Kishore da's voice was gift from God, he proved the fact that voice quality is much more important than classical singing training. unmatchable voice quality which pierce into your heart like a true love....... I wish he would have access to modern music instruments, you can't even think how good he was going to sound........
Kishore Da has the ability to bring variation according to the actors. For example Devanand, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh, Rishi Kapoor. He always kept unique touch according to the actors
I just want to say one thing. There is no one like kishore da. Other singers were trained by human beings but he was trained by the Almighty. That's why he was the best. His voice and his song's will never be outdated. He was a Genius. Actors of those days would be incomplete without his voice for sure. Just imagine.

If u listen to a Kishore Kumar song, u can exactly visualize under what circumstances the actor is singing it in the movie. Feelings, emotions, mood, those subtle nuances very simply great in Kishore songs. These can neither b taught , nor inherited(his sons come no where near him). It is a gift given by God Kishore had that gift.
i feel when you listen to a song you listen to for the voice quality and melody. long after you have seen the movie after years if you think about the actor who did dramatic facial expressions every time when you listen to the song, the beauty of the song is lost. why should we think of any actor when we listen to a song.i think we should hear it just as a song without having the burden of thinking about the movie the story the drama the awkward expressions of those actors.

It’s a fact that Kishore Kumar’s voice is so special that your attention will be always on him whether the particular song is also some other’s (male or female) version or a duet. There are many examples : Mere naina saawan bhaado (Mehbooba), Zindegi ek safar (Andaaz), Bane chaahe dushman (Dostana), Na jaane kaise (Badalte Rishte), Ye dosti (Sholey), Hum ko tum se ho gaya hai pyar (Amar Akbar Anthony) … list is long, i can name at least 30 songs starting from 1950s, sung by both other male & female legends, solo or duet. Why it is so ? What is so special in Kishore Da’s voice ? Voice clarity (whatever language he sings he sings with very clear pronunciation), exceptional BASS and softness, his exceptional quality to connect with the situation of the song - the mood of the song. Nobody has it. Even when Kishore Kumar talks it sounds like singing - it is so melodious and harmonic ! Unless one has those unique qualities nobody could monopolize playback singing for two decades - 1970 & 1980 belong to Kishore Da only. Thank GOD that Kishore Kumar did not take formal training when he started singing; otherwise he would have ended up as an average singer and we would have never got a trend setter, a REAL LEGEND.

Lets dig in further to Rafi’s sheer talent, Despite RD Burman having more Kishore songs, when it came to Qawwalis, RD went to Rafi mostly as Qawwalis wasn’t really Kishore’s cup of tea even though Kishore has sung a few Qawwali songs. Ironically with RD Burman, his fame came to the scene initially having Rafi singing most of his earlier songs with RD rise to the main spotlight from Teersi Manzil 1966 with all songs sung by Rafi which was a superhit musical, where was Kishore at the time, as he became a singer in films from 1948. The film Muqaddar Ka Sikandar 1978, the hit song "Rote Hue Ate Hain Sab" sung well by Kishore but a sad version was required, but Kalyanji-Anandji wanted Rafi to sing a few lines to end the film but Rafi apparently suggested it was Kishore’s song so Kishore should sing the sad version but on Kalyanji-Anandji insistence they thought the in depth emotions of the sad version should be sung by Rafi only and he did just that in "Zindagi To Bewafa Hai" The film Amar Deep 1979 Rajesh Khanna starrer all songs by Kishore but for the end scene of the film a few emotional lines was required by Rafi to render "Duniya Mein Sada". Why not Kishore ? after all songs were sung by Kishore in the film. For the film Pyaasa 195, Rafi showed his amazing vocal modulation for singing the deep philosophical songs for Guru Dutt while singing for Comical playful Johnny Walker in the same film and you would think how could this be the same singer. This was widely noted by Bollywood artists for Rafi’s vocal range and modulation on different actors. From the film Haathi Mere Saathi 1971, A Rajesh Khanna movie and of course all songs by Kishore but for the song "Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke", Kishore was unable to perform the song as to Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s expectations as this song required powerful high emotions to the story of the film and it was even proposed to leave this song out of the film but it was finally decided and further backed by LP, Rajesh Khanna etc. they needed this song so it was decided to bring Rafi in and he rendered the song so emotionally and powerfully as required was proved to be a big hit indeed. All the songs from the film Hum kisise Kum Naheen were fantastic superhit songs sung mainly by Kishore, Asha and Rafi. Both Kishore and Rafi was given 4 songs each by RD Burman. If you look carefully Kishore had all peppy songs while Rafi had a variation song styles from Romantic,happy, Qawwali and sad. As everyone should know the song “kya hua tera wada” became the overall superhit rage and won Rafi the Filmfare and National Award in 1978 ironically by a RD Burman song for which Kishore never achieved this winning combination from a RD number from all the RD/Kishore hits they had together. I could go on further forever if I wanted to but it will have no end. So one should think carefully before making crude statements against singers. Further to this Javed Akhtar tells the story of recording of the song "Yun hi gaate raho" from Saagar , where Kishore da had to sing along with SPB. With all due respect to SPB ji, he sang his part really well, and the kind of bold voice he has, Javed Akhtar said he started worrying how Kishore Kumar's voice will sound in comparison of SPB's , who had to record his lines the next day. Those day Kishore da was recovering form his hearth attack that he had some time back. And when Dada came next day and sang his lines, again his lines stood out like anything ...

RD Burman was a fan of Kishore just like you. It's a irony that Aaradhna's all songs were supposed to sing by Rafi which were composed by SD Burman but he left due to a serious illness and that's how RD Burman approached Kishore Kumar. KK's voice is surely of God's voice. It can't be compared with others. All duet songs sung by KK and others, always audiences given preference to the one and only KK. Other solo songs if sung by others (individually), always KK's songs was super duper hit. Lata Mangeshkar ji knew it very well, it happened several times.
You are absolutely right. Even Kishorda and Rafisaheb both sung Zindagi ek Safar hai Suhana.....(Movie - Andaz) but people still remember Kishorda's version. Also Rote hue.... ( Muqdar ka Sikander) . People love Kishorda's version only. I agree with Javedsaheb.
The main version as intended and composed for kishor only with incorporated yodelling by SJ. Only situational sad version was for RAFI SAHAB but RAFI sung it way way better than kishor version.
We cannot simply compare two songs of the same title sung in completely different situations and moods. Rafi saab's versions of the two quoted songs were sung completely different in accordance to the storyline scene. Rafi had a few lines and was not in a masti mood with Zindagi ek Safar hai Suhana compared to Kishore's happy fun loving storyline scene. With Muqdar ka Sikander Kishore's version is completely different altogether with Rafi's emotional sad version. If you watch the interview with Adnanji (one half of the music duo) he clearly states they wanted Rafi saab to sing those few emotional lines as nobody could do justice vocally to the sad ending of the film. Ask yourselves why not give Kishore those few sad lines after all he was the main singer of that title song. By giving Rafi just a few short lines in a film to end a very emotional ending states a lot !!! Same goes for Rajesh Khanna movie Amar Deep, all Kishore songs in the movie but Rafi saab was chosen to sing a few short lines to an emotional sad ending. Again in the Rajesh Khanna movie Haathi Mere Saathi, again all Kishore songs but Rafi was chosen to sing the very emotional song ' Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke ' which gave a very powerful emotional impact on that scene. I could go with an endless list of a examples but one must say with all due respect to Javed saab, whether he was scripted to say what he said or whatever but here I've clearly stated nothing but factual truths which just washes away this edge rubbish against Rafi saab and other singers. Its clearly known and was stated by Sonu Nigaam that there is this anti-Rafi lobby within the industry. Example - Why does RD Burman have the spotlight generally focused on him only ( that's not to say he a was not a superb talented music director ) but what about the other talented music directors who gave classic musical hits, have we forgotten them entirely ?? No doubt Kishore was a superb versatile singer but how many GOD based religious songs did Kishore cover compared to Mohd Rafi range of Hindu devotional & Muslim devotional & Christian devotional, not forgetting how many private religious albums did Kishore do comapred to Rafi ? Its a known fact Mohd Rafi covered more different styles of music than any other singer of his time !! He sung in more languages than Kishore, Rafi was the first artist to pioneer overseas live shows, Rafi sung numerous patrotic songs including singing for soldiers on the front line, there are known situations when singers like Kishore, Mukesh etc. were unable to fullfil the in-depth emotional requirements of a particular song and Rafi was called to render the song. Kishore Kumar's falsetto was the best in the world by a wide margin. His vibrato was the most natural vibration EVER by any singer from any country. When Kishore Kumar used vibrato, it never interfered with the emotions of the song. It used to act as a delicate fine touch. While other singers were using vibrato as if like "see see i am using vibrato". Kishore Kumar was a very intelligent singer.

So for me, it is Rafi, Kishore, Asha and Lata, it is sequential, but it is so close that they are indistinguishable. Rafi's voice moves me and is Angelic, kishore is more manly, fun and energetic, Asha is playful and Lata is melodious. It is difficult to chose, but since Rafi's voice moves me emotionally and I identify with it, it is my number 1 choice. :-). Just personal preference not putting down anybody.
Lata is great but then so is Asha an incomparable singer. Lata, Asha, Rafi and Kishore are all brilliant singers who have ruled the recording studios of Mumbai. Their success is incomparable!

Most judges/singers/musicians don't call Mohammad Rafi No.1 ever green playback singer without having valid reasons. See the actor and hear the song of Mohammad Rafi, correctly matches to the act of the actor, the song sync with the pose of the actor. This is really hard thing to do. Kishore Kumar was definitely a great legend but he tended to focus more on the feel/music. . His approach was different but not necessarily syncing with the actors acting . But Mohammad Rafi is the Lord of melody and shall remain intact in his position forever. Let me clear again, if you hear Kishore Kumar's song, it feels same(without video or with video). But, when Mohammad Rafi sings, with video it feels totally synced to the performance of the actor, this is a really really really hard thing to do. Mohammad Rafi used to take 4-5 hours, testing, experimenting with his voice for a song. Let me clear you again, both are legends, both have some different things. Singers like Mohammad Aziz, Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam, Arman Malik, Sanam follow the style of Mohd Rafi. Singers like Kumar Sanu, KK adopted the style of Kishore Kumar. Both are the father of legendary singers in India.
Kishore sahab is great. But for me, Md. Rafi Sahab is the greatest of all. He didn't just sing the songs he sang every single word with such a delicacy which is unimaginable. Ehsaan tera hoga mujhpar Din dhal jae Tu mere samne hai Suhani rat dhal chuki And thousand other songs where he just touches a word and harmonises it. That kind of delicacy is impossible for anyone else.
Rafi sir has very good voice but I think the problem is his soft voice which doesn't suit many songs he sung could be better if other person sang those
With all due respect, I feel that a prominent singer telling others that another singer is far better than himself is the best compliment a singer can get. Yes, because Manna Dey once said that Mohd Rafi was far better a singer than he himself was. All said, Kishore Kumar's voice was a lot more manly than any other Indian singer. He had an in born talent which he displayed in his many songs. His singing capacity never was determined on the basis that he wasn't a trained singer. I think that's the best part of Kishore Kumar's voice & achievements.

I m a big fan of Mohd Rafi n Kishore Kumar both but u cannot judge any singer with one song. Imagine the song "Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe" in kishore kumar's voice. Just like Javed ji took kishore kumar's side I will take Rafi's side and say that the magic which Rafi saab had done in Likhe jo Khat Tujhe noone else cand do that. If u listen to a Kishore Kumar song, u can exactly visualize under what circumstances the actor is singing it in the movie. Feelings, emotions, mood, those subtle nuances very simply great in Kishore songs. These can neither b taught , nor inherited(his sons come no where near him). It is a gift given by God Kishore had that gift.
i feel when you listen to a song you listen to for the voice quality and melody. long after you have seen the movie after years if you think about the actor who did dramatic facial expressions every time when you listen to the song, the beauty of the song is lost. why should we think of any actor when we listen to a song.i think we should hear it just as a song without having the burden of thinking about the movie the story the drama the awkward expressions of those actors.

It’s a fact that Kishore Kumar’s voice is so special that your attention will be always on him whether the particular song is also some other’s (male or female) version or a duet. There are many examples : Mere naina saawan bhaado (Mehbooba), Zindegi ek safar (Andaaz), Bane chaahe dushman (Dostana), Na jaane kaise (Badalte Rishte), Ye dosti (Sholey), Hum ko tum se ho gaya hai pyar (Amar Akbar Anthony) … list is long, i can name at least 30 songs starting from 1950s, sung by both other male & female legends, solo or duet.
Why it is so ? What is so special in Kishore Da’s voice ? Voice clarity (whatever language he sings he sings with very clear pronunciation), exceptional BASS and softness, his exceptional quality to connect with the situation of the song - the mood of the song. Nobody has it. Even when Kishore Kumar talks it sounds like singing - it is so melodious and harmonic ! Unless one has those unique qualities nobody could monopolize playback singing for two decades - 1970 & 1980 belong to Kishore Da only.
Thank GOD that Kishore Kumar did not take formal training when he started singing; otherwise he would have ended up as an average singer and we would have never got a trend setter, a REAL LEGEND.

As a Muslim it is widely regarded he rendered Hindu devotional songs better than any other hindu male singers.
He sung in more Languages than any other male singer of his generation and that was eivident non-film albums also. Lets dig in further to Rafi’s sheer talent, Despite RD Burman having more Kishore songs, when it came to Qawwalis, RD went to Rafi mostly as Qawwalis wasn’t really Kishore’s cup of tea even though Kishore has sung a few Qawwali songs. Ironically with RD Burman, his fame came to the scene initially having Rafi singing most of his earlier songs with RD rise to the main spotlight from Teersi Manzil 1966 with all songs sung by Rafi which was a superhit musical, where was Kishore at the time, as he became a singer in films from 1948.
The film Muqaddar Ka Sikandar 1978, the hit song "Rote Hue Ate Hain Sab" sung well by Kishore but a sad version was required, but Kalyanji-Anandji wanted Rafi to sing a few lines to end the film but Rafi apparently suggested it was Kishore’s song so Kishore should sing the sad version but on Kalyanji-Anandji insistence they thought the in depth emotions of the sad version should be sung by Rafi only and he did just that in "Zindagi To Bewafa Hai"
The film Amar Deep 1979 Rajesh Khanna starrer all songs by Kishore but for the end scene of the film a few emotional lines was required by Rafi to render "Duniya Mein Sada". Why not Kishore ? after all songs were sung by Kishore in the film.
For the film Pyaasa 195, Rafi showed his amazing vocal modulation for singing the deep philosophical songs for Guru Dutt while singing for Comical playful Johnny Walker in the same film and you would think how could this be the same singer. This was widely noted by Bollywood artists for Rafi’s vocal range and modulation on different actors.
From the film Haathi Mere Saathi 1971, A Rajesh Khanna movie and of course all songs by Kishore but for the song "Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke", Kishore was unable to perform the song as to Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s expectations as this song required powerful high emotions to the story of the film and it was even proposed to leave this song out of the film but it was finally decided and further backed by LP, Rajesh Khanna etc. they needed this song so it was decided to bring Rafi in and he rendered the song so emotionally and powerfully as required was proved to be a big hit indeed. All the songs from the film Hum kisise Kum Naheen were fantastic superhit songs sung mainly by Kishore, Asha and Rafi. Both Kishore and Rafi was given 4 songs each by RD Burman. If you look carefully Kishore had all peppy songs while Rafi had a variation song styles from Romantic,happy, Qawwali and sad. As everyone should know the song “kya hua tera wada” became the overall superhit rage and won Rafi the Filmfare and National Award in 1978 ironically by a RD Burman song for which Kishore never achieved this winning combination from a RD number from all the RD/Kishore hits they had together. I could go on further forever if I wanted to but it will have no end. So one should think carefully before making crude statements against singers. At the end of the day I have the most respect for all singers especially from the old generation who were unique in their voices and styles

You are absolutely right. Even Kishorda and Rafisaheb both sung Zindagi ek Safar hai Suhana.....(Movie - Andaz) but people still remember Kishorda's version. Also Rote hue.... ( Muqdar ka Sikander) . People love Kishorda's version only. I agree with Javedsaheb.
RAFI SAHAB has not sung full song it is partial and duet also.
The main version as intended and composed for kishor only with incorporated yodelling by SJ. Only situational sad version was for RAFI SAHAB but RAFI sung it way way better than kishor version.
We cannot simply compare two songs of the same title sung in completely different situations and moods. Rafi saab's versions of the two quoted songs were sung completely different in accordance to the storyline scene. Rafi had a few lines and was not in a masti mood with Zindagi ek Safar hai Suhana compared to Kishore's happy fun loving storyline scene. With Muqdar ka Sikander Kishore's version is completely different altogether with Rafi's emotional sad version. If you watch the interview with Adnanji (one half of the music duo) he clearly states they wanted Rafi saab to sing those few emotional lines as nobody could do justice vocally to the sad ending of the film. Ask yourselves why not give Kishore those few sad lines after all he was the main singer of that title song. By giving Rafi just a few short lines in a film to end a very emotional ending states a lot !!! Same goes for Rajesh Khanna movie Amar Deep, all Kishore songs in the movie but Rafi saab was chosen to sing a few short lines to an emotional sad ending. Again in the Rajesh Khanna movie Haathi Mere Saathi, again all Kishore songs but Rafi was chosen to sing the very emotional song ' Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke ' which gave a very powerful emotional impact on that scene. I could go with an endless list of a examples but one must say with all due respect to Javed saab, whether he was scripted to say what he said or whatever but here I've clearly stated nothing but factual truths which just washes away this edge rubbish against Rafi saab and other singers. Its clearly known and was stated by Sonu Nigaam that there is this anti-Rafi lobby within the industry. Example - Why does RD Burman have the spotlight generally focused on him only ( that's not to say he a was not a superb talented music director ) but what about the other talented music directors who gave classic musical hits, have we forgotten them entirely ?? Why can't we just appreciate all artists with respect for their talents.

When we say a true GOD of singing then we need to back up our facts with what we are saying here !!! No doubt Kishore was a superb versatile singer but how many GOD based religious songs did Kishore cover compared to Mohd Rafi range of Hindu devotional & Muslim devotional & Christian devotional, not forgetting how many private religious albums did Kishore do comapred to Rafi ? Its a known fact Mohd Rafi covered more different styles of music than any other singer of his time !! He sung in more languages than Kishore, Rafi was the first artist to pioneer overseas live shows, Rafi sung numerous patrotic songs including singing for soldiers on the front line, there are known situations when singers like Kishore, Mukesh etc. were unable to fullfil the in-depth emotional requirements of a particular song and Rafi was called to render the song. One such example was from the film Haathi Mere Saathi 1971, A Rajesh Khanna movie and of course all songs by Kishore but for the song "Nafrat Ki Duniya Ko Chhod Ke", Kishore was unable to perform the song as to expectations as this song required powerful high emotions related to the story scene of the film and it was even proposed to leave this song out of the film but it was finally decided they needed this song so it was decided to bring Rafi in he rendered the song so emotionally and powerfully as required and this was proved to be a massive hit indeed. Another example Rafi was the master of Qawalis and even RD Burman who favoured Kishore went to Rafi for big time hit Qawalis. In fact Mohd Rafi rendered songs from Classical, Bhajans, Ghazals, Folk, Rock & Roll, Cabaret, Qawwalis, Devotional, Patriotic, Romantic, Comical, Happy, Sad, philosophical to Disco as well numerous private albums. It is evident to see well known individuals from the industry especially singers praising Mohd Rafi as the VOICE OF GOD !!! So for me, it is Rafi, Kishore, Asha and Lata, it is sequential, but it is so close that they are indistinguishable. Rafi's voice moves me and is Angelic, kishore is more manly, fun and energetic, Asha is playful and Lata is melodious. It is difficult to chose, but since Rafi's voice moves me emotionally and I identify with it, it is my number 1 choice. :-). Just personal preference not putting down anybody.
Lata is great but then so is Asha an incomparable singer. Lata, Asha, Rafi and Kishore are all brilliant singers who have ruled the recording studios of Mumbai. Their success is incomparable!

Most judges/singers/musicians don't call Mohammad Rafi No.1 ever green playback singer without having valid reasons. See the actor and hear the song of Mohammad Rafi, correctly matches to the act of the actor, the song sync with the pose of the actor. This is really hard thing to do. Kishore Kumar was definitely a great legend but he tended to focus more on the feel/music. . His approach was different but not necessarily syncing with the actors acting . But Mohammad Rafi is the Lord of melody and shall remain intact in his position forever. Let me clear again, if you hear Kishore Kumar's song, it feels same(without video or with video). But, when Mohammad Rafi sings, with video it feels totally synced to the performance of the actor, this is a really really really hard thing to do. Mohammad Rafi used to take 4-5 hours, testing, experimenting with his voice for a song. Let me clear you again, both are legends, both have some different things. With all due respect, I feel that a prominent singer telling others that another singer is far better than himself is the best compliment a singer can get. Yes, because Manna Dey once said that Mohd Rafi was far better a singer than he himself was. All said, Kishore Kumar's voice was a lot more manly than any other Indian singer. He had an in born talent which he displayed in his many songs. His singing capacity never was determined on the basis that he wasn't a trained singer. I m a big fan of Mohd Rafi n Kishore Kumar both but u cannot judge any singer with one song.
Imagine the song "Likhe Jo Khat Tujhe" in kishore kumar's voice.
Just like Javed ji took kishore kumar's side I will take Rafi's side and say that the magic which Rafi saab had done in Likhe jo Khat Tujhe noone else cand do that.
I m sure there may be same examples from kishore da's songs.
"Likhe jo khat tujhe" would have sounded better in Kishore voice.
Kishore voice has capability to give song extra edge.
Rafi aalaap can do better for music experts like "Tera Baap"

Too much aalaap is boring and sounding weeping.
That's why people in general avoid them if too much.

Music connoisseurs never avoid the greatest RAFI SAHAB in fact they lean towards him more. U cant ignore the GOD of music RAFI SAHAB but kishor certainly u can.

Not fair to compare to legends.. But as they have done that... I have answered it... Md Rafi has been the most complete singer World has ever seen (including female singers).... If u don't find Rafi's voice mesmerising... then that means you don't understand what he is producing with his voice... Those expressions....

Oh so Kishore was not a “complete” singer .. Those who feel this hv not even heard one single song of Kishore properly .. U know what a complete singer is ? Singing “Mere naina sawan bhado” and “De de pyaar de” at the same time , singing “Mere mehboob” and “Chil chil chillake” at the same time .. singing “Aapki ankhon mein kuch” and “Tohfa” at the same time .. Rafi saab could hv never done that .. No wonder Kishore was wayy ahead of him !
If it is voice only then it is Kishore Kumar, if it quality in rendition then it is Manna Dey, and if is both then it is Mohd. Rafi. Why compare among them. Would Javed Saab like if someone compares him with his contemporary writers and choses suitable instances to prove that he is inferior to someone else. It is not expected of a person of his stature.

Sahi kaha. You will not find such quality in any other singers.
lata and asha got a genuine female voice but the same is not true for rafi as male singer.in contrast kishore was blessed with genuine male voice.
I think it matters how much your voice is masculine think of kishore and rafi,s songs for amihtab, i consider it as advantage for kishore that he was not trained and that was the reason that he sang with feelings and from his heart rather than mechanical way like other singers.

Rafi training did not allowed him to try new things and go unconventional way. Naushad drag Rafi for not trying such things which give you popularity. If you see who is more popular Kishore name come first. Also Javed sir is saying that you will notice Kishore voice compared to any other singer. When it comes to training and alaap, it is choice of limited people not every people that why Kishore is more popular.
I am sorry....but u have mentioned it many times that Kishore Da could not sing songs like ...Ohh Duniya ke Rakhwale....I accept that...but let me ask u one question and i want and honest answer......Do u really think Mohd. Rafi Sahab could have sang this song...if he had not learned Classical music from a Ustad.....??? Now you will get the answer why Kishore Da did not sing such songs.....i have taken this piece from Wikepedia to help your answer....Mohd. Rafi learnt classical music from Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan, Pandit Jiwan Lal Mattoo and Firoze Nizami.....so if you think....singing classical music based songs....is the mark of superiority..then...with this parameters...Pandit Bhimsen Joshi...Pandit Jasraj, etc. are better singers...than Rafi Sahab...Even Manna Dey was not far behind...coz Manna Da was exceptionally good in classical singing....Listen to Bhai Bhanjana song and ketaki gulab song from Basant Bahar movie...and you will admire...Manna da...even more....with your own criteria....
