    After riding for the while my chain kept coming off. The sprocket screws may not have been tightened enough. I had to remove wheel and center the sprocket.
    I snug tightened the screws. Then I measured from the axle to the valleys between the teeth at 4 apposite positions. I tapped the sprocket with a rubber mallet until all sides equaled. Then I tightened the screws (tight) and checked again.
    Next I measured from the bike sprocket to the motor sprocket at 4 different location to make sure the sprockets where parallel. Problem solved, now the chain runs smooth.
    One way to tell if the sprocket is not centered…Pull in the clutch lever and roll the bike around. If the chain tightens and loosens there is a good chance the sprocket is not centered.
    Thanks very helpful video.

    Your videos help a lot. I’m doing my first build ( I have no bike repair experience and no motor mechanical experience) My clutch was sticking and the rear wheel wouldn’t turn, I was able to take the clutch cover off and loosen the flower nut a bit. The flower nut was on there really tight. After loosening the nut the action on the plates is a lot better and pressing the clutch in freed the wheel up, now my chain keeps coming off. I realized that I had measured the chain length with the tensioner on at its max height, after dropping the tensioner and re-measuring I realized I could’ve removed a couple more links to tighten it up. It still jumps off so I’m thinking something isn’t straight. It’s hell.

      Don't give up because I almost did. Two things: 1) Alignment issues refer to video. 2) Chain may be too lose and you may need to take out a link or two. Anyway I'm building my 33rd bike with 7 more for 40. It is a challenge and face many problems, but you learn by repetition. I build vintage bikes for example schwinn choppers, spiders, and 50's-60's bikes with the suspension spring in front of the handle bars. I tell potential buyers that my bikes are for collection, display, and investment,. But at the end of the day once they buy my bike they can use it how they want. For example my personal bike is a chrome Orange County Chopper that I store and use it on Sundays then clean it up and wax the chrome and store it. Good luck!

    Great video thank you. I must admit that I'm down to one of my last options for the chain that continues to come off despite numerous corrections and additional devices. It has to be the chain. Your video talks about an upgrade chain for the 415 chain that comes with the kit. I cannot find where its link in the description or stated in the video. I see Amazon has 415H,428H, 520,530 Motorcycle Bicycle Chains Replacement. Could you help me end my 3 months of suffering with a chain that comes off and let me know which chain is the the upgrade chain, and anything else you think may help me correct my chain problem. Thank you

    So on the chain tensioner I took two lead 9mm projectiles"bullets" and smashed them with a bench vise. I used them to fill the loose space top and bottom and then cranked down the tensioner bolts done this on three bikes and it works really well to prevent the tensioner from moving and jumping the chain

    I ran into a problem with my bottom chain alignment. It seems that when I tried to Keep the bottom chain tight and straight there's not enough room for the chain not to either hit the tire ( which causes the tire to start to shred as the chain passes over it at high speeds) or the frame on the other side. The other day I was riding the bike and notice that it was rubbing against the tire so we adjusted the alignment and it was too close to the frame at that point. I took it on a test ride and the chain popped. Do you think you'll be a good idea to remove that small piece of frame that's next to the chain and replace it with a U-shaped Frame? It's either that or I think I've got to get smaller tires. Thanks for all the help

    Hughe I always enjoy your how to videos you keep things simple so regular guys like me can understand I was checking out your getting the chain aligned but you didn't cover the problem I'm having please note my problem was created by who ever installed chain gear on motor I was getting a lot of chatter from inside the casing that covers front gear and when I did a inspection someone had used a impact driver or something similar the gear was tightened down so tight to the motor that it chewed off about a 1/8 of metal off the casing behind where the gear sets I cleaned it up and put it back together but it seems the gear now rides too close to the motor and no matter how I adjust my wheel allignment my chain is binding and being chewed up because theres not enough space between the casing and the chain any ideas on how to stop this from happening? I thought a small washer in between but cant seem to find one that gives me that correct gap for the chain to roll over the gear smoothly any ideas? and a warning to people that buy there motor on line check to see that things like this are tightened with proper tork my magneto was the same way someone reefed that baby so it was stuck right up to the motor has this ever hasppened to you?

    I just got a used motorized bike.. It came without the chain and he never had a chain tensioner on it. When I put the chain on the first time I had a chain tensioner lying around but I did not correctly install it. It was hard to peddle but I kept trying anyway and kept trying to start it. When it did start it broke the chain tensioner then the chain also broke off.. My question is, do I need a chain tensioner. I kind of need this bike to run right now and no not know a local store with one off hand nor do I have any money at the moment.. Can I temporarily ride around without a tensioner if I put the chain on at a good grip, not too loose not too tight?

    Your videos have been very helpful. Could you do one on break in time/period for the 80cc motor. Everyone says different mixture's and time frames/miles & speeds to break in the motor before using it at full throttle. I'm going to be using this to get back and forth to work for about 4-5 months until I can get another car.

    • @HughesMotorized
      @HughesMotorized  Před 5 lety +1

      40:1 oil gas from day one. Don't go full throttle / high RPMs for long periods. You can go a little fast at first. Start slow and slowly bring up the rpms a little at a time. You do want to get the rpms up after a mile or so and don't baby it for too long. That's my way. Be sure and check head studs after 4 cool down cycles. Run bike and warm it up, let cool down 4 times then make sure head bolts haven't come loose. just make sure they are all evenly tight. Not super tight but snug & even

    I bought a bike set up with a new engine and kit about 2 months ago . I went through 4 chains. The first I didn't try to fix I just got a new one and thought I wouldn't have any more problems..ha. the chain would jump off and break often . I was using a punch, a pair of needle nose vice grips and an Allen key because of the kink that would happen on the motor sprocket. Chain breaks ruined the whole thing, it broke the casing over the motor sprocket whatever that's called and once it busted spokes out of the rim. I'm done with that bike it obviously wasn't the right bike for an engine. I had every issue you addressed. Since I had never even seen a motorized bike before this one I had to learn the hard way on accounts and the engine loosened first without me realizing it so that is a major one but my main issue was aliighnment, the frame of my bike made the chain tensioner crooked so it was always at the very edge of being aligned no matter what. Thanks for the vid.

I shaved down the frame bar by the chain because I thought that might fix it, but it did not. It's a work in progress and I am going to try to redo my checklist and what is advised here that I missed, but I still could use a second opinion on this while I'm at it. I'm thinking the back wheel is too far out for the spoke for it to work in this situation.

    K, so my son bought a 4 stroke BBR kit. I am his father and visually impaired with cataracts. In sept/october I am hoping that new lenses will help me to once again see without glare. I have had a friend work on building the kit with my son and it has taken much longer than expected, the issues thus far have been from what I have heard. The coaster break is clicking, the engine sprocket does not seem to be aligned straight as if it is cocked to the left slightly. I am. Ot sure if the motor has been mounted incorrectly? Tho installed on a beach cruiser, they were considering cutting the two metal bars that look decorative to give the engine more clearance, as it is just barely fitting into the frame, ut I recommended against it as I noticed it is tack welded tonthe seat tube then goes onto where the tire mounts. I watched a video on how a coaster break goes together. I am about to take it apart and see if I can not fix the clicking, re grease it and at least get the bearing spinning freely. It is too tight. How to adjust the bearings I have. No idea at this point, but will look to see if the bearings are all in and facing the correct way. Next issue is the engine pushed as high as the frame will allow, the pedal just barely clears the transmission on the left side, this is with changing out the pedals arms with the ones included in the kit. Is there an extender kit out there? My son ran it about 3 blox and the motor seemed to slide dow ever so slightly, smacking the pedal i to the transmission as said above. The chain tensioner is maxed out. So do I leave the engine where it wants to be? Maybe get an extension for the pedals? Take more links out of the chain? Looks like a neat concept but the cheap bolts strip out easily, upgraded them.

    Hi, great suggestions here, I like your explanation of the thought process on this. I'm a newbie on my first build, and I'm having big-time chain alignment issues.
    One problem that seems obvious to me is that the rear chainstays don't run straight front to back, parallel with the centerline of the frame and tires. Instead, they sort of angle in from front to back - so when I mount my tensioner on that chainstay, the tensioner itself is at an angle, and of course this leads to an angle on the chain relative to the sprocket.
    The only fix I can think of is twisting the tensioner itself to counteract the angle, and I don't really have faith in my ability to pull that off. Anyway just wondering if you've seen this before and might have any suggestions. Thanks!

    What if the chain get lose and tight just from turning the front wheel

  • @adventureswithchristian6967

    I’ve built 4 of these silly bikes, and every time the problem is the chain. Always to loose then I take out a link and it suddenly doesn’t fit. I’ve been a welder/diesel mechanic for 35 years and bikes are not meant to have an engine on them. I guarantee 90% of these kits purchased end up in landfills because people just give up. Please make a vid showing how you get both chains perfectly on together during the first install. I’m sorry but it’s just luck when you get both the way they’re supposed to be. I’m seriously so upset at the moment after cutting the frame and mounting the engine mount plate perfect to cut the rear tire mount to where the adjustment slots are truly horizontal and with 2” of slide.

    • @HughesMotorized
      @HughesMotorized  Před 2 lety +1

      I've built 100s. The chain was the toughest part to master. Once I got that part down it got easier. I've built stretch ones, choppers, mini ones and trikes. You must get the engine solid. Zero movement or flex. The chain line must be perpendicular to the center of the bike. The sprocket must have minimal runout. You get those good and you will be tearing ass. If you don't, there will be snapped chains and frustration. Millions and millions of motorcycles run fine w chain drives. Just have to sort each one out. I've bought a few bikes cheap that others couldn't figure out. Don't give up. If I can figure it out, it can be done. Promise.
