    Every visitor knows to visit the Edinburgh Castle, walk the Royal Mile, eat haggis, climb Arthur's Seat, and go whisky tasting. But there are sights off the main tourist trail that are so worth your time. One of these underrated but incredibly scenic spots is Dean Village

    I lived in the Dean Village from 1984 till 2019 when I decided that I would prefer to exchange my one bedroom flat for a terraced house with garden quite a bit further out. Also handy to have a few shops nearby instead of having to walk half a mile or up a steep hill to the nearest shop and back again just because you had run out of milk. These consideration become more important in your 60s than in your 30s. The mineral well is open to the public at various times during the year and the statue of the lady is Hygieia, Greek goddess of cleanliness and hygiene which is ironic since it is not allowed to drink from the mineral well because the water is now unhygienic. Most of the modern development you saw took place during my time there. Where I live now has riverside walks leading from one end of the city to the other, often a lot wilder than the one you walked down and also easy access to the Union Canal which provides separate routes for walks so that is a consolation.
    It was a lovely place to live, at least until the tourist season extended to all year round and because it does look like a Disney creation, visitors, especially in large groups, forget that people actually live there. I enjoyed reliving the feeling of being there through your video. Thank you for that.

      Russ, thank you so much for your info. Indeed the place looks like Harry Potter movie set and will attract loads of tourists. I admit, before reading your text maybe I was loud as well and didn't realised people live there . Maybe because of the excitement to see that impressive place. Next time I have to take that in consideration:)
      All the best and happy easter mu friend

      @@LADmob I didn't have you in mind when I spoke about tourists. I found your manner to be respectful and considerate of all the people you met. My objections were about the large groups with a leader calling out the details and the group forgetting that numbers amplify the volume. I enjoyed meeting individual visitors and tried to be helpful when I could and I would gladly welcome you back if I still lived there.

    • @Russ_Keith
      @Russ_Keith Před 2 lety +6

      @@OaktownGirl Yep, that's just how it appears. It's a very sought after place to live. Growing up in Edinburgh I always felt that it was a magical place and I couldn't believe my luck when I managed to buy a flat there. It's kept looking that way on the outside because of its historical and architectural significance. Even if some of the windows are double glazed they still have to look the same on the outside. But inside the flats are as modern as anywhere else. Many of them are bought to let and some of them are even air B&Bs.

    Yes, Dean Village is a magical place. Had you kept walking a couple more minutes at the end, you would arrive at the village of Stockbridge, which has great independent shops and places to eat. And If you walked a couple more minutes along the water beyond that you would arrive at the fabulous Stockbridge Colonies on Glenogle Road. Walk that road for a few minutes to the bridge at Canonmills, turn left and a couple minutes from that is the Royal Botanical Gardens. At any point you can turn and walk up the hill the the city centre. The great thing is that everything is so close.
    By the way, all those white buildings in Dean Village are relatively new. For hundreds of years this area contained grain mills and liquor distilleries. By the 1960s much of it was derelict. Where those white residences now stand was a hill with a couple old stone buildings. That was all cleared away and the area regenerated. There is, however, at the top of that hill and as part of this building area, a couple old mews -streets with small homes and stables - that are also wonderful.
    Thank you for this video. When in Edinburgh I walk this area a lot, and it is always a thrill.

    Although I've known about Dean Village for a long time, I never had the time to visit on previous trips to Edinburgh. Next time, I must go and see for myself. Thank you for alerting me to this hidden gem. It seems like a world heritage site. Great video; so clear and good cinematography.

  • @yurborisovichpinhasik8039

    I like all these wild stone buildings. Natural landscapes together with old houses look wonderful! I wish i could visit this place now. Thank you very much for your excursion!

    I've been to Edinburgh a million times, but never took the time for a long walkabout. Dean village looks great and what a good job you made of the video. I only live along the road in Glasgow so I should really take the time to explore more of the capital. Thanks for the relaxed tour 👍

    Dean Village is unique . The fact that it is in the centre of Edinburgh , walking distance from Princes Street, makes it a very special and peaceful place to visit, you forget you are in the city.
    Thanks for the video. Very pleased you enjoyed Edinburgh.
