Excellent information Thanks. I had the hardware removed from a broken humerus just under the shoulder. It was a plate and 7 screws. I'm now WORSE than after the first surgery. The Dr. told me it would be 'arthroscopic of may include a mini open repair, but he completely opened up the full incision and removed All the tissue including some muscle. The right shoulder being connected to the left hip area via the fascia is causing muscles not to fire right and I0 months later I'm still having problems with muscle spasms and walking, standing and sitting.
I would have left the hardware in, but he said it had to come out. It was causing some discomfort. He told me I'd be able to sleep on it if I had it out, but I can't sleep on it. It hurts my shoulder and all the way down into my right hand.

  • @designstinamarshmallow9868

I'm getting screws removed on Thursday, after a being on a 7 month waiting list. I had the initial injury, a trimalliolar ankle fracture, 2 years ago, and I have had pain ever since. At first the pain was horrific. About 8 months after, it wasn't as bad, but after those 8 months, it started getting worse again. I had an xray, and they could see that the longest screw, that was attached to the fibula bone plate, had started to crush my tibia and spin around, so you could see crumbs of the tibia on the xray. Also, the 2 screws on the inside of my ankle will also be removed since they are scraping away at some other bone, causing alot of pain. So we'll see if I'm in that 50% that will get an improvement. I really hope so, I haven't been able to be active at all these past 2 years. Wish me luck! :)🍀

@@designstinamarshmallow9868 what a pity. Hope it gets better for you. In September 23 i had an accident in Bali Indonesia. I had surgery there, because i triple broke my left ankle. I got 14 screws and a plate build into my ankle. I feel the material permanently and i want to get it removed. I can see and feel the screws through my skin. When i lay down my leg on hard surfaces, like on the floor, it hurts. My german physiotherapist thinks it could be to much material in my ankle.

I had a wrist fracture 5 weeks ago and now I have plate and screws in it. It's still too early to decide whether they should be removed or not but in my case, tendons are constantly being rubbed by them which is causing discomfort, of course. But, alongside getting physiotherapy, I have to move my hand all the time in order to reduce its stiffness. Hopefully things will get better with time. The operation took place one month ago and its main advantage was that I could get back to work very soon after that. My wrist was stiff, of course, but the limited mobility I desperately needed to do my work was OK. My physiotherapist constantly encourages me to use it, of course, and steering my bike today with my (once-)broken wrist also let it make some improvement.

    1. How do we know wheather our hardware fixed or not?
    2. In future is there any chance of screw loose ? If that what we have to do ?
    3. How much life span for screws?
    4. Can we able to do excercises like planks and hard excercise after hardware in ?

You cannot generalize about screw and hardware removal, except to say that if there is no immediate problem, don't touch it. Some scoliosis patients have over 20 large screws in their spine and they stay there for the rest of their lives, without much problems. Other people have a broken collar bone and because there is not much fat in that area, the screw and plate may be apparent. I've got all kinds of metal in the body from fusions and do not plan to have it removed. One thing you have to be sure is that the hardware is actually the problem. If you don't understand the surgery, physiology and neurology well, you may wrongly assume it is.

And they will go to another surgeon just for that, who will do it because they get paid for it.

I have hardware both sides of my ankle and at the back of the ankle (I did a wonderfuljob breakingthis one).I also teared all the tendons in my right foot at the same time I broke the other ankle.

But I usually find even if I take painkillers and anti inflammatory medicine, it does not help.
I am a pre school teacher and am constantly on my feet and even when at home I am always busy.

It often feels as if the pain is in my bone if that makes since? I also am having some crunching feeling at the top of ankle where the band is and the tendons run underneath. The dr said that was not normal and ordered a CT ( waiting on insurance to clear) .The Dr told me to continue taking my antibiotics and wait 7-10 days and go from. there. I kinda felt like he thought I was exaggerating about the pain and I felt I didn't receive the answer I was looking for. How does the surgeon know for sure its the hardware causing the pain or my body rejecting the metal? Should I go ahead and have the harware removed?

V Grimard , 2.5 months ago was walking my horse on a shoulder of 2 lane road, huge trucks came by way to fast in both directions at same time and very suddenly. Horse got behind me, deep footing, didn’t see what she was doing, everything happened so fast, my left leg was involved, Tibia/Fibula. I so appreciate your story. I am in AZ, have 4 screws, just started to walk this week, very slowly.
It’s such a long process. I was told it would be a year. I keep wondering about the screws, and feel the tendons issue on the inner side of knee. I was told this week by Surgeon to be patient.
      How are you doing now?

FUSIONS SHOULD BE AVOIDED (see my other post about artificial disc below): I have two lumbar broken screws after 14 years - they say it happened a long time ago - good luck in removal as it sheared off near the bone and the tool to extract it does not always get a good enough grip. I have stiffness and have to use lidoderm patches nightly for the past decade. Thanks for nothing Doc.

I had the 3 long screws in my femur removed after a hip fracture. The doc said don't do any jumping off things and impact exercise. There were 3 holes in the bone where the screws were; best thing is to eat a lot of protein, Vitamin C, D. Dark leafy greens, milk, calcium loaded foods. I was glad to get those things out; they were causing a lot of pain. It takes about 6-8 weeks to fill in those holes. Then you are good to go!

    Hi ma'am,
My name is Melvin. Im 22 years old. I broke my right tibia, fibula and the ankle in a motorcycle accident exactly one year ago. Fibula got broken completely and got saperated. Tibia was also having a major fracture. I got my surgery and now there's a rod and 3 screws inside my leg. Doctor told my bones are completely healed and the rod and the screws can be removed after three more months. I started walking after one month of the surgery and gradually i started riding motorcycles and later on i started doing workouts too. But sometimes i get pain at the area where the fracture was there and sometimes at the area where the screws are placed. I badly wanted to remove the hardwares from my leg because its not so comfortable having those things inside. I can feel the screws by touching. But last day one of my friends told his brother broke his hand and he also had to have a surgery to fix it with rod and screws. And after one year he removed but later he just fell somewhere and he broke the same hand again. Now again he got the surgery and its fixed with hardwares. After hearing this I'm totally confused. Its my leg. Now i have the support of the hardware while walking. But if i remove it, theres no support for my broken bones. And obviously chances of injuring the leg is really high. Please help me out with this. God bless you.

The hardware won't prevent another fracture. The metal is there for temporarily support. By itself, the metal fatigue will cause it break shortly. Removing hardware will not cause the bone to have less strength.

I had bimalleolar surgery only 11 days ago. It went well overall. Excruciating pain the first 36 hours or so but I was expecting that. I am doing cold therapy and I find that after a certain point it might be that the hardware is getting cold and it starts hurting. This is all new so it's hard to say.
I live in the northeast and am hoping the hardware won't be an issue when it gets cold. I have asked several people who have said cold isn't an issue for them. It's good to know, though, that removal is an option down the road.
Nerve block sounds horrible again (for removal), haha. But I guess I can put up with it if I have to.

I personally think the plate broke when the original Dr. screwed the plate into my arm for the initial surgery but based on my SEVERE pain levels after that surgery and other issues like my arm being curved after my cast was initially removed. There's no way I could have broke the plate while my cast was on so I believe it was broken during insert.
