- In today's episode of Sound Like, Rabea & Matt take on the challenge to sound like legendary songwriter & blues guitarist John Mayer! Coming to the fore with a Fender Strat (and later, PRS), John's crafted a sublime tone. Clear and smooth, yet crunchy when required, guitarists have tried to replicate it for years. How will the guys get on when money is no object?

Thanks for all the kind words on my weightloss guys. It's super appreciated, and I'm glad it's noticeable! Big love to you all!
Rabea Massaad No problem
you're doing fucking amazing recently, i didn't really notice it till a month or two ago but you really are looking fucking amazing
Rabea Massaad can u do sounds like avenged sevenfold please
Not to overshadow your massive axe skills, but credit where it's due, mate!
Keep it up bro!
Well done to Bea for losing all that weight! Damn!!
HECK YES THANK YOU
Dan O'Flaherty yes I was going to say the same thing. Watched a video from NAMM in January. Takes hard work and dedication.
Dan O'Flaherty he transitioned to a chappers with afro wig.
Excuse me, good sir. Do you have any food left over?
I love John Mayer but i probably will never spend this much money to sound like him, I just love coming and hearing Rabea play man. Such a badass.
3:00 would not dare pick up a £2600 guitar like that
That is hilariously and ironically true for most
Well if you ding it up, at least now you're forced to get it anyway!
I pick up my $26,000 viola like that
@@alexandergrimes6959 Everyone picks up their Violas like that.
John Mayer is one of the current guitar gods. In his 08 concert DVD, he plays a dark grey strat with a rosewood fretboard. To this day, I have no idea what it's secret sauce is, but it's one of my favorite sounding guitars of all time. Shortly after, my best friend and I walked into our local music store and there was an American Standard strat with the same color and fretboard. I took it off the wall, plugged it in, and instantly sounded like John Mayer, with way less practice. I bought it, and it's the only guitar I own that I will never sell
Zachary Robertson dipper pickups
Zachary Robertson Does he play it on "Good Love Is On The Way"? If so, that's his signature Cypress Mica strat, which looks grey but really is olive green.
Could you do a video for "The most versatile guitar rig in the world" - for a limited budget of say 1000GBP choose guitar, amp and pedals and try to achieve the most tones that either are similar to some artists or fit to a genre. For hobby musicians who play covers mostly and don't want to go all out this would be very interesting.
Check out 'Dave Simpsons' youtube channel. The 'how many tones can you get from one amp' series is pretty much what you've asked for...
Sure. Get a guitar in HSH with coil tap for almost all of the money. The rest - spend on a decent audio interface, and just plug straight into PC. Look for free VST plugins, or eventually invest in good software. Solved. Next :)
MiegmaishMenas that and/or general genre based rigs under a budget
HSH Mexican strat (I have one and it can do nearly any tone you can think of) and something versatile for the amp like a fender bassbreaker or a blackstar HT.
blackstar ht5. something with a humbucker and a coil split maybe esp ltd eclipse or high end epiphone les paul. an electroharmonix wailer wah flashback delay and an ibz ts9 overdrive.
"I'm going to find another you" played by Pete's ass hanging out
I am blown away at how good Rabea is at sounding like amazing artists! Also, that song that Pete played was beautiful...like a melodic 50's thing, really nice!
Johnny. Fuckin. MARR. PLEASE :D
This!
People have been asking for Johnny Marr and Radiohead for ages now. I don't get why they don't do it... I'm also surprised they haven't done U2 yet!
It could be because Johnny Marr and Radiohead tones are harder to nail than most of the classic rock and blues rock bands they've done. And U2 on a budget is hard because of all the pedals involved.
+quasarpuffs I don't think Marr's tone is too hard to achieve but maybe they can't play his songs.
Yeah I'm guessing that neither of them are very good at playing his style since they usually stick to blues rock & metal. Regardless, they should learn a few riffs and go for it.
As a Mayer tone aficionado, I approve of these tones
12:57 now that was spot on. Great work by Pete!
I reeeeeeeaaaaally love theses videos! I have 1 guitar and 1 amp and not even a handful of pedals and I'm always blown away by how how close I can get to my fav artists tones and you guys make it a fantasy to check these vids!!! Great, great stuff!!!
"Who Did You Think I Was?" was on Try not Continuum if I'm not mistaken
Joe Higgs was thinking the same thing
You right it is on try
Mandela effect
Joe Higgs different band all together but that’s just splitting hairs at that point
try is a live album it was on continuum originally
We need to sound like John Mayer
Can’t use this guitar because the pick guard is WRONG
Everybody knows how much the pickguard affects the tone. Tone 101
Pick guard would still be wrong with this guitar 😂
Rabea. You and John might be my two favorite guitar players, so to see you playing his riffs WHILE busting the bank. Unreal man. Thank you for doing this brother
I can't believe how perfect that sounds. Outstanding set up & playing.
Guys, please mount a camera above the board next time so we can see the settings on the pedals. Great work, what a lovely sound!!!
this sounds amazing, so close to 'where the light is'
Unreal tone! Best video yet! And yeah Rabea you do look great dude, keep it up!
Holy crap. That sounds unbelievable. Abosulutely amazing.
Sound like Eric Johnson by busting the bank (or without but I think it's impossible...). PLEEEEEASE!!
just back the tone knob off and you're there
I think the real winner here is the amp, it sounds beautiful!
This was absolutely spot on! really enjoyed this video, thx guys!
Finally you did this one... Really happy for it. Great job.

I wish they showed more of the effects on camera and where the knobs are etc etc.
Agreed! It would be really nice to see the knobs on the pedals, especially since they got that Full-Drive tone pretty on point
Yeah man I agree but you can tell just by looking at certain camera angles throughout the video. For example, check out @10:48. Mosfet FD2 looks to be (from left to right) 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, 9 o'clock, 9 o'clock positions respectively
Fantastic job, once again guys. I could listen to those Mayer licks all day!
best rig I have seen so far. Even you dont try to imitate John, the driven blues sound is just insane!
I would love to see you guys do Mateus Asato!
Sound Like Matt Bellamy BY busting the bank!!!!!!
João Pedro this!!
I just love Beas facial expressions while playing! Great Video and nice John Mayer Sound too!
These two are top blokes!!! Humble and passionate about guitar playing...
Can you do Gary Clark Jr????
15:57 - Bea goes mental...my eyes start to point inwards.
The best tone you guys have ever gotten, by far. I'm sold on the Milkman amp. Such a sweet sounding amp.
I think this is one of the best joobs you've done in regards to nailing the tones. That Fulldrive sounds great!
Watching now, but wanted to pop in and say BUCKETHEAD !!!
Evh! Overdue for him!
Sounds beautiful! Great video! Thanks guys!
Wow!! Great tones there! Good job, guys!!
Do you guys think you could grab David and do a Sound Like for a bassist or two? Some iconic ones with big parts in their bands
PS I've finally gotten around to checking out Toska and Ode to the Author is one of the best EPs I've ever heard. You're quickly becoming one of my favorite guitarists :)
"Contiuum" is such a good John Mayer album!.....
I actually enjoy the 'BY busting the bank' segments way more, since Bea and Matt get to show their vast knowledge regarding the gear they use and all those Fun Facts about it. I feel like I learn a lot more about what I could sound like if I spent the money on 2 or 3 good pedals and see which one I dislike. Great job, keep up the good work!
Y'all killed it on this one, might be your best to date!
guys, I've never really listened to John Meyer but this right sounds fucking epic
john mayer* u dumb human toilet
Dick Indiaz you*
Mr Muck aint talkin to you dumbass baboonass
Dick Indiaz Was that other dude talking to you though? BTW your kids got on and tried to throw an insult at me about a monkey or something. Was quite lame so I'd have a word with them about it if I were you!
Mr Muck i aint got no kids yo dumb ass nigga, maybe some bitch got pregnant but i don't know bout that shit, yo why you interrupting the conversation i had with this other nigga though, now get yo sad ass outta me face me nigga
Love these videos but I'd love to see an overview of the pedals for their settings.
That blues driver to me takes the cake with the mix. Good God man. That is beautiful.
Rabea you look so good man, so happy to see you taking care of yourself.
Milkman Amps, wow!
Without any further ado,
Sound like Johnny Marr! Gonna keep on asking until it happens!
I would have thought you guys would get a two rock amp. The milkman was more recent I think. In any case it sounds good!
they don't sell Two Rock.
Jona de Graaf ah that makes sense
I think his recent profile photo is him with a Tokai strat... He changes gear a lot I think
Mokuakae he's just like us, he loves gear! But he has more money to spend!
Mokuakae he's just like us, he loves gear! But he has more money to spend!
Just starting the video and my night has already been made. Cheers.
Great episode!!!!Thanks for that, guys!!!
15:55 made my insides all warm and fuzzy
I challenge y'all to sounds like Derek Trucks!!!!
That is a good one...
I don't think Andertons stock Derek Truck's fingers.
Best one yet!
Worth the waiting 2 weeks with no "Sound Like"
I Love this show!
This is really close, I love the tone in this era of John Mayer, I love that clean sound compressed and a little distorted
Damn! That sounds amazing, even through computer speakers. It's really rather depressing that is sounds so good; knowing that the price tag is $$$.
Great stuff again boys. Brian May next pleeeeeeese.
Just a red special replica into a vox amp with delay pedals
Or the boss ps6 harmonist
i love hearing bea play improvisations over some of my favorite songs.
Yay you guys did this. Thanks alot
Sound like Joe Bonamassa would be awesome!
Thats easy, just have literally all the vintage gear...
Might be right but kind of hard to do for under 1500£?
Thomas Højberg That's true and jokes aside I would also be very keen to a see a sounds like Joe on a budget. I love his tone!
ya we'll just grab the 59 burst, 2 high powered 50s fender twins, 2 50s fender bassman, vintage wahs, and like 14 other guitars from the 50s. nailed it.
Once again, not very easy to find the equivalent for under 1500 pounds..
JUDAS "FREAKING" PRIEST! Late 70's early 80's.
Agree with the compliments on the full tone mosfet. It has so much depth I've noticed when you play live
That sounded amazing!
It would be really cool if you could do either Tame Impala or Blake Mills next
You gotta do a sound like Chevelle!
Nicholas M Haha only a mark iv would almost bust the bank on its own.
Amazing! So close to the John Mayer sound. Great vid
Apart from great tone, I realize the great playing quality and also variety from Rabea. He’s the real deal.
you should a tried the new PRS that he's using now!
Sounds like Johnny Marr of the smiths or John Squire from the stone roses next please!!!
This is actually, I think, the best bust the bank yet. Dead on, especially those Slow Dancing and Gravity cleans. Credit to Rabea for always nailing the feel and playing style of each person they do, what a player!
I love this series and i look forward to it each week. I would love to see a Paul Kossoff without busting the bank. Cheers!
I reckon Johnny Marr would be a cool episode.
I can't believe how much weight Bea has lost. Keep up the great work brother!
Beast tone! good rig guys
Sounds soooooo good!
Would love to hear sounds like Sleep or Electric Wizard!
Pretty close!
Since we're breaking the bank here, why not use a stereo setup?
I'd have gone Custom Shop 60's strat into the Katana (always on) into a Tubescreamer, into the Klon clone (or the mosfet fulldrive) into the Aqua Puss.. then into a signal splitter (he uses a Radial JD7, but the Tonebone switchbone is similar enough for this purpose) then into a Two Rock Crystal (similar circuit to his signature two rock) and the Milkman (or a Fender Vibroverb)
Scoop the mids, lots of reverb.. and when you need OD kick on the Klon style pedal, and when you need to get his lead tones, stack the Klon with the Tubescreamer!
Hey, do you also use a compressor? And if so, do you leave it on or do you use it just occasionally?
My rig goes 59 strat or my silver sky - keely- strymon compadre compressor - cali76- Klon- or my duelist- bonai-strymon flint- aqua puss or strymon for delay- two rock silver sterling or my 68 silverface super reverb. I don’t usually use all my pedals. I use maybe 3 since a 5k amplifier removes the need for almost any pedals.
HerrMeier007 use it all the time it depends what you play. Compressors are meant to bring out the character shape the sound and level everything
I laughed at how bang on that tone was when you played “I’m gonna find another you.” Amazing!
Sounds great guys!!
Please sound like Deftones
I won't go until you sound like Deftones
EDDIE
Ibanez rg
line 6 spider
Fuzz face
you're welcome
yup!
Line 6 Spider hahahahahahahahaha..can't tell if you're trolling or mental.
line 6 dt25?
EDDIE Deftones are a bit tricky as Steph changes up guitars/amps and tuning almost every album. I know for the bulk of their catalog (ATF-White Pony) he was using ESP customs loaded with SD pickups into a Marshall JMP1 Preamp. As far as pedals go he used a lot of different stuff in the studio. For the Self-titled he used ESP 7's loaded with EMG 707's and the same preamp. After that he used the same guitars in 7 or 8 string flavors but used a ton of different amps for their studio stuff. I know on SNW, Diamond Eyes and KNY he used different amps/pedals for pretty much every track and even multiple amps on single tracks. As of late, he uses ESP 8s with his signature Fishman set and an Axe-Fx II, but he used Orange (or digital representations of) for Gore.
SRV BY BUSTING THE BANK
It’s to easy
crummyy it’s that way with anyone if you have the chops. A 59 strat and a Silver Sterling Signature it’s very much more then achievable and good gear always helps.
@crummyy why are ppl commenting on this a year later? lmao wtf... I own a simul class mesa boogie and a 50w plexi clone. im all set dudes, it was just a push for another video
Fender Blackface amp pushed and any Strat like guitar. Thank me later.
@@achill3usoverclocking874 see comment above lol
Fantastic playing and tones, Rabea
absolutely nailed it guys!! keep up the good work
Sounds like Deep Purple, Rush, Jeff Beck, Primus or Free ?
"Massive" WTF at 19:51 ?? Lulz
John Mayer has a Massive Penis!
Gott say...from the first note of "Slow Dancing..." that you played, I knew you guys nailed it. You just NAILED the live album tone, which has to be some liquid fire tone right there.
Top chops. For a fella who plays metal and stuff, I tip my hat to your chops.
Sound like Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever from Coheed and Cambria.
LOOK like Claudio Sanchez by being Rabea Massaad
Sounds like John Petrucci
he used to use ibanez and now uses musicman, he had a signature ibanez but it's now discontinued, i reckon they should use the Ibanez RG350 to save on the pennies but they could use a Sterling JP60 cos you can get a cheapish john petrucci signature musicman, since mesa boogie is way out of reach Egnater or Marshall could work but i'd say Egnater cos DSL40C by Marshall is overused, he also had a few pedals which they could get but if too many go over budget i'd choose the ones they can get to stay under budget, he uses an Ibanez TS808 but if they got a TS808 it'd probably bend the budget a bit much, i mainly want to see him do the Pull Me Under guitar solo so they should definately get a wah
for setlist i'd say:
intro and 1st song: Pull Me Under
2nd song: As I Am
3rd song: Metropolis pt 1
4th song: Under A Glass Moon
5th song: Pull Me Under (solo)
Ibanez RG350 - £400
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430
MXR EVH Flanger - £150
Boss Phase Shifter - £110
Dunlop John Petrucci Cry Baby Wah - £200
MXR Analogue Chorus - £100
Boss DD3 Delay - £115
the grand total is £1505 so they are £5 over budget but it's not that big a deal so it should sound close
Love it! Sounds amazing
That reverb sounds great! Really added to Pete's playing, for example
Jonny Greenwood!
you guys have to do a bust for santana
cos he has a £3000 signature model PRS as far as i am aware and then they can get a mesa boogie amp
I'm literally getting chills from that tone
IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Not that it's even really my bag but... How's about a Queen sounds like with/without busting bank. Would be an excuse to play some awesome classic tunes. :-D
Sam Knight agreed. You can never have enough awesome Bryan May solos!
Guys, please do a Peter Green by busting the bank!!
they have to do it without busting first, but i know they will use the Artist Inspired Peter Green Gibson for the BY busting
This is the best one yet. That "Slow Dancing" tone is killer!
Not a John Mayer listener, but my god those tones are beautiful! So nice they have me tearing up!
