Brann Dailor says of this track; "This is another one I wrote back when I was in this one apartment of mine. I call it the Sadness Hole. I don’t want to get into why I was there, but just to be clear, I wasn’t strung out on drugs or anything like that. It was a personal time. But the last riff really sounded like the end of something. It’s sad-sounding, but there’s also some hope there. So we put some string arrangements on it and Brent did this really beautiful guitar solo. The last line is for Nick John (their longtime manager who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer a few years back): ‘The mountains we made in the distance will be with us forever.’ I think it’s a beautiful farewell".
I'm not being funny but Brent's gotta go down In history as one of the true greats on guitar, he just has that swagger to sing out loud on guitar and also with a signature style.
This is the one I keep repeating so far. It's like... probably one of the most bittersweet and uplifting heavy songs I've ever heard. It's alot of uncharted terrain for Mastodon. The only past song of theirs that this reminds me of is, oddly enough, Creature Lives, more so in the front half. The back half, however, sounded like a perfect marriage of Queens of the Stone Age and Alice in Chains. Shit, it even has vibes of Radiohead and U2. They somehow infused 90s alt rock goodness into this masterpiece. The 90s being a decade I clearly remember, having been born in the 80s. (1984) It's like all the grief, sadness, depression, anxiety and heavy-heartedness of the journey got to the end and there was a silver lining or a ray of light poked through the clouds. Then it all just kinda breaks open and the sun is there shining, as it always is...even when it's obscured by the storms and the clouds. Ugh. I hate writing stuff this heartfelt on the internet but this is as good a time as any. 🖤
Creature lives was absolutely one of those songs that gave me chills when i listened to it for the first 20 times. God just thinking about this album has me missing everyone that i love.
Very awesome description of this song! I know some of the old school Mastofans will long for the Death, sludge, metal days. But being a musician myself. I know that a natural progression of musical ability is inevitable. They definitely have created a masterpiece IMHO!

@@mattar666 I initially felt the same way, but the album is better than I thought. I think we just have to accept that nothing can top Cold Dark Place. It's easily in my top 5 pieces of music ever. There's some good stuff in this album, especially with Brents solos
@@lostinthesauce3473 i'll give this album another go for sure, but my first impression was the feeling of a pasteurized cold dark place to be easier to listen.
“My love, so strong” It’s such a simple line but it’s so powerful. The guitars are grieving in the only way they know how. Despite the drum’s tempo tapering off, each note kicks harder. As if I wasn’t crying already, the lyrics decide to make it so much worse. I can FEEL the emotion pouring out of every word. So direct, because there’s no other way you could say it. So powerful because it says all the things you wanted to. “I miss you” “It hurts that I’ll never see you again” “I wish I could tell you all of this again” “It hurts that I can’t” And then after everything’s been said, the guitar solo sings to you in a way that words could never. I don’t know how someone can make an instrument tear up, but the melody holds no punches as if you're the only one that can hear, the tune wells up with sorrow, and the guitar is barely keeping it together, but can’t afford leave things unfinished. This song is very special to me.
This song, from 3:30 on, gives me goosebumps all over, even made me tear up a little. This is one of the greatest Mastodon songs ever for me, and an absolutely outstanding way to close the album. What an incredible band.
Thats wild, I REALLY like the first half, just because of how beautiful, Zen, and uplifting it is. The second half just gets dark... But most of their music is that way. So I really value the first half personally
I find it funny that when you see them in like cooking videos, mini-videos like Brann and Bill presenting the vinyle or the four videos "promoting" this album, they look a bit too litteraly like clowns not taking things seriously. But you can tell they put all their heart, mind and soul in their music.
Those last verses are some of the best written by Mastodon. With Brann's voice getting better and better. The tone he brings in that part is masterpiece. And that ambience, that uplifting finish. That's gold to me. Makes me wanna keep listening to that outro for hours and hours repeatedly.
I started spontaneously singing Brann's "my love" verses at the end, then had to back it up and do that again two more times with extra attention and volume. So goddamn good... then Brent rolls in with a fucking Hendrix/Prince-level solo that is the most painful and beautiful thing I've ever heard.
The power and emotion prevalent in Hushed and Grim easily excels it to one of my all time favorite Mastodon albums. They made something so special, this branching tribute to band manager Nick John touches so many dark places but it shines brightly in others as well. Mastodon is a magical band.
What an album! Not a single ''bad'' song. And the second half of this song... Holy shit, one of the best chord-proggressions i've heard in a while. Absolutely beautiful.

I wish I could run forever
Not concerned if I am found
I wish I had all the answers
I wish I knew what went wrong
Whatever you say is too late
Speak it before you run
Waiting is just a mistake
I just need you to whisper
Tell me all is well
You deserve to be happy
Not stuck knee deep in hell
Whatever you say is too late
Speak it before you run
Waiting is just a mistake
It pains me to see you this way
To erase you is what I fear
You're swimming through my head
It keeps you near
But all we said was too late
Still, you intend to run
Chasing another mistake
It pains me to see you this way
To erase you is what I fear
You're swimming through my head
It keeps you near
My love, so strong
Washing the dirt away
As the snakes all go to their holes
My love, so strong
Bathing in turpentine
Until the flesh and bone come undone
My love, so strong
Deflecting the thoughts of strangers
To reach the other side
My love, so strong
The mountains we made in the distance
Those will stay with us
Thank you

Metal album of the year for sure
Love every song on this album, but they definitely saved the best for last with this one. Brann's vocals on the 2nd half of the song are incredible.
No coincidence that when I return to this song there are 222 k views.... Thank you, big guy
dAMN, this album is over now. Amazing musical journey. Was my first time through it.
Absolutely fucking in love with how the song goes back to More Than I Could Chew for the second half
This isn't a track..its a work of art!
"You deserve to be happy..."
A phenomenal album from an incredible band, and the emotion in that guitar solo is absolutely beautiful. Thank you Mastodon.
My new favorite Mastodon album.
The most precious thing about 2021, a shimmer of light and beauty in these strange times… and what a way to conclude this magnificent album, god i love this band! ♥️
The epic ending of a masterpiece! I’ve listened to this one like five times in a row, goosebumps every time! So good! Thanks guys!
