Amazing interview. I think a common currency will be beneficial for regional trade. We currently trade at 16% a common currency will likely send that to 50% plus. The drawbacks are the currency will have a lower currency value than the Kenyan shilling hence disrupting importers. Exporters will benefit as our goods will be competitive internationally.
While a common currency will be a plus, I don't think it will solely move intra-regional trade to 50% (which is what intra-Asia is at). A lot more work would be required to boost trade

Remove the geographical connotation of the name forthwith. Call it Umoja Community, Jumuiya or something. I prefer Umoja because Jumuiya sounds Arabic. DRC is not smack dab in Eastern Africa. They extend all the way to the western coastline of the continent. Have a Kiswahili name, to encourage its use as the lingua franca of the community.

What prevents EAC from becoming one sovereign country, taking current countries as states, one currency and president. Each to have state ministers and state by-laws. If there is United States of America, is it not possible to become one country for your own self preservation, consolidate your power and economy. If they play up-down, their goods pricing up-down = same. If they play left-right, china-india, india-china = same. Up down left right is dual currency accounts of normal retail and commercial banking. You can do the same too. Fully backed by goods and trade.

One of the reasons preventing full EA integration is the actions of Charles Njonjo in 1977. Njonjo then engineered the breakup of EAC based on the argument that the other EA countries are behind in development and that they will drag Kenya behind. As a result EAC broke up. So when u saying now that we want the EAC up, people go back to see what happened to the original EAC. And when they know what transpired, they will drag their feet.
You still need to be educated about what we are seeking to do and why. You might be surprised to discover that you will be one of the main beneficiaries.
Actually Kenya will be the biggest beneficiary. Technically speaking Nairobi will be the CBD, all roads and railways will lead there. Both JKIA and Addis Ababa will be biggest international flight hubs, that's bigger business in a year than Kenya will ever make in a decade alone. MOMBASA Will become the regions ship hub. Basically Kenya becomes to EA what Newyork is to USA. Think about that for a moment. If anything, Kenyans should be pushing for EAF more than any other country.

There should be a carefully drafted educational programme, explaining the rationale for the EAC and taught in all schools of East Africa. It's very disappointing to see how school teachers in East Africa are totally ignorant of the EAC imperatives. I remember overhearing a Kenyatta University graduate teacher, teaching a High School class in Kangema, Muranga, a number of years ago, that the only reason why the EAC was established was to assist the land-locked Uganda. According to her, there was no benefit for Kenya in the EAC initiative. Naturally, school kids believe so much in their teachers. Can you imagine that her former students, who now might be leaders and parents in society, may be out there spreading the same trash! You pick the same problem even from the line of questioning on this program by Ndhu about "competition", seemingly completely oblivious to the true meaning of the word "competition" in the discipline of Economics. Competition is good for the customer and must thus be encouraged. And the bigger the market, and the freer the movement of goods, services, labour and people therein, the greater the competition thereof and the better for the customer. The producers and service providers too are far better off with access to a larger market without unnecessary barriers.
