We head to the salvage auctions to check out a McLaren 600LT that was hardly damaged; but even if it sells for a reasonable price will this supercar be worth it???

What do you think is a better deal, the Hummer H2, the Police Suburban with the questionable stain, or a FREE Download of Rush Royale: clik.cc/Samcrac_RR (Use the promo code Y95I-4LDN-73I4 and get a master chest with gold, a set of cards, and magic dust)
I'd have the suburban... Interceptor engine, probably other enhancements from it being a police vehicle.. The H2 is nothing more than a Tahoe with a lift, and a body kit.. in a word: "Trash"
Mercedes was a 560SEC, nothing particularly special in that spec. If it was an AMG it would be much rarer
I'd take the Thuderbird
For me I'd have the Mercedes and the Thunderbird.
The police car is the one for me, Sam
Sam, I think you’re making the right decision. I enjoy seeing the non-super “value” cars just as much if not more. Do what makes sense! Thanks for everything.
I agree. I like to watch the rebuild and repair. I might even like it more being normal cars because I can learn and apply more of it myself!
Exactly. The HyperCar era of Samcrac left me skipping the videos… the stepmom jokes were the only thing bringing me back.
Sam doing the lords work, bring these prices back down to realistic values, tired of looking at these scrap of metal selling for the price of a new similar spec car.
CZcamsrs seem to think it’s all about the supercar builds but in the channels I watch we just want good content. As long as it’s interesting even the smallest of budget builds can be amazing.
Same! I enjoy Budget Buildz for that reason. Or Junkyard Digs/Mook.
The reason CZcamsrs do super cars is because that's what gets clicks CZcams can be a great way to make a living but unfortunately you have to treat it like a job so you have to focus on what type of car makes money
Salvage auction prices started going up few years back when IAA and Copart became available to overseas bidders but in the last 2-3 years prices and auction fees are ridiculously high. Nowadays you can get better deals on FB market place.
the overseas buyers are the issue for U.S. buyers - folks buy these, fix them with less overhead, sell them without the title limitations we have here
This!!!
@@jtrentha Agreed, its simple-halt all over seas sales on Copart and IAA. Gotta put ourselves first, simple as.
Yup, FB Marketplace is where it's at - kinda like Craigslist in the old days. Any platform that encourages bidding is kinda a disaster.
20% discount is not nearly enough. First, it will have a salvaged/rebuilt title. Secondly, there are always surprises. Those surprises come out of the discount. No thanks!
30%+
Yeah, but it's a McLaren.
He's a good mechanic, and everything wrong, how he fixes it will be documented here on his videos. I'd buy a vehicle with a rebuilt title from him.
Unfortunately your asking for a dream, these auctions have people go over these cars to come up with the maximum value they think they can get before it goes up for auction, combined that with people bidding that don't realize that McLaren parts are extremely hard to get used, an McLaren doesn't even want to sell you new parts unless your having them do the repair, an that leads to people over paying for the car an pushing out any bidder that crunched real world practical numbers. Just look at tavaris an what he went thru to rebuild his 675LT, which seems like he only did that build because McLaren taunted him saying he'd never be able to get that car rebuilt himself an yea he proved them wrong but it wasn't cheap by any means an only made since because he got a lot of content out of it.
After youtubers like yourself started becoming popular and boosted COPART through the roof they got out of control with fees but on top of it there are so many schmucks with bucks who drive prices to the moon on cars that use to be under 500 all day. So I blame you guys for us small guys not making good money anymore.
You could. Or you can blame the source, places like COPART and others, who decide to get greedy with their fees because of the extra attention.
New copart fee structure =big corporate squeezing out little guy!
Or the fact average price of a new car is over $40k
This makes people hold on to what they have. That hurts used car supply.
As soon as supply vs demand gets out of balance up go prices.
Covid = Popularity of CZcamsrs = prices for vehicles started skyrocketing
There are probably a litany of reasons that copart restructured their fees, but it smells like the big buyers who part out cars complained about the competition from little buyers. copart like any good company is beholden to the customers who pay the bills. Guys like Samcrac don't.
I agree with you Sam that it makes more sense to buy a good one. Say you do buy salvage, fix it perfectly and go to sell it. Go to Car Max and with a retail of $225k, with a salvage title, the most you'll get is 60%, so expect to get an offer of $135k. Nope.
I think the Mercedes wagon would be great Sam. Just seeing it get a full detail would be satisfying!!! You wouldn't need to spend thousands either!
Flavour of the month, an e-swap into the Merc would be a pretty cool restomod.
Those old diesel Mercs are million mile cars. Get it and try to top Tavarish's millionmile Lexus...
@@grandtheftautotune7715 Literally built like a tank!! The fuel delivery system on those would get dirty and make them run rough. A simple clean and rebuild of the unit and it runs like a clock. If that is a problem with it.
That 300 TD wagon is super cool. It looks really good, and the interior is nice.
That body is actually coming up in value too.
@@jeffduncan02 its really expensive in europe
I wouldn’t waste my time on the police vehicle nor the hummer. I probably would go for the Mercedes wagon or the SEC model. Love your shows!
as long as its a 560 or 500SEC.
Yeah, I'm going to side with you--those prices just aren't worth the time and effort to refurb.
That 300TD is a gem and it looks like it would fix up perfectly!
I completely agree with you. You never know what hidden damage there is and how much money you have to spend you didn't fact in. You have to pre-glow the old Diesel Merc. Cool car, for sure!!
I had an 85 300d in San Diego. Sometimes, I'd get in a hurry and crank it without waiting. They start fairly easy that way in warm climate. In a really cold climate, you may have to run the glow plugs several times before it starts.
If it's warm outside u don't really need to pre glow it
I would go for the 59 thunderbird, if the problem is the engine it may be an easy fix and flip.
Listing says vandalism. Title seems to indicate a theft recovery.
There is literally no mechanical issue that could possibly be on that car that couldn't be repaired and still come out ahead overall. Even if the entire engine was grenaded it would still be worth fixing.
@@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg yeah even put an EV in it or RestoMod!
@@Dr.TJ_Eckleburg Yeah if it was matching numbers then it would be a pity if the engine can't be recovered but it looks too good to pass up unless other have the same idea.
@@g60force EV? Yeah nah, shitty idea. The car was never meant for EV components and you would lose that V8 rumble along with the respect of the classic car community.
I like the way you think about the math of these cars. BTW: of all the cars you showed I would take the wagon.
...that wagon is by far the coolest car shown...
For real. I love everything about it, it looks really nice and I love that it is a wagon.
Hey @Samcrac, the O’meara on the Ford Thunderbird was actually the O’meara Ford dealership that sold it. I only know this because I went to high school with the dealership owner’s grandson. They are a wonderful and kind family. So cool to see a car that old still sporting their insignia. Keep up the awesome content, love your channel!!
The thunderbird is def the car I would get from all the ones you showed. You where talking about an LS swap but I would rather do a Coyote Swap since it's still a Ford car 🙌🙏
The Coyote is a very wide engine and wouldn't fit that engine bay without a lot of modification.
Thanks for keeping it real Sam. Love the fact that you are down to earth and not trying to overspend in this crazy market. Would love to see cars like Honda CR-V or similar on your channel but love your content. Keep up your great work.
You don’t have to do the big money cars man. Just find some interesting mid level cars that you don’t see everyday. Just as fun to watch
Like, say, the Plymouth! lol
Sorry for the downtime guys, stuff has been crazy; now if I can just get a few cheap carbon ceramic rotors I can show you my new project 👀
thanks for taking the time to explain. your vids are always informative. seems like some of these exotics would make sense for someone who already has parts or parts cars lying around. good luck finding rotors.
Pls do
Stop being cheap
They are only $3k each used
So u bought the mclaren
Shame about the auction fees. Doing a restore on something that is economically marginal or non-viable is of no interest to me unless the vehicle is of very low value.
So true, rebuilding cars was a good entry for people before but now it's so much harder because of the fees. We just want cool cars for cheap haha
Hi Sam, loving your videos. I think the Thunderbird is the one to go for. Fixing it won't cost as much as the more exotic stuff and that car really deserves to be brought back to working order and enjoyed.
That Merc wagon would be an amazing project car.
Odd it's even in there ?
Hi Sam, of course you can always provide a service where you go to the salvage yard, take videos pictures of many vehicles and charge a fee for this service and also buy the car for a buyer (the buyer sends you the money to buy for them so you meet the 25 cars a year discount), this helps he beginners out so they save on the fees. You just charge 1%. You buy it and ship to them under your account. The buyer sends you the funds of course so you don't get stuck with a vehicle.
Do the 300SD wagon! That is completely different to watch!
20% discount for the rebuilt car - but it's got a salvage title. 30% hit there.
That’s what I was going to say. Even if you could buy and fix the car for $170k all in you’d know have a salvage title would take a huge hit in the resale price. Sam should call that out in his analysis. It’s comparing apples and oranges.
It has been that way here in Australia for 10 years already. Not worth it. We watch with our jaws dropped at what you guys can buy (even still, despite it getting harder for you). Here, it's always been extremely high fees, very short supply and extremely high competition. Might as well just take up knitting.
I think the cars in Australia that are written off go on the WOVR (written off vehicle register) and can never be registered for on road use again. The only ones that can be registered again are called repairable write offs, usually written off as not economical to repair.
Personally, I prefer looking at people working on more ordinary cars. Maybe not all the way down to fiesta
Lost my Father in December, your time is sooooo valuable!!!! I would rather buy a car today, pay %20 more, be able to use my time to ride around in it with my Dad!!!!
Well said
If you really look into the Thunderbird, it is a Colorado car that was sold through O'Meara Ford in Denver.
So it's originalish? Still a really cool car.
Thought it might be a dealer
Hey Sam! Long time no post, thought you were in jail with Alex Palmeri again 😄
Totally agree. The profit margin/savings on a supercar is very tricky, since costs will add up quickly for expensive parts.
A normal car has better parts support and more affordable options to keep a larger profit margin/savings.
That T-bird was nice. The "Omara" badge was from the car dealership that sold the car originally. Back in the 50s, 60s, and 70s they used actual badges instead of stickers like they do now.
woohoo! Saturday night Samcrac new video!
The 300TD is a good car. 115K, it hasn't been broken in yet.(the transmission is probably blown up.)
I'd agree, is cool though.
you're a good content creator because you empathize with the viewer. whatever theme you navigate, you'll have eyes on ya.
He asked how much the rotors cost, not how heavy they are 😂
Before 2020, I just rebuilt 3 cars thank to you. I still own them all. Even then budget was tight with this new FEES a salvage car is OUT OF THE QUESTION. I suppose that the rebuilders and COpart work together to retake the market!
Please don’t wait so long between videos. Your channel is still my favorite.
Thank you! I apologize about the wait
@@Samcrac thought you had died
@@Samcrac I thought you were on the lamb, hiding from Rich.
You guys are fun together. Whatever you buy. It’s fun. I was never interested in supercars. It’s the repair itself.
Love to see you salvage that Ferrari engine tho.
I couldn't care less about super expensive cars. I prefer to see cars more attainable fixed up.
Thanks for the video Sam. Love the Mercedes. Both of them. Forget these strange super cars.
There's only one car I'd want and that's the THUNDERBIRD
You could become a pirate and salvage the car carrier Felicity Ace near Portugal’s Azores Islands. Just have to hope some of those cars only suffered from smoke damage and not terminal meltdown!
Lithium batteries self-combusting again?
Man I am so happy for a new video. Keep up the great work!!!
You can’t get anything cheap off CoPart or Iaa anymore. If it’s not people paying crazy money in the states, there’s bidders from Europe, Middle East and Africa. It’s crazy.
Yep. Every single car running thru live auctions were being bid on from Saudi Arabia, Georgia, Mexico. Etc.
Lovin' that wagon 👌 for the coupe you need to decode the vin. It has Early spec headlights, no airbag but newer style seats. Maybe someone swapped in newer seats or it was a gray market vehicle that had the headlights swapped 🤷♂️
3 weeks and finally an auction video! Thanks Sam!
Thunderbird all day. I can't believe you didn't recognize it immediately. You can get a new engine for less than the brakes on the McClaren, way less. Doesn't make sense to do a swap since the Thunderbird is worth more with the original engine. Heck you could part it out for more than you'd pay for it.
That dealer badging put him off. Not unusual for dealers to tack on a few after market parts and put their own badge on back in the day.
The prices have definitely gone insane with the value of cars and for a lot of them started not making sense good advice and review in this Sam
If it weren’t the foundation for my channel, I’d never pay what I pay for these cars. I find if you buy too cheap, the fees are a ton higher. If you find cars around the $5-10k mark you’ll get a somewhat decent deal. Sadly due to higher auction prices it’s getting less and less sensible to buy these cars. Even I am looking at moving to other sites.
Every state in the country has their own government auctions. Family-run auctions are often even better. Estate sales, for that matter, could be hiding hidden automotive gems. I'd start there and avoid the salvage sites entirely.
you just record cars on copart and talk shit
I agree with Randy, it doesn't make sense to buy anything since it's all over-inflated by 60-80%, then copart smacks you in the mouth with fee's that frankly are outrageous as they are gouging people too.
I just keep buying older used clean title cars for $2k out the door, fix em, and sell or keep for family. I can afford waiting out the stupid game called copart and iaai right now.
Let us not also forget the seller is getting smacked with fees as well - it's almost like letting them acquire so many competitors over the years was a bad idea and now we are all getting f*** for it.
You don’t rebuild cars, none of y’all in Oklahoma
Thank you for making this video!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 your 100% right about this! The work around is go to your local high end body shop and let them know what your looking for. The next time they get a total in of that car they will call you and you do the buy back so you get the car with a clean title and you they the owner and body shop a small fee on top of the buy back price. The down side is you can’t run volume this way, it takes a wile to get the car, buy backs are usually fairly high but your getting a clean title and you can get the body shops input on the car before you pull the trigger.
Really good content Sam! You make some really good points and I agree that the fees are outrageous!
If one rotor is damaged, you need to replace the other side too.
Y
that Mercedes Wagon turbo diesel sounds like a small semi-truck 😂 nice!
You're spot on Sam. Thanks for always providing great content.
That 300TD wagon is phenomenal
Sam, you sound sick or recovering. I hope stepmom brought you some soup and ginger ale
Long haul covid
I use to rebuild cars but the prices are to high for me to make a profit. It use to be easy to make money on rebuild a car. For some reason I haven't been able to sale rebuilt cars as easy as in the past. Rebuilt title cars are hard to get a loan. Most people only want to give half price of a clean title car.
In the insurance business I hear 65% being used when approximating the value of a salvage versus a non salvage . Might not be true for Super cars.
@@ducknorris233 I've hear the same.
@@morbidangel9872 never read of that.
@@morbidangel9872 salvage vehicles have there title marked as such but are allowed on the road here in Texas. One issue is some insurance companies shy away from insuring them especially when it comes to “full coverage”. Insurance generally charge the same for salvage and non-salvage but in a total loss will pay less for a salvage vehicle and customers might cry foul on that.
Sam, it's great to see some new content from you. Your channel is the first one in my favorites that I check to see if you've posted anything new. Personally, though, I was a little disappointed that you didn't recognize the T-Bird right away (I'll admit I thought it was a '60, not a '59). Keep the awesome content coming! Get that thunderbird!
The 20% price difference isn't worth it, especially considering it will be a salvage title, so it has lower value.
Yes 100%, people often forget that a salvage title reduces the cars value significantly and makes it much harder to sell.
@@slasher9883 and man do salvage title cars SIT lmfao.

1959 Thunderbird, has a 352 Ford FE engine, still lots of FE blocks around, performance parts available. Would be fun build, 390 or 428. Lucky it doesn't have the larger optional MEL V8, parts are scarcer.
When the engine was noted as damaged, why did you start it without checking the oil levels and then running it for some time? I really appreciate your videos.
I think it indicated 'mechanical' damage, not engine damage specifically. If the engine was toast, starting it did not hurt anything.
That makes perfect sense. I enjoy watching the ‘normal’ rebuilds a lot more than any supercar, cars we can own, not cars that will ever be within the normal persons reach.
Clear explanation Sam! Loooooove the two Mercs! Buy that one!
Totally agree on the financing vs fixing and possible resale value
A branded title makes the car worth a lot less than 20% lower. Definitely not worth buying that salvage McLaren.
The issue is everyone starting CZcams channels to buy these cars and fix them like you v-tuned and everyone else.. so then they start to think well why aren't we getting any cash out of this let's raise the fees... And change the structure
Also you have a "prior salvage title" which often makes the vehicle harder to sell, and also devalues it.
Presumably there's a supply and demand thing - in the old times perhaps they cared more about shifting their cars. It occurs to me that you could get a group of you guys together and then for a fee (obviously!) group together to become a "high volume buyer" you'd need some strict contracts to make sure you didn't end up lumped with a car but presumably there's nothing ilegal about buying a car and then selling it to someone else straight away...
All good Bro and I hope you’re feeling 💯 Btw, that’s a 560 SEC…very nice! Have fun and stay safe while you’re doing these projects 👍🏽

I’d buy that old Benz instead of the 600LT. They probably tried to make it look like the AMG Hammer. You should buy it and make it a Hammer tribute car
To be honest, I don't care what car that you are working on. I'm here for the problem-solving and the process. The BMWs you have worked on is far more interesting than the supercars. Love the Audi you worked on recently. What I'm trying to say is, make the good deal on a cheap car and keep it simple. Maby you are past those cars and only have eyes for the luxury cars now day? I hope not.
who's Maby... maybe meant something else ;)
Just bought a 04 Yukon XL Denali clear title truck, nice shape with some small issues at COPART $2600 out the door, not bad Deals can be found but you gotta look and be in the right place qt the right time
Sam, we love the cheap builds like any of those Mercedes or that new Range Rover or that suburaban
Love the 300D! Since I retired, one of my hobbies is rebuilding Diesel cars. I don't really expect to make much money selling them, but I enjoy the process. Yes, the fees suck.
Can't buy a supercar, #firstworldproblems 😅
And that McLaren probably needs closer to $50K, possibly more after watching both vTuned and Tavarish fix up their respective vehicles.
Good luck, Sam. The market is wacked right now, and it sounds like the auctions are making things even worse.
Tavarish spent a lot more cash than he admitted to on his McLaren. (Imagine the cost of shipping the crates of parts). And he also got a sweetheart deal on the paint and body work.
The S55 AMG was a 2003. ABC not Airmatic. Seats and trim are Designo. It had keyless go, you could’ve pushed the start button on the shifter, doesn’t matter that the key didn’t reach.
if I was Scott I would be so jealous that I couldn't get my hands on these cars like Sam can...!
17:00 That is a Mercedes-Benz SEC 500 and it's worth around 15 -20k if you fix it up, back in the day it was the nicest car you could buy.

How the Goonsquad pulled off that twin turbo Audo for $85k is a mystery!! Looking forwaed to more terrific & sardonic videos!! LoL
Sam, this is the exact reason why I only deal with Manheim and other dealer only auctions. Copart's fees are ridiculous. I only sell there
I'm just glad to see a video come out again. It's been quite a while... Any content is good content...
Great video Sam thanks for making it real
Thunderbirds are really cheap to buy in nice running condition in the regular market. Lots of classic cars end up in auctions because people insure them with regular insurance thinking they are saving money. But what happens is as soon as you have a claim, even if it’s minor, the insurance company totals it because it’s more than 10 years old. If the owner would have had classic car insurance it would have been fixed.
That goop on the fuel line wasn’t from a fire. It is insulation to help against vapor lock.
