  • Impressions of a 7-day family boat trip on the Canal du Nivernais, with some comments.
Note that to indicate the route we followed, I selected the "bicycle" option in Google Maps, as the path follows the canal. There is no boat option for transport mode in Maps, namely.

Really enjoyed your video as we did Auxerre to Decize in early July in our shared boat and stopped in many of the same spots as you did.

Thank you, afterwards we thought that the reverse journey was probably better, but that was not possible.

Outstanding videography! I have spent 7 months cruising the canals of France and the UK, and the Nivernais remains my favorite. Loved how you used the map views, just like in the old movies. The first time on the Nivernais was a 4-week trip (solo) in 1987 on the western Burgundy loop and the second time was in 1990 for 5 weeks on the eastern loop. Things were not very crowded back then and the lockkeepers were pretty lax, so I was able to maintain my position in the lock without using lines, just using the throttle. I recognized a lot of the scenes you showed, but I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there. For one thing, it used to be cheap!

Thank you! 7 months on canals is a lot more than I ever did so I can't compare with other places apart from one. We went on a boat trip on the Lot a few years ago. Very beautiful landscapes but way more crowded. In that sense the Nièvre was more relaxing. The lockkeepers were very friendly and helpful, despite the heat.

Very nice and detailed video. Will be doing the Nivernais canal boating in mid-August. We will only be doing 3 nights / 4 days boating so probably it has to be one way. Any suggestions on where to start and in which direction we should go on this short trip?

Thank you so much! Tbh, I did not organise this trip myself, and it was in an area I don't know very well. I am probably not the best person to give travel advice about this : (

Awesome canal. Great video. You would have gone past our boat "Cheers". Due to Covid we have not been there for a while, but will be there soon.

It was very hot, indeed. Luckily the nights were relatively cool.
