How to Load a Heavy E-Bike ~ This Simple Technique is the Game-Changer

- I have owned the KAC bike rack for fat tire bikes for almost 2 years now. I love this bike rack. This rack makes transporting my 2 Lectric XP e-bikes simple. In the course of owning this bike rack, I have developed a simple and easy technique to load my heavy e-bikes. My bikes weigh around 60 lbs each. My technique is so simple that most anyone can load their heavy bikes. Young, old, weak, it doesn't matter, this technique will work for anyone. The KAC bike rack and it's features help make this possible.

That looked easy, I'd like to see the loading of the second bike !!!
Thank you Steve. Good information and very well presented. Am 78 yo and new to biking and trying to figure out how to manage the bike rack with a 60 lb bike. Appreciate your video.
Glad I could offer some help. You could also remove the battery before lifting onto bike carrier and that would help as well.
This is so helpful. I used to have my son help me load my ebike on the rack. It is so easy with your technique. I can do it myself now. Thank you very much!!!
You are so welcome!
That’s helpful. My first e bike and I’m learning how i can do this by myself. Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful! Have fun on your e-bike.
Steve, you don't even need the rack at all, do this way:
1) fold the pedal; 2) fold the bike and keep the front wheel parallel to the rear wheel;
3)roll the bike on a dog ramp directly onto the trunk.
Keeping front wheel parallel to the rear wheel is very important, this way the folded pedal can freely rotate in the narrow space between the two wheels when the bike is being rolled on its rear wheel.
I did this with my Heybike Mars, so long the pedal on your bike can be folded, you can do this way.
Just checked youtube videos about Lectric XPs bike, the pedals on these bikes can be folded, so you can do this way, no need the heavy rack.
THANK YOU
Great review and recommended life hacks, Steve.
Thank you!
You've sold me on the tilt rack! Definitely speeding the extra bucks, thanks
Best rack I've ever used or seen someone else use. Most people I ride with are jealous when they see how mine works. m
I'm about to buy an ebike. I'd like to buy a fat tire bike but worried about loading a heavy bike by myself with a damaged shoulder. This looks like working smarter not harder. Thx for the video.
I promise with this bike rack or one like it, a little old lady who is not strong at all can load & unload an e-bike on this rack using my method.
You will love your e-bike
Thank you so much. I’m a woman and that is very helpful. Right now I don’t know why were having a problem with sliding the bar into the hitch mount. It’s been in there once before but it’s been a little while.
Maybe spray on some WD40 for some lube action. Glad to help you.
Quick mention ** hold the brakes for the tires that’s not moving when loading/unloading!
Thank you very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you SO MUCH!!
You're welcome!
Works on the Hollywood, too. I also have a video about this, but I like your tilt the rack method. Your video is much better than mine. Good job.
Nice truck
Very nice video. Thank you! I'm a 60 yr old woman with a fat tire ebike currently on a FedEx truck in-route to my house. I was wondering how I would ever get it loaded after a ride. Thanks again!!
Follow my directions exactly and no worries. You will only be lifting half the weight of the bike at any time of the process. Have fun!
Wow…. I didn’t think of thay
That was the easy one. Would like to see the bike between the post and the vehicle get loaded.
Absolutely no difference. Use same method for both bikes. Just load front tire first, it serves as a pivot point. When removing, take off back tire first.
What about loading the first bike in the front rack? Do you have and easy way to load that? Would like to see a video on loading two bikes.
Same exact process for 1 bike or 2. This rack makes it easy by being able to tilt it down. I might just make that video.
@@SteveSherron thanks, I tried your method today. Works great. Thanks again
What about the second bike?
Great job.....but do you have a video on loading two e-bikes? My wife and I just bought two e-bikes. Usually when I need her help I go find her and she's either on the phone, or busy with something...... And so I would like to know the best way I can load by myself.....I am strong, but do have health issues such as arthritis, and muscle issues.... Thanks
Loading 2 e-bikes would be the same exact way. What's great about this bike rack is the ability to tilt it down while loading and why I recommend this rack. Even if you need help, always load the front tire first. When taking off the bike rack, always unload the back tire first. Another tip would be to remove the battery also. That would make the bike lighter weight.
@@SteveSherronThe rack I have is almosr identical to yours but sits up a little higher. Also my two ebikes are a lot bigger than yours. They are more like mountain bike styles, Velotric Nomad 1's. They weigh about 73lbs each. In order to load two bikes the vertical bar would have to be laid down flat, and then raised up once the first bike is loaded. This is the tricky part, since it takes two hands to raise my vertical bar. You have to pull out a small red knob with one hand while raising the bar with the other hand. Mine also has a key that turns a locking latch. You have to unlock the latch with one hand and open it, while using your other hand to slide the hook onto the vertical bar. This would be very difficult since you would also have to be holding the bike at the same time, and while it is leaning in on you.
Where did you get the saddle
You don't put a heavy bike on the outer rack it has to go on the inner part as to bounce less. Once you get it on the rack you can lift the front tire into the slot and then lift the back into the back slot. I don't know if the bar will be in the way on this type of rack and if it can be pushed down horizontally so you can do it but you can do this with a Thule or Kuat which I have. And it's a good idea to pull the rear brake lever so the bike won't roll backwards as you lift it on to the rack before you move it to the back part.
What you say is correct but overkill for my purposes. The bar can be pushed down. My method is to show a weaker or older person how to load a heavy e-bike onto the carrier. After that, they can fiddle with it all they want.
@@SteveSherron It's safer to load something closer to the back than to have it sitting out where it will bounce that's all I'm saying. More information is better than a little.
I need this. My shoulder is messed up from the covid and flu shot
I hope you get better. This method will be very easy on your shoulder.
Thanks for the vid. How do you like that bike seat?
My Question is, will this work with a STEP-Throug Bike?
I am 78,and I have the same Bike (exept mine is a step throug) After folding it,having Problems getting it into the rear seat. of my Car...I'm a Girl :)
I wish I could answer your question. I think it would actually work. On the middle post you have that hook that slides down on top of the bike bar. That hook can slide all the way down until it clamps over the bar even on the step-thru bike. Thats why I think this rack would work for the step thru but can't be totally sure.
You can improve this technique by locking the rear brake and popping a wheelie - then pivot the bike (still in a wheelie state) onto the rack. When unloading, also lock that rear tire when it is grounded and pivot the bike’s front wheel of the rack using the wheelie technique. Cheers!
I agree with you but Grandma probably isn't going to pop a wheelie, lol
Can you show us how to put back one on too?
No difference. Exact same way.
Can you remove the wheel bases off the rack
Yes
I would like to know where you got your sear!
Right here. amzn.to/458soFJ
If you use only one bike on the Carrier do you keep it toward the outside or the side toward the car?
Honestly, I have found it doesn't matter. However, I tend to use the outer one because it's just easier to load and unload.
I also just got the step thru. The specs on this rack says 60 lbs and step thru is 70 lbs. Would it be safe for a 70 lb bike?
No problem. I carry 2 bikes usually on this rack.
sho us how you load 2 bikes
That's a good idea for a new video. I might just do that.
Would this work for a Hyper-scorpion ebike that weighs 100 lbs?
I would say yes. I carry both my e-bikes on the rack all the time and combined they easily weigh 125+ lbs.
@@SteveSherron i just was told it doesn’t work like that and its per bike and it would be too much weight. My bike weighs 90 lbs without battery. I have to use the one made for motorcycles but they don’t thave an arm support so they make me nervous
My 67 year old mom has one of these and it’s literally going to kill her trying to get it on and off her car. My stepdad was so excited to get one of these bikes and got one about a month before he suddenly passed away. I think my mom sees it as a connection to him in some way, but I’m seriously concerned for her and I wish this stupid bike would fall off the rack the next time she tries to take it somewhere. I’m sure I’m yelling into the void but if anyone knows of any kind of winch or lift technique to load/offload these things please point me in that direction.
The way I showed you in the video, a person not very strong can put it on and take it off the rack because at any time you are only lifting half the weight of the bike. I don't know of an easier way.
@@SteveSherron I figured out after watching through that she wasn’t tilting the stand down, it was in the horizontal locked-in position. I sent her your video and am hoping that’ll help in the meantime. I’m thinking of spending the money on a hydraulic/electric lift for her just to make sure she’s not always straining herself and so I know she’s not going to overdo it. She’s had rotator cuff problems for my whole life and while I admire her tenacity in go-go-going, I don’t want her to cause herself more physical damage if she insists on keeping the bike. Thanks for the demo video and the response 💚
Does KAC make a trike rack?
Not sure. I think Lectric might make one. Check their site.
