  • Hi guys! Here are my two cents for when your Mercruiser engines stall, hesitates, backfire, and stumble Pretty much any performance-related issues, we are going to talk about the fuel pump also the flame arrester also the distributor, and wires and spark plugs, let’s recover a few scenarios!

This video was helpful and gave me some ideas. I liked your comment that the coil may be bad if the engine runs well until warmed up.

The spark arrested is usually not the problem ☆ my boat ran perfectly ☆ later on I checked the spark arrestor for being dirty * it was not only dirty,, it was totally clogged up * it took me over an hour to clean it up ,using gasoline to clean it ☆ gess what? It didn't run any better than before .... but it did run perfectly as it did before 😊😊😊😊 however, I recommend cleaning it now and then ☆ it will make you feel better to .....

You probably meant to say that the Correct timing is 8 degrees BEFORE TDC not after Top Dead Center on #1 cylinder.
Thanks for these very informative videos.

My inboard mercruiser 228 runs great when cold, but after one hour, engine hot , stalls, in gear, but idles fine. Revs up fine when Not in gear. Put in gear and engine dies. Jerry

Hello my friend! It sounds like a ignition coil to me, when they are going bad they act exactly like that, works fine when it’s cold but once they warm up they don’t deliver the same amount of voltage but the engine runs fine under low load but as soon as you ask a little more she hesitates. I would for sure put a new ignition coil in and I don’t know if you have a mechanical fuel pump that is run by the water pump shaft, if so it’s supposed to have gear lube inside of the compartment, if it runs dry it can cause the fuel pump to vapor lock because it warms up too much. On my opinion if it’s not the ignition coil it’s going to be vapor lock so then insulating your fuel lines and fuel tanks does the trick and as for my boats manual you should always run the blowers under cruising speeds ;-) thank you for watching my friend and please let us know what you find

hey there brother my boat sea pro 22 w/ a mercruiser 5.7 thunderbolt has the identical issues runs fine when on trailer but when she gets underload she dies and wont start back up for awhile. i did how ever change the ignition coil but no change i was thinking vapor lock and check the fuel vent she was clear. if i pull the pump do i have to drain the tank? i also live in Ft. lauderdale so im tring to cruise the south with ya.

@@tylermulkey330 Hey, what’s up bud you live on the promised land too huh lol. I hope you figure out what’s going on with the boat The weather has been great! A worn-out distributor cap can cause higher RPM problems like you’re describing which runs great on the trailer or with no load but as soon as you ask a little more she stumbles and dies, vapor lock could still be your issue too because vapor lock is not just related to the vents for the fuel tank but also fuel will boil inside of the fuel lines and cause a vapor lock, especially on the stretch of fuel line that runs on top of the engine from the fuel pump and the carburetor also vapor lock can occur inside of the fuel pump especially if is a mechanical fuel pump you Gotta make sure that you have enough lube to keep the shaft lubed or the fuel pump will overheat and vapor lock, always running the blowers help! try putting a new distributor cap a new fuel pump and go for a run, on my opinion that should put you really close to what is going on. Let us know what you find bud! 👍

mercruiser 4.3 engine stall when RPM pass about 1200. cleaned the carburetor already, run it without the flame arrestor, still the same. no backfire. how to check if it's fuel pump issue or the ignition coil? want to know how to test these items before buying it. thanks.

    • @Cruisingthesouth
      @Cruisingthesouth  Před 13 dny +2

Hey my friend, thank you for the comment. I really appreciate it. If a Mercruiser 4.3 engine stalls when RPMs exceed 1200 and the carburetor has been cleaned, there are a few possible causes to consider, including a fuel pump issue or an ignition coil problem. Here's how to test these components to determine which one might be the issue..
      Fuel pump test:
To test the fuel pump, you'll need to check for fuel pressure. One way to do this is by using a fuel pressure gauge. Connect the gauge to the fuel rail or fuel filter and turn the key to the "on" position without starting the engine. The fuel pressure should read between 3-6 psi at idle and 6-8 psi at full throttle. If the fuel pressure is low, it could indicate a problem with the fuel pump.
Another way to test the fuel pump is by listening for the sound of the pump when you turn the key to the "on" position. You should hear a strong, steady humming sound coming from the pump. If the sound is weak or intermittent, it might indicate a problem with the pump.
      Ignition coil test:
To test the ignition coil, you'll need to check for spark at each cylinder. You can use a spark plug tester to do this. Remove the spark plugs, connect the tester to each plug, and crank the engine. The tester should produce a strong, consistent spark at each cylinder. If the spark is weak or intermittent, it might indicate a problem with the ignition coil.
Another way to test the ignition coil is by checking for continuity. You can do this by using a multimeter to test the primary and secondary windings of the coil. The primary winding should have a resistance of 1-2 ohms, while the secondary winding should have a resistance of around 10,000 ohms. If the resistance is outside of these ranges, it might indicate a problem with the coil.
Let me know what you find out my friend, also a couple other spots that could cause problems. I’ll give you an example no longer ago one of my engines started to lose power gradually to the point where one engine was way stronger than the other, and then all the sudden I started having high RPM issues, after chasing my tail for a very long time turned out that my exhaust elbows was partially clogged up by the very tip, I didn’t really think that it could clog up like that but it does.
Also, a little trick that I use chasing down a fuel problems is a little glass filter that you can add before your fuel pump and after to see if you have air leaks anywhere., Remember that before the fuel pump is a vacuum Side of the pump after the pump is the pressure side of the pump so before the fuel pump issues, you will see bubbles in the line and after the fuel pump you would see fuel dripping
Also, I know that this goes without saying because it’s usually the first thing that people will tell you to look for, but make sure that the vent for the fuel tank is not clogged up. Also, the fuel pick up tube inside of the tank are notorious to crack or develop small pinhole leaks or that screen on the very tip of it gets clogged up, I hope this helps at all my friend once again thank you for the question
