  • Great little engine! Runs terrific. Planes a 13' Boston Whaler with 2 adults and a 2 yr old plus gear. Not fast, but it does the job. I'm currently using it as a spare motor.

Not planning on selling it, but with the right offer I might consider it. Yes, taking care of things sure helps! It also helped that manufacturers back then WANTED you to be able to take care of your machines so they kept them simple and showed you how to do the work in many cases.

Last year I pulled out my 69 Johnson 25hp and it started up on the 3rd pull after sitting in the basement for 20 years and runs great no problems

@lilriverdude76 Sounds like the carb is gummed up. Check for spark before you start messing with it, but normally the jets get clogged. You can order a rebuild kit fairly inexpensively, and the carbs on these units are really simple. Most likely there is gunk from ethanol plugging the tiny little holes on the jets. That will do it every time....

Often it's not entirely obvious when you first open up the carb. Sometimes you see massive amounts of gunk, especially if it's sat for a long time. But often its just a tiny piece of trash that gets in a jet and just won't budge. Of course if it has sat for an extra-ordinary length of time, the passageways in the carb could be corroded. Odds are if you get a kit and rebuild it (clean it thoroughly!) you will be just fine. Let me know how it turns out. Buying a service manual for these is wise 2.

man youtube is crazy... i have the same exact motor.
having some trouble starting it, but like you and many others have said, seems to be clogged/dirty carb jets.
