I watch a lot of prop videos where something looks okay in the thumbnail, but when you watch the vid it looks pretty bad. THIS is OUTSTANDING!!! I am 100% glad I clicked on this vid. You did a fantastic job and should be very proud of your work!
Spectacular! Don't be afraid to modify your build, this is Sci-Fi not a museum piece. Now go lift the hood of your car, notice that some things are new and shiny like an oil filter because they get replaced every 3000 miles, other things get extra rusty because road salt splashes up there repeatedly. The FX guys over weather SW props for dramatic effect. If you want the six inch effects, then leave some parts new looking. Also consider that some oxidation will be white and green due to the base metal being aluminum or copper respectively.
I quite loved your point of view
Nice job
I've been a prop builder for over a decade and your videos always teach me some new technique to use. Awesome work! Keep making these videos!
Utterly astounding craftmanship!!!! It's at times like these you realise the 'like' button just isn't enough!
So much talent and hard work. Amazing. I actually prefer the after result of the baking soda reacting to the paint.
If you would not have your 6 inch rule, I would not watch your making with these high interest. You are definitely one of the best creature builders here on you tube. You are a very skilled artist!
These projects are just next level man! Fantastic jobs on these. I wish I had this kind of patience! This woman is low key building a robot army to take over Canada lol!
Printing that whole thing in 10 days was definitely an achievement. I've just spent the last 4 days printing a single Westar35 on my P1P. I definitely need to learn to airbrush though, your finish with that is awesome, especially the weathering. Going to have to look back through your videos as I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more of the droids that you've done as I've got an R5 sitting in my office that has been about 60% complete for the last 2 years, so this might give me the push I need to finish it!
This is what youtube is meant for, amazing creators like you! you're work is just amazing
Wow, just outstanding. I think thats the best IG-12 I've seen for sure. So so cool.
And your recommendation for getting a Foot Sander for prints is saving so much time prepping too.
Thank you Michaela, you always make my files look amazing :)
That is insanely good 😱
The metal is totally convicing, and the piston parts of hydraulics look totally real
Wowsers
Well done on the build- it's amazing 👏
Great build!
Thank you!
This is one of the most amazing prop paint jobs I’ve ever seen. Your skills are amazing!!! I learned so much and can’t wait to try out some of them. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! And I’m so happy to hear that! I always want to try to be adding to the knowledge pool about various techniques and experiments of mine that have been successful to help others.
This is just great work and outstanding outcome!
My mantra has always been “weathering tells the story”- and I’ve tried, well thought I’ve tried pretty much every style, techniques, methods, materials out there - crisscross combining all the above, while doing some heavy glancing at the weathering techniques used in the scale model community.. I just learned a few things watching this amazing build..
I watched this and had to come back - infreakingcredible ❤
And to think I was impressed by my self designed soap holder😞 That was a lesson in patience and dedication for sure.
Outstanding Job! You have incredible painting and weathering talent.
Wow! glad you popped up on my YT algorithm, absolutely outstanding build!
this is really cool. i remember reading a book when i was a kid where an ig droid hacked the death star just before the rebels blew it up lol.
A fellow Canadian! Love it! Great work!
Really makes me want to go back and remake my IG-11 since I have better and more well tuned printers now. And your little sander has been a lifesaver for me!
Yay! Glad to hear the sander has worked out for you.
I get it. I have a couple of projects that I went ahead and printed all of the pieces for and now I wish I hadn’t so that they could’ve been printed in a higher resolution/different filament to save me sanding time 😂
Utterly amazing and inspiring, then pulls the "here's one I made earlier" absolutely stunning Grogu. Can we get a whole video on him too?
The end part was beautiful, having the most loved child on the galaxy inside after all those months of hard work was the cherry on the cake’s top. He deserves his own video about all the process making him alive
I really liked this video. The process and detail were amazing. I especially liked the way you explained each step.
I keep coming back to your video as a fantastic source of tips and tricks and man its just so amazing you ahve such great skills.
Awesome work!!!!! I love this Video! Very Helpful for all other Builders out there! Best Regards from Germany...
Suscribed , your work is insane. I love it. You have a feeling for the paints and how to make it as real as posible that is incredible. Thanks for making videos like these.
I wish I was your neighbor. I admire your efforts, what a great piece. Greetings from the Netherlands.
I’m pretty sure my actual neighbours think I’m insane so that would be a welcome change 😂
Wow such a great video. You deserve so many more views on your channel. You’re one of the best prop building channels out there.
Thank you! :)
Your work is simply amazing!

Wow you nailed it. Fantastic paint job!
Going to keep returning to your videos when I make Metal props! Great Job!
Wow an absolutely amazing job! Really. All your hard work was worth it.
Wow! This is amazing! Great commitment and execution! Bravo!!
the painting is top notch, and attention to detail in everything, and crazy sanding must be taken a long of time, this is just super amazing! thank you for the video!

Such an amazing build and pleasure to watch it evolve throughout all the steps.

So good!! Amazing job! 🎉 This is the way!
Incredible! So impressive 👍
Thats incredible! Great job, so awesome
Came to watch the result, and learnt a BUNCH in the process. Incredible
Fantastic job. You have perfected the metallics and rust effects which is not an easy task. Well done. Keep the 6 inch rule. It does matter and makes you a much better prop maker.
Thank you! Haha, there’s no threat of me changing my ways, my brain would never allow it
Absolutely superb work! There is no cooler hobby
That may be one of the best builds I have ever seen. Absolutely incredible!!!

Unbelievable
You are very talented!
This was incredible to watch. I'm a neophyte 3d printer and this is so inspiring.
WOW, That is amazing!!!
Thank you for pointing out your tools you use for your 3d prints. I would never have thought about the foot scraper.
Your art is incredible.

Omg this is wicked!!!
Wicked incredible job !
That’s a awesome build!
As someone who's been working on an R5-D4 since before it was cool (my build started before Arfive became a main character on The Mandalorian) I'm just amazed you got all that done in only nine months! I'm at three years and far from finished; granted that there's probably a year's worth of "oops, out of money again" type delays in my build.
Using masking tape to apply the wet masking is a great idea, I'll have to lift that.
I'm active on the Astromech forums and there's more and more fully 3D printed droids over there, too, which leads to much debate about the best material to use for the task. I firmly believe that - if one's printer can handle it - ABS is by far superior for propbuilding. Not because of the temperature resistance, but because ABS is *softer*. In my opinion, sanding a part printed in ABS is about half as much work as sanding that same part made from PLA, which is actually a very hard plastic. (The ability to solvent-weld with relatively mild acetone is a nice benefit, too, but I've recently learnt that even PLA can be solvent-welded, so that's a less significant consideration.) To be sure not every printer can handle ABS - I suspect the ones you showed in the video would struggle with it - but if your printer *can* I think it's worth it.
Smaller layer heights make sanding easier, too; yes, the prints take longer but I, at least, more than get that time back in reduced finishing time.
But let me conclude by saying the final result here is amazing! There's enough 3D printed parts on my droid - including the dome - to have a good sense of just how much work doing all that took. Even with the powered foot sander, that's a massive amount of energy and the finished droid is perfect. Plus the whole off-hand "oh, yeah, I made a Grogu too." I hope it makes you happy every time you walk past it!
Yes, definitely. ABS is what I primarily use for projects like this now to save myself as much time as possible with the post processing. PETG was a good middle ground to start with for me. Easier to sand than PLA and it has the benefit of being able to print on any non enclosed printer. Nothing compares to the ease of ABS sanding though.
Best of luck with your R5! Astromechs are incredibly complex projects that I don’t think a lot of people fully appreciate the work that goes into them. I’m hoping to finally get a start on my long dreamed about Chopper build soon.
@@MMsPropShop I like PETG for anything that needs to interface with metal bits - it';s slightly flexible so that gives it more resilience when dealing with screws. PLA is great for anything that doesn't need to be sanded; it's also super strong so anything that might need to be thumped and whacked works well in PLA. Which is, of course, why PLA sucks so much to sand; I'm sure you know this but I like to be thorough.
Speaking of, I do hope that my comment didn't sound too know-it-all-ish. That was certainly not a goal.
Arfive is coming along! He achieved full mobility and dome rotation about two weeks ago, and is about 90% done on the visual/aesthetic side - with most of what's not done being on hold until spring. -5 is pretty warm for Edmonton in December but it's still nearly 20 degrees too cold to spray paint!
Once it warms up all I'll have to do is get some sound in him, and do a bit of coding for lights. And then I think I will call that a "finished" droid. Everything else, like adding a camera or a "welding" arm or of course a bad motivator will count as an "upgrade." :D
😮😮😮 WOW absolutely speechless this was really cool
