    I like the mechanic for Wyvern Fire locking you into a certain heat level a bit lower than you're at for couple minutes, so you wanna thrust hard and vigorously often to build yourself up, and right when you're about to go over the edge, finish with an explosive climax that leaves you in a glow for 2 minutes.

      I think it's not so much "easier" as it is far more smooth and intuitive. Small mechanical changes give you far more options, and the way you can move allows you to be far more mobile and aggressive if done well.
      I'd say the biggest buff is the ability to move while consuming items, as it allows you to dodge attacks you wouldn't be able to in GU. I like GU quite a bit, and coming from 2 weeks of playing world, I really didn't find it all too difficult. Playing it did make me better at world though, as you can learn the basics of most weapons, though not having a tutorial makes it hard to do so sometimes. Armor skills, and negative armor skills, are of course different, but this is more a micromanagement change, as you can beat both games naked if you are good enough.
      Having played both up to end game, I don't think one is easier than the other. I do like MHW combat far more though, I wish it had the styles though.
      I think MHW is simply more accessible than older games in the franchise, and the changes are mostly QoL. It was a tiny bit harder to get into MHGU, but I haven't had major trouble in either really.

    • @VVabsa
      @VVabsa Před 3 lety +7

      @@AveSicarius That's mostly the overall QoL World has. GL works pretty different in world compared in GU due to the heating mechanic and the addition of wyrmstake attacks. In Rise they tweaked GL once more, giving it more shelling QoL than MHW.

    Really interesting little Valor Gunlance move that I discovered completely on accident; in Valor state, after blocking an attack with the quick reload(without any block recoil), pressing X+A will quickly trigger an advancing thrust whose direction can be slightly influenced. I only discovered this very recently, so I probably don't understand its mechanics completely, but being able to do an advancing attack that can directly lead to rapid-fire shelling immediately after performing a block that passively reloads shells is unequivocally amazing.
    EDIT: Showing how little I know of the applications of this move, I have found that you don't need to actually block an attack to do the advancing thrust. You just can, making it a very safe option to go for if you're not sure what the monster's up to.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 Před 6 lety +14

      There's a lot going against it on paper, but I think partially because of that and the complexity of the weapon and all the shittalk going around about it, a lot of people aren't really giving it a fair shot to begin with. I get it doesn't have great time attack times, but I think most people don't play at that level in solo play anyway, let alone in multiplayer. I really believe the weapon holds up fine in general play. And on that note, yes, the weapon can really blast people around and that's annoying, but I swear you can practice this and leave your teammates on their feet if you're just a bit careful and smart, without hampering your own play in the process.

    • @yoswirawan

      @@yoswirawan I've read about that and I can't deny it. I haven't tried it at G-rank (I don't have the Japanese version), but the numbers are pretty clear. It's certainly one of the weapon's problems. Still, I think that's more relevant in time attacks than anything. Yeah, you can't very easily just spam shelling attacks and get results, but functionally, I think the weapon still works well, especially with Valor style.

    • @yoswirawan
      @yoswirawan Před 6 lety +2

      yeah my reply is for Green Terell that said gunlance is his quicker weapons, I think he haven't tried it on G-rank and yea gunlances shouldn't have a problem in high rank where the damage is still good, I never said that the weapon isn't viable in any way though it is still very much usable, It just wouldn't be your fastest monster clearing weapon that's all (maybe 15 minutes instead of 10 kind of thing)

    The fifth consecutive shot is 2.6x damage, did I hear that right? Oh my. So with Load Up... How much is a 6th shot?
    Also, I didn't realize you could still perform a normal full reload from Valor Stance. That's kinda nice.
    The new art sounds neat for monsters that love to fly overhead (Rathalos, I'm coming for you with a vengeance) or are simply tall.
    I think Striker and Aerial are still good styles for general use - I was never any good with Adept - but Valor style, as I see it, is just the best for anything except maybe Wide type Gunlance. I'll have to find that out. I'm already having a blast with it in the demo (pun intended), and looking forward to getting to use this with various Armour skills and other arts.
    Valor is just so amazing for Gunlance. It fixes almost every issue I have with the weapon's flow by being able to quickly and efficiently transition from one move to another, and from offense to defense, where this can be a bit stiff with other styles. Entering Valor Mode is incredibly swift and the guard point and Valor stance do a ton to allow you to stay on the offensive. I will happily return to primary-maining Gunlance with this game.

    @oak3684 Před 6 lety +1

    I totally love the Gunlance in 4/4G, but it got EVEN BETTER in XX/GU with the combination of the new styles.
    I started off with the Aerial due to how easy you can pull off the Full Burst. Later on I switched to Valor instead as it's even easier to do the Full Burst, plus the access to stronger and faster shelling attacks. You can do some serious damage (while looking awesome af) with Valor Mode + Wyvern's Breath.
    Anyway, I personally recommend for beginners to give the Aerial Style a go first, then move on to Valor.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 Před 6 lety

      Aerial does a good few things to help Gunlance's mobility and flow compared to ol' Guild style. It is very tailor-made for Normal type, though. Whenever I wanted to use a Wide type in Generations, I'd use Striker and I liked that a lot.

    • @oak3684
      @oak3684 Před 6 lety +2

      Yes, what makes the Aerial style really good is also its mobility, especially when you got the Evade Distance skill on. I used to have to train myself to move around backwards with the big leap back in 4G, so it's a huge improvement being able to leap forward in XX.
      The Nakarkos Gunlance is such a beast of a normal shelling type, which is why I can't stop using the Aerial/Valor Style XD. However, when I use the wide shelling type, I would use the Striker as well. Going back to basic (well, beyond basic) but getting all the sweet arts in return.

    • @laggalot1012
      @laggalot1012 Před 6 lety +1

      @@oak3684 What Striker lacks in extra mobility that other styles offer, it makes up for with the arts. Absolute Evasion and Absolute Readiness are both obvious godsends for the weapon, and the weapon's own arts are also really good. And beyond that, I simply enjoy having the triple poke and that you can quick reload into further pokes, so Striker is awesome for long strings of poke/shell combos

    • @oak3684
      @oak3684 Před 6 lety

      Yeah, a lot of people make good use of the Absolute Evasion and Readiness skills to increase the mobility (I remember Gaijin Hunter's video on using the Striker Style with the Evasion and Readiness skills and it was absolutely mind-blowing - thought I think that's for a Lance and not a Gunlance, but it does apply in any case). I really got into Striker with said evasive skills for a long while.
      However, I REALLY wanted to use other attacking skills because they looks so fancy and cool XD. So I make a defensive built with +2 guards and such instead, so I can fill the arts slots with all the cool attacks.

I love the weapon, but there's no question it's one of the most complicated melee weapons in the game between all its various attacks, combo flows, the heat gauge, shelling types and the styles also changing the behavior of the weapon fairly substantially. Good luck to this friend of yours.

    • @mrmental1569
      @mrmental1569 Před 4 lety +1

      Because if the gunlance goes up to 5 shots, its a normal type gunlance, if it goes up to 3 shots, its a long type gunlance, and if it goes up to 2 shots, its a wide type gunlance, he explains each type of gunlance after he explained guild style

    @gaijin hunter So I was looking at the damage values screen for shelling that you put up during the tutorial and realizing something strange. Based on my calculations, when you include base damage and fire damage of shelling, Lvl 4 Normal Shot full burst does roughly (including the 10% bonus damage) 126.5 damage total, while Lvl 4 Long Shot full burst does roughly 124 damage total. I was confused by this cause I’ve always been under the impression that Normal Type full burst does way more damage than other types full burst, but I’m not confident in that anymore 😅. Any input on this?

    I've always used the sword-axe and since I started mhg a few days ago, I began to use the glaive with aerial style, but I'm a huge fan of dragons and I think the best way to be one is with Rathalos armor and gunlance, but never used it and I don't really understand how to dodge (due to my use of aerial glaive)
    Then should I use the adept style and replace dodging with blocking and using full burst?
    (Only played 3 mh games, and one of them is stories xd)

      Wait, it does? That's cool if so. Gonna have to try that out in the demo. Though, granted, it's really slow, so probably still not very safe if you don't have the monster immobilized first, but just maybe it'll open up additional opportunities on occasion.

      Laggalot101 the guard stays surprisingly long. Also if it wouldn’t guard, you probably wouldn’t get the attack out at all, so I‘d say it’s a fair trade of.
      Don’t see the guard as something you want to aim for but rather as a nice bonus ;)
      Also, the animation always had your shield in front of your character, so I think it’s more then logical that it blocks attacks to 🤔

  • @sup3760

    Does the heat gauge increase the damage of shelling or just the regular attacks? And also I saw that the hunter art wyvern’s breath gives 10raw+10fire to all your shelling attacks, did this ever change in mhgu? If not then wouldn’t that make the hunter art significantly worse in g rank than in the lower ranks?

  • @Paperfiasco
    @Paperfiasco Před 6 lety +3

    As GL main...I was not fond of what they did to it here back during the early days of Generations. Going back to it now after World (to practice for Gen Ult), only made that feeling worse. I was never able to grasp the timing on Adept anything and Valor looks like a lot of work, or at least a lot to have to remember for a weapon that was already given a gauge management nerf. I'm still going to use it as I always have, but I'll likely stick to Guild and Aerial.
    The changes they gave GL for World are one of the few things I legitimately had no issues with in regards to that entry, it just felt so much better than it ever has; ESPECIALLY for shelling.

      Rimos Abysswalker I did, and I can understand where the love is coming from- but it’s just not for me. I get better results with guild and aerial with how I tend to play. However, I can see how it can work for a lot of other players. I don’t know what it is, maybe I just don’t like keeping track of so many gauges, whatever it is- like how I am with Adept, Valor just isn’t for me. It’s nowhere near as much fun for me as it is in World.

      A bit late, but Shot Lv determines how much damage a specific gunlance's shelling & Wyvern Fire deals. Since these are both fixed damage and only scale with dedicated skills, every gunlance has a Shot Lv to match its relative weapon damage.
