If you're pulling your gear in and out of the foam several times a day, every day, the foam will fall apart fairly quickly. The Plasti dip is really useful then. But for long-term storage, it's totally unnecessary. However, what IS necessary is desiccant! Throw some of those tasty little snack packs in that box!
Good idea
Tip: For cutting solid core foam easily, freeze the foam first then cut as you like. It will not be so floppy on you.
I hate it when it's floppy! Thanks for the tip.
I like the idea of one layer of pluck & pull foam and one layer that's not. I would have ordered mine the same way as you did. 73!
Thanks! I like it too
"pluckins"? ROFL! I can attest it is a great case. The radio loves the weather in Alabama, much more than Wisconsin. Great lead on other cases.
You must carry this torch forward!
Great video. One recommendation. Pick up one of those two blade reciprocating electric kitchen knives at a thrift shop - great for cutting foam.
Great idea, I think my wife has one of those too!
Love case builds like this. Stay Awesome. :)
You too my friend!
I like how you made that great fit TO. 👏
Thanks Kevin!
I have similar cases for my radios. Have then for my Yaesu 817, 897 and Icom IC-718 which fits perfectly inside. Most are made by Max in Italy. Reason for this is that they have padlock holes so airport security have to be present when they get opened. You can be a pain to them by placing the keys inside and lockpick them open to get the keys to unlock the case. It makes them wait for a while hihi
But the Max brand are good for me as I also use them for my large astronomical binoculars and that itself is bigger and better for my needs. So they might be more priced than normal but they are robust enough to keep my radios in transit.
Thanks for the lead!
Nanuk passes the lick test. Best overall flavor.
Nanuk are great cases. I have one for my FT-891.
You made your 'case'. Some of these cases are tapered top to bottom on the inside. I suppose to thicken up the corners for drop protection. Always measure the interior dimensions at the top and bottom to make sure your stuff will fit.
Good tip! Thanks!
Love my surplus case I use for my g90, laptop and wolfriver coil antenna. Another great video Steve.
Thanks Steve!
I love using Harbor Freight cases for storing and transporting my ham gear. While maybe not as good as Pelican cases, they are much less expensive and go just as good a job ... unless I need to send my radio to the moon.
HF Cases are great! There are lots of options out there now!
My general rule of thumb is Harbor Freight for light duty (storage or day transport like POTA) and Pelican for heavy duty (shipping or my Solar generator builds). I need to research the one you show!
This one survived shipment to @FEPLabs Radio in Alabama. Jim is the proud new owner and is starting to make vids on this radio too!
All the radios, all the time.
Happy New Year Dave! Hope all is well in Daveland!
Another awesome vid! Now ur inspiring me to ca$e-up my surplus rigs! A good thing, thanks! 73, Mike
No Problem Mike! Take a look at the contact cement and plasti-dip methods and see if they are for you. (They weren't for me) Good Luck! I'd personally also favor uniform size... or maybe 2 sizes for easy shelving.
I got some cases on Amazon and they printed my logo on the tag.
Awesome!
Awesome
Thanks!
Size matters.
It.Always.Does.
Just in case.... sorry, just had to 🤦♂️. 73
Solid!
