That back pack ring fits over his head.
The pump should have a plastic tube that connects the gun. Press the pump and the string (tongue) comes out.
I loved Major Matt Mason and this guy really added to the fun.

I loved my Major Matt Mason, which I bought with pocket money for 19/6 in the East Ham Market toy shop (nineteen shillings and sixpence for those who don't remember). Obsessed as I was with the U.S space program, this was a very exciting toy for me. As you describe, eventually the paint came off and the wire snapped and poked out, but he had a lot of adventures before that happened. The set I bought came with the flying "sled", backpack that allowed him to fly, and later on I bought the hard shell Moon suit that was available. It's great to see him again.

I must be a similar age to you - I had all the figures you show here, plus Matt Mason's NCO, Sergeant Storm, in the red spacesuit. Callisto was my favourite, though. I had an uncle in the British Merchant Navy, who had an uncanny knack of finding cool stuff on his trips - he regularly went to the USA. On one trip, he brought me some strange little toy cars, that ran faster than any I'd ever seen - some of the first Hot Wheels, in fact. He'd previously given me a 'Johnny 7' toy gun, and one Christmas, Matt Mason, his Unitrac vehicle, Sergeant Storm, and Callisto appeared. A year or so later, for my birthday, he sent me the Aurora 'Monster Scenes' kits, including Vampirella and the dodgily titled 'The Victim'. Never managed to get the guillotine kit, though. Like most 8-9 year old boys of the 1970's, I was fascinated by the gruesome stuff.
Great to see Callisto again. His odd accessories were meant to be sample gathering equipment, and were worked with a little purple set of bellows, and some PVC tube.
Sadly, my Matt Mason figures met a sad end. At my primary school, we had a 'Space Race' display, because of the Apollo 11 Moonlanding. I was asked if they could borrow my Matt Mason figures for the display. However, they, and several other space toys, belonging to other kids, were stolen and destroyed by a jealous boy and his older brother.
My dad went ballistic, and went round to the boys' house, and got their dad to pay up.
Ever since then, I have wished that Mattel would redo the range, but as proper jointed figures. I'm not holding my breath. 😆😆😆

I was watching "The Mind of Mr. Soames" one night, and he was given one of the MMM Moon vehicles as a present. I was just stunned with the realization that you guys got the toys over there!

I'll let you have this one Bro. I have fond memories of playing with both (and not so fond memories of the finger pricks), but I reckon Ma got them for you aged around 8 rather than me aged 4.
