You can feel the anguish underpinning the entire song, but I'm not going to lie, when the solo kicked in, I shed a couple tears. Whatever they went through must have been rough, but I'm glad they have such a love of music that they're still here today, despite everything that's happened to them. Another gorgeous piece by Mastodon, and another much satisfied listener, just saying thank you.
Best Brent Hinds' guitar solo ever. Fucking hell, the intensity of this solo can be compared to a whole fucking mountain crying after a fire took away the forest that has been on it for ages. Yeah that's a very specific comparison.
When this song first came out, I had just left an abusive relationship with a woman that sounds identical to her. She even tried to take the dog. This song helped me face my own emotions in a very needed way, and I can't thank you guys enough for this. Even writing this 2 years later, I still get a bit emotional when I watch it because everything about this song described how I felt at the time. I'm much better now if anyone is wondering, partially thanks to Mastodon. Love yinz! ❤️
I once had tinitus.. from playing too loud in my room.. but especially my body that said stop and rest. Switched off cellphone 2 months. Couldn't even hear the sound of dishwashing.. Then new Mastodon album came out. The Hunter blew me away. Every day I put the volume knob a little higher.. and they pulled me through it.. I kid you not. Real story. Suffered from tinitus real bad and I don't say it is just "between the ears".. but really wanted to listen to Mastodon and make the effort + they pulled me through in an emotional way I guess..
@@RastaMonk420 It was going to be a part of "Emperor Of Sand" - Brent was talking about a 'double album', and You can see titles of the songs off "Cold Dark Place" on a blackboard in "Making of Emperor Of Sand" documentary.

Lost my mum suddenly on the 7th of this month. Feel like this was written for me, and I mean that in the least selfish way it can be interpreted. Thank you for this fleeting catharsis. Slowly turning the tap of grief and this helps relieve the pressure.
I lost mine on the first of October. This song remembers me of that scene in the hospital, the exact moment when we were told she had died; that fucking feeling: "And I wish I knew how to breathe again/ I fear I'm gonna die inside my skin". It was also a sudden death. Stay strong, man.
Most of the songs that they have written were because of personal experiences that were devastating. That's why I believe personally that their music touches the lives of people who have lost someone close to them.
It very much sounds like country. Whoever dislikes it because it sounds like country is just a culturally bankrupt person though. Different tastes is fine but music is not as rigid as people who want it to fit in their little box would like. The mastodon guys play all sorts of different kinds of music. They’re inspirations range from heavy post metal titans neurosis to the greatest guitar player that ever lived Chet Atkins. This is a deep dark psychedelic country inspired croon that sounds different. It’s awesome and incredibly original. Which is what the naysayer here doesn’t like. It’s what most metal heads don’t like. Different. Rigid boxed in fools who just want everything to sound “heavy”. It’s no wonder bands like opeth bailed on the genre. THere’s no room for artistic expression.

This song makes me drift away to somewhere else in my mind. I imagine I'm a lone explorer on the high seas riding the swell of the waves into an approaching storm. Realizing there's one small chance left to change my course before hitting the storm and the abyss that waits within, I decide the world behind is already known and not a care of mine....at least the abyss holds something unknown.

Been jamming to Mastodon since I was a teenager and this song shows their work never ages. And plus this song help me cope with my emotional wound and thoughts of not wanting to live anymore. Keeping my emotions bottled deep down this song helps me feel heard.
I didn't like that song that much before, but now that my ex-girlfriend and I split up after 11 years I finally get it. Fuck, Brent suffered so hard to write this. Human beings wouldn't live past 20 if music didn't exist !
Thank You Brann, Brent, Bill and Troy for being amazing humans!! You make some of the most beautiful music. Not many bands can show such emotion in their songs. Never a bad song!!! Thank You🤘🤘
This song speaks to me, my woman left me for another man for unexplained reasons, and left me with nothing but vivid memories of what used to be and what could have been.
I just can't believe that it's been 3 years. This feels so fresh. What a fucking guitar work. What a fucking drumming. Song structure beats listeners like a mofo bastard cop. That badass outro riff and solo is next level man. So many feels. I love you Mastodon.

Anyone agree mastodon never disappointed?
i mean emperor of sand was a bit disappointing
Show Yourself was the worst song I've ever heard them write
Yes (ignore the first two comments, they are wholly inaccurate)
John Wayne agree. Although for me that chant in Aunt Lisa is pretty cringe worthy
I don't agree. They always disappoint me big time with their fucking live shows. They always sound bad. Great studio musicians though
