Someone else wrote this, but Bridges aren't designed to survive a hit by a cargo ship. That's too much weight that is moving with too much inertia. This is why, when a boat is going into a harbor, the Harbor Master takes over the ship. And then it becomes their responsibility how about to get it past the bridge safely.
That ship is 95K to 116K tons. You can't expect to build a bridge support to stop 100K ton ship indeed.
Its amazing how many people not involved in building bridges, are out here putting down facts about such like they know something based on their intial assumption.
Yes, there is that, but the bridge completely crumbled instead of having just one section fail. It needed to be appropriately updated.
20years ago, San Francisco Bay bridge was hit by a big ship. Ship was damaged and a lot of diesel spilled out. Bridge had no problem.
@@llw2606 Not the same ship
As a coast guard veteran they have realistically around 30 mins to 60 mins with just regular cloths on
Wouldn’t that amount of weight of debris collapsing have the same effect of a trench pulling everything to the bottom? I’m assuming with a ship that size the harbor isn’t shallow.
that is sad. I hope they find the lost people for family members at least. RIP to all of the lives lost 😭💔
Not as bad as one might think but the cold water will end up being the real killer. You time to rescue will be measured in minutes@@zeroturn7091

Umm most bridges will completely collapse if the main support is rammed by a cargo ship.
Even if the support remained intact the weight of traffic poses another point of failure after the impact.
Most bridges have pylon protections. Bumpers basically
@@adriencloud2130 do you realize how heavy that cargo ship is?

When did the mayday distress call go out? A recording should be available. Who was the Baltimore/Chesapeake Bay pilot? It looks very likely some serious mistakes were made

I get bridges aren't made to withstand a boat driving into them, but this bridge went down like the finish line ribbon on a race...
How many tons do you suppose all of that concrete and steel is on a bridge?
If you look at the design, you'll notice that from each pyon, there were beams going at near 45 degree angles to help support some of the weight. But essentially, the bridge, if it was not connected to the other spans, is a teeter totter. If you take away one side of the connection, it will drop one way or the other.
Which is exactly how it collapsed.
So terrible! Brings back memories of the 35W Minneapolis bridge collapse.

watch?v=qZbUXewlQDk - What's Going On With Shipping? explains it.
It was a mechanical failure & they tried to slow & divert the ship but were unable to.
As we can clearly see from the video MV Dali lost power at 01:24:32 EST. Watch all the lights go out. The engine probably stopped and she may have also lost steering control.
MV Dali was sailing perfectly up the exit channel at 8.5 knots up until that happened. After losing power she drifted right and started to slow - another solid indicator she lost power. 116,000 tons drifting out of control at over 8 knots. The GPS track clearly shows all of this.
Power was regained (lights come back on) at 01:25:31 and the stack starts billowing smoke at 01:25:43. I suspect they got the engine back on line and threw it into reverse at full throttle. The GPS track shows the ship out of its lane and slowing further but none of this is going to help with steering control. Reversing causes the ship to shimmy, cavitation from the single prop and the loss of speed reduce rudder effectiveness - and these things don't exactly turn on a dime. The ship drops the port anchor to try and slow down further but its too late. She hit the bridge at about 1.5 knots but 116,000 tons at 1.5 knots is a LOT of energy.
The truth will set u free.
