    How can you start a mushroom farm in your garage? It's really not that hard! In this video we look at three ways this can be done. Starting from the easiest, and moving to the most in depth.
    Mushroom Businesses and small farms have been popping up all over the world, people realizing that growing mushrooms for the local community is a rewarding and profitable endeavour.
    For the easy method of starting a small mushroom farm, you just need to build a mushroom fruiting chamber, and buy ready to fruit blocks! This can be used to get started, and required minimum setup. All you need to do is build a fruiting chamber. This can be used to test the market, and see if you have what it takes to grow and sell delicious edible mushrooms.
    The medium method involves building an additional preparation area, clean room/lab, and an incubation area. These are all pretty straightforward, and once setup you can easily create your own blocks. For this method we just buy spawn for a reputable vendor, as it removes the need for culture and spawn management.
    For the final form, we will start producing our own spawn. This required a larger setup, and you will need to manage your own cultures, and ensure you have a constant supply of spawn. We have only touched lightly on this in the video, and if you choose to get this far there are lots of video out there about creating spawn.

    *I really want to do this, I want this to be my new career!*
    1- I can build laminar flow hood to any size I want (I learned). I have a small one right now and it works very well.
    2- I now have experience and knowledge in cloning mushrooms, growing cultures in a petri dish, inoculating grain, producing mushroom spawn, I have experience in practice and I succeeded. Zero contamination.
    3- I can use a device that can adjust the temperature and humidity, but I will definitely need an air conditioner.
    4- I still do not have full practical knowledge of subbase and composting. I have to find an economical solution for preparing compost.
    5- I have to find a place in the local market.
    6- I have to visit someone around me who prepares and does this job, including compost. But it is not available around me, I probably should travel out of town.
    7- I need money, and I really spent all my money learning about laminar flow hood and other things. I still need resources for research and development, I think I need to find resources. I also have a job but I want to do my own job. I want a profession and profession means insurance.

      then you need to hire a lawyer and figure out your local requirements / federal requirements in regards to licensing, inspection, etc and have your lawyer lay out a step by step process that you should follow, then once all that is set up along with business liability insurance proceed to go to local restaurants, farmers markets, etc and talk with the chef and offer them a free sample with a business card tell them hit me up if you want a few lbs , network as best as you can and try to upscale your yields constantly.
      ???? profit

    Most definitely the best mushroom channel on CZcams. Compared to this guy everybody else is either a snooze-fest or they give you only half of the info you need (or mostly both and a third of the info). Honorable mention goes to Home mycology for the lab stuff though.
    Much respect to Oak and Spore Mushroom Farm: you guys inspired me to grow mushrooms. I am very busy so its been slow, but I will start selling kits in two months or so (still doing some R&D).
    I have kits instead of mushrooms because I did the complete opposite as you suggest and started with a small lab. But this is only because I am a complete lab rat and the mushrooms was a most excellent excuse to make a cyberpunkish lab.

    After having messed around with agar plates, grain spawn, substrate recipes and such. I decided to take the plunge and go all in with a former collogue. So we started a company, found a somewhat suitable space and are now renovating it so that it'll fit our needs. We are aiming to have enough space for 200 (192 to be precise) 4 kg fruiting blocks simultaneously and hope to have our first harvest and sale mid march (we don't fully take over the space until January). Our hope is to automatize the farm enough so that we have time and resources to research currently uncultivatable mushrooms, such as chanterelle, porcini, truffle and morel (somewhat not cultivatable).
    I just wanted to say thank you; You and Southwest Mushrooms are definitely the two CZcams channels that have been most helpful in the pre-start-up phase. And I thoroughly enjoy your dry Australian-style humour.

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 3 lety +2

      Thanks Bjorn! My advice, avoid chanterelle, porcini, and truffle, as they are mycorrhizal, and you will need to grow them on the roots of oak trees. 192 blocks for a fruiting chamber is about the size of mine. On a 3 week cycle this is 64 blocks per week. If you get 750g first flush, and 500g second flush, you'll be harvesting around 70kg of mushrooms each week. Good starting amount! I only do between 30-50kg per week. If there is two of you I would plan early for a fast expansion. Make provisions to double or even triple fruiting area.

    • @bjoernsk85
      @bjoernsk85 Před 3 lety

      @@OakandSpore Thanks for the advice, but it's the fact that everyone says to stays away that makes them interesting. We have a few ideas that might enable us to get around the root issue. My education as a process engineer and my colleague being a university professor with 15 years experience in membrane technology should give us at least a somewhat fighting chance of breaking the code.
      We are hoping to effectives the space enough to grow 150 kg per week, as that should cover most of the needs of the higher-end restaurants in the city (Aarhus, DK). There are other types to sell to as well, but the restaurants should be the easiest and most stable market to get into.
      Thanks again for the advice and the overall nice reply

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 3 lety

      Before I started the mushroom farm I was very close to purchasing a piece of land to start a truffle orchard. The purchase failed on due diligence when we noted a strong wind would move through the valley. Anyway I always wanted to grow truffle, so if you do crack the code let me know! I always wanted to try growing an oak tree infected with black truffle in hydroponics, and see if I could get the fruit body to form that way...

    What is the impact of using wood shelving in fruiting and incubation rooms with respect to its potential for inducing mold growth?

      Its treated, so doesn't really get much mold.

    Hi oak and spore great content, does softwood pellets work for lions mane. And do softwood pellets create a problem with yeild I am having the same problem as you difficult to source hardwood.

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 3 lety

      I have used softwoof for Coral Tooth, Lions mane's cousin. We don't have Lions Mane in NZ, so I will never be able to try growing it unfortunately (it's a banned import)

    Hey, excellent video! Do you have any average numbers on yield? Like, how much in a year, or a month, with each setup?

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 2 lety

      It all depends on how good you are at growing really. I sell my production blocks and expect 1kg mushroom off each block.

      @@OakandSpore You sell your production from the blocks? Looks like there is meant to be a for in the sentence? I will continue on google with my research on this topic. Thanks for answering, very helpful!!

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 3 lety

      No! Pine is defiantly usable with a lot of oyster species!

    When you say you use soy hulls and softwood fuel pellets to make your raw substrate mix, did you mean to say hardwood pellets? I read online that softwood pellets won't be suitable for oyster cultivation. I hope they are as they are all I have available in my area. Thanks for the informative video :)

    • @OakandSpore
      @OakandSpore  Před 3 lety

      No, I use soft wood. Specifically pine pellets. They work great. I think the anti fungal turpens get removed or destroyed during the pellitisation process.

      I have the same issue with only having access to pinewood pellets. I didn't realize it was pinewood the first time I used it, which coincidentally was for oyster, and it turned out perfectly fine.
