    The problem with this is that it does not deincentivize leaving oneself open while attacking enough because once the first hit occurs the point is over. This doesn't simulate that in a lightsaber fight the opponent would likely still hurt you if you only hit them a split second before they hit you. Thus, no point should be awarded if the opponent gets a hit within a second or so of the initial hit. This will make for significantly more interesting fights where contestants actually make blade contact instead of just both lunging at each other trying to beat the other by a millisecond

    • @nodomza
      @nodomza Před rokem +9

      It's just kendo, it follows japanese armoured sword fighting - no shield means you're very likely going to die, the objective is to make sure you kill your opponent before that happens. Head strikes and lung / heart stabs are favoured because limbs (and thus swing power / follow through) stop real quick once the lights go out, increasing the odds that the injury you receive won't be as bad / your armour can do its job.

    • @halcyonsikes7018
      @halcyonsikes7018 Před rokem

      "deincentivize", what does that mean? I agree with a lot of what you are saying. I think this format makes it really boring to watch. too. (looks boring for the competitors as well)

    • @IceBrys
      @IceBrys Před rokem +1

      Same rules with fencing. As someone who appreciates fencing I can assure you this is basically what fencers do, the most important thing is being the first one to make contact. Although it doesn't look as flashy as the fights from the movies, this is almost certainly what lightsaber combat would be, as a death stick needs to be respected regardless of where or how it hits you, leading to safe combat and getting the first hit

    • @IceBrys
      @IceBrys Před rokem +4

      Canonically the only reason lightsaber fights are so flashy is because they take place between opponents that can see the future possibilities before they happen. Think a grandmaster in chess, seeing several moves ahead, leading to calculated risk, as opposed to a beginner that can at best see a couple moves in advance, throwing their pieces at any idea just to try to break their opponent before they are broken themself

    • @IceBrys
      @IceBrys Před rokem +2

      I mean this with zero malice towards the people in the video, especially the red combatant, that it feels to me like the beginner chess analogy. I don't know their exact rules for what counts as contact, but I would guess a poke/thrust is considered such (death stick). A thrust is the most effective use of distance (and swordfighting is the art of managing distance), yet both fighters in the video seem to be favoring swings. A swing is very projected, gives the opponent an open door before the swing and after follow through, and provides no real strategic advantage outside of looking flashy. Swings can also be parried very easily, leading to openings for a thrust.
      Any intermediate-advanced fencer would tear the competitive scene on display here into shreds, but for what they have it's still very entertaining to watch. Traditional fencing would be so much cooler with glowing death sticks

    • @xCoNa14
      @xCoNa14 Před 4 lety +13

      Also lightsabers have no weight to them, so wielding one is incredibly disadvantageous against staff sabers or the classic 1 short and 1 long dual weild. One sword only works with heavy double handed blades, because M×A=F, so there's a lot of force behind it, but lightsabers don't have mass and don't really need force to cut through things, so that tactic is out of the window, leaving you much more vulnerable holding just one. Youd just rely on speed to attack and strength when blocking, a staff can attack immediately after blocking or attacking as there's almost no recovery needed with the strikes, and a dual weilder could just stab or slice with their off hand whilst distracting you with their main hand or deflecting your attack and stabbing you with the other whilst you're in swing recovery

    • @goat9295
      @goat9295 Před 4 lety +22

      Force sensitive lightsaber duelists don't strike to kill, they always swing there lightsaber in a way to disorient their opponent. That's why you see duels in the prequels looking like "dances". They aren't trying to hit their opponent, because they can easily counter and get killed in an instant.

    • @smackmmk
      @smackmmk Před 2 lety +7

      I do kendo as my martial art, and personally kendo is far more entertaining and fair. It also has a stronger point system. There was so many times when both opponents clashed or hit each other in the same beat, but one was awarded a point. In kendo neither would have been awarded the point. It's not just about hitting the person first, it's about hitting the opponent and not getting hit back. If both players hit each other in the same beat, and the refs, who obviously aren't seeing which one actually scored first in a lot of these points, award one of the players a point when they both realistically would both be dead. This is why kendo has a stronger point system, because if you hit, that attack would have actually killed someone in real life, if it was a actually sword, as well as you moving as to not die yourself. Judges have to be trained for years to make accurate scoring decisions. In this, it's not the same, Plus one-handed rapier styles or going to be at far and away more advantageous than a two-handed sword or katana style. The win condition for each weapon is completely different. A rapier needs to simply stab or touch an opponent, a long sword or katana needs to cut the opponent. This means a light touch without a lot of force can win you the point with a rapier versus a katana or longsword which needs to have a strong cut. This means the long sword user has to come in slightly closer and make his attacks more committed, versus the rapier user that can play a protracted game of pool and barely tap the opponent at a distance. With a lightsaber it's a mixture of the two weapons. while a lightsaber can incinerate your flesh by mere touch, it won't fully burn you if it is a light touch, which is why in all the Star wars movies they act as if they are cutting them like a katanas or long swords, rather than using them like rapiers. I think this rule set should make the two styles very distinct, and have their own systems for points. Two handed, or longsword type styles should work on kendo rules. While one handed, or rapier styles should work on fencing rules.
