all. I can't tell any difference between left and right arm. Only difference is the huge fking scar. About 20cm long.
    Bench pressing i increased personal best 145kg, former 140kg before injury. Im 82kg, 178cm tall. Good luck everyone.

    Had a similar incident. After my fracture, I had a big plate with 6 screws, my surgeon was a complete a**hole (not going into details), at the end of the surgery he said loud and clear "whoever wants to take his plate off, be my guest, but it won't be me". He did a good job, despite everything said, no palsy, I could go to the gym, lift weights, I did feel a tiny numbness while doing shoulder shrugs, though. After talking to 5 doctors, I did found one who was willing to help me get my plate off, at 1 year and 6 months post surgery. Everything went well, I had to undergo the surgery in a private hospital (meaning I had to pay for everything), main cause being that this doctor only had a spot available at a state hospital after 6 months. And I think the decision was good, because he gave me the plate and a hole had some bone tied to it that couldn't go off, so I would advise not to wait too much for the removal surgery if you decide for it. I'd wanna thank everyone for sharing their story because it helped me understand better my accident and decide what to do. Right now I'm back in the gym, back playing tennis, and even the numbness disappeared. And for everyone who is still recovering after this kind of accident, keep on fighting, brothers, and be optimistic !

    I just had the plate removed two days ago on Dec 9th 2022. It went perfectly!!! No damage at all to the radial nerve. It is a breeze compared to first surgery: ORIF. I have great mobility already and not too much pain. Can’t straighten elbow completely yet but getting close. Can flex bicep almost fully. Feels like I’ll be in very good shape in 3 days. I broke my left arm from armwrestling either 🤦🏻‍♂️ , ’‘funny‘‘ thing I found this occur pretty often.
    It’s nearly 6 weeks now after the operation with plates and screws and I can hold a bottle of water , or open it or grocery story and I don’t feel any pain . The only thing that is still not normal a bit of swelling and can’t close my elbow 100% , it’s going like around 70% then the scars starts to feel sharp and like the skin doesn’t let the elbow to bend 100% . Other than that it seems everything pretty good .
    I have 8 screws and a plate that looks like yours , and since i want to train hard like u was doing before i want the metal to be removed that my bone not only can heal 100% but that it can get stronger with the time from weight lifting . Thanks for making a Video , much appreciated 🙏🏻

      Get well soon. Your arm will get the full range of motions in a few weeks, don't worry about that. And of course, if you want to live perfectly normal and active life the plate should be removed in a year after the surgery. Let me share my current predicament. I broke my humerus shaft in September 2022 arm wrestling. It was a nasty spiral fracture. Got surgery a week later with a plate and 10 screws installed. Before the break, I worked out a lot. Mainly for mass and strength and I was about 215lbs lean. I tried slowly getting back into the gym after the doctor cleared me to exercise, but it took a while. I always had pain in the area where my bone broke, but it was manageable. About 4 months go by and I am lifting pretty normally except I cannot press due to pain in the elbow of the arm I broke. I also developed unbearable shoulder pain in that arm, so I completely stopped working out. Got really serious about PT and flexibility from then. The issue is that I have been consistent with PT and rest for about 4 months and I still have a lot of pain in my elbow and shoulder and cannot press any weight. I can't throw a football, frisbee, throw a punch, or really do much at all with this arm. I haven't hit upper body in a long time and I have lost about 20 lbs. My doctor has advised against removing the hardware, but my theory is that the hardware is the cause of all this pain. I feel like it is restricting circulation, mobility, and bothers the nerves. Also, there is a lot of tissue build up around the plate near my elbow that I think has a lot to do with my elbow being unable to heal. He said that he'd do the surgery to remove the hardware, but thinks I'd be better off leaving it in due to the risk of a re-brake or nerve damage. I am honestly not sure what to do.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 10 měsíci +1

      There's no normal life with the hardware in your body. Lots of people experience the same symptoms and discomfort during physical activity. If you're over 50, I'd live with the plate, and if you're young and active, get rid of it.

    Not sure how comments can be seen of replying. Will post my reply here to keep discussion going and visible:
    Leon and original poster; my computer dude ;) I have to specifically thank you both. This video addressed my exact concern. And León, your concern and subsequent nerve damage is my biggest fear. But I gather you fully recovered? Very good to hear.
    On Super Bowl Sunday February 21st 2021, I spiral fractured my distal left humerus and displaced it. About the lower 3rd between bicep and elbow. Nasty snap and separation. I posted a video of the arm breaking here on CZcams. It is crazy. Like a gunshot. Horrific and we all know the pain.
    Just today I finally booked surgery for Dec 8th to remove the plates and screws for the EXACT reason Mr computer kindly shared. I have popping, locking, crunching and pain by the tricep when working out. Before the accident, I was doing 3 sets of 16 pull ups. 48 a day. Can’t do one now. I can lift, but it hurts and clicks and all sorts of crap. It just sucks. So you confirmed exactly what I imagined: the muscles and bone are grabbing onto sharp screws and metal and consequently: it hurts. So the doctor warned me emphatically about radial nerve damage risk now. No damage to nerve to date. It is a huge and risky gamble, but I have to do this. And yes, I just turned 50. My dad passed away a year ago at 98, so I’m basically half way potentially. So I’ve been stressing, but I’ve lost my fitness and can not regain it unless I get rid of this hardware. And your full recovery León, has reassured me. If it gets damaged: I’ll keep rehabbing and fight through it. I have the same great surgeon, so he has every note and detail recorded precisely.
    For other people reading; my recovery was amazingly fast. So have faith. I did get banned for life from the Facebook support group for essentially… “showing off” my recovery. I posted a video of me curling 75 lbs barbell on April 8th, basically two months later. I’ll post it now as inspiration. But despite being as sensitive as I could, they banned me because they said it was rubbing it in the face of those with tragically terrible recovery hardships. Very sad. But I HAD TO share what is possible. Curling 75 lbs exactly 2 months later. That is important to weight trainers like many posting here. When you know it CAN BE DONE…. People do it!!! And best advice I can give everyone: get out of your sling ASAFP!!! I was out of my sling within 3 days. Would put it back on when it hurt and to rest. I had bandages off and just staples to show within 5 days. Ditched splint within a week around the house and made VERY sure to not bang it. I wore it for protection when out and about.
    But thank you guys for this encouraging comments section. I wish they hadn’t banned me because I would have been very supportive and active in answering questions. It is terrifying and future is scary. But I’d almost always say install the hardware, heal and remove the hardware. I’ll be sure to check back and post and answer any questions I can. I’ll put a link to my two videos here. It is rough watching other people’s videos, but not mine breaking. Doesn’t bother me. But be warned it is awful.

    Hello everyone,
    short to me About 13 years ago (23 years old at the time) I also sustained a spiral fracture of my upper arm while arm wrestling. The radial nerve was not injured during the operation, but the nerve was initially disturbed due to the blood effusion in the arm, which led to a partial radial paresis in me. I couldn't move my hand properly for about 3-4 months. Had limitations in motor skills.. Etc. After continuous physical therapy, the nerve had recovered. Except for a minimal decrease in strength compared to my other hand, full motion is back. The reduction in strength can be seen, for example, with a firm handshake. The doctor who was operating at the time had expressly advised me never to even begin to think about removing material, which meant that I never thought about it for the first 5 years, also because of what I had experienced Paresis at the time that really got on my nerves as a young person. Nonetheless, I too had limitations to this day, which correspond fairly well to the previous speakers. I have pain, for example, when I hold dumbbells on the left and right and want to train my shoulders.. The pivoting movement upwards where the arms go away from the body.. From a certain angle, a spraining pain that restricts me or not the exercise at all can run..Furthermore, I also have pain with backward movements, such as throwing something..Z. B. At this moment a pain runs through the whole arm 3 doctors and they all recommended that I refrain from the surgery even after such a long time simply due to the risk of injuring the radials during a material removal, for advice?

      If your radial nerve wasn't damaged and the bones aligned perfectly there's nothing to worry about in 3-4 month you'll be fine. But get ready for discomfort in the area around the plate when it's cold or during physical activities. The guy in the comments below had very bad experience with removing the plate. And I'm pretty sure it's due to doctor's mistake. Anyway, I haven't seen or heard about any people who lives without any problem or discomfort with the plate. So, think twice about doctor's qualification and the medicine in general in your country. Because it might be tricky. As I said in my video since the plate was removed I returned back into sport and scar is the only thing that reminds me about my bad experience and mistakes in arm wrestling technique. I wish you a quick recovery and good health.

      I would take the risk even if I were 50, because living with that thing inside isn't a normal life. If something were to happen and you broke that arm again with the plate inside, the resulting fracture could cause significant damage and complications in terms of healing and harm to surrounding tissues. I'd wait for at least two more month and then scheduled a surgery. I wish you luck, quick recovery and become a great Goalkeeper.

And in 3 month I started to workout in the gym with light weights and in 6 month with full load. Just find a good surgeon who will make it right and not damage your nerve. Good luck!

    Hi, Great video! Wanted to ask a question, I have plates and screws installed on my right humerus. It's been 2 months since my surgery. If I were to exercise now and put on some muscle by going to the gym again, would I lose my muscle gain when it's time to remove the plates and screws after a year?

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 7 měsíci

      Two month is too early to go to the gym. After removing the plate you have to make a pause for a couple of month until the wholes in the bone feel up and the bone regain its strength. After that your arm will be just like before the fracture no pain or any discomfort.

    Hey so it's me, I broke my humerus ( from the middle ) while arm wrestling. I'd like to ask how long did you wait till removing the plates? Doctor/ Consultants here in Pakistan ( one who performed by surgery a year and fitted a plate and 7-8 screws ) says that it's irremovable. What do you say about this? I have hitted the gym with no issue but yes some weird noises in my arm so I couldn't really focus on many muscles and the exercises. I still can't do dips and pull ups. Things are better now no issue with movement but still life's never the same with the plate. What's your say on this?

      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 2 lety

      My surgeon said that plate removal should be performed 8-12 months after surgery. I did in a year and 7 month and there were some issues with removing screws from the bone. Now I live my normal life and there's not a single sign that my arm was broken (except a scar). My left arm is as strong as my right one. No pain or sort of popping noise or any discomfort.

      I'm not a doctor but what I learned from my case is that once the hardware did its job you can remove it (usually in a year after surgery) and then you can just live your normal life. With the plate inside it may not work that way. During physical activities the plate may irritate internal soft tissues and there's a whole bunch of other potential problems.

      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi there! It was lower third fracture. I had the same feelings and pain in my arm (basically I explained everything in the video). The problem is that your arm will never be the same with the plate inside. When you flex your muscles and do some physical exercises it irritates internal soft tissues, which normally should be attached to the bones. But now there's a plate with screws which are not super smooth. After I removed the plate all pain and weird feelings completely disappeared and my arm as strong as it was before the fracture. If you want to remove the plate do it as quick as possible. In my case it was almost 2 years and it was hard to remove some screws.

    Hello everyone, thanks for sharing this video as it gives me much hope things are going to be better.
    unfortunately I have to join this group as well because of an accident with armwrestling last year in summer. It is quite a pleasure to see similar stories as the trauma has had quite an impact on me. For the moment I have a metal plate of 16 cm and 7 screws in my right arm and a few weeks ago I made an appointment of removing the plate this summer (12/08).
    As I am a lifter as well I always wanted to remove the plate and get rid of the pain it causes. However, I am conscious (and also scared) about the possible risks. After the first surgery when I broke my arm I was quite satisfied with the recovery but there are still some things that really bother me in normal life. I wanted to know if others have similar experiences?
    1. I constantly feel a pression along the length of the scar; first I thought it was the metal plate, but it could be scar tissue as well. When I touch it, it is really hard and stif.
    2. Nerves are not damaged but using my right hand feels different than before, although I can make every movement
    3. Pain while doing workout at the position of the metal plate

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 4 lety +2

      Hey buddy! I wish you good luck and speedy recovery after the surgery. The only risk about the surgery is a chance of nerve damage. So, just find a good surgeon.
      1. The tightening around the scar is normal. You have to massage that area with silicone oil to stretch the skin in that area. You can ask your surgeon to remove the scar tissue and make internal stitches to minimize the scar and then in a few weeks after surgery you can start massaging your scar.
      2. I felt slight numbness around the scar for about 8 month but my movements and coordination were perfect.
      3. There's no normal life with the hardware in your body. When it's done its job you have to remove it, otherwise you can forget about sport and active life. I couldn't even do push-ups or pull-ups with the plate in my body. Didn't even try to lift a barbell.
      So, let us know about your experience after surgery.

However, the doctor said there is nothing to worry about; it will come back (the extension is getting better). When I asked him when I can remove the plate, he said usually after one year if the bone is completely healed. But you have to consider that there is a risk of the nerve getting damaged again. So, I am really confused. What do you suggest for me?

      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 2 měsíci

      Check all the comments here. Lots of people have shared their experiences. Also, read some forums, there's a lot of information on the internet, and basically, almost all people say that there's no normal life with the plate inside. And I'm one of those who can confirm it. If you're over 50, then probably I would leave it inside, but if you're young and active, then living with that plate inside won't be comfortable and even dangerous. If you decide to remove it, do it right in a year, not later, because, like in my case, when I came for removal in a year and a half, there were complications with screw removal.

At the shoulder where its bending when trying to rise, my hand doesn't bend at all and I feel that it goes up a little bit and then my shoulder is moving back when rising, instead of the arm. Hi sir, does the screws not become weak points of your bone? I'm having a titanium implant and I'm scared that the screws inside my bones becomes weak points because I really like going to the gym.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 6 měsíci

      The top and lower screws of the plate create a potential weak point in your bone. If you feel comfortable with the plate inside, experience no pain during workouts, and have no irritation in that area, and if you don't plan to remove the plate, then just don't overload your arm with heavy weights. Just use common sense. For example, during a bench press, it's advisable not to lift anything heavier than 80kg/170lbs.

    Hi E&C, So Glad to see you finally recover and hit back Gym. I have a similar fracture in the middle of my humerus. I have the plates and screw in. It's been a year now and i have fully healed. I want to remove the plates now, however there is a very small chance of nerve damage. As the radial nerve passes exactly there, the surgeon must be careful. Should i be worried or go ahead with the surgery?

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před rokem

      If your surgeon is very skillful and performed a lot of similar surgeries then chances to damage are very low. If you're over 50 and you're not into sports, you don't live active life and the plate doesn't bother you, then just leave it inside. Otherwise the longer you wait the more difficult it will be to remove the screws, just like it was in my case. They wanted to leave two screws inside of my bone but I told them to remove it by any means. The recovery after second surgery was super fast. My arm as strong as it was before the fracture. Only huge scars reminds me about that stupid experience.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 6 měsíci

      The recovery after the plate removal is very fast. In a couple of weeks, your arm will be fully operational, and you won't feel any discomfort or pain. However, you have to wait for the holes in the bone to heal, and it may take up to 4 months. I took some calcium pills to support that process. Then, four months after the surgery, I started to work out with some light weights and do push-ups. Around seven months in, I returned to heavy lifting, but nothing too extreme. I was kind of paranoid, I thought my humerus would snap in that area again, and I would hear that terrible bone-snapping noise. Anyways, after removing the plate, there's not a single sign of pain or discomfort or anything else except for that scar.
      I wish you luck with the surgery and a quick recovery.

    hello there.. i see similar cases to all of us. so here is my story..
    A fine boring night after a gym work out some guys were arm wrestling outside gym and i said to try out.. i was winning and while putting more strength to get him down i heard a noise and felt like like someone punched my arm. i didnt realise it was broken but when i saw others look at me scared and that i was moving my arm but the lower part didnt move i went straight to hospital. they did x rays they suggested me surgery. after a week of asking several doctors some said it will be fixed by its own others surgery.. i didnt know what to do because i am so afraid of needles. on the start of second week i did x rays again and they told me that bones are moved a bit away.. meanwhile i was doing fine with my life i could go to wc alone eat etc. anyway after asking more doctors i decide to do surgery. doctor said it was very good no nerves got damage. when i saw the new x ray indeed the plate covered the big break but i notice a fragment on the otherside not in place or screwd at least close to the rest big bone. he said that this will fill up on its own. i m not expert but shouldnt all fractures screw in place eachother ? next he told me that if i do specific moves it could break the plate. but thr reason i did surgry was to secure better possition because i walk arround all the time.. second day of surgery they took cast of my hand and he told me to put my hand down slowly which i did with some pain. he said elbow movement from 90 to 180 is fine and that i should move my elbow 3 times per day. i left hospital with no cast is that safe /? i mean i walk arround with a sling use my other hand to protect moving the broken one.. my questions are theses ..
    1. my hand is very swell in many places but i can move my fingers.. when swelling goes away ??
    2. the bone fragmrnt not in place wont that ffect anything arround ?
    3. when i sleep i put my elbow on small pilow near my stomach and hand arround my right leg is this a good position /?
    i dont hurt a lot i dont take any pain killers so far..

    Had a question for you. My surgeon removed my plate and screws 3 days ago. He told me that he didn’t remove the two lag screws that were used to first secure the bones together before putting the plate on. He said that the damage to access them was definitely not advisable. He’d have had to drill around all sides and quite deep.
    Did your surgeon first secure your humerus with cross lag screws to pull bones together and in place before putting plates? I know he had to dig out stripped screws. Did he leave anything behind? I’m a bit concerned after hearing that. Healing is going well but I’ll be really pissed if those were the culprits of my workout discomfort. Surgeon didn’t think they would be an issue of any discomfort. He said it was really the tricep not liking the plate and screws. I worry the bone compression presses against the sharp screws and causes discomfort?! In any case, I have 12 fewer screws and a plate gone. I’ll post back.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před rokem +1

      In my case all screws were attached through the plate. I had two stripped screws and like your surgeon said, mine drilled a bunch of holes around the screw to remove it. I think they would left it inside but I insisted to remove it by any means. Technically if the screw is inside the bone and isn't sticking out with sharp edges, you'll be fine.

    • @adrianoaragon
      @adrianoaragon Před rokem

      @@ElectronicsComputers I remembered your case and asked my surgeon if he left the screws in because they stripped. He said not at all. They were deep sunk lag screws that are embedded in the bone and weren’t very accessible. Definitely within the bone. But I just hope the bone compressing onto sharp screw edges doesn’t bother me. I’ve been looking at my X rays and can’t see which ones are the lag screws. I see one that deviates from all the pattern of the other screws, so that might be it. Will get X rays next week. Will post back for others reading this.
      I think you were awake while he operated second time around, no? If I weren’t under general and he told me he were leaving them in, I would have insisted he try and maybe show me a pic to convince me we should abandon them ;-)

My surgeon was laughing at me, when I told him. He said that the bone at the fracture place becomes even stronger that before it. So, just live your normal life and don't do anything stupid like arm wrestling or dangerous tricks on your bike. Check all the comments under this video. Lots of people, myself including were in that situation. I was also told that the surgery is very risky but what is more risky is that your arm will never be the same as before the fracture with that plate inside. You will feel constant irritation and sometimes pain (especially when it's cold), your arm will never be as strong as before and your active life will be very limited. And you're just 18, your bones are still growing and the plate fixed to one side of the bone can lead to its deformation. Anyways, in a year after surgery you have to make your decision. Just find a good surgeon and everything will be fine.

The muscle grew back and is as strong as before already, the range of movement: full rotation, full flexion but I have only -4 degrees of extension but I used to have about -10. I do so many exercises every day but I can't achieve the same extension, I have the feeling as if the metal plate just doesn't allow the bone to extend completely, even though I know that starting from 0 degrees is the norm already. I will have the plate removed in 2 months. How do you think is it possible to get those final degrees after surgery? What are the risks?

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 2 lety

      Not sure, the problem is most likely in the way your bone has healed itself. Without an X-ray it's hard to say. Anyway, when you get rid of that plate, you'll feel a very big difference. Everything will be just like before the fracture. The main risk is that after the plate was removed, there will be many wholes in your bone and you have to be very careful for a couple of month.

    • @ElectronicsComputers
      @ElectronicsComputers  Před 5 lety

      I'm not a doctor so I can't give you advises I can only speak from my personal experience and if you decided to remove the plate then do it. Because in my case it was 21 month and surgeons had serious problems with 2 screws. To remove one screw they made 3 extra holes in my bone. About paine during workout it mostly was in my tricep area where were screws and for some exercises near bicep because under my bicep were sharp ends of screws, actually two of them. (two long screws that penetrate the bone from another side). Near my elbow I felt only burning and popping noise. Bro before my second surgery I've made a huge research and you can do the same. There are thousands like us and everyone has the same symptoms until they get rid of the hardware. Ask your surgeon about risk of radial nerve damage because if your fracture was somewhere in the middle then it's risky. In my case it was in lower third close to elbow so it's below the nerve. And of course x-ray if it's good then you're good to go. Anyway good luck and I'd love to hear from you about your successful experience!
