I appreciate your reference to tie the Ahab remark back to Trek but I think you're way off the mark with this one.
I am a ships Master, I have a crew, and the number one responsibility of a ships master is to get your crew home safe. Ahab put the lust for his revenge above all else, and got himself and his entire crew killed (save for Ishmael).
Picard is an archeologist and has a definite affinity for old things, especially literature. Pointing out that he was willing to kill his entire crew for his ambitions showed that he was a failure as a captain, something I suspect Jean-Luc would never allow.

It only really seems likely from an anthrocentric viewpoint. Remember, Q appears as human to make encounters with humans easier for us to understand. Even when we see the Q's plane of existence, we're told that everything we see is a simplified illusion since our minds apparently couldn't understand the infinite possibilities contained within each Q and their realm.
We see them as a bunch of humans standing around a house because that's the most logical way for a human mind to understand a collection of entities. we have no way of knowing what they "really" look like.
With the ability to travel to any point in time and space and insantly change things to you whims, there doesn't seem to be any reason to "guide" humanities evolution when they have the power to instantly turn us in to gods (Like they did it that one TNG episode to Riker I think)
It seems more likely, given their nature of being somewhat petulant and bored that Q just enjoys torturing humans. I imagine that each Q spends some time with each and every life form in the universe, trying to learn about them and understand them, evenrually getting bored and testing their limits and then moving on to the next unwitting species.

We've known since Enterprise that waste wasn't discarded, but repurposed. Trip went so far as to say they could even make boots using the protein resequencers(if I remember correctly). Now while the replicators of Discovery may break the waste down to their atomic level, we know the replicators of the TNG era use a complete matter/energy system. This is one of the reasons Janeway chastised Chakotay for replicating a watch as a gift to her, even if he had saved replicator rations to produce it. A side note: it was only after she found the watch and realized Chakotay disobeyed the order to return it to the replicator that she saw the gift's value, keeping it on hand as she continued through the Year of Hell.
That all said, we know that there are toilets, even bath tubs, on starships(Diana Troi always seems to have one around. Also Neelix used one in Voyager's premier). However I don't think there's much evidence of pipes running through the bowels of the ship by the 24th century. And there bloody well better be toilets on those shuttles. Those trips can be long...

Also I believe it was in the episode Simitude when Sim was considering "running away from home", he made the comment that there aren't any bathrooms on shuttle pods, which brings to mind the episode of Shuttle Pod One. Malcolm and Trip were stranded for quite sometime... all of that bourbon had to go somewhere.

Remember too Picard is confronted with this past and takes crap over it from Sisko and presumably others at times as well. He becomes a somewhat controversial figure some questioning even if he should be allowed to return as Captain. Basically he got raped and was forced to do horrible things against his world and then half the world sees him as tainted and hates him so he has a HUGE grudge with the Borg.
That all being said - it is true humans were more evolved then and whales/dolphins actually have a place on the Enterprise. That fits with my fan theory of choice. That Captain Braxton's time ship crash created the multi-verse. It's established in TOS that the Eugenics War was devastating and happened in the mid-late 1990s, but when Janeway and crew beam down to the 1990s later there is no mention of any war and Janeway wasn't even surprised about that. So TOS is how history would have played out with no time travel. Including, computer age of the 90s stunted because of the devastation of the 90s. Voyager lands in an alternate time line closer to our timeline where armed with knowledge of this war to come, mankind did something about it and prevented it from happening. Genetic engineering was banned and prevented early on. The ban on genetic manipulation wasn't a result of the war but a fear of what it could have led to. It's perfectly possible in this timeline that the war did happen sometime later into the 21st century. Enterprise and Strange New Worlds both mention the war but not the 1990s. Which may explain why their tech is more advanced than TOS but having someone called Noonien-Soong on the bridge is still a bit controversial. Now at the same time, there could be another timeline where people found out about the upcoming war and it made them more scared. More isolationist. Borders closed. Fear won out. Violence was the result. And that's where the mirror universe came from.

One thing fans never consider is that some aliens in Star Trek actually have learned English and are actually speaking English. Vulcans have referred to English as a "relatively simple language", so a lot of Vulcans have presumably learned English and are actually speaking English. A lot of the Vulcans serving in Starfleet have actually learned English and are actually speaking English, e.g.: Spock, Tuvok, and T'Pol. It is not the universal translating translating Vulcanese to English, a lot of Vulcans actually do know how to speak English and will actually speak English. Some Klingons have actually learned how to speak English, e.g: Worf. Worf was adopted by a human family and raised by that family on Earth from a young age. Worf was presumably taught English and can actually speak English (as a second language). Worf may even actually speak English better than he can speak Klingonese, but refuses to admit this fact. Also, in the movie Star Trek Beyond, the alien named Jaylah is shown to actually know how to speak English. They even explain that Jaylah learned to speak English from music and the records of the starship she lived on, all in English. So not all the aliens are speaking alien languages that are translated by the UT, only most of them of them. A lot of the fans seem to forget this from time to time.

Everyone goes to the bathroom like normal, when flushed the waste is sent to processing to turn it back into raw material for the replicators. That way if there is a problem you don't accidently beam someone's colon to raw materials, you just have to flush a septic tank.
Also the comments I've seen where "oh they've been modified not to poop anymore": (because I've seen that in multiple locations ffs)
    1) you mean the culture that won't genetically fix horrifically debilitating genetic diseases (even though they have the tech showing how on their computers no less that anyone can access with no clearance) will somehow super colon the entire species? : No

It makes perfect sense as well. Having bodily waste broken down into its base components on an atomic level would render everything completely sterile and just fine for use in food replication. This way you would create a closed system that makes logistical issues far less of a hassle. Also people complaining about the quality of replicated food probably all have way too high standards, because if the food is reassembled out of raw molecules into what ever dish you desire it should be indistinguishable from self prepared actual meals, since it would be identical. Maybe for people in the 24th century, preferring an actual naturally grown T-bone steak roasted over a charcoal fire over the exact same steak from a replicator is just a psychological thing.

    • @bjoernusw5195

The dishes will mostly taste rather similar but not always exactly the same unlike replicator dishes which will always taste the same given the same request.
An easy way to fix this would be to take a few dozen cooks and let them make their own slight variations of the same dish then scan all those dishes and when someone requests a dish from a replicator randomly pick one of the dozens of saved variations.

They make more sense in general. Touchscreen controls are ideal for multi purpose devices. Most of the consoles on the bridge and elsewhere have dedicated purposes and everybody has access to tricorders and datapads. It makes sense to use the portable handheld devices for multipurpose and reserve sturdier more tactile controls for the most important functions.
It would be rather inconvient, for example, if somebody had adjusted Worf's control scheme without notifying him causing him to launch torpedoes instead of powering up shields.
There are also an abundance of engineers onboard who can reconfigure controls if they are ever needed, but since it would take a bit of work to do they're unlikely to change without good reason.
I can only hope that by the 25th century, they've managed to make a touchscreen that actually works and doesn't break under the smallest amount of stress. I'm sure touchscreens have a pretty limited application in actual militaries today for good reasons.

I really wish the universal translators had been better explained. They've always seemed like a magically flawless plot device that never failed to work perfectly. Are they proximity based? If so, how are the crew still able to communicate with people when their commbadges are taken away? How are they still able to work just as well in the Delta Quadrant when it hadn't been charted or explored by the Federation? There are thousands of languages on earth alone, not to mention the rest of the galaxy; how does a device the size of a commbadge have the storage space for half the galaxy's linguistic database when ship's computers are so big?
It's a bit of a stretch, but I once heard the theory that because the translator gives everyone a generic "American" accent, characters who speak with an accent are actually speaking Federation Standard itself instead of filtering it through a translator. It goes a little bit of the way to explaining why Deanna speaks with a slight accent and her mother doesn't, or why Chekov and Worf's parents maintain Russian accents when many other earth languages, like French, are believed to be dead. I've also noticed that Worf's speech pattern is somewhat stiff and formal compared to other Klingons and he never uses any contractions. Maybe that's some weird effect of the translator too?

I suspect that's more because "leak" is modern-era slang. Star Trek IV showed the crew really wasn't very familiar with some of the esoteric "colorful metaphors" of American English... and it's pretty obvious from the way they talk in TOS and TNG/DS9/VOY episodes that future English has almost entirely lost slang, as well as a reason to be crude. Out of universe, it's obviously to get rated as family-friendly TV, but it makes just as much sense in-universe too. Languages evolve over time, and we're talking as big a gap between George Washington & us today as between us & Captain Picard. They're far better educated too: highly educated people tend to only use swear & slang words when absolutely justified for precision emphasis, rather than spewing them around indiscriminately. Over a few centuries of advanced education for everyone & the elimination of poverty and crime... yeah, it's totally plausible that a lot of slang would go the way of ye olde tyme hystory books.

Well... As soon as his parents allow him to run out back and play again trulane grabs his magnifying glass to burn some ants with. Except Captain Kirk is not there to play with now. (Humans have much shorter lifespan than the Q.) Instead he finds Picard in command of his favorite starship. And Picard's no fun to play with. But then he finds riker and riker is fun to play with.
Given this back story, Q's fascination with the Enterprise and humanity in general becomes perfectly understandable he's a little kid with a magnifying glass playing with an anthill in the backyard.

When they say that #10 is ridiculous, I think it makes MUCH more sense that they use the transporters and replicators to break down waste into their component atoms for use later than say that they store waste.

8:20 I suggest the book series 'The Queendom of Sol' by Wil McCarthy. It's good science fiction centered around the idea of fax-gates (basically teleporters) copies of people, mortality, when death just means to lose the few moments until you last used a gate and all of the good stuff if you really overthink teleporter technology :D

I always assumed that waste was recycled by a replicator like device converting it to energy. We've seen leftover food recycled in the food replicator so that just makes the most sense to me.

I KNEW my Enterprise (D) manual would come in handy one day. According to it (re sewage):
    """
    WATER AND SEWAGE RECYCLING
Each crew member aboard the Enterprise typically generates approximately 52 liters of wastewater and sewage per day. This wastewater is pumped to treatment and recycling units located in the environmental support complexes on Decks 6, 13, and 24. Preliminary treatment is accomplished by a series of mechanical filtration processes that remove solids and particulates. (The residue is conveyed to the organic waste processing system for further treatment and recycling.) Osmotic and electrolytic fractioning is then employed to remove dissolved and microscopic contaminants for treatment and recycling. The resulting water is superheated to 150°C for biological sterilization before being subjected to a final mechanical filtration stage, then it is returned to one of several freshwater storage tanks for reuse.
The various waste sludges recovered from the water recycling processes are a valuable resource. The organic waste processing system subjects the sludge to a series of sterilizing heat and radiation treatments. The waste is then electrolytically reprocessed into an organic particulate suspension that serves as the raw material for the food synthesizer systems. Remaining byproducts are conveyed to the solid waste processing system for matter replication recycling.

Since matter can be converted into energy and vice versa, i mostly assume when someone goes to the toilet they just converte the .."dark matter" into energy. This is the same mystery question like in demolition man with the 3 shells. ps.: in Star Trek Elite Force the game, u even see those shells in the bathroom.

Funnily enough with the revelations that Whales are much more intelligent than we knew at the time... Ahab was actually on the money that Mobey was genuinely as invested in the duel as he was.
Kinda interesting that as mad as Ahab was getting himself and his crew killed... maybe if the crew believed as he did they may have stood a chance.
