- I loved both my NES and Sega Genesis and it was fun to find they made the same game on both so I could compare how they made one along with the other to see which I might have liked better. Here's a look at just about every NES game that was also on Sega Genesis.

A little while back I also looked at NES games that were also on Atari 2600. czcams.com/video/5nYZHzgerRU/video.html
I still love the nes some games the genesis had games with better color like they add more games
Propper = Football is football and soccer is soccer.
Get videos man it's like taking me back to my childhood looking at these great games we grew up on playing out brains out daily
Battletoads is a great example as it was actually made easier than the NES version.
Yes the Sega version is the better of the two
Too bad it’s missing cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game comparing to the nes
That's cool. It was a damn good game, just too difficult and too many cheap deaths. Like don't even try to play with two players, lol
@@matthewnikitas8905 No, the NES game is much tighter than the Genesis one. This is coming from someone who grew up with the Genesis version.
Some of us like hard games
I gotta say, with all the games by RARE that you nailed here, I was surprised that Snake Rattle 'n' Roll wasn't in here. The Sega version was probably not well known but plays very nicely.
I had no idea that RC Pro AM had a Genesis version. It's one of my all time faves. I used to pop it in and veg out for days at a time. Classic.
One of my favourite games of all time
I bought RC for Genesis just because the NES version looked so fun. Just never played it and was a big Super Sprint fan in arcade
I’m actually surprised that RC Pro Am isn’t ranked among the essential NES classics. Such a great game
Ditto - I thought RARE was exclusively a Nintendo studio.
Tengen titles make sense, though, after the court decision.
Did you ever beat the game?
Your absolutely right about Arch Rivals being a precursor to the NBA Jam series of games. It probably could be called NBA Jam 0.5 as both games are actually made by Midway and you can definitely see the similarities between them. Great video by the way, I really enjoy your work!
Yeah, I noticed the voice sample was straight up used by NBA Jam. Clearly NBAJ was far more polished, but the seeds were there.
The Genesis versions of Alien 3 and Battletoads & Double Dragon had such great soundtracks over their NES counterparts.
Arcade Double Dragon has the best soundtrack
Until you play the SNES version of Alien3 that was also 16bit and is leaps and bounds better than th 16bit Genesis in every way.
@@francischambless5919 same with Battletoads Double Dragon, the music is so much better in the SNES version + the graphic looks a lot better too
Great video idea.
The Immortal for Genesis has to be one of the most badass box covers of all time
Double Dribble and Micro Machines were on both NES and Genesis also. Love the videos! Happy new year!
Oh yeah, Micro Machines, and Fantastic Dizzy and Cosmic Spacehead were some other Codemasters classics that started on Nintendo but seemed to get the most fame on Megadrive... and no Atari ST ports for once!
(I just checked, and some other Codemasters-published Amiga games I couldn't find on Atari ST include Crash Landing, The Quest of Agravain, Soccer Pinball, Super Skidmarks, and Brian Lara Cricket '96.)
19:45 rampart is classic and fantastic
A friend clued me in on the Famicom version made by Konami, too. That has, like, a fun storyline and cute graphics. I should have included a quick shout-out to that version.
My best friend and I used to play Rampart for hours! I always got a kick at the end with dude in the guillotine and you can blink his eyes and scream 😂
Tecmo Super Bowl was quite different for the NES vs SNES/Genesis. The 16 bit versions had later rosters (as they came out in 1993 as opposed to 1991 for the NES version). The graphics, sound, "cut scenes" among several other features were different as well. While the gameplay engine was very much the same just with updated graphics, most fans enjoyed the NES version the most due to the roster we all knew and loved and just something about the tight gameplay and 'x factor' of the NES version.
To me the NES version feels more arcadey and chaotic, while the later versions attempted to be a slightly more realistic simulation of NFL football.
Both versions are fun for their own reasons but NES TSB is a unique game and is still played in tournaments, while the other versions became outdated with the release of more advanced football games. You also just can’t beat having players like Bo Jackson and QB Eagles
I’ve actually been able to beat the Battletoads genesis version without save states, still not an easy game but it’s less unforgiving. I’ve always like the improved visuals - great game on either console, been one of my favorites
Since John mentioned lemmings. It reminded me that Krusty's Super Funhouse was on both the Nes and Genesis. I prefer the genesis one. Very colorful puzzle solving game. With some platforming, I liked it for the time. Much easier early simpsons game to like than games like Bart vs the space mutants.
I may have to track down Genesis Roadblasters, that looks sharp.
That's a good one.
Gotta go with the Genesis version of Ms. Pac-Man, that other mode with all those new mazes really freshen up the experience. Pirates! Gold and Rampart too, my buddy and I used to play those to death on SEGA Channel.
I wish we could get more mazes for Pac-Man but whenever they ad mazes into things like Pac-Man world they aren't very good. At least Pac-Man adventures in time exists.
Hey, John. The omission that sticks out to me is MICRO MACHINES! Pretty sure it had a multitap *built into* the cartridge on Genesis!
Mega Drive MICRO MACHINES *x Turbo Tournament 96
John can only ignore Codemasters for so long!
John you forgot at least Megaman 1,2 & 3 VS Megaman Willy Wars, Snake Rattle & Roll in both Systems, Jordan Vs Bird One on One...
ooh, Jordan vs. Bird... yeah, I knew I'd leave off a few.
MegaMan: The Wily Wars was the first game that came to mind for me, considering it was included on the first Genesis Mini. I know it's a compilation of the first three NES MegaMan games with some new levels but they're still essentially the same games as on NES.
You're right about Battletoads for Genesis being handled by a different developer- the port was done by Arc System Works! This was probably because Rare was busy with so many different projects and also they pretty much specialized in NES games in the console space- as far as I can tell, they'd never developed a Genesis game themselves at this point.
The sound on Marble Madness for Genesis is absolute murder to the ears.
it sure was.
how could you overlook the all time great masterpiece that was ACTION 52
"Bandit Kings of Ancient Boredom?" I needed a good laugh--thank you!
I was extremely addicted to certain game genres back then and marble madness was one of them which I have played and beaten every version released I could get my hands on to completion. I milked everything I could get out of every game and certain games had such a lasting impression and appeal on my young mind that I still enjoy replaying those games from time to time reliving those moments again with those games to this very day.
My nostalgia with California Games is from the Commodore 64, even though I do have it for Genesis. Absolutely love this kind of video!
Stumbled upon this channel ,
Really dig it.
Subscribed!
Hey, John!
25:50 best moment of the video, couldn't help but laugh outloud, man! Ty for that, as well as another great video!
Cheers and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
There are also two player co-op and competitive modes in Ms. Pac Man for Genesis (and SNES). That makes it a must-own imo - and it's only $5.
When discussing the most difficult games Marble Madness doesn't get brought up nearly enough. Growing up it was one of the first games to make me swear at the television hah, other then Activision's Pitfall!
I freaking love your take on the classics thanks Mr Riggs!
I always compared SNES to Genesis but it's interesting how there's also NES/Genesis overlap.
Yeah, the TLDR there is if they are different games, then there's no consistent winner(even when the games have the same name like Aladdin) but when they are the same game, SNES usually wins simply because it had better graphics and better sound overall.
@@mattm7798 uaually yeah, Aladdin for example i prefer on the Genesis, though i also enjoy the other ports because they all offer something a little different, which is something i wish AAA gaming companies did more of.
Elementary school you never would've imagined being a ref in the precursor to NBA Jam, well done!
Great video.
One difference of the NES version of Battletoads and Double Dragons is that in level 3-3, in the vertical shaft with falling debris, there is a nice music effect used, 'Shepard tone', which makes an illusion of infinite decreasing of the tone, which fits perfectly a dangerous descending on a rope. Sadly there is no such effect in Genesis/SNES version.
I still always come back to Pirates! on NES ❤️❤️❤️
Pirates! Gold Edition for me, i sank so many hours into it on Genesis, still a hoot whenever i want to play a Pirate themed game, the only one as good if not better is Assassin's Creed : Black Flag. nothing against the Monkey Island games, mind you.
Happy New Year John Riggs. Hope you and yours had a good Christmas. Can't wait for all the content coming in 2023.
same to you and more of it!
Cool vid! I didn’t know about a lot of these cross-ports. A few others that made it to both systems that I haven’t seen anyone else mention yet: Ivan Stewart’s Super Off-Road, RBI Baseball 3, Smash TV, and Nobunaga’s Ambition (yet another KOEI game). The Miracle Piano Teaching System was also sold on both consoles, although I suppose that’s not really a “game.”
My man. Putting out content you just don't see in same same CZcamsville. Never had a clue that Pirates GOLD! was on the Genesis. But now, whenst I pay off the Xmas Amazon dent, I shall be rewarding myself with a purchase of that game. Thank you, Mr. John Riggs Here!
15:50 The Genesis/SNES version of Ms. Pac-Man is the BEST version of the game! It has several different level packs including the Strange levels that are really creative. You can even play as Ms & Mr Pac-Man on the screen at the same time and either work together or compete. It’s awesome
Pirates and Rampart on the Master System took up a lot of my time when younger- was great to see Rampart in your video.
Just discovered your channel and I'm not disappointed.
That Paperboy/podcast subscription joke was low-key funny as hell.
cool video with interesting insight, your content has improved a lot lately!
Talk about unlocking a memory. I rented 'Where In the World Is Carmen Sandiego?' for the SNES back when in 93 or 94. I had a bunch of encyclopedias with bookmarks all over them just laying around the living room for days until I beat the game 😂
I remember feeling so smart! I mean I was like 8 years old so it was a big deal to me haha. Good times.
Congrats on 200k, well deserved.
Awesome video John! I hope you have a happy and prosperous New Year 2023 bro!🎉
OMG! I never knew John Riggs was the referee in Arch Rivals!
This is my favorite of all your videos!😊
This isn’t me 3:33 😂 too funny! Great video
I never found the SNES and Genesis versions of Battletoads & DD: The Ultimate Team any fun, but once I played the NES version, suddenly it was fun! I don't quite get why, but the NES version cliqued with me in a way the 16-bit versions couldn't.
One of my favorite things about the Genesis version of Rampart is that when you play in 2-player mode, the loser is stuck in a guillotine and you press the button to behead him. Great times! The SNES version has some neat mode-7 and super scaling going on, but to me the Genesis version is the most fun, has the most '90s 'tude, and is the most arcade-accurate.
Clicked, not cliqued
Pretty cool! There's also stuff like MK3 which was on the ps1 , always loved how much of the spectrum that the genesis is Stretched too
A thing to not that the Japanese Mega Drive had different versions Klax and Marble Madness. The version of Klax that Japan got which was made by Namco just has a different graphical as gameplay remain the same but their version of Marble Madness being made in house by Tengen was more better than the western one by EA and even had support with the Sega Master System Track Ball and Mouse.
I'll have to check it out.
Great topic John...happy 2023 and remember kids Genesis still does after all these years !
John, next time you should do Genesis games on PS1! There are actually quite a few, plus it would be a good link in the chain, 2600 to NES to Genesis to PS1. Love the vids, happy new year!
Great list bro!
Great video. I forgot all about road blasters.
Marble Madness lives rent free in my head. I could never figure that game out.
i love the content Jon.
happy new years 🎉
I loved Lemmings on MS-DOS. My cousin and I grinded so many old PC games back in ze day and that one was addictive.
God bless you, Mr. Riggs. Finally got some Koei games in one of your videos ;) Bravo, good sir! Wait....Romance of the Yawn Kingdoms???? You take that back! You take that back right now!!! Bandit Kings of Ancient Boredom???? Them are fightin' words!!!! How dare you!! Well....at least they made it in your videos. Love ya man! Happy New Year!!!
Roadblasters is a NES game that was also on the Sega Genesis.
Happy new year Riggs
i just found your channel,i used to live in west richland in the tri cities in early 90s and fish the yakima river, its possable we seen each other
This brings back a lot of memories of envy for the Genesis as an NES kid.
Happy new year dude
Happy New Year John
I remember seeing Holosseum/Time Traveler at that Red Robin in Yakima. Looked amazing.
Your insight is incredible. Never dawned on me about Roadblasters being a pseudo sequel to Spyhunter. Played them both tons in the arcade. Spyhunter never felt right on the many platforms I played it on, from C-64 to PS2, cause of the arcade control stick being fantastic
Tecmo Bowl on the nes was my favorite game growing up. Played lots of Tecmo Bowl. 🙂
Heck yes, my friend. Gameplay is always more important than graphics. A game that looks amazing but is boring is an inferior game to one that looks like garbage but plays amazingly!
Love these kinds of videos
Wow, the KOEI games... now thats a blast from the past. And why does everyone dislike the Bart games. I thought they were good.
I have uncharted waters for my Genesis CIB and I can testify to it being the most approachable Koei games of that era
Oh man, I loved Roadblasters! It was at our local, now nonexistent grocery store.
Best of the Best was called Andre Panza Kickboxing on Turbo Graphix 16. It was good
The Mega Drive version of Paper Boy has perhaps the most amazingly bad Swedish manual of all time. They actually legit translated "The Grim Reaper" to "The vicious rapist", I swear I'm not joking.
It wasn't until a few years back, on a "Simpsons" episode of "Game Sack," that I found out that there was a Genesis port of "The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants." Plus, one port that's usually never talked about, and a lot of people probably don't even know about it, is "Battletoads" on the Game Boy.
Best of the best was also on Snes and on the Amiga 500 know as Panza Kickboxing. Played that game so mutch. I was awsome😁 its sad that there are no games anymore like IK+ those games where just fun😏
Nice Video!
Great comparisons John, Love both systems, Sega had the upper hand but the NES was a more favorite of mine.
Ms. Pac-man on Genesis was my first pac man game. It was fantastic. Love that game.
I also had a paper route at 12 years old, and saved up for my Sega Genesis! I can assume we're probably close, if not the same age lol.
Arch rivals - 2 vs 2 basketball, whole court, no rules, guess that's the ancestor of NBA Jam
I'm pretty sure Arch Rivals IS NBA Jam. They just changed the punch to a hand wave, and of course added a bunch of cool dunks.
Fun fact about Lemmings, it was made by DMA Design, who would later bring us the GTA games and later change their name to Rockstar Games.
The first game that came to mind was "Krusty's Fun House" for both platforms. In Genesis was renamed as "Krusty's Super Fun House"
SNES too, hence the Super.
I have been waiting for this video for a while, SNES next maybe?
I never had pro am on the nes until I got into collecting. I did have it on the genesis as a kid and is easly one of my top 3 games
Omg! I use to love Joe and Mac 1-2! I really want to play it now
I never knew marble madness was on the Genesis. Going to have to check this out!
"Where the f... no, where in time is Carmen Sandiego?" LOL
3:33 Glad you pointed out that the referee in Arch Rivals isn't you, because otherwise I'd be completely fooled. BTW good vid.
0:28 that's tecmo world cup. The actual tecmo cup genesis title was cancelled in the end.. but there is a rom of the game that exists. It plays slightly better than the nes version. Also the nes had a tecmo world cup.. also tecmo cup was a rebrand of a game called captain tsubasa, which is a whole franchise in itself.. there was a captain tsubasa title on the mega cd..
Fun stuff.
Thank you so much for this video I really love SEGA Genesis and my favorite console of all time!!
I do love my SEGA
Love this video!!! Instant Sub!!! 💪🏽
YES Rampart was amazing on the NES. Unfortunately I never played the Genesis version. I did play the SNES version which is an INSANE port
version of the game.
Definitely played Championship Pro Am and I agree with you 100%. An amazing port version of the RC Pro Am Franchise.
( Could you imagine if they had Cobra Triangle or Wizards & Warriors was on the Genesis? 😯)
Also Fun Fact Tyrone from Arch Rivals was on the animated show The Power Team. "Awwwwww Man."
( Season One of The Power Team was part of the show Video Power. Loved both growing up. )
Thanks as always JohnRiggs. I look forward to your other videos on video games that were on other video game systems.
Loved the SNES version with 'propaganda' so use their own cannons against them.
I've spent many an hour with KOEI. Once you figure their games out you can lose track of time pretty quickly.
Amen!
I've played Pirates on the Genesis and Commodore 64. The game is so immersive that you can spend a whole evening playing it. It's not just a game. It's a historical adventure. And the greatest way to enjoy California games is on the c64. You can have a party with up to 8 players.
Did you ever play the Pirates remake from around 2004 called Sid Meier's Pirates? If not, I think it would be worth checking out especially since you can get it for 10 bucks (or less when on sale). You can still get it for PC through things like Steam or GOG, and even digitally on Xbox One and Series X/S.
@@Max-ui7yf I think I'd like to try that one.
Krusty's Fun House was all over the place; it was on many different systems. There's versions on: NES, SNES, Game Boy, Master System, Game Gear, Genesis, Amiga, & DOS. But seems like the best version out of all of them is the SNES version. As far as I've seen so far; haven't checked the Amiga version.
You're right! I should have included that. I knew I missed a few.
@@JohnRiggs It's ok, you could probably make a whole 'nother video about Krusty's Fun House alone, about all the versions of it on different systems.
California Games, the game i rented back in the day and couldn't figure out how to play. Then stuck with it all weekend. haha
You're right. It may indeed be time for a Lemmings reboot!
good list, fun video. U look like the referee on arch rivals btw 😂😂
I loveeeeed side pocket!
Micro Machines and Snake Rattle & Roll were on both. I haven't played the NES version of Lion King so I don't know how similar they are too.
Really fun video
