How can you start a mushroom farm in your garage? It's really not that hard! In this video we look at three ways this can be done. Starting from the easiest, and moving to the most in depth.
Mushroom Businesses and small farms have been popping up all over the world, people realizing that growing mushrooms for the local community is a rewarding and profitable endeavour.
For the easy method of starting a small mushroom farm, you just need to build a mushroom fruiting chamber, and buy ready to fruit blocks! This can be used to get started, and required minimum setup. All you need to do is build a fruiting chamber. This can be used to test the market, and see if you have what it takes to grow and sell delicious edible mushrooms.
The medium method involves building an additional preparation area, clean room/lab, and an incubation area. These are all pretty straightforward, and once setup you can easily create your own blocks. For this method we just buy spawn for a reputable vendor, as it removes the need for culture and spawn management.
For the final form, we will start producing our own spawn. This required a larger setup, and you will need to manage your own cultures, and ensure you have a constant supply of spawn. We have only touched lightly on this in the video, and if you choose to get this far there are lots of video out there about creating spawn.

That outro killed me :))
That outro was the most hype edit ever I'm dying 😂
Just keeping you on your toes ;)
*I really want to do this, I want this to be my new career!*
1- I can build laminar flow hood to any size I want (I learned). I have a small one right now and it works very well.
2- I now have experience and knowledge in cloning mushrooms, growing cultures in a petri dish, inoculating grain, producing mushroom spawn, I have experience in practice and I succeeded. Zero contamination.
3- I can use a device that can adjust the temperature and humidity, but I will definitely need an air conditioner.
4- I still do not have full practical knowledge of subbase and composting. I have to find an economical solution for preparing compost.
5- I have to find a place in the local market.
6- I have to visit someone around me who prepares and does this job, including compost. But it is not available around me, I probably should travel out of town.
7- I need money, and I really spent all my money learning about laminar flow hood and other things. I still need resources for research and development, I think I need to find resources. I also have a job but I want to do my own job. I want a profession and profession means insurance.
then you need to hire a lawyer and figure out your local requirements / federal requirements in regards to licensing, inspection, etc and have your lawyer lay out a step by step process that you should follow, then once all that is set up along with business liability insurance proceed to go to local restaurants, farmers markets, etc and talk with the chef and offer them a free sample with a business card tell them hit me up if you want a few lbs , network as best as you can and try to upscale your yields constantly.
???? profit

Beautiful personality mate. Makes your videos that much more enjoyable☺️
Thanks mate!

That ending bro. Awesome work, love it.
Glad you enjoyed it
Love the video editing 😎
Classy. Dig your style 😎
Thank you very much.
I continuously see mushrooms extremely similar to the ones in the thumbnail growing near a tree stump in my backyard. What the hell are they, super hard like a rock !
always great content!
Thanks!
Wow trippy ending man !!!
Most definitely the best mushroom channel on CZcams. Compared to this guy everybody else is either a snooze-fest or they give you only half of the info you need (or mostly both and a third of the info). Honorable mention goes to Home mycology for the lab stuff though.
Much respect to Oak and Spore Mushroom Farm: you guys inspired me to grow mushrooms. I am very busy so its been slow, but I will start selling kits in two months or so (still doing some R&D).
I have kits instead of mushrooms because I did the complete opposite as you suggest and started with a small lab. But this is only because I am a complete lab rat and the mushrooms was a most excellent excuse to make a cyberpunkish lab.
Cheers mate! It's honestly great to see people starting down a different mushroom path, instead of just going to usual 'grow mushrooms, sell mushrooms, profit'
I hope your kits are a blast! Share me a link to your webpage once its complete!
Big props from montreal canada

Inspiring video mate. We’re looking to start growing our own mushrooms. :)
Great content dude!

Aloha from Hawaii! Thanks for making these great videos. I am just starting out, in a building that is 40' long and 10' wide. My question is, please, within this space, what size should I make the incubation and fruiting chambers, respectively? Thanks very much
Nice ! ))
Thanks!
Best outro haha 😂
I love the mom cameo lol
classic mums.
Thank you. Awesome video! Do you recommend getting started with the easy method and then work your way up to the in-depth method over time or should you just put all your time and energy into the in-depth method from the start? what would you do now knowing all that you know? thanks so much
You have jumped alot. Great progress.
Thanks! slowly getting bigger and bigger!
Could you do a video explaining how you built your fruiting chamber? I'm curious what the walls are made of and if you built it by hand to fit inside your garage. Thanks for all of the great videos :)
I am building a new fruiting chamber soon, and will definatly make videos about it
this is my first business idea i hope i can find sales and afford all of this
dubstep mycology was certainly a new one :D
I'm here to pioneer...
Awesome content mate- looking forward to more in depth videos on your fruiting room controllers! Also, what did you make your chamber out of? Looks very unique

Nice one bro! Love the videos!! More informative and down to earth that a lot of the lofty wankers on here! Legend!
easily hard!
I dont knwo if this worlds can conbine, but the video idea is great!
Haha thanks!
Hi ,Nice video, very genius idea , if I understood correctly, you heat the fruiting room with hot steam coming from the heated water in the tank ? is it wright ? what is the switch-on interval of the vaporization ?
Great intro hahah! Also, why do so many people cut that tiny hole in the front? Doesn't it severely limit the growth? It seems to me ( I know nothing) that the more surface area exposed the more that will grow.... you have the huge block and this tiny little window to grow out of. Explain it please. Obviously I'm missing something.
Is there a required temperature for the fruiting room/chamber? Or the extractor fan is enough?
I FREAKING LOVE HIM
Pretty much seen all your vids now and have loved the journey. Awesome to see you are doing so well with it. Inspiring. Quick question. What would you say the ratio of incubation room to grow room space needs to be. Thanks heaps.
Depends on what species. If it's shaiitake you need a lot more incubation than growing. It it's oyster you need about 1:2 incubation to growing.
@@OakandSpore legend. Thanks
Been wanting to start a mushroom farm myself, already have some experience working with agar and in a clean environment from other projects , just need to get one actually set up and I plan to be off!
Go for it mate! Its a hard road, but definitely rewarding :D

NIIIIICEEEEEE TTUUUUUUUNNNNNNEEE
Lmao gawd I subscribed from the outtro
Haha thanks!
After having messed around with agar plates, grain spawn, substrate recipes and such. I decided to take the plunge and go all in with a former collogue. So we started a company, found a somewhat suitable space and are now renovating it so that it'll fit our needs. We are aiming to have enough space for 200 (192 to be precise) 4 kg fruiting blocks simultaneously and hope to have our first harvest and sale mid march (we don't fully take over the space until January). Our hope is to automatize the farm enough so that we have time and resources to research currently uncultivatable mushrooms, such as chanterelle, porcini, truffle and morel (somewhat not cultivatable).
I just wanted to say thank you; You and Southwest Mushrooms are definitely the two CZcams channels that have been most helpful in the pre-start-up phase. And I thoroughly enjoy your dry Australian-style humour.
Thanks Bjorn! My advice, avoid chanterelle, porcini, and truffle, as they are mycorrhizal, and you will need to grow them on the roots of oak trees. 192 blocks for a fruiting chamber is about the size of mine. On a 3 week cycle this is 64 blocks per week. If you get 750g first flush, and 500g second flush, you'll be harvesting around 70kg of mushrooms each week. Good starting amount! I only do between 30-50kg per week. If there is two of you I would plan early for a fast expansion. Make provisions to double or even triple fruiting area.
@@OakandSpore Thanks for the advice, but it's the fact that everyone says to stays away that makes them interesting. We have a few ideas that might enable us to get around the root issue. My education as a process engineer and my colleague being a university professor with 15 years experience in membrane technology should give us at least a somewhat fighting chance of breaking the code.
We are hoping to effectives the space enough to grow 150 kg per week, as that should cover most of the needs of the higher-end restaurants in the city (Aarhus, DK). There are other types to sell to as well, but the restaurants should be the easiest and most stable market to get into.
Thanks again for the advice and the overall nice reply
Before I started the mushroom farm I was very close to purchasing a piece of land to start a truffle orchard. The purchase failed on due diligence when we noted a strong wind would move through the valley. Anyway I always wanted to grow truffle, so if you do crack the code let me know! I always wanted to try growing an oak tree infected with black truffle in hydroponics, and see if I could get the fruit body to form that way...
@@OakandSpore I definitely will, but expect 3-5 years until we have any definitive results on that front.
is there a product link to the bins you use to store the fresh mushrooms in?
Ηello from Greece. All of your videos are great and really helps. I have one question for you. Which material can replace plastic for blocks? If i start a mushroom farm I would like to minimize the usage of plastic for eco reasons.
Thanks in advance!
i have wondered the same thing. Did you find any answers?
New sub!! I want to sart growing mushrooms in my garage too =)
Do you open the top of the bags before colonizing spawn bags?
Hello from California thanks for your great vd my question is do you have workshop classes I would like to attend one.
Hello got a question, could one use Soy Meal due to its High Protein Content as a Alternative to Soy Hulls without risking the culture? Best Regards
Great information thank you!
It seems that pine wood pellets works good for you! Did you found any problem with them?
Thanks again man!
Not at all, they work brilliantly.
@@OakandSpore that's amazing info, i have always been under the impression pine doesn't work for anything but phoenix oysters! what have you grown out so far using the pine chips, if i may ask?
Hello. Have you tried lucerne straws for compost?
I'll do it.
Oak and spores mate what ur using to control ur humidity? I saw ur video about inkbird failure.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Vaisala humidity probe and a home made automation controller
Which reputable vendor are you buying your Spahn through?
Im wanting to grow some wood ear - bloody nice in a broth any advice I just got some plates from raglan the usual lions mane oyster and Stropharia
Does the fruiting chamber have to be at a specific temp? I am in Florida, so no real cold to deal with but we do have some intense heat. I'd love to start with the easy method and work my way to the other stuff.
yes, I try to keep mine around 18c.
Well someone must've frequented the psychedelic rave scene once upon a time based on that outro
What is the impact of using wood shelving in fruiting and incubation rooms with respect to its potential for inducing mold growth?
Its treated, so doesn't really get much mold.
THIS IS MUSHROOOOMMMMS
How is the yield of pine/soy compared to hwfp/soy?
Hi.
How much Kwh do you spent on cooling?
i have a question. im in a tropical climate. i have an insulated roof. but wood cieling. the room is walled with cloth. no ventilation. i wet the room but when the water disapears it becomes hot inside
That's not helpful!
Hi oak and spore great content, does softwood pellets work for lions mane. And do softwood pellets create a problem with yeild I am having the same problem as you difficult to source hardwood.
I have used softwoof for Coral Tooth, Lions mane's cousin. We don't have Lions Mane in NZ, so I will never be able to try growing it unfortunately (it's a banned import)
Thank you for your time
What about temperature? My garage can easy get 80+F in the summer
Hey, excellent video! Do you have any average numbers on yield? Like, how much in a year, or a month, with each setup?
It all depends on how good you are at growing really. I sell my production blocks and expect 1kg mushroom off each block.
@@OakandSpore You sell your production from the blocks? Looks like there is meant to be a for in the sentence? I will continue on google with my research on this topic. Thanks for answering, very helpful!!
I have a question, I have a hard time finding oak pellets, almost everyone here sells silver fir pellets .. can I use it or is it not good?
I use pinus radiata pellets exclusively for oysters
@@OakandSpore thank you, i have the LC of the king oyster, i am going to try a small bag of the pellet from silver fir (i think yours in my place is more rare than the oak.. lol) i let you know how go my test.. THX for the quick answer and for all the nice video you have made. Hugs from italy
Any thoughts on using an indoor grow tent for a fruiting room?
They work, but hard to clean.
Gotta love that kiwi humour
Thanks mate! Nothing beats a good yarn and a laugh.
@@OakandSpore
Too right
Wait, you are one of the first youtubers I've seen who is using softwood pellets. So I assume they work as good as hardwood if you grow commercially?
For some species they are fine
Great info again, did i hear you say Pine Pellets? I thought Pine was a no-no?
No! Pine is defiantly usable with a lot of oyster species!
When you say you use soy hulls and softwood fuel pellets to make your raw substrate mix, did you mean to say hardwood pellets? I read online that softwood pellets won't be suitable for oyster cultivation. I hope they are as they are all I have available in my area. Thanks for the informative video :)
No, I use soft wood. Specifically pine pellets. They work great. I think the anti fungal turpens get removed or destroyed during the pellitisation process.
I have the same issue with only having access to pinewood pellets. I didn't realize it was pinewood the first time I used it, which coincidentally was for oyster, and it turned out perfectly fine.
What size is your fruiting chamber?
it was 12m2, the new ones are 40m2
