Features I like about this Radio:
Presets..lots of presets.
Speaker audio is good.
FM and AM reception is decent.
Simple to use.
Compact size.
Takes 2-AA batteries.
Has a back lit LCD Display.
External antenna jack.
Antenna whip extension included.
Overall opinion, if your looking to buy this radio, take a good look at the PL-380 and 310-ET models. They offer the numeric keypad to make life a bit easier for just a few bucks more. Buy this if size is an important issue for you.

Just bought it. A great beginners radio (for me) that wants to dabble in SW. Only runs on 2 AA, and comes with external antenna. SOLD!
Yes, I found many distant stations during this shortwave scan: czcams.com/video/YnBpPqdh_ak/video.html
A nice basic honest little radio, and does not let the Tecsun brand down, great review Sir 👍 Tam.
Thank you. Its built like the R-9012, probably why I love the size and design.
Just used your amazon link and made my purchase! Thanks for your review and band scans.
Thank you Don, you are going to enjoy a sweetheart of a radio and help out the channel at the same time. Awesome!
I’m rather partial towards the PL-390.
It is interesting how there are so many differences between them and so many similarities.- and always the high quality.
This little PL-606 looks very nice.
Also the SW is great! I'm into Sw radio more than MW.
Pictures of the inside if anyone is interested. www.patreon.com/posts/18049857
As I do to tune AM and FM?
I'm not getting it.
The button layout and functions look very much like on the PL-360. Cool radio but I find I typically reach for one with a keypad most of the time for direct entry rather than scan/browse sessions.
Love your review. While you were parked on FM 98.1 (rock) how did you make it switch to the other formats of music? Was that HD radio?
Using a C.Crane FM transmitter hooked up to a MP3 player broadcasting at the frequency. I was changing tracks on the player like a DJ does on a radio station ;)
I have the PL-606 and the PL-310ET. I like the 606 on MW reception, it is quite sensitive and with great selectivity. I think that the 310ET is more noisy than the 606 on MW.
what about SW reception do you think pl-606 better than pl310et or the same ? i have pl-310et and i like how pl606 is smaller and cuter and only two battries
among these two, which is the best on fm?
Nice modern radio. Thanks!
Hi, thanks for a thorough review! I just bought one. Now I would like preset channel and volume for the alarm. However, only the channel is preset. The volume always starts in the yelling level 10. The manual tells to push memory+alarm buttons, which I do. Anyone with some tips? Thanks!
Thanks for the review. I am going for the 606, the 310et is $48, 380 is $45 and this is $39 right now; 606 smaller and I don't need that many keys. Thanks.
Not a bad radio, mine eats batteries like crazy for some reason...so just in case invest in some rechargeables. I was telling my friend this and he thinks something is wrong with mine.
todderbert My 606 also eats batteries like crazy. Seems to be a common problem, I think it’s inherent to the radio.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that AM reception on Tecsun PL606 is better than CCrane Skywave. Before throwing rocks and stick at me, look at the ferrite bar antenna picture of PL606 and let me know. Without a doubt CCrane makes well thought out quality radios, but at a premium price.
It has been my experience that the CC Skywave is slightly better.
@@todderbert Often times I experience similar sensations when I drop so much more money on a product such as "craft beer", but sometimes I wonder how much of it is due to placebo effect clouding my judgment. Nah, I'm sure despite using the same chip, smaller ferrite bar, and smaller speaker CCrane has a secret "sauce" that makes it better. At more than double the cost it better, but we're prbably splitting radio waves here ;-)
Good review- I would consider this a first radio for a child that might be interested in the hobby. I would recommend to take the money spent on all of these and invest in a Tecsun 660 with many bells and whistles , tuning options, air band and SSB or for a little more the 880 without the air band and more tuning options. Glad you reviewed all of them so people can see the advantages and limitations . The antenna extender was interesting and could be the subject of a show.
Thank you, the antenna extender may be featured in an upcoming Tuner Tips video. I appreciate that idea! As far as the 660 and 880. There may be one coming to Todderbert's workshop soon :)
Toddler ghost Adventures?? Lol!! A lil mini Zak, Aaron, Billy and Jay lmfao!! Now that would be interesting af!!🤣🖤
How is the SW reception compared the the 310ET?
Identical.
@@todderbert thanks!
Nice review. I don't have the 606 but I think I would rather have a 310 or 380. Not a big enough price difference from the 606 and 310. That antenna extender is kind of cool.
My 310 pulls AM stations in better then the both of them, but I enjoy using the 380 because of it's controls. They feel premium. The antenna extender is a great idea and works very well. But when attached to this radio it becomes a bit to top heavy to keep it on its little stand :)
agree with you, PL-380 is best of the bunch.
This reminds me a lot of a modernized Grundig G8.
I like antenna jack. Nice looking little radio to leave in my day pack all the time. So who makes that 606, Tecsun, Kiato or what ?
I opened it up and saw an unbranded PCB. But my guess is its made by Tecsun. Pictures on pinned post.
Hi Todderbert. How is Tecsun PL-606 compared to Tecsun PL-398BT on FM?
the BT would be a better choice for FM.
@@todderbert thank you for the answer.
I have a small question for you, if you have the kindness to answer me:
I am looking for the smallest LW MW FM SW radio to have a built in clock and wake up alarm and sleep functions in order to take with me in my trips.
For now I have the PL 360 whitch is a great radio but the external AM antenna makes it fragile. I also find not pleasing the fact that on PL 360 the tuning is not linear, is it in steps, every step I have to wait for the sound, I cannot surf on SW smoothly, like on PL 660 for instance.
Can you tell me, with your experience whitch of all the radios you know that would be?
Thanks!
I cant think of a small radio that would do all that you want. That smooth tuning is absent on most new DSP radios.
Tecsun DR-920C!
Oh wait it doesn’t do longwave lol
Enjoy Your reviews. Would You know if the Ritmix RPR-7020 is a Rebranded Tecsun pl-606? If it is , would be over $10 less . Again enjoy You reviews very informative .
Sure looks like it.
Man! I just got my pl 380 and now you're showing me this? how could you.... Don't get me wrong, PL 380 is very good. But I'd rather have a bit compact and with 2 AA's than 3s.
Hola, cómo configuro el display para cambiar de grados Farenheit a Centígrados? les agradezco la respuesta
When you choose 9kHz it will show Centigrade, and when you set it to 10kHz it will show Fahrenheit.
Alright, I will let you know what I think (you asked for it on your video) Are you ready IRON MAN? Think of this gadget as a compact travel alarm clock with battery indicator that also has a decent radio with sleep timer that uses standard AA batteries. Tivdio 111 or whatever doesn't have a buzzer for alarm, so if you left the volume down on the radio you missed your flight. Surprisingly many travel alarm clocks don't have "low battery" warning, imagine battery runs out while you're sleeping, sweet dreams.. PL-380 is a much better radio, but needs 3xAA batteries that brings overall weight/dimensions higher. So, there you have it; my 2 cents :)
Does DSP stand for digital signal processor?
Yes it does.
I bought one after watching your and Two Hands's video's. I liked the formfactor, performance, ETS is great, but I wouldn't really recommend it personally. It just felt cheaply made, buttons weren't that responsive, the tuning wheel switched between slow mode and fast mode too often, making it very awkward to manually tune unless you tune veeery slowly (and after every click there's a second of silence). It also had some quirks like volume 3 is too soft for night time listening, but 4 is too loud with earbuds in. It's much better with headphones. The volume was also noticably louder when the automatic backlight turned on and it went down when the backlight turned off. The charging didn't work too great either, it stopped before the batteries were full. It seemed like it had some electrical issues and it just seemed very poorly designed. Maybe I just had a flawed unit...
Performance for the buck was quite impressive though, so if you know what you're getting you might really enjoy it. But it made me switch to something very simple and analog.
I agree about the tunning wheel issue on slow and fast mode. Same here.
I would suggest that you *not* buy this radio. The reception itself is fine but the build quality is poor. Within a year, the tuning wheel gets damaged and stations jump multiple times when tuning. The buttons also became unresponsive. Tecsun is aware of these problems and released a new model(PL-505) which has the same functions and added 4kHz bandwidth control for MW. So, in 2018, the PL-505 is a better buy than PL-606.
I like to buy Tecsun PL 360. I also found tecsun PL 365. Now I am confused which one is better. Do you know the difference between these two.
I found a tecsun pl 398bt on ebay
Stereo, awesome! with Bluetooth.
The 505 is a better receiver, however it's more cheaply built.
This or radiwow r108?

Does this have a display light ?
yes
Where is the Long Wave?
I don't receive LW by me, so it is hard to show case it.
Where are you? Long Wave has beacons on it & you can pick up some foreign stations also.
Near Chicago IL, and I have not heard a beacon yet. I search once in awhile looking for one.
Piece for this radio😭😲😢
I guess Tecsun’s marketing strategy is to have a radio in every size and at every price point or they know there are radio nuts who will buy one of everything so they pop out as many minor variations as they can. Who really knows? For me to buy a SW radio though, it generally has to have full SW up to 30MHz, a numeric pad and SSB or something unique or interesting that makes it a curiosity. This one is too generic for me. :(
That's cool, though I don't think I've found any stations past 21MHz on the shortwave. Must be my indoor use and my pastime of usually listening to SW at night. This little 606 is surprising me with its MW performance. I'm not usually a daytime AM listener but with how easy this radio works with ETM, I let it rip and was happy with the results.
