- Connecting your own cable modem to Xfinity Comcast tutorial. Install your own modem router, I'm installing a Netgear C7000v2, the procedure will be the same for any gateway or modem unless you have phone service.
The Netgear C7000v2 is also called Nighthawk AC1900 Cable Modem Router.
You may want to do a speed test before removing the Xfinity gateway. After your install and activate your own modem or modem router combo, run another speed test to make sure it is working properly.
You can find a list of modems and routers that are compatible with your Xfinity Comcast account. Take note of the default logins and passwords on the new modem router, then unplug the xfinity gateway and disconnect the coaxial cable. Next connect the coaxial cable to your own modem router and power up.
Connect to the WiFi for the new modem router and wait for the Xfinity Comcast page to pop up on your web browser. - Jak na to + styl
Following your instructions I installed and activated my new gateway on Xfinity in 10 minutes! No phone call needed. Thank you for the help.
You are welcome, Michael. When I returned my rented gateway to the Comcast store, they told me I needed to call Comcast and tell them the MAC address. When I called Comcast, they also asked for the model number. Everything seemed to work fine for a week before I gave the MAC address & model number to Comcast. I suspect that many people skip this step.
@@Know-How-Now which MAC address are u referring to. U mean for the old or the new set up router/ modem? I will have a new router coming from Xfinity this week and I'm preparing how to set it up that's why I asked this Q.
I gave them the MAC address from the new router/modem that I bought.
@@Know-How-Now thank you for the reply 👍
Perfect timing on this video. I just found out this week that I don't have to keep their unit. Now I know what to do to make the change. Thanks!
You are welcome, Roy!
Just wanted to stop by and say this is a very helpful channel. Keep up the great work!!
Hi Benny, thank you for taking the time to comment. I do my best to make quality videos and I am having fun making them. Have a great day.
Only needed this video but definitely deserves a sub , short simple and informative
THANK YOU Know How Now! My son asked me to set his up for him as he and his wife haven't been able to do it. I really needed your video. I will try it soon and sure hope I can do it. Thanks again.
You are welcome, Nancy. I hope the set up goes smoothly. So far, I don't have any regrets about buying my own modem/router. It's been trouble free. One thing I did find out when I turned the rental in at the Comcast store. You are supposed to call Comcast and give them the MAC address and the model number of the modem/router. The modem/router worked great for a week without giving Comcast that info. I'd guess many people never do this step.
I am finally going to do this! Thanks so much!
You are welcome. It's been over a year since I bought the modem router. I have no regrets, it's been trouble free so far.
One more thing... When I returned my rental gateway to the Comcast store I was told that I need to call Comcast and give them the MAC address and model number of my modem/router. When I researched replacing the rental equipment no one else mentioned this step. Not the Comcast installation guy or the sales people when I asked about buying my own modem/router. After I authenticated the Netgear C7000v2, everything worked great during the week that I gave it a test run before returning the rental to Comcast. I suspect a lot of people skip this step.
You might find the videos about VOIP (analog phones connected to the internet) helpful. I have moved my land line to VOIP phones - it costs about $9 a month and has been working smoothly for two years:czcams.com/play/PLvce66kQTjJQEiua9TEyRBXu2a9UrFQ6a.html

Hey I have a xfinity boy just like you’re. I bought a Netgear CM 500 and now I realize I needed the combo. So the exact one that you bought in this video, does it a Jack for phone and Ethernet? If so I will get the same one you did.
No jack for the phone. I am using a ATA (Grandstream) and Voiply for the land line.
@@Know-How-Now thank you much
You are welcome.
where exactly do you need to call to do this? customer support? why is this required? thank you! great vid
Hey, totally helpful video. I watched another and it missed a lot. Going to buy a modem today. Really tired of paying the fee and it's going to pay for itself in no time.
It's been over a year since I bought mine. So far it's been trouble free. I have no regrets.
Thanks for the video. Great to see you are using Linux Ubuntu. I dumped MS Windows and Mac years ago for the and never looked back.
You are welcome, Lou. I started using Ubuntu a few years ago. I love it. I started my career with computers that used punch cards. Ubuntu is sort of nostalgic to me.
Thanks for the video, I have Xfinity too and dislike renting their gateway at $14 a month, which in fairness, works just fine for me. I finally bought my own modem and haven't looked back.
Hi Donald, it's nice to hear from you, thanks for taking the time to comment. It's been over a year since I bought my own modem. I have not had any problems either.
Hell yeah we are doing this in 2 days soon as Xfinity comes fix the coax cable that ripped lol. We haven’t had any problems with Xfinity it will be great to be paying $15 dollars less for the gateway on our bill!
Can you please share which modem you purchased? I’m looking to buy my own and not rent theirs. The Xfinity agent told me I need to get one compatible with 1.2 terabytes? I don’t understand that.
@@anthonygiordano3991 NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem CM1200, Amazon.
You are awesome!
I have considered dumping the Comcast equipment, the only thing holding me back is getting Comcast to respond to any potential service issues. Almost without exception when I had had problems it’s been tough getting Comcast to come to the house. Once they realize you are not renting their equipment I expect their response will be “it’s your equipment “. BTW great video
I agree, I think the biggest risk in buying your own is that Comcast might blame your equipment. My plan is that if I get in a shoving match with them, I will buy a new modem. If it doesn't fix the problem, then I can return it (Best Buy gives you 14 days for returns) and pressure Comcast to fix their problem. Other reasons not to buy your own is if you have power problems, get a lot of lightning damage, don't have time to troubleshoot or are not good with technology.
I am currently receiving horrible customer service from Verizon and am now giving them the boot. I've been with them for around 30 years and up until about 5 years ago, they had great customer service. That's why I stayed with them. I know of some real Comcast horror stories, so I was hesitant to switch. I've had cable service from Comcast and during the past few years I have no complaints.
Consumer groups say that if you don't have a least 5 competitors in a business, there is no real competition and no pressure for fair prices and good customer service. "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely."
@@Know-How-Now I know what you mean about Verizon DSL, my mom had it and they were worst to deal with than Comcast.
I think they want to get rid of copper cabling. I've been trying to get them to fix my connection since mid November. I've been waiting since 12/23/20 for Verizon to port my number. I am expecting a fight when I tell them I am not paying them for the time it took to port my number. According the the FCC they are supposed to port it in one day. lol.
Thank you will try as soon as my router/lmodem arrives!!!
So far, I am not regretting that I bought my own router. Best wishes for yours.
Will this work with Xfinity's X1 cable TV service?
Will this work for a xfinity prepaid internet service?
Nice video ....and it's always nice to see a Linux desktop :)
I started my working career with IBM punch cards, though didn't stay in that field. Linux is the way to go.
Thank you same one I got, I wish I the modem router box i bought earlier had a coaxial cable :/ oh well better than paying monthly rent for xfinity modem/routers
You are welcome, so far mine is working great.
Short and sweet video--best kind. I'm curious if you bothered to download/use the Nighthawk app that they tell you to use and if it's worth it? I bought this same modem and the manufacture instructions encouraged the download of the Nighthawk app.
I did not download the Nighthawk app. The modem has been trouble free so far. I have no regrets about ditching the rental unit from Comcast.
My arris modem/router doesn’t show up on list of WiFi networks... any thoughts why?
Any one know he's untwisting for the router input, I need one...I only have a lan cable with square sides on both end.
do you have to download the xf app?
Thank you 🙏🏾
You are welcome, Jonathan.
Does xFinity network allow us to use DOCSIS 3.1 routers? My Netgear CAX 80 worked well last year, but it cannot be connected to xFinity network any more after internet outage in middle of July 2022. I bought another brand of router (DOCSIS 3.1 as well), it does not connect either. But my neighbor uses his own Netgear DOCSIS 3.0 router, it works well.
I went to xFinity website. They have a list of compatible equipment. I bought mine at the local Best Buy... they are going to be stocking whatever is compatible in their area.

I setup this same NETGEAR Night Hawk, On the 5GZH I lost a ton of speed. I am on the 600mpbs plan, I was getting 460 ish with the Xfinity router, any tips or suggestions? I am getting around 240mpbs now.
If it's brand new, you get free tech support from netgear. If I recall correctly, you get 30 days for free. I used it for a question. They were very helpful.
Do you know if you get the lowest plan of $25 with 50mbps and get your own modem/router that it will work just as well if you have the $50 100mbps?
The main thing that matters is that you buy a cable modem that works with Xfinity. They have a webpage with a list of approved modems.
Thanks very match
You are welcome.
I am having an issue with Xfinity where it won't detect my modem on the app or on the computer. Any tips or ideas?
Me too and I’m frustrated
So once you plug in your own modem in to the Cox and u give the other modem to Comcast do u still need to pay for the wifi or no
I can't speak for Cox, but last time I checked the rental fee for a Comcast Modem/Router was around $14 a month. You still have to pay for the internet/wifi service from your provider. Buying your own modem/router eliminates the monthly rental fee.
Clear and succinct. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you.
You're welcome, Ramon.
What a winner. And she’s running Linux.
To switch my xfinity router out will I need to call them or just install the new one?
Initially, I was told by Comcast that it was just plug and play for my own modem/router. The new one did work after I connected it and activated it. When I turned the rental gateway in at the Comcast store, they told me I needed to call Comcast and give them the MAC address and model number. It worked find for two weeks without giving Comcast the info.
I get to the last step, it says my service is activated for my address but then it takes me back to the first page to download the app. No, slow connectivity
I am planning to order a USED exact same modem that i have now from someone. ARRIS TG1862G, Do you think I may have to "reset" it to factory default? to allow the sticker-password to work?
I'd go for the factory default.
Can this be done using a Netgear modem and Netgear router separate? I’ve activated my modem, but I don’t see how to activate the router now…
I’m on the same boat. Xfinity activated my modem but can’t seem to activate my separate router
Anyone know how to fix xfinity prompting you to sign in and then taking you to spectrum page to sign in
How do I change my location I moved to another state
when you say just type in xfinity password? do you mean your old password for xfinity router or the new one on back of netgear router... kinda confused since you did not show screen for each step ...thanks
I assume you are referring to around 1:40 - you sign into your xfinity account - using your xfinity account password - not the password for the modem/router/gateway
I have a different Internet Provider. If I were to switch to Xfinity for their Internet only, and I choose to buy my own modem/router, would Xfinity supply me with the necessary Internet wires? Or would I have to buy that? Or could I use my previous wires?
It depends on who your current internet provider is. I was using Verizon DSL. I had Comcast for TV only. It's likely you will have to pay Comcast for a install fee. The installer replaced some old coax and brought the rental modem/router and set it up. After install of the rental unit, I waited 2 weeks to make sure everything was trouble free. Then I replaced their rental with my own modem/router. Ultimately, it's up to Comcast. You might want to call them and ask. So far I have had no trouble using my own modem/router. At this time I do not regret buying my own.
But when you bought your own modem, you used the wires provided by Xfinity?
There was existing coax cable. When I called to change my services, I had to pay for a installation. I did not ask if I could install and set up myself. I wanted to locate the modem/router at a different place than where the existing coax was located. I don't know Comcast policies, you should contact them to find out if you can do your own install.
Can you control wifi with the xfi app if you get your own router?
You will have to log into the modem/router's interface to make changes. I have found the Netgear interface to be easy to use.
PS- Here's a link to a forum page to confirm: forums.xfinity.com/t5/Your-Home-Network/xFi-Advantage-Now-Available-in-Select-Markets/td-p/3208207
Hi Know How Now. Thank you for this video. ¿Do you know of a cordless phone that a scanner (that receives & broadcasts police/fire/cordless phone/baby monitors) CANNOT intercept, kindly? Thank you. Just thought I'd ask. (If you don't have time to answer, that's ok too). Thanks again.
I do not know about much about that topic. Sorry.
@@Know-How-Now Thank you for the kindness of a reply. God[Bible] Bless.
Will you be able to change your wifi password through the xfinity app after connecting ?
I changed the password using the Netgear interface. I highly doubt that you could change the modem/router's password with xfinity app.
Do you need to hard wire a computer with ethernet? My coax connection is in the living room and our wireless desktops are in other rooms. We would have an Xfinity cable box in the living room next to the modem/router.
Most new computers don't have a ethernet connection. Everything is moving towards WiFi only.
Would this procedure work for any cable ISP
I only have experience with Comcast. If you have a different provider, you might want try a search including your provider's name.
what is the link address to activate ?
Is there a modem/router with the phone port on it? Xfinity charges the phone service whether you have their modem or not so might as well use it. By the way, the $6 month service plan is pointless since everything is wireless except the point where you connect the modem to a cable. That's another $72 per year for nothing.
It's been a while since I researched this. If I remember correctly, Comcast won't allow you to bypass their VOIP phone service. I am using Voiply for a year now and am very pleased with the service. It's about $13.50 a month or you can pay for 1 year. I just paid for a year of service and I think it was around $116. I have a few videos that explain how to connect your hard wired house phones to the adapter & the modem. Click on the channel name and then the playlist tab. There is a playlist for Voip phones. All of the videos are in it.
I like how you are getting away from xfinity AND the Microsoft ripoff companies. We have been having a long list of issues with xfininity, so I am reducing what we pay them, so I am getting our own gateway and replacing the master bedroom xfinity box with a roku. Going to save close to $300 with these 2 changes.
A company called Fast Bridge is running fiber in my neighborhood. I am hoping that a little competition will cause a price drop. Really, internet is a utility. IMHO, it should be run as a non profit utility. I'm sure Comcast is giving a bunch of money (that we don't know about - Thank you supreme court for the Citizen's United ruling!) to our politicians. Until the pipeline of money is stopped nothing is going to change.
Do I have to have a pc to do this? I only have a phone.
Last time I checked you can use your smart phone.
so if ypu buy this you dont have to pay for anything monthly?
No monthly rental fee for the modem/router. I don't know of a way to get around the Comcast TV box rental. I asked a friend who works at Best Buy and he confirmed, no way around it. So far I am not sorry that I bought my own modem/router. It's been trouble free. I got rid of Verizon landline phone and switched to Voiply for VOIP phone service. Verizon was around $46 a month. Voiply has been $13.50 a month. Voiply customer service has been great. I did have to reboot their device a couple of times and had a glitch or two. Problems were quickly resolved. I do have a computer and electronics tech back ground. The VOIP phones might frustrate someone who is not tech savvy. If you click on the channel name, the look for the playlists, I have a few additional videos on VOIP phone service.
So if I get a better router for my aunt and uncle will there be a price drop or raise since they’ll no longer be renting xfinity’s router?
Once you return Comcast's equipment, they will stop charging their rental fee. Though make sure you save proof that you returned it. Comcast is notorious for claiming that you never returned their equipment and keep charging you for it.
Anyways, you'll need a modem and a router. You could also buy a combo unit of a modem and router in one box. Just make sure you buy a device that will work with Comcast. They have a list of approved devices here: www.xfinity.com/support/articles/list-of-approved-cable-modems
Bought a new modem router combo, xfinity claims they cannot activate it and wanted to send a technician to check my coax cable, I then plug in my old modem router combo and it worked perfectly he told me to return it as it is faulty. I believe xfinity is to blame
Im stuck on the Xfinity authentication process. The app is useless and the website is no different for me. I cant even create an account. I have the same modem the the person has in the video but I cant activate it. Somebody please help
Might want to double check on the Xfinity site which modem/gateway is compatible with your particular Wi-Fi plan
Isn't the official Comcast modem better with it's cable?
It's been a while since I've installed my own modem. It's been trouble free.
You can get phone for free if you buy your own phone modem you have to know what you are doing and how to port.
Keeps asking me to dl app no luck
You need to revise your title. It should read Connect and Activate Your Own Cable Gateway to Xfinity Comcast. Comcast calls a modem/router combination a gateway. There is a big difference between activating a modem and a gateway.
The video has over 85,000 views, the likes vs the dislikes is 97.5% for the likes. You are the only one complaining about the title. If the title doesn't match the content, viewers drop off in the first 15-30 seconds... this is not happening with the video. Your channel has no videos or subscribers. Thanks for the advice, but I won't be taking it.
@@Know-How-Now I’m not complaining, just pointing out something that isn’t accurate. Yes you have great stats, but that doesn’t mean your title isn’t inaccurate. As of this writing, there are 78 comments and replies. That means less than 0.92 percent of viewers take the time to comment. Perhaps it isn’t so remarkable that I am the first to bother commenting on the title. I would have thought you would be more concerned about technical accuracy than a perception of criticism, which wasn’t the intent. I’m sorry you took it that way.
I don't mind the criticism, it's always welcome here. I do object to unsolicited advice on how to run my channel. Again your lack of experience in uploading videos is showing by your inaccurate observation about how many comments there are on this video. The number of comments on this video is actually above the average for this channel.... though you wouldn't know that because you have no videos and no data on which to base a judgement.
@@Know-How-Now I’ll say it again. I wasn’t complaining or criticizing. I was simply pointing out an inaccuracy in your title.
I don’t think suggesting that you change one word in the title of one video could be construed as advice on how to run your channel.
I have other channels on CZcams. I use this one for commenting. I have created and uploaded many videos. I’m very familiar with CZcams Studio and analytics. But that’s all irrelevant to my point. Despite all the analytics, and how this video compares to others, the simple fact is that less than 1% of viewers have commented on this video. (80 is less than 1% of 580K)
So I think we have both expended enough energy on this trivial pursuit. I know I have anyway. Good luck on your future endeavors.
Oh, I see you use "my comments" to troll other people's channels.
Honestly I see how this would help a person, but it is not that easy.
I am not adult and I can hook things up pretty easily but it is not even reading anything.
Supposedly I have a technician coming and they won't charge me but it's ridiculous that anyone has to come out and actually do anything. I have put in passwords I have put in all the stuff I'm supposed to do and it looks like it's going to connect and then it does not
Thanks for telling me how to unplug a cable wire and a plug this video is useless
You are welcome, Richard!
