  • VULX 2779, a former Conrail U23B still earns its keep at Vulcan Materials in Savage, Maryland. 2779 was built in November of 1974 as Lehigh Valley's 503.
LV 503 started life working as a road engine in eastern PA hauling everything from coal to groceries. The U23Bs were a staple of American locomotives, being used for mainline service until their successors, the B23-7s came along. Still, although far and few between, U23Bs can still be seen working on shortlines or for industries.
As of December 28, 2022, this locomotive has been taken out of service due to multiple cracks in the engine block. The engine’s block heater lost power as a result of a winter storm, and consequently froze the engine which caused it to crack. The engine is currently awaiting its disposition as of January 3, 2023.

There were a couple of those switching, hawling ash, and sometimes lignite for an electric company in Texas. It certainly looks like a remote the switchman is carrying but there aren't any status indicator lights on the locomotive. It doesn't have to have status lights but it certainly helps to know it has the correct direction before throttling up.

    - (Google translate) Hello, I think that many of these machines that once meant the success of a Company should later have a special place as a thank you in some visible space, so that anyone who asks why that machine is there can tell them why it earned that place and that recognition, thank you, nice video.

The Dash-7s are the next generation of GE locomotives. The bigges visual difference is that the Dash-7s were the first with the "wing" style radiators, whereas the U-boats have the slightly wider, slightly taller radiator section without wings.

Sad to see the engine died. Hopefully they can replace it??
Great video showing the strength of that old engine.

Just a question but didn't that work at Shelly materials in Kent Ohio about 15 years ago or maybe even 25-30.
Because I remember it being replaced by a GP11 and in 2009 that was replaced by a SD18M that was replaced by a SD40-2 last year.
Don't know where the GP11 went but the SD18M went to horizon rail in Fairport harbor Ohio.
If you are ever in the area you should go take a look I have some really nice engines and they are all displayed outside and kept in okay condition.
They are waiting to be at least out to shortline railroads that need power
