- For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Since I've had the Schecter for a couple weeks and had a chance to gig it, I wanted to reflect on this guitar, which was I think just as good as people had been telling me they were - really impressive.

Very impressed with the playing! The layers you lay down are just immaculate!
First of all, fantastic playing as ever!
I usually spend 2-3k on a gigging guitar (Suhr, Musicman etc) but wanted a SSS but never really enjoyed real strats and saw NJ doing this cheaper version. When I tried it in the shop about half the staff, who also gig, said they were getting one! So nice for the price range - and I always take this and my no 1 Suhr Tele to gigs to cover all bases.
And you need to listen to Remarkably Human - Nick is a composer as well as a sterling guitarist and the pieces on that album are just stunning. Also - I saw him do a masterclass in the UK and he's very charismatic and a great raconteur!
Would love to see a review of a Strandberg. Just a thought.
Hmm...Missing a headstock though?
A really fantastic playing! It’s a pleasure listen your music!
Beautiful arrangement. Gotta love them
Schecter will be making a John Cordy signature before the decade is over. Bet on it! Great playing man.
I have the HSS configuration of this guitar and it’s great! I did a theater gig with it a couple weeks ago and it played great and sounded awesome. It’s very versatile. Also great rendition of She’s Leaving Home!
This is my second schecter from the asian manufacturers. I am stunned how good they are. Extremely solid, fantastic sound and value
I have both the USA SSS and the import HSS. I actually prefer the import. I especially like the stock HB tones. Everything from Nick Johnston to EVH tones. The only things definitively better on the USA are the impeccable fretwork and the wenge neck/fretboard, although the roasted maple neck on the import isn’t far behind. I also have the PRS SE Silver Sky and the Schecter import blows it away in every way.
That's how it is. When I was definitely going to buy the PRS SE Silver Sky in yellow, I tried the Schecter NJ in the same store after seeing it in many videos and I had no doubts. Also if you want to copy the Strat buy the real one. The NJ is another guitar.
Is that trem always floating? It looks like it's a dive only Strat style bridge.
@@tenebroruncr4374 Are you still playing it? I'm in the same boat at this point looking to get an SSS, I can't decide if I want to go PRS or Schecter.
Your backing track is sweet here, love the chord progression
I recently bought the HSS version of this guitar and I am very impressed with the tone and voice of the guitar. I am super happy that I did.
Sounds awesome, dude. Keep it up.
I bought an atomic coral (pink) one, a year ago or so and I am absolutely in love with the aesthetics and the feel of it. Highly recommended!
Good to see a follow-up review. Another in a few months would be good, too.
Amazing strat and even more amazing player
Hey John, man… your content and playing… wow
I discovered you on the Lonestar vs Trad Clean vid (I own a Lonestar) and subsequent Two Rock CZcams searches!
I’m now making my way through watching your back catalog of vids
Cheers from NZ
Chris
oddly enough i got to try one of these out for the first time at church this morning (humbucker in the bridge though), an absolutely incredible guitar for the money!
Really intrigued by this guitar.
That guitar sounds and looks fantastic.
Great playing brother . !
Almost bought one , just couldn’t justify one more guitar now , bought a Laney Super Cub 15 watt head instead . Might consolidate in the future and get one cause this guitar is my fav for the money besides what I could custom put together myself for the same or less money …. Thanks John and glad all is well brother 😎👍
I have been watching some of your videos lately and then realized I wasn't subbed so I did. Keep up the good work. I am getting my HSS NJ on Tuesday. I hope I love it.
I hope you do too - let me know when it arrives - it's great to hear how other folks find theirs
@@johnnathancordy I got it today and I am so happy. I love the sound of the pickups and the color Atomic Frost which is Daphne Blue is awesome (favorite color). I got lucky and got a light one 7.85lbs which is very important to me. The neck radius and slimmer profile will take some getting used to as I prefer a medium C but isn't that part of the journey.
@@johnnathancordy after having it a few days I had to return it. The slimmer neck profile and 14in radius just didn't do it for me.
Great playing! I would also love to see a review of the new Ibanez Q series headless guitars
Very nice playing.
Cool vid man, the neck looks lovely on that! My only concern with Asian built (exception of Japan) is the quality of the electrics over the long term but other than that their build is fantastic - I have experience of manufacturing in Asia (electrics were always a problem there too). Hope your channel gets back to form, love your channel & sorry you hear that sht happened
Thank you John. Yes, I think the Indonesian instrument s are a great value, especially doing “fly-dates”…like coming to UK & Europe. Several years when there was out of the USA tours I couldn’t find a decent guitar in that price range.
I love that these have extra jumbo frets on them. Might buy for that reason alone.
Love my nick Johnston the pickups are so clear and pristine, mine was perfect no en perfection! Build quality as good as it gets.
I can not wait to get my Schecter next month. Schecter c1 exotic spalted maple. There are 3 of them here in thailand and I picked one out 2 days ago. This will be my first guitar over 300 bucks. I've been trying to teach myself guitar for about 3 years now. After buying a few guitars and those guitars having issues ,, I would get frustrated and stop trying to learn. So in September I decided to buy another guitar as I really want to learn. I purchased a ibanez az essential 40 , which by the way your video help me choose that guitar. The ibanez is the first guitar I have bought, taken out the box , done nothing to it and I have played it almost every day. I also bought the fender gtx 100 which i enjoy and it's helping me learn alot about pedals, amp sounds and different speakers. It's amazed me how quickly I'm learning by having equipment that I enjoy and works the way it's suppose to ! It's Christmas time , i turn 55 in February and i have decided to treat myself to a guitar that checks all the boxes for me . I now feel that I can do this ! Have a Wonderful Christmas and a Happy New year! Thanks for your video's and your beautiful playing ! Cheers from Thailand !
Beautiful work...and I'm not surprised regarding the guitar! Schecter makes some of thr nicest guitars for the money out there. I'd put their luthiery up against some giants without question.
I've got schecter PT fastback and it's my go to guitar and the quality and build is excellent for the price. I'm looking at getting the NJ HSS next purely of the experience I've had
Holy hell man
I got to try one of these at a shop not too long ago. It played great. Kinda reminded me of my dk24 especially the neck
I like Nick's music, has a certain uniqueness, refreshing I think.
Awesome playing John can't decide between that model or the Solo ll, maybe both!
I've had one of these a little over a year, I didn't care for the bridge HB. I replaced the bridge HB with a Suhr Thornbucker+ and it has been my go to as of late. Just a very versatile and amazing playing guitar.
I did the same, I replaced the hb for a thornbucker plus as well, much better, more clarity, I'm about to get my 3rd nick johnston indo.ive ordered the USA atomic pups to put in the atomic orange, better than my USA fenders easily.
Amazing I also changed the bridge HB for a Suhr thornbucker! Great guitars!!!
I’m looking for something like this in the 800-1200 USD range. Definitely going to add it to the shortlist.
The new Nick Johnston PT (tele) is quite interesting because it should have a thicker neck. Although I would prefer the traditional Tele pickup configuration (or then have that humbucker on the bridge position).
Thanks for the review. Very interesting. How would you say the Schecter Nick Johnston compares to the Sire Larry Carlton -- finish, pickups and component quality, etc?
Sounds great John , thanks for the all the info and consistency. I was wondering if you could do a review of 2 higher end guitars I've been looking at. The PRS Fiore (Mark Lettieri signature) , and that beautiful Rick Graham signature Charvel.
I don't think it's something I could easily afford as those are crazy expensive guitars!
@@johnnathancordy true , i do understand that , some good ones could also be the Cort guitars , and the Ernie Ball strat types. Cheers mate
Great review! It sounds great. Would you say the guitar is light, or heavy?
Those straps you use look super comfy. They a brand available in the UK? Really enjoyed the video!
Yeah, mine is less then a year old, and the pots are crackling no matter how much I get them cleaned
I think its time to go to my local shop and buy a couple of CTS pots to swap the korean pots in my NJ
Bought the pink sss one of these, ended up replacing the bridge pup with a dimarzio tone zone s. This is such a beast of a guitar it ain't even fair
It checks most of my boxes but I wish they would still make a version with a rosewood fretboard. Even in my neck of the woods you can only get the one with the ebony fretboard which is too bright for what I would use it for.
I have this bad boy in HSS pinky version..such a great guitar for the money..i have one question for you sir, are u have planing to upgrade the pick up?if yes can you tell me what pickup would you get?thx sir
I hope you'll have an opportunity to review a Gibson Firebird with P90s. It's one the few guitar models that consistently sounds kind of "magical" to me. I don't particularly care for how they look, but their sound makes me want one.
I should replace the tuners on my Strat, and have been thinking about locking tuners, something I haven't used before. Do you have any tips on which ones are good, and ones to avoid? Might make for an interesting video. Thanks
The Sterling LK100D and Ibanez AZ226 are other great guitars out of Indonesia. They're killing it these days (although I think my LK100D is several years old at this point and it is just spot on).
Cort g300 pro may be an interesting one to check out.
I have the SSS version in Atomic Coral Because I prefer it to the HSS and I recognize that it is a very good guitar, superior to the price it has. How many brands sell them more expensive and are much worse; Fender, Ibanez... Very comfortable neck and fingerboard if you like it hyper thin and in roasted maple with ebony . Body very similar to the Strat in comfort, bridges and machine heads Body very similar to the Strat. Locking tuners and two-point bridge. And the threaded nut. Maybe the microphones are what I like the least because they lack the timbre of a Strat but it's not, maybe it's the best. In that price range there is no better guitar in another brand regarding quality.
I have the hss
Both pots are very crackly even after a clean , after 6 months ownership.
…trem arm has stuck in the thing .
Locking tuners a bit flimsy
The single coils sound beautiful, the humbucker is a bit dark & mushy sounding & slightly underpowered
Very playable fretboard
My other guitar, a reverend eastsider T & is much more solidly built
All in all the NJ diamond is very good & fun to play 👍🏻
I own this guitar in Atomic Snow. I've been considering the HSS version of this guitar in Atomic Frost.
I'm quite interested in this guitar as well, the only thing that scares me is the "thin" neck, im not a fan of thin necks , hence I've never liked Ibanez guitars for the reason, to order a guitar off the internet without being able to pick it up and play it is also a huge concern, I'm also eyeballin the PT special with the P90 in the neck position but also heard the neck is " thin"
I’m really interested in this guitar and it made me explore Nick’s music. He’s amazing you should definitely check him out. I want an orange HSS
I bought the HSS one, absolutely love it! However, Im not in love with the tremolo/ whammy bar. It feels way too rigid and stiff. Maybe Im missing something here and my lack of knowledge about gear is screwing me over, but that's my only complaint about it 1 year in.
Yup, it's my guitar and it's awesome :) I'm going to put a bareknuckle polymath on it btw
Should check out the Schecter PT Fastback iiB (tele deluxe with dual splittable humbuckers and a bigsby). Very solid, and the price is nice
Now all you need to do is get yourself a USA made model and be amazed at how nice a strat can be. You could also check out the PT series from Schecter, the PT Special seems like a lot of guitar for the money on the spec list. Godins are also nice in this price range.
The PT Special is a very nice guitar. It feels very similar to the Nick Johnston Trad in terms of playability, although it has a slightly thicker neck (~ 1 mm). The tones are of course very different, veeery warm neck (the P90) and rather bright bridge. The middle position is really amazing for clean tones... 😀
I know how nice a strat can be, I've got 4 K lines...
What about the Van Nuyens Schecter stuff - what's that about?
@@johnnathancordy yea I've been drooling at a Truxton for a while now. Never held those Schecters in my hands but given that they are made at the same factory as other import Schecters and use same/similar part they are gonna be just a variation on those same guitars
Torn between the roasted maple fretboard, or roasted with ebony?
Would love to see a review of an Ibanez THBB10 (Tim Henson Model)!
now if i could get that exact guitar with gold hardware and a bridge humbucker 😮💨👌🏼
Hi John, could you review a Sterling Luke guitar 🎸please 🙏 . Thanks. Excellent Channel !!! Cheers ! I bought a Schecter Nick Johnston ( Indonesian made ) and the frets buzz between the 17th to 21st frets .But I'm keeping the guitar and going to take it to a Luthier to get the frets stoned as the guitar 🎸 is awesome 👌
Ah thanks for sharing your experience - I'll see if I can find a Sterling or a couple to check out
For the price this NJ is a great Strat. Produced by Cort. You can even test a Cort G290 Fat for comparison. Really good instruments at reasonable prices come from this Indonesian factory.
I really liked these guitars and wanted one for so long :D I think the first edition had 'better' spec if I remember correctly, Seymour Duncans etc. Not 100% on that :)
Between this the sire s7 and s3 which would you recommend? Honestly I just care about the strat ish kinda tones everything else is irrelevant.
I’ve had my HSS Nick Johnston for a few months. My only issues were 1) the pickups were too high, causing tone and tuning issues and 2) I kept breaking the high E string until I had the bridge filed. Since then, it’s been fantastic and truly a great guitar for the money.
High pickups. Lower them. Tighten the screws. Done.
@@bluwng that’s what I did….
could you review the USA custom shop version of the Nick Johnston? I've tried it and I think it blows this one out of the water
For $2600 I would hope so! The real question is at less than half the price of that guitar what mods need to be done to get this one to feel, sound and play like it's expensive counterpart and still be affordable?
Beautiful guitar. Mine sounds great but it falls out of tune constantly seems the nut wasn’t cut correctly
So now you know who Nick Johnston is!
Only wish they rolled the Fingerboard on this schecter, the edges are a little abrupt. It's a fantastic sounding and playing guitar.
Compare cort x700 duality vs Sire s7 vs scheter nick johnston
Hey man, what's the reverb you're using? Helix? It's so sexy creamy. Great playing!
Cordy! What do you think/feal about the pickups in this guitar? Have you played any open chord stuff with a bit more gain on it?
The pickups seem pretty reasonable - nothing mind blowing, but functional and not in need of replacing in my opinion
@@johnnathancordy 💯🙏🏻
How is the tone compared to the Silver Sky ?
Had one as well it wouldn't stay in tune high e string even after a luthier set up. Had to change the string tree the saddles and replace locking tuners and bang it was excellent! Wish I had kept it but it was fairly heavy for my back . Great video !!
Hello, which is a better guitar? Schecter nick johnston or sire s7?
Guitar sounds great but Your playing is stellar
Yamaha revstar rss02t Indonesia is a hell of a guitar
Played one today and from a construction/craftsmanship viewpoint, it blows away the PRS SS SE.
Easily.
Get familiar with Nick Johnston he’s amazing.
Absolutely a amazing composer and player
second that! Start with Remarkably Human. What an amazing record!
Review the PT Telecaster schecter pleaseeee
Dear owners of this guitar, is the fretboard lacquered? What's the size of frets, is it stainless steel?
Try a new sterling sr50. Stingray HH. Been dying to hear someone competent get their hands on one.
would there be a lot of hum if I were to put high gain on?
No more than any other single coil guitar - I'd be using a noise gate with really high gain tones!
Check out Cort's stuff - g280 select, g290 fat, g300 pro...
Tbh g300 pro looks like a killer deal atm, basically and Ibanez az242 but 500euros cheaper, or you could call it "a poor man's Suhr/Pete Thorn".
Chapman ML1 pro is in the same ballpark of the Schecter NJ if I'm not mistaken, but has somewhat better specs on paper...
Btw how does the Schecter stack up against the Sire S7 in h2h comparison? *I know the S7 is a bit more vintage* - but overall QC, hw and tone-wise covering different genres?
Do these (s7/Schecter NJ) perhaps need a pickup change? I really find it hard to shell out 300e more for a Schecter NJ when compared to what Sire S7 has to offer.
Will try to hunt out some Corts - the Schecter and Sire are quite similar to be honest, I think the trem hardware is identical. Main differences are in the neck, in terms of tones both are a bit more bassy than an actual strat
One thing that puts me off the NJ is the near invisible brass fretboard inlays.
I have a fantastic guitar equipped similarly and I found out I wasn’t so good on guitar when playing in the dark and couldn’t see 5hose inlays.
Makes a fantastic guitar useless for me.
For me personally the dots on the fretboard side are more critical than what's on the fretboard, but yeh on the roasted fretboard the fretboard inlays aren't prominent
Is the patch in the outro in the pack? If so what's the name?
Do you ever get to play any Mexican weddings over there. Those were always may favorite. Kinda like Italian but with tacos and tequila. Reminds me in glad I don't drink anymore. That NJ owns that price range. Did you end up sending both of the green plastic guitars back?
I sold one of the greens, and sent one back yeh
Always thinking of getting this Schecter or a Fender Classic Player (custom shop designed with 69 Pickups) used. Any idea how they compare or vary from each other?
Funny you should ask. I have the exact two guitars. I have the shoreline gold. 69s with the RW middle pu.
Pickups I don't care for since you c an change them but the neck is what I try to find comfort in. Neck on the fender CP is more thicker (soft V I believe) than the shecter. Shecter feels "too" thin for me. My hands are used to thick baseball bats with jumbo frets. At least the shecter does have JUMBO FRETS.
Pus in the schecter has definitely more prestige and modern tone.
Hope that helps!
Oh. I have the HSS configuration on the schecter
@@dkijc thanks, that is a help. The neck thickness is one factor that keeps me from buying the Schecter. I have quite a big neck on a HSS Partscaster I am playing most of the time and like it. I think I tend to the CP more at the moment
@@danielcook3361 Hey bro, I'm so sorry! I meant to reply earlier but it slipped my mind. I recently got a chance to play the Nick Johnston USA custom model in Guitar Center.... One of THE best guitars I've ever held in my hands!!! Thick neck and resonant!! I know it's in a totally different price range but something you should try and drool over haha
@@dkijc thanks, maybe I will try one. I wonder why they use such different neck profiles on USA vs Indonesia Model...
You need to check out an Ernie Ball RS Cutlass!
I just bought one with a gotoh tremolo and Gotoh locking tuners.
How do you like it?
The neck feels great. Tuning and intonation is spot on. I have taken it to a luthier to do a detailed set up. I am getting some intermittent popping from the pickups.
This guitar though has some character and it a unique voice. It is a great complement to my PRS se Starla which is a great little find. I also have a Ibanez Headless Quest Qx 54 which is a clean tone monster and very dynamic.
When I get the Nick back, I will fill you in.
Since then, I have sold all 3 guitars.😮
I never left
What's the weight John?
After dumping Fender and their marginal upgrades; AP2 with no locking tuners? DUMPSTER FIRE 😂 now onto this Schecter! 😁
What model is it ?
The real question PRS or Schecter?
The Schecters I’ve owned have been great guitars. But the truth is, at my skill level, that just means that they play easy (string relief and neck profile), they don’t have major issues (no buzz, no intonation problems), and they sound good (decent pickups).
truly skilled guitarists can get their job done on any guitar that meets those requirements.
It doesn't really change the fact that not every guitar is the same....Sure an Ibanez AZES could absolutely get the job done, and I'm absolutely not a snob about this stuff, but it's also good to know which companies are making actually good/great instruments at various price ranges?
@@johnnathancordy of course. my point was mainly that more skill doesn't need a better instrument. you're still just looking for a well playing guitar.
Why are so many youtubers gutting this guitar and changing-out the pickups, bridge and pots? Is it really that bad?? Sounds pretty great to me.
I've heard the tuners are no good and the Vibrato doesn't stay in tune when used
