RURAL Thailand is making me CRAZY! But it’s not just me…
I spend the night with a traditional rural thai family in the village eating mukatah on the ground, I ride a Tak Tak tractor around the farm and investigate the mental health issues that affect life in a rural thai village. I struggle to find medication in the local Thai pharmacies and become quite desperate at one stage. I discuss mental health whilst living in such a remote part of thailand and touch on my new partnership with BetterHelp. UPDATE:
I've now left the village and made it to Phnom Penh for my visa renewal trip. The outpouring of love from viewers has been monumental. Donations across the past week amounted to over $1000aud. I am feeling so humbled. Lele is staggered. The contributions from you generous souls will fund the completion of the ceiling on the new farm house and fund 5 new beds and other furniture.
As for the DOG, I've left cash with the most reliable auntie. She can be seen in the footage working out in the field. She's the one most capable of providing care now for the dog. She runs a corn farm down the road, has her own income and will spend the money on the dog and not elsewhere. He's a Soi dog and will not let anyone touch him or put him in a car. Painkillers and a course of anti-biotics will have to suffice for now. At the time of writing this he's walking effectively on 3 legs and ceased whimpering, and UPDATE: has some mobility back in his 4th leg.

I think another way to look at it is, Thailand don't have these medications because they are not living the western life which we are finding out more day by day is a very unnatural and unhealthy way to live. Doesn't mean to say depression doesn't exist in Thailand, but they are living the way humans are meant to live. Closer to the land, more family and community orientated life. Love your channel, this is the universe working and opening a door to another view of this crazy world

Did you miss the part where he talked about rampant meth and heroin addiction and endemic alcoholism. When I lived in rural Thailand for 2 months I could count on one hand the men who WEREN'T drunks. Life is tough and without help people cope with substance abuse. That happens in rural Thailand everybit as much as it does in appelachian America.
I feel like a lot of people romanticise the whole East v West thing and project on to it the way they'd like to see it as opposed to how it actually is.
I'm originally from Scotland but have been living and working in SE Asia for 32 years. I absolutely love living in this part of the world and the amazing food and more often than not, lovely people. But I'm realistic to how things actually are.
@@willsmith39 I would argue a lot of the behaviours and addition was brought to Thailand from the West..I am so fortunate to have been brought up outside of my passports nationality and I’ve seen a lot of these places before tourism hit. Of course these drugs and addictions exist everywhere but on the whole Thailand is a very good place to live and thrive 🙏
@@PixiePeachPomme The data suggests that the drug trade in Thailand is largely operated by Easterners - especially the Chinese via the special economic zone "Golden Triangle" bordering Thailand, Myanmar, China and Laos. I don't think it's accurate to describe that as "brought by the West" - although there is also some Hell's Angels in Thailand

I am living in rural Isaan and have enjoyed the tranquility but before retirement I dealt with the city rat race for over 47 years. I am more “anti-social” now and simply enjoy working in my tropical garden and relaxing on my porch looking at the fish pond and sea of rice fields. If I want to see farangs, I go to the province capital to a “Western bar/ cafe” catering to foreigners. (20 minutes away)
The snakes around here are rat snakes ( big) but they are not venomous and slither away when you walk near them. Gnats and flies are a pest so you sit outside next to a fan. The red ants are my pain in the arse, for their small bites on me can turn into an infection and I have to take an antibiotic. Another aggravation are the locals’ nightly ritual of burning garbage,plastic bags, leaves.. whatever to the “smoke gods”. They have to burn something after 5:30 pm. ( Composting is not practiced here.) Yes, most villages have a free weekly garbage pickup crew.
Your comment about medicine is partly incorrect . There is specific medication available at the government hospitals which are found in the capital province cities. The rural villagers I know don’t hesitate going to their closest district medical clinic for a back ache or the flu. The 3-4 kinds of tablets they usually receive must be inexpensive ( subsidized by the government).
The sad part about some Isaan locals are the men ruining their life expectancy with daily shots of rice whiskey ( Lao Khao) and smoking. Some male teenagers and young Isaan men get stuck on yaba which sucks them into a dark tunnel. My bias opinion is that there is no future for teenage girls in these villages and there seems to be a high rate of young pregnancies. Many times the young father isn’t held responsible for financially helping the girl he impregnated. ( Of course the grandmother usually becomes the caretaker.) The woman’s “Me Too” movement or “just say no to sex” hasn’t hit this region… and don’t expect the community monks to talk to the congregation about alcoholism, child or wife abuse, taking illegal drugs, or the 10 precepts (dasa-sīla) of Buddha’s teachings.
The local public education is mostly outdated with rote memorization and no updated curriculum; thus, many students are not prepared to compete for jobs demanding 21st century skills. 😢

Well said for the most part.. It depends where in Isaan because there are definitely differences between families, but the big issues do likely stem from cultural thoughts and traditions - as I understand there is some pressure for early marriage but so often it ends in single mothers which are then ultimately responsible for ensuring family/parents, and even grandparents after their now ex husband failed to be the provider and resorted to alcohol/drug abuse, escaped elsewhere, or got involved in something sordid to make ends meet before getting caught... Honestly I think the comment about monks is really where it lies as the usual governance for the local area, but maybe it doesnt help to bring in finances calling out issues...

Stayed a week with my girlfriend of 5 years in nakon nowhere, never ever going back there again, the rampant alcoholism, ignoring health problems and money fixation (although i understand having not nearly enough is an enormous problem) are unbearable. I've come to terms with the fact that I'm a spoiled city boy. Great video as always!

Man, I live in a village close to Mukdahan (2hrs north of Ubon) and had a similar experience. I love living here with my wife but sometimes it’s very difficult and isolating. In May during the heatwave I had a nervous breakdown and thought I was dying. I went to hospital in Bangkok and got a full body scan. Blood work, cat scans, the works. Verdict, I am a totally healthy person with severe anxiety. I was prescribed Xanax and ambien. I would prefer a more holistic remedy but I am committed to staying here in Issan while I wait for my wife’s immigration approval to the states, so for now I’ll take the pills. Glad you ended up finding your required medicine mate. I've personally never found it an issue in Isaan but even in my village life I was only 30 mins away from a province capital city with everything. In regards to the bugs 😅 sounds like you need to toughen up a little Sammy 😂, looks absolutely beautiful there regardless, better than Pattaya in my eyes ❤
I love Isaan. Also, I am on 4 medications, and compared to Australia , medications are very expensive in Thailand.

Sam I understand your anxiety not finding depression meds. It’s not just the lack of meds that’s the problem, it’s the side effects from missing a dose that’s the problem I get. Hope your doing better now buddy cos your not alone on your fight with anxiety and depression 🙏🙏🏴
For sure its hard. You can do it. Adapt and overcome. The benefit is the kids will learn from you and you will learn from them.

My wife's family village is about 2 and and half hours from Ubon and we are currently here from Oz. I am finding it more difficult than ever even being based here for short periods. Exactly what you said: another world, insects, heat, language barrier and also no one cares about their health with so many dying way before their time because of massive substance abuse. Going to a temple will not save lives, medication will but they don't care and as you say it is unavailable. My wife would be dead now if she did not live in Australia and I was vigilent and insistent with regular check ups for her, and she is just a bit bolder than you. It is like going back 100 years in time. If I had a sudden major problem health wise whilst in Isaan, I would be a gonner.

Hey Sam, My girl is also from isaan, and she also wants to go and live there together in the future. I cant live there, exactly the same reasons you mention. Its beautiful but also a different world.
My Lady is from Sisaket and i can not wait to go visit. The family have business in Bangkok but go every month to Sisaket to check their houses over there.

I started taking meds in 1995 for anti-depression, anti-anxiety, acid reflux, blood pressure, sleep and in 2014 two meds for Alzheimer’s. January 2022, I changed my diet to Keto (meat, vegetables and blueberries) began eating one very big meal a day over 4 hours and fasted 20 hours. I also started walking 8 miles every other day. October 2022, I had lost 50 lbs, got off all medications and had the best blood test results ever. Two and a half years later I still live this lifestyle

@@GoneAdrift I’m convinced the health crisis in the United States is mostly (85%) the result of the food we eat and 15% from not exercising. Who knows what is in store for me after 60 years of a very poor diet but hopefully making these changes will allow my body and brain to heal. I wish you the best. I’ve traveled to Thailand 30 times since 2005. My last trip was in 2019 but after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, I’ve been responsible for her care. I expect I will be back in2025 and look forward to checking out Issan.

I live in a village about 1.5 h from Khon Kaen. We built a house over many years and its super comfortable. False ceilings keep the dust and the bugs out. What i am trying to say is its doable but it needs to be on your terms and what is acceptable and comfortable to you. Also have lived on and off in Thailand for 30 years so am well aquainted with the culture.
I remember your vid about the reason you left AU, basically leave your problems behind you, only to go to Thailand and find yourself engulfed in other issues. Take a step back if you're dealing with too much and let Lele handle some things. She's a smart girl, she can handle it.

i remember trying to find lexapro in chiang mai. had to go to the major chemists to overpay for it. gladly been off it 3 years now. therapy will be lifelong though.
Also, have you tried getting a butt load of mosquito netting and filling the roof gaps with it? keeps the bugs and sneks from getting in while maintaining heat ventilation? just a thought. keep at it buddy and if you wanna do a boat day with friends, give us a bell.

I just returned from a 1 week trip with my girlfriend from Isaan, Kranuan. I can understand everything 100%. I am certainly in a privileged situation, for the entire stay I rented accommodation in a 4 star hotel in Khon Kaen, 60 km away, and commuted back and forth every day. So a stay in Isaan is bearable even for a Falang. However, once is enough.
Khon Kaen is very liveable for farangs

I live in udon Thani a few months every year I have a house there and my wife and son live there.
The rest of the time I work in Australia.
I lived in issan for about 14 years and I'm only 49.
I also can only speak to my wife and son but that's ok for me.
Im also only 15kms from the city so about 3 times a week I go in to town and drink with my farang mates if I couldn't do this I wouldn't stay there.
Issan is great but it's not for everyone.
I first went to Issan in 2005 and I could'nt stay more than two weeks. I think the good things were; beautiful with mountains and a cool river, the people were chilled out and friendly, it was cheap, it was interesting for a while seeing how different it was. The things that were hard for me were; back then they did'nt even have bottled water in the village! They drank out of earns of water collected and I always got terrible shits! I did'nt enjoy the food it was way too spicy, the heat was intense with very little wind, not one person other than my wife spoke any English, in the wooden house we slept on the floor with fans and mosquito nets, the cocks crowing would wake you up from about 4:00 am onwards, there was a speaker system that gave out news to the village from about 7:00 am when the cocks had stopped crowing and I was dozing, basically I found it incredible boring... but now we have a condo at the beach I still think we will build a bungalow in the village. It will have to be done nicely and with aircon and I want to put in an outside gym with a jacuzzi to make it comfortable and have something to do. For myself I could not live there full time but if its comfortable it makes sense to have somewhere to escape to sometimes. We don't actually live in Thailand as we work in UK now. Interesting to here your thoughts on Issan.
Agreed on all points.....Det Udom right? I love Isaan but it is tough, but partly thats why! Until only a few years ago I hoped I would have chance to try Isaan life..... I hope you have chance to see the local music... I mentioned/donated a small on the live stream recently - music is great therapy, but I understand Isaan music is not for everyone.... Phin and khaen, morlum music - very unique..... I agree with the Thais on depression medication though - once hooked on western medication its hard to ween off it - better not to have in the 1st place, but to have just good experiences - usually depression in the west is caused by a mixture of stress finances, bad social connections, etc.... I went through things myself long ago, although moving to Aus, luck, being literally at rock bottom, and 1 year of specific life choices made all the difference... My ex wife here did meds for worse and almost broke me... Would love to have a deeper chat about it when back in Jomtien next month, and check out the water pistol haul from songkran! Hey Sam I hope you have a photo of your meds with the full name to show when your trying to get them, I've been fighting the depression anxiety crap for the last 4 years and Im 63, my Thai wife, just did not understand it until she had a look at good old Google! it might sound crazy to you but maybe that country Thai life with the slower pace might help?? a lot less things to stress about except for the bugs and snakes lol. Never give up mate, tomorrow is a new day 🙏

A trip to isaan is a trip back in time persoanly i think it refreshing i love the country life out there nothing better then getting up and making a hot milo and coffee mocha in the morning and just taking it all in ad the sun rises. However i was lucky enough to find a girl who already had a house its your traditional thai house but its nice i put in tiled floors and a full bathroom with a sitting toilet and standing shower but they already had the rest tv full bed rooms with beds off the floor and thick mattress's so its not too far off my own place in aus so im happy there plus her family doesnt drink so it actually a very blissful experience the bugs and mosquito arnt too hard to manover arround so no issues there for me for anyone thats wants to know we are about 30 to 40 minuts away from surin city and about an hour away from the cambodia markets

I had an adderall script for 7 years......superman pills. The pharmacy in usa would run out. I was pissed the goat was controlling my addiction. I quit 3 years ago...miss the "push" don't miss the need. Many addictions to go!
interesting video, I hear you with the city thing, I would suggest it would be a special type of person that can come from metro Sydney,and live in a field an hour from nowhere, Having lived in Thailand for a long time, it has never been on my bucket list, It is hard work and a hard life, and I think is where the biggest difference in dating a Thai person with roots to that area would be hard, culturally we will never be farming Thai people,
Certainly interesting about depression, anxiety and alike, I think you are probably correct, regarding the medication by other means, however I wonder whether the life of a guy /girl from that rural area probably worry about basic survival in a far different way to a Aussie... not diminishing a persons mental health at all but I would say they a kid in a rural village or a teenager in a rural village or a parental figure working in a field to make 5000 baht a month, has far bigger issues that a woman from New York ..
There are many first world issues, valid as they are, which don't get much airtime in Thailand, I remember a flight with a thai girl on Jetstar and we talked about ticket prices and carbon offsets, climate change, superannuation...things that were in the news... literally nothing was a thing for the average Thai, Western mentality vs ingrained Thai way of life... just remember we choose to live here.
I really hope you you find a sustainable way to make money, No idea what CZcams or patreon revenue is but If you can get a legal work permit, reach out, Adam has one right, surely there is a path to do it, as if you are really reliant on subscribers to fund your continued stay, then another plan is perhaps worth looking at, You do you Sam, and this is in no way a sledge at all, quite the opposite, you have taken on responsibility for a range of things in a relationship, effectively 3 kids and a rural family to help, these things will require money and time, just offering assistance and advice from living here 13 years. Without a solid financial foundation you are always going to be on shaky ground.

In future if you're outside Bangkok and need pills just head to the nearest hospital pharmacy. That worked for me when we moved from Phuket to Nakon Sakhon and I needed xanax
Hey dude...this vid brings back memories of my trips to Sakon Nakhon and Kalisin. I grew up poor in Belize and can adjust to the life in Issan easily, but you are right, the language is the issue. I can deal with the flies, mosquitos, but no way will I put up with snakes and other creep crawlers. The outhouse bathroom is dangerous...as something may crawl up and mess with your "boys"....55555.

I have to get my head meds from the hospital or a psychiatrist clinic, sometimes i have to order it from my old doctor in Phuket.. same same I do my boarder runs to Phnom Penh and I stay there for a week or more 😂

Mental health in asia. No. Not have. Serious. I learned that about 25yrs ago. I think emotions are very depressed in asia. I from austrlia. I live in asia 23yrs. I am a sober alcoholic. Yep mental health in asia no. Long term rehab with monks was a common solution. Ps. I use meds daily.

Firstly, Thanks for making such helpful content. As an Aussie who lives in Thailand for at least one Month a Year Due to being Married to a Thai National, your channels are a Big help. Prior to my arrival, I knew what was going on. So mad Props for that.
Soz about the Depression, But If your going through hell Keep going.
I realize that it's hard, but the sad truth is that not speaking Thai is about 90% of the problem. Being Ferang with a Thai Lady, you should make a massive effort to be More Thai and add that to your channel because by teaching others, you learn more yourself.
Like when Speaking Thai I find myself always asking about what specific words mean and how I can use that particular particular word
With Meds Try Multivitamins and exercise as a substitute. (Speak To Keis about Fruiting body it may help) It worked for me when I cant get anything for ADHD in Udon,
Learn from your mistakes. For example, I order it online, like my wife does for me, so when I travel, it's already waiting for me by the time I get there. But Nothing beats being able to face your demons and slay them without the help of any Medications, so maybe work on that.
If have have any problems then you talk to Donk and then he tells everybody else and then you dont have any more problems "Thats what Mick Tells Me"

i has live 14 year my house in isaan and have lot better life than europe has ewer, good house own hand build and europe style all rooms and bathroom, not same than you video have, were worst place you go live ??? my wife house has better than this video have. im not farmer and newer go to rice field and grow any plant i not need, wife plant if want , up to she, no my job, i live lot lot comfortable good life isaan than north europe ewer can live, lot more better food, house,many hobby,healt care, weather all have better, newer not can and not want live pattaya agaian or bangkoko not newer want live, own house at countryside and near big city have best life ewer can be. all can take at city what need normal life, only my hobby parts not have big city many need order bangkok or other place, woodworking hobby tools, metal working tools, RC-plane build parts, elektric/automation parts sensors etc need orden internet, not big problems 1 week and post mail come parts. try 14 year learn Thai language but newer not can speak or undrstand anythink. newermind all what i need can speak all peoples and wife understand good, not need thai speak can live good. if possiple newer not move off at countryside isaan house life. its perfect time my life retiree in thailand many new hobby and lot own little project and can go make day trip whit my car or motorbike around country many village or city near, max 400km/day drive trip i make. old men not want drive more motorbike /day, big bike honda 500cc rebell. i have air-con ewery bedroom but not need use only summertime can sleep better hot season, normal need use only fan not need more.
thailand is for cheap rent and maybe cheap rather cheap women, after that their is no benefit even via cost. if you want cheap rent= thailand, nice weather= thailand. but you can get weather other places.
thai's are not charming, women of the nigh are no jems, and cheap rent isnt enough sometimes.
