Is John Mayer bringing Sob Rock back? Was he really using a Soldano amp in his latest "Last Train Home" music video? Was Tomo Fujita right that you only need 2 pedals to create John Mayer's sound? Well... The Captain & Danish Pete attempt to answer all of these questions with a collection of chorus pedals, Klon-style overdrives, and of course a PRS Silver Sky.
How close will they get to John's Live Jimmy Kimmel guitar tone? Let's find out!

#Andertons #JohnMayer #LastTrainHome - Hudba
The real challenge is how can John Mayer get Pete’s tone.
Hahahaha!
Use the Dane and every bit of talent Mr Mayer can muster.
Pete does blow the guy away.
120 thumbs up. Bias, people? You don't have to like Mayer, but if you know anything about guitar tone, you know his tone is fantastic.
With a purple guitare I think
I think you guys did the best job of nailing the tone of anyone so far. It really makes me want a Silver Sky, too.
I bet sales of silver sky’s have gone through the roof over the past week
Theirs a long waiting list so order sooner than later
Pink silver Sky's
@@charleswhite9242 i inquired with sweetwater and they told me late november lol
it runs deep - In the credits of the Continnum album John thanks to lots of people, half way down the list "Eric Clapton - knows I steal from him and is still cool with it"
I was thinking the same thing. The sound is prevalent on Continum. That is why I ran and started streaming
John Mayer looks like he' playing a 3/4 size guitar, but really he's just a 1 1/4 human playing a regular sized guitar.
I'm always surprised at how big he looks. His features are that of a small man, but when you see him holding a guitar, with his freakishly large thumbs...
He’s only 6ft2-3, not a particularly massive guy
I’m 6’4”, do I look this ridiculous when I hold a guitar? Jesus.
@@uttherkunst3806 that’s what i was thinking, I’m 6ft3. I always thought my strat felt a bit small in my hands
Ah yes, the “Buckethead” effect.
Gotta love those 80s Clapton vibes!!! 👍👍👍
It's honestly the best vibe!
He even stole Phillinganes from Clapton on keyboards lol.
.
@@mouloudo well to be fair most of claptons band are/were famous session musicians like Phil Collins, Nathan East etc
My first association also. In the spirit of “It’s in the way that you use it”. And that’s certainly not a bad thing!
Clapton’s best vibe and work. No question. Soldano for life baby
I have never seen such a huge promotion campaign for a music single on CZcams. Each channel promotes this song for free.
Most hyped John Mayer track I can remember for sure. John would be delighted with t he free advertising
And Each channel gets views for covering/talking about John Mayers song. It is the nature of the beast.
Absolutely right. He releases a mediocre song and everybody loses their shit like Jesus is back on earth
A bit bittersweet how much exposure tracks like these get right out the gate. Seems like anything relatively upbeat on the contemporary side gets thoroughly depleted due to how rare it is. Reminds me of when that Pharell Williams (sp?) track "Happy" came out and it got wore out by appearing everywhere all at once. At least with this song, I've heard it a hundred times already and still like it.
Good to see that I am not the only one obsessed with this song
We have been playing it on repeat!
My 7 year old called me out on it too. “Dad you’ve listened to this a LOT this week”
I'm obsessed by the Adam Neely's version. czcams.com/video/FnxFoSSkd0g/video.html
@@Manakel77 Neely's version is definitely better. Especially the outro.
Danish Pete nailed the JM tone but when The Captain busted out the boosted Strat on the outro, I lost my mind. Brilliant tones all the way around.
You guys really nailed this. Lee that sounded really good with your playing on the outro. The tone was also incredible.
I’ve been waiting patiently for some new JM music. This is worth the wait. Loving the 80’s vibe and the clarity (get it?) of the Silver Sky.
Well done Andertons on getting us close to the tone.
The Captain's playing has gotten soooo tasty! Playing with Pete sure has brought him to the next level. Love it
I actually owned a Boss CE-2, a Ibanez Tube Screamer TS-9, a RAT distortion and a Dunlop Wah back in the late 80's. That was the stuff.
Unfortunately they were all stolen after someone broke into out rehearsal space 😭
IoI we all experienced that. Just make me a sandwich.
I've got an old school Boss Chorus, a TS-9- a Dunlop wah, and a JTM-45 and it screams Clapton
@@kaboom6157 not cool. Some of us who have experienced shit like this know it can happen in the least expected ways and it's interesting to hear his story.
@@Airhead348 He can make good food, subscribe to his channel😃🙏
The editing at the intro was amazing. Thank you!
Watching Pete and these videos drives me to want to play more. Thank you for everything you do!
Get sharkey up in the building for an interview!
I watched a video where somebody commented where they noticed SOB rock backward is “80’S” rock. 🤷♂️
So funny that I started listening to Clapton’s Journeyman album again a few weeks ago and now these nods to Clapton because of Mayer’s song. Great music from both guitarists.
Lovely August tone from Lee on that last jam out
Lee's tone at the end was so nice! Been fun to watch his playing improve over the years too... Great job Lee!
Awesome video guys. Making me miss my old Japanese CE-2, but my Walrus Audio Julianna has all my chorus needs covered. I was born in the 80's so I never got to play chorus while it was in style. It hasn't stopped me from almost always having one on my board, but I love that John is making it popular again.
Great tone and playing from Pete, very close!
Great guitar tone ! Well done !🔥🎸
What a fun video chaps! Tone seeking it's always a wonderful quest to do 🤘🎸
Love you guys!
The captains Fender tone was sensational.
More Mayer content please
Really appreciate all your videos. WIth it we can find some hobby to do in times like this....Thank you for all your VDOs....
Well done guys. Fantastic tone
Thanks for tuning in!
Y'all really nailed it on the tone 👌🏻 well done
Such a fun vid, guys! Cheers
Finally! Danish Pete whips out the purple Sky to dazzle us with his brilliance. #StillNotGayerForMayer 😂
Great job, as always! I tried this with an AnalogMan two knob chorus and a Thorpy Gunshot. The sound is basically spot on. Mike's chorus is a little less muddy than my CE2. Now if only I had John's talent! Thank you for constantly enlightening us.
Such a great song, I'm totally obsessed! Great job on this video guys! I think I pretty much nailed the tone with my CE-2 as well on my cover, but with a completely different set of pedals after that :)
Pete, you are one hell of a player man great song will buy the album when it comes out
Awesome video. You guys nailed it. Great job!
Thanks foggyblues! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great tone! The American Strat that Pete played with the mid boost reminded me of Clapton's tone with Cream on the 2005 Royal Albert Hall reunion concert!!
It's a pretty great tone. Especially the rhythm parts.
Loving the backing track Pete! I would love to have that to jam over!
Loved the playing in the outro, gents!
Good start to the day
I'm sitting here doing the patented "John Mayer Guitar Face" while you're playing. Great video lads!
it's like 80s Clapton phrasing with 80s Gilmour tone!
Dream team of tone!
Nah it’s like 80’s Clapton phrasing with early 80’s Clapton tone lol. Listen to August. Pretty damn close😂
I was thinking about "TOTO"
Good job fellas. I think you nailed it!
You guys nailed the tone, well got very very close. Was happy to hear you talking about the cut on the Wah pedal, same thing I've been struggling with over the last two days. What I would do to have someone sitting next to me making adjustments to the pedals on the fly! Again, great job on this video, thanks for posting it up!
Mmm, maybe I'm old school => pulling the cords out of the guitars with the volume up isn't risking breaking the speaker cones?
I've always wanted a purple tele and Pete finally pushed me over the edge. Got a purple Schecter PT Special on reserve order.
Next: When My Train Pulls In by Gary Clark Jr., need that fuzz thing set proper with SG or 335.
Yes yes yes !! Pls
nah his best version of that was off the live album when he still used a casino
I saw him at Glastonbury he used a sweet Gibson SG
Absolutely!. Gary is a master of fuzz guitar tones right now !
Really nice, well done guys. I would have loved to see how close you could get with just a Boss Katana though.
If that last part is solely the Dimension into a Klon, I’m ordering a Dimension now! I used to run my chorus into my overdrive till a ‘pro’ told me I had my pedals in the wrong order. So I changed it. Never liked chorus after that, but never made the connection that the sound I love is ‘the wrong order.’ John Mayer and this video you did made me realize how perfect that sound suits me. Thanks so much!
This is one of my favorite ever Andertons videos great work, I think you both absolutely nailed it....nice with the pink Andertons T-shirt Lee and you after a pink guitar now? I just ordered one hahaha
Great to see the guys, 'Working on the sound of the band, Trying to get the music right'! :-)
The shuffle with the snare too
They’re just…….pretending….
Like they new the plan
But then after all they were pretending
Pretending to understand
anyone that wants to get in deep with this sound, Listen to Clapton's August and Behind the sun albums
August - cloned tone
And Journeyman 👍
The chorused tone is even more Journeyman, especially Pretending.
Exactly :-)!!!!
One of the greatest video from Andertons ! Congrats
John (lol)
Thanks for tuning in!
Omg the 80's style intro though , 10/10
Nice playing Pete
Matthew and Rabea: Wait, that's illegal!
jokes aside this video was great, i really REALLY hope sound like returns eventually
the chances of it returning this year are slim to none, buuuuuuuuuuuuut next year they should be back with more artists and ultimate rigs! (I hope for the ultimate rigs just so I can write more fitting song titles for the jams)
@@sakimiyu4169 well when they return i wanna see Vivian Campbell, that's one of the ones i wanna see
@@sakimiyu4169 How do you know that?
@@WM-sz5mn well it should've returned in February, it's now June and still no sound like videos!
also on Rabea's youtube channel he made an update that he hurt his leg so he's out of action for a while
I must say i prefer the sound with the Strat to the PRS. This was incredibly close guys, Well Done!
I love his new song - guess you did too given how quickly you uploaded a video on it :)
Keep going Andertons , you’re are building an exceptional brand
Great job nailing the tone… personally I was hoping never to hear that late 80’s commercial tone ever again, but I guess we can’t shake the 80’s… yet! I remember crying of desperation when Behind The Sun came out and I heard gated reverbs, Simmons drums, synths and all
80's Clapton (Pretending/It's In The Way That You Use It) tone...JM is awesome and he just made my original CE2 jump up in value 😎
The best thing about this video is Pete’s backing vocals to the backing track. Unrivaled 😂
This is the best channel on CZcams.
I think I agree with Tomo. As I listened to that track, quite a few times, it seems like I am hearing a dimension. I hear modulation without much movement. Also, since I am the proud owner of a line 6 M5, I do have the dimension model, and I think it sounds pretty good.
Also, I have to say, a couple of weeks ago at my local guitar center, I finally got my hands on a silver sky. One of the nicest strats I’ve ever played.
Thank you for this video, I needed it so bad 🙇♂️
Enjoy and we hope it helps with nailing the John Mayer tone!
I didn't even think there was wah in this solo. The thought never crossed my head.
I would love to see u guys doing a "Yacht Rock rig"
This is just 80's Clapton. "It's in the way that you use it ... ."
Yes! My first thought as well.
Love, love them both.
I've loved this type of tone since I heard Clapton Lethal Weapon!
Love the title pic guys!
We need John himself on Andertons live room.. #dream
I kept getting the “Clapton Edge of Darkness” feel 👍🏻🎸🎶🎶
Damn that strat is all you'd ever need if it's tone you're going for
Yeah sometimes you can get too carried away Good guitar Good amp is mostly all you need
Thought it was more pleasing than the Silver Sky tbh
90% of tone, my instructor said is in the player themself.
Loving all these john Mayer guitar vids coming out by everyone ... i learned last train home about 5 hours after it was released 🖖😎🎸
One thing that really brings back that 80's sound is the synth sound. Full Toto patch.
The 80s had some great delicious sounds, worth revisiting indeed!
I do love the Clapton Journeyman tone.
Love it !!
Definitely Love The Shows Guys 👍👍🎶🎶🎸
89-95 Fender Strato Plus with Lace Sensor and Tbx or 89-00 Fender Stratocaster Eric Clapton/Fender Stratocaster Buddy Guy with Lace Sensors, Tbx and mid Boost....
I LOVE that stuff
I heard the song and i thought "it's Clapton's Journeyman tone". He nails it. One of Clapton's best sounds.
totally the exact tone he used in Pretending
@@uncledeadhead3674 Yep... with a little Bad Love for good measure. Hahaha. Can't wait to hear Mayer's album. I cut my guitar teeth on Clapton's Journeyman.
Exact tone. To perfection!
I still have my Boss CE-2 chorus pedal which I bought in 1978; it still works but is a bit hissy now. Must get it renovated one day.
As I said on another video and you also mentioned John got some inspiration from Clapton's Journeyman album. Especially "No Alibis and Breaking Point". Similar take on the use of the 80's DX7 type rhythm backing. Sounds to me like possibly an auto-wah or wah with a flanger/vibe.
#Pete rips those E blues pentatonic blues licks pretty well. Sounding great!
A salesman 'With' product knowledge .
I can imagine Andertons are pretty well, all sold out on the PRS already. 🌺
very good test
That little wing chorus pedal is so good, sounds the best in my opinion and was surprised it wasn't higher up in the chorus shootout possibly thr best chorus pedal atm
You guys have done an awesome job, but I have to admit … Tomo Fujita’s suggestion in your outro does it for me!
The tone on Kimmel is very different from the studio tone. I'm pretty confident that the studio tone IS a Soldano and might even be John's EC Grey Clapton Strat as well. I think what we saw on Kimmel was his latest iteration of live rig.
There's a thickness and sustain to the studio tone that wasn't there on Kimmel.
Yeah i have a feeling he used a soldano on the record
Yeah. You can see a Soldano in his music video.
I agree. There’s probably a compressor involved in the studio version as well.
I'd also guess that it’s his standard live board with all the amps running totally clean and everything in front. Tubescreamer boosted by the Katana or something like that.
I would say that Clapton used a Soldano on stage but a vintage twin in the studio on full pelt.
Danish Pete!!! Love your playing!
Yess
I love how everyone is so hyped about his guitar tone !!! Guitar Community reunited :)..
Definitely not everyone.....
@@MuadDib74 Certainly not me !
Not a fan of any form of boss chorus pedals. The 80s was defined by rack choruses, not the boss ones that just have noise and akward volume jumps
I’m certainly not. I wish it remained in the mid 80s.
I love Lee low key alluding to the fact he DM'ed John on Instagram to ask about the pedals. 😎
I totally agree with lees statement about the angel wing chorus it sounded great, really performed well.I’d love to have heard that with the klon, talk about chalk and cheese 😂
Back during the journeyman era eric clapton used a Yamaha spx 90 for chorus according to what I've heard. I have seen him quoted while talking about using it. Of course it was a popular unit during that time. But the Ce2 and dimension units were popular as well.
This is Hysterical to me
For some years EC just had a Boss analogue chorus and a wah on stage. Often Soldanos on stage but possibly a vintage twin in the studio.
One thing I do love is the color pallet of this era with the beachy pastels and flashy neon colors. Always did love this style. Lol. Can you tell I was born in 83? Lol.
Pete is enjoying the hell out of it!
August being my second favorite EC album (after Journeyman) this song is really a serious tribute to that era, not only the tone but the licks are Slowhand's best of the best
Always loving your videos guys and for me the closest sound is when you've used the angel wing chorus from tone city. Great video guys #Gayformayer
This is one of those videos where i press like before watching
And we thank you for your Like!
Lee gets a great Clapton tone at the end there. Great video chaps. One thing I thought I heard on the Kimmel version was a sustain pedal of some sort? Thoughts?
Captain’s tone with the strat at the end was so money
Fender Deluxe TM, tone city chorus, ibanez TS (add Durple to taste). TS smooths out the tops and lifts the mids and it is delicious.
I cannot recommend the Angel Wing enough, I use it live with my band at every gig, it's just perfect!
