  • We have seen the world of earthmoving take some huge steps over the past decade in the shape of machine control and various functions to aide an operator. An example is remote-control systems that allow a machine to be operated from a central location on the other side of the globe.
Many old hands say these forms of assistance ‘dumb down’ the skill of operating a piece of equipment. However, the lucky operators who get to use them disagree and that they not only get productivity benefits, but the financial gains are almost too much to ignore.
For anyone working in the earthmoving and mining sectors, the lack of fresh blood coming through is starting to leave companies looking for alternatives when it comes to recruitment. Many operators want to be home every night, don’t want to work weekends and even want to take holidays! Whilst many operations are capable of catering for these wishes, there are some tasks where continuous operations are required.
Awesome Earthmovers took a trip out to California to meet up with one of the pioneers and leading lights in construction equipment autonomy - Built Robotics.

What happens if the excavator breaks down? Does it have to wait for a human to come fix it? 🙄

Here in Brazil we have a few remoted controlled heavy equipment working on dangerous tailings dams and if a equipment breaks down they use mechanics attached with ropes to helicopter

That thing is is digging like shit. Whether it’s a bot or a guy doing it remotely, that looks awful and dangerous.

First of all it digs like shit, second all i want is to dig but nobody want to train me up so i call bull..it on it all, it cant beat a operator other than 24/7 operations

Sad to say this is the coming tech in the long straight trencher. Think of how this would be great for remote cross country gas mains. An open ROW. Think of how much time it takes to run a crew to the trencher. Then back at the end of shift. These are money lost to the powers to be. This won't replace a guy like you on an eye in the cab looking at that utility crossing the ditch. Remember that you have already put this off the farm tractor so the GPS turns the wheel of the tractor at the end of the crop row. My gosh the tech that a farmer has in a tractor or combine shows him everything.
There are auto run container movers in overseas ports NOW all run from a room. This was a big fight with UAW when that started putting this automation in assembly lines. Look at auto welders in production. It still has not replaced the welder on gas lines. So there will be a need for great old school operators when the digging is required.
