After the overnight repair following the landing mishap we follow Delmar PR efforts, a Interview I conducted with Delmar. Later after Taxi trials the last take off from Michelstadt followed by one more final beautiful display
Delmar Benjamin initiated and helped to build an fully operational copy of the famous GeeBee R-2 racing plane.
Delmar demonstrated that the plane was not only fast, but also fully aerobatic. This is demonstrated in the airshows he presented his skills and the GeeBee's aerobatic abilities.
In Germany he performed one of the last demonstrations before the GeeBee copy was finally put on display in the United States.
Material for this video was recorded in Michelstadt, Germany 2001.
A number of camera operators participated to record the weekend airshow where Delmar and his plane was one of the high points of the show.
From the combined video material Alexander Obolonsky produced for the show's organiser "Fiber Classics" (To day CARF models) a video sold by Fiber Classics.
My remuneration fort the 3 days work was the exchange of all recordings done by me and James O'Brien, who used my second camera, in return for all material recorded on that weekend.
This was honoured by A. Obolonsky who sent the relevant tapes for mu own use as "AVF Video - Airvideofred"
This CZcams clip is the only the second time I am using material handed to me from that show.
The kit for the RC model of the GeeBee R-2 shown in this video was built from a Fiber Classics Kit and is still available from CARF Models, may be even the Show video as produced by A. Obolonsky.
Aerotop videos (www.modellsport.de/shop are selling a Scale documentation of the GeeBee R-2 with video of Delmar's plane and the Fiber Classics RC model.
Enjoy!
I like how they’ve attached a plane to the engine

Thank you for visiting my ScaleJetFred channel! Kind regards from Dublin Ireland, Fred
ScaleJetFred thanks from South Wales
"So, what size engine should we use?"
"...yes."
VW Beatle?
The skill and airmanship required to pilot an aircraft like this is far beyond most pilots.
No doubt about your statement Bill
Fred
The sound of that thing in a dive is just amazing!
Flyby noise is pretty badass too :)
Wow! Most amazing flying anything I have ever seen in my life! Delmar brought his GeeBee to KAWO for a demonstration and I got to get up close to look at it. I looked over at the man next to me and it was Delmar Benjamin. I Introduced myself and said, 'I have to tell you: that thing scares the bejeezus out of me just looking at it.' He said, 'Me too.' I don't think he was kidding.
Well spoken Sam and thank you for the visit to my
ScaleJetFred channel
You can find one more recording with Delmar flying the GeeBee

🤣😅😂
Delmar is the nicest guy. I had the chance to meet him and talk to him for a few minutes at the Reno air races one year, mid to late 90s. I have a photo someplace of the two us standing beside his R-2.
Indeed Jerry!
I have one more post of the GeeBee taken on that weekend! go and see and tell your friends please
Easily one of the most awesome and insane aircraft ever made. Legendary.
Indeed Ian! I interested, you find a second recording I made on that weekend in Germany on my ScaleJetFred channel:

Considering the original was built in the 1930’s... it was so far ahead of it’s time it took decades before piloting skills caught up to the design capabilities! Just an awesome recreation!
Hi Talking GI Joe. Thank you for the visit to my ScaleJetFred channel and the comment.

In my opinion, one of the coolest single-engine prop planes ever. Of course in the group would be the Spitfire and the Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing, so my tastes are kind of all over the place. .
de HAVALLAND BEAVER
In my opinion, if it has wings, it's cool!!
+Mike Jansen I always thought the Gee Bee was an awesome plane too :)
Don`t think it can be compared to a spit or other warbirds though, they are different beasts entirely..
Kinda wanna build a small rc Gee Bee just because it looks so cool..
Not at all, a racer is a fighter less the guns.
It was an amazingly radical design for its day, and way ahead of its time. However, that also made it very, very touchy to fly, and very dangerous for a whole variety of reasons that weren't known in the 1930s (hint: aerodynamic flutter).
As long as enjoyed too!
Greetings from Ireland, fred
Brilliant , really enjoyed watching this .......................
Thanks Scott!
On my "ScaleJetFred" CZcams channel is a second recording taken on a different day ,but at the same Flying display.

One of my favorite plane!
Hello Lee!
One of mine too! A day before this video I recorded the GeeBee as it arrived at that field in Michelstadt.
Delmar had never seen it and when he landed (nor planned) he had to use all his scill's to stay alive and so sved his GeeBee.

@@ScaleJetFred that is awesome 😊💖
a most excellent design perfected by a better engine than the original and extraordinary airmanship !!! … I believe Jimmy Doolittle had the Granville brothers change the wheel pants so they wouldn’t “catch” on uneven turf runways !!!

I don't know if you ever read General Jimmy Doolittle report of flying this beautiful beast,( before he became a general, but still in the army) but if you haven't, it makes great reading . It is intense.
exactly my view!
Fred
what a great sounding plane
Hi David, the video sound gives only half of the roar the real life plane makes! Unfortunately the GeeBee is sleeping an a museum... regards, Fred
Thanks for the reply, Fred. I only wish I could hear the ear-stinging sound that the real plane must make. I remember the first time I heard a B-25 mitchell in person with that snappy exhaust. What a plane!
Thank you for your comment,

Hallo, war Life dabei, super Vorstellung.
Das ist schon eine Weile her Gerhard!
Ich whohnte frueher in Darmstad und bin noch immer mitglied in Griesheim.
Herzlichen Gruss aus Dublin,Irland! Fred
On one hand, I'm sad the Gee Bee was retired and I didn't get to see her fly. On the other hand, I'm glad Delmar chose not to take any more risks with the bird. She's impressive, but with a plane like that, it's only a matter of time before something catastrophic happens. I'm glad that accidental landing didn't turn into an accidental fire-ball.

Thanks for visiting my ScaleJetFred channel.
Greetings from Dublin Ireland from a Germany born multinational...
Great video :) having said that to see the plane and Delmars exhibition in person was truly something else,i saw him at an airshow in windsor on. forget the yr, when i first saw the plane at the show sitting there i thought it was a giant toy,you would never think it could possibly fly ,the video doesn't really give an idea of just how tiny the wings are, they are like an after thought about the same size as a sheet of plywood, the engine is huge an then you have a tiny bubble at the rudder where the pilot sits, it is totaly unbelievable to think it would fly, then Delmar gets in takes off an soon he was flying upside down 20 feet above the runway at well over 200 mph , it was the coolist thing i have ever seen, it was like a cartoon come to life that you are standing watching an one of the characters in :)

@@ScaleJetFred Hey thanks Fred, it certainly is a pleasure. And in case you didn't get the reference, El Chupacabra is a character from Disney's Planes, since this awesome looking plane does look like him!! An extremely dangerous aircraft, flying hell an aeronautical nightmare good luck I hope it never runs out!! John
Great you have found my video and thank you for the comment John!
Greetings from Ireland, Fred
G'day thank you for replying back to me, it's not that I don't like the aircraft it really is a marvel of engineering it just frightens the hell out of me. Delmar is an exceptional pilot with natural skills to fly it as he said it's not for every pilot he realises how dangerous they are. All the best Delmar a natural kind regards John Tasmania Australia
Its like the prop 1930s derivation of a Lockheed F104 starfighter.
But it never was used by the military Jess!

@@ScaleJetFredOf course, Very True, I just meant that both are basically just flying engines with stubby wings and a pilot strapped to it. Can you imagine if Gee Bee did make a military version? that would have been very cool indeed. Thanks for the great videos!

Landing in Michelstadt on an around 600 m long runway instead of the 1200 m in Mannheim where he departed!
thanks for commentin@GVBiggs> and others
Clarification:He was not supposed to land- so he had no info that the edge of the concrete Runway stuck out of the grass covered hill!.
The recovery was magic.
Also where the Lufthansa engineers to repair and get the job checked so take off from that short (600m) strip
Regards Fred
@@ScaleJetFred Hi Fred, thank you for that information! I just did not get why he wanted to land there. I thought he wanted to do a touch and go and hit that concrete slab forcing him to land.
Is he still flying nowadays?
Best regards!
A flying coffin. Even Jimmy Doolittle barely survived this death trap. The Gee Bee is clearly a thing of the past and is best kept on the ground.
+Kaputt
Good thing Delmar Benjamin didn't agree. His displays were proof positive that, while certainly a difficult aircraft to handle, in the hands of a skilled pilot it was perfectly safe. He flew the airshow circuit for 10+ years in this aircraft without any major mishaps.
Every major mishap the R-1 and R-2 had were caused by pilot error. The final accident the R-1 had was after it was purchased from the Granvilles and modified with a larger fuel tank aft of the aircraft's designed CG.
By the way, Doolittle had nothing but complimentary things to say about the Gee Bee R-1 with which he won the Thompson Trophy.
Next time perhaps you'll educate yourself or at least hold your breath when you feel like making an ignorant statement.
ABSOLUTE RUBBISH. Benjamin clocked up 1500 hours in this aircraft
Kaputt CRY NIGGA
The Gee Bee aircraft where never intended to be aerobatics, or low speed aircraft. They where ment to go fast. It was all about putting THE most powerful engine possible on THE smallest, most lightweight airframe possible. They only carried 30 or 40 gallons of fuel. Minimal instrumentation. And all of the balls a pilot could fit in his trousers.
This one flew in the 21st century and by law had to carry relevant instruments and fuel for cross country transfer to the next exhibition.
Further more, to day the safety standards for protection of pilot and particularly spectators requiered change...
Thank you reor26 for the informative comment on the original GeeBee! Greetings, Fred
See the second posting with the crash event (without fatalities)
The left U/C leg was severely damaged during an unscheduled landing.
The repair and certification to be able to take off again, took 24 hours with help of LH (Lufthansa) engineers.

Yes I did.... I've had a thing for interesting aircraft, Kermit Weeks just posted a video of his Gee Bee and that did it for me....... What a fine and unusual craft it is, IF he would bring his to Oshkosh I'd have a great wall print to add to my collection.
Best to you from,
Medford, Oregon USA.
I saw Delmar fly this plane (acrobatically) at Oshkosh, but that was probably in the late 90's or early 2000's. This plane could fly knife edge forever with so much fuselage side area. An impressive display. I also came here from Kermit's post as a sort of "where is Delmar Benjamin now".
I'd Love to see several put on a fly-by together for some photos... I really want Kermit Weeks to bring his Yellow#4 ,, what a wonderful bird for sure. Thanks, have a great day from OREGON.
I fully agree Mike
Unfortunately Delmar stopped flying this one in the same Year.
I think his "narrow escape" proved his skills by preventing a disaster;
It may also reminded him that with this plane anything can go wrong at any time.
Thanks for visiting my channel and watching the GeeBee video - one of two postings I have.

P.S i forgot that i overheard Delmar talking to a fighter pilot that had put on a display to , i forget what he was flying one of those new f somethings anyway the fighter pilot couldn't believe Delmars flying skills and told him so, i think he was as amazed as everyone else there that day.

What You See Here With Delmar Benjamin Is Simply Beyond Belief...
He Was Arguably An "Unknown Aviator"... Unlike "Hoover",,, "Art Scholl",,, Duane Cole,,, "Bevo Howard",,, or Even Late-Comer,,, Sean D Tucker, Nobody Knew Who Delmar Was... But When "Delmar" Flew This Airplane, He Stole The Show With a 60 Year Old Designed Airplane,,, and With a 50 Year Old Engine... He Simply Stole The Show,... Delmar Benjamin Never Got The ""Accolades" He Deserved... That Airplane Too,,, Should Be In The "Smithsonian",,, Right Along With The "Spirit of St Louis" and The X-15... What He Did With That Airplane,,, Was Blood Curdling",,, What a Showman,,,... Best Part, He Lived To Tell About It,,,,

What happened?
Hi ash smitty! The runway is on top of a hill. To keep the Rw reasonably level and as long as possible the end of the concrete is sticking out - not level with the gras.
The pilot landed without knowing this and the left side of the U/C hit this edge!
This incredible pilot managed to keep the GeeBee from turning over or diverting from the straight line!
Som Pilot!!!

ScaleJetFred Mate, THANKYOU so very much for the reply.
Absolutely agree, amazing pilot. And to have over 1600 hours in this type of aircraft is remarkable. The Gee bee will ground loop just by looking at it. 😅
Only Jimmy Doolittle could fly that and live....
Didn't he say that it was the scariest airplane he ever flew?

/M0ther_bra1ned/ no! He flew it for 10 years and 1500 hours. He was loosing money doing air shows so he quit.

Looks like a fast touchdown speed.
Of cause, it is a very fast flying and landing plane my friend.
Thanks for visiting ScaleJet channel
F-16’s final approach 180 mph but 140 is still fast.
WHY do air show announcers think they need to fill every second with inane chatter rather than letting people simply enjoy the sound of airplanes and engines??? They can blather at us any old time, but these are the only times when average people can hear the sounds of the past in person. So air show announcers: Go away and leave us alone!
Who knows???
Thanks for watching this video and the comment!

How on earth could the pilot see anything?
Thanks for the visit to ScaleJetFred Chester! The answer is: not enough as I recorded before this video!
See for yourself: hen he unknown to all landed without previously visiting this runway,
he would not have been able to see that the concrete at the beginning of this runway is sticking out of the grass by app 30 cm.
He intended to Touch down at the very beginning of this short runway. But then.....see it for yourself on this video I also recorded: Video link
