  • While the York Rail chase wasn't a success nor a failure, we did catch this guy working around the corner. Quite a treat to see the old engine working the steel industry.
    ESPN 1701 is an ex Pennsylvania Railroad, Conrail, and Quaboag Transport EMD GP9. Many of these engines met the scrapper's torch, but this one was a lucky survivor.

    Love the sound of that 567 prime mover with the roots blower spooling up . Reminds me of watching the Western Pacific Geeps switching and kicking cars when I was a kid in the late 1960s ❤️🤩

      As a normally aspirated engine goes, the 567a-b-c didn't have a roots blower (turbo).
      Those were added for more horsepower during the GP-20 era.
      However, the sound you're hearing IS the awesome traction motors and the main generator whining right under the cab and behind the cab wall respectively.
      It's great! 😄👍

    Love seeing classic EMD's still on the rails putting in work. Even more rare is seeing an old GP that is still set up to operate long hood forward.

    Awesome to see these old units still going strong. The high hood 9’s are just a classic.

    Very nice. Purely mechanical so even 60+ years on from when it was built, they can keep it in operating condition and it still does it job perfectly.

    Grew up watching GP7s and an occasional GP9 working the NC State Port and other businesses in North Carolina. Love the souond of that locomotive; good to see it in use.

    In my years of railroading, I never operated a GP 9. SD 9, I ran, but when I started in 98, most of these unit's were gone..

      Let's not forget the old f-units and some gp7's as well as 9's that were unmuffled and so loud you wouldn't hear a roots blower, just pure deafening 567 roar.
      Roots blower sound or not, they're all great sounds.

      It does, it runs on an as needed basis for East Penn. Out of the dozen times I've passed by it, this was the only time I caught it moving by pure luck.

    This GP9 has been modified. GP9s came with EMD 567C with 2 Roots blowers,This unit has a EMD 645 Turbo engine as you see the single exhaust and the distinctive EMD turbo sound.

    • @jml8975
      @jml8975 Před 4 lety +1

      It has dual exhaust . At 7:25 you can see it.

      @spookerz35 Před 2 lety

      Sounds like a 567 roots blown engine to me. I can easily see 2 exhaust ports...the one closest to the cab blows a lot more smoke than the other one.

    • @CrossbuckProductions
      @CrossbuckProductions  Před 2 lety +2

      1701 is most definitely not turbocharged, and is still equipped with its EMD 567.

      Actually I go by this train quite a lot and it seems to always be in the same spot. I don’t know if it’s even used anymore. Apparently it was built in 1957! For a 66 year old train this thing looks great
