The fact that he only reluctantly accepts that he's a rock drummer at all just adds to the magic. The complete package: music visionary composer, director, artist, editor, and producer! Wilson said he doesn't want to be the most skilled virtuoso in the band; instead, he carefully selects the incredible talents he needs to bring his compositions to fruition ... he shares his musical vision, points them in the right direction, and then turns them loose! Brilliant, they're all top-drawer musicians. Kudos on this selection!

Porcupine Tree isn't nearly as popular as they ought to be. If you like this, I definitely suggest trying Sleep Together. This band, this song in particular, defines what one as a fan of progressive rock or metal understands, loves and perpetuates: it is expressing an idea, a story and everything in the song does it organically at the same time. It doesn't matter if it lasts 30 minutes, there is enough coherence and musical complexity. Nothing is left over, nothing is missing, everything fits.

This song is from the album Fear of a Blank Planet, which is a concept album about the effects of the internet age on kids, all against the backdrop of the concurrent overmedication and overdiagnosis of mental illnesses in children. I don't think Stephen would ever claim that there aren't truly sick kids who need medicating, I think he's just saying that it became a crutch for psychiatrists to fall back on, not to mention a lucrative one, that had very real and negative effects on some kids.

They focus more on immersive textures over overly complicated guitar riffs and solos. I even like the very early material. Like On the Sunday of Life and Tarquins Seaweed farm. Because its psychedelic and unhinged. The kind of atmosphere stuff like Don't Hug me I'm Scared has. He is apparently abit inspired by disturbing british childrens television like that. And in some of the earlier material it shows.

Welcome my friend the Porcupine Tree. This band started out as a joke in the late 80s, and slowly progressed to this. The lead singer of this band is also the producer of Opeth, but he has done numerous other projects, including office of strategic influence., his own solar work, and has digitally remastered several albums into Dolby Atmos. Most of their songs are not as long as this, but this is for sure their greatest masterpiece.. I went to see them live in 2008, and although it was a very small venue, it was probably one of the best shows I’ve ever been to. but there are several more things to explore now that you have explored Porcupine Tree.. your fun is just beginning.

Love Porcupine Tree, another great prog band! They broke up around 2011 and Steven Wilson has some great solo projects, but they've come back together and had a ne4w album out this past year! I think they lost at least one former member though who didn't return due to other obligations. Hope you do Arriving Somewhere but Not Here live next; they always sound great live.

I've just discovered your channel and.... welcome to my world. My favourite bands are : Opeth, Porcupine Tree and Tool. I've been hearing them for 20 years and will never stop, never been bored. Check : Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet and Blackest Eyes, Trains, Arriving Somewhere but not here (Albums : Deadwing, Lightbulb Sun, In Absentia and Fear of a Blank Planet), Opeth : Forest of October (live in Royal Albert Hall), Baying of The Hounds, Harlequin Forest, Black Rose Immortal, The Moor, Deliverance, Blackwater Park, Wreath, Sorceress, DEMON OF THE FALL (WOOOOW Best growl ever heard), more progressive rock style : Moon Above, Sun Below, the Devil's Orchard. Solo Steven Wilson album The Raven that refused to sing is a masterpiece too IMO. Highly recommended from a prog metal fan. Enjoy !

If Danny from Tool is my favourite drummer, Gavin is a photo finish second. He always manages to find the time to put some tasty stuff in there. I don’t think he can make mistakes.
Also I haven’t heard this song live, only the album version. This was as good as that!

I'd argue this is even better than the album. :)
And I was lucky enough to see and hear this live last October from the first row.

Late to the party here, but another band with an oh-so slightly Tool vibe is the Swedish band Soen, that has Martin Lopez formerly of Opeth (and the 1st Amon Amarth album) on drums.

The multiple sections is what I love about progressive music like this song, or Opeth. It really feels like storytelling. Each section is a different part of the whole journey, with its own message and tone and growth into the next stage of the journey. You can't get that feeling with a typical 3 minute song that goes "verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus".

That is the genius of Steven Wilson.
He can write these elaborate songs AND good pop songs equally.
    The whole album is amazing.

Porcupine Tree are amazing. Gavin Harrison is one of the best rhythmic drummers I have ever heard, and I've heard quite a few in 65 years.
