Why We Fidget & Why it Helps

  • Is this you? Tapping your fingers. Bouncing a leg. Fiddling with a pencil, pen, keys, rings, bracelets, cutlery, dreadlocks, rubber baands...
Until someone yells, "Stop that! Don't you know how annoying that is?"
Actually, you probably had no idea we were even doing it. Embarrassed, you stop. For a minute or two. And then, tap-tap-tap...
Why do we fidget? Is it something to worry about? A problem? Or could it be helpful?!
While other folks may find your fidgeting distracting, it may actually help you to manage agitation and improve your ability to focus and think.

The first day of every class in college, I would go to the professor and explain how my doodling was not me ignoring him but my way of keeping my mind from going off in left field, as it would if I were to just sit there and look like I am listening.
When I am trying to stay busy on a task that is hard for me to stay focused on, I find energetic instrumental music is helpful but lyrics can be distracting.

Loved you since Prisoners of Gravity. I never noticed how much I fidget until recently. Usually it's a a scrap paper like a receipt or a scraped off label. I think taking off labels is another part of the fidgeting.

I wear alot of jewelry and keep those telephone cord type hair ties on my wrists to play with. You can stretch them, twist them, or thumb through the loops.

I swear I was listening to what you were saying (well to most of it).
But I also had to think about if those two Macs in the background would look better if one of them was mirrored (e.g. every slot and logo on the left side) or if that would look weird 🤔
Anyway, very good video! Really helpful content as always. Please keep doing it! 🙏

I have one of those "fidget cubes", which is very useful - when I actually remember to bring it with me.
Luckily I wear a ring that I never take off, and just spinning that around my finger helps too.

Often in meetings that run too long or stop engaging me: Writing the alphabet. Script, then print; upper and lower case. Looks like I am taking notes, and it is easier to concentrate.

I think better when fidget when i should place things either concentrate and try to focus on that or get back on track in all thoughts, and then its calm and feels good. But i did try to not do that when im around others when i was younger but my tounge did fidget my pointy side fangs alot instead and i probably was jawing wich probably others saw anyways. Tho i am a fiddler i dont like other esp pen fiddling bc of its sound 🤣 but i understand them when i get disturbed on other strange fiddler that i recon myself i place on purpose or give them another soft thing. And oh i remember when i worked at a place i had a co worker but he had horrible fiddle when he was thinking that was a embarrasment esp when we had visitors that was interested to see inside. I had to walk in between and the first thing i grabbed was a huge fruit basket 🤣🤣i was in hurry myself bc i started to be ashamed and i knew this co worker and also understood he is not thinking about any sexual but he tended to stroke himself outside his pants when he talked about something that was his major interest and to be informative also adding his view and no he didn't get erection but i saw the visitors started react like wtf is this!? Awkward big time. But he took the fruit basket for me bc i said hey help me out and hold this, wich he did and he fiddled the basket with his finger instead. And kept talking and into his world of the best talking subject he liked the most. The other co workers that was around was like ooouff and smiled and hail that fruit basket. Lol he stood with that basket whole time thank god and were closing his speech like 45 min later when he noticed hey wth am i suppose to do with this basket of fruit!? 🤣🤣🤣

I think stimming is just one step higher than figetting. They are very closely related.

    • @jeremykermott537
      @jeremykermott537 Před 2 lety +1

@@gabedom_ regarding the "not always fashionable" note ...it depends on your style and the crowd you run with. Chain wallets have been around since at least the early 90's. In my experience, they are always in vogue for truckers, punk rockers, and bikers; they are often in fashion with other style groups, on a rotating basis. But, if it's your style, it's your style!
