- Many people experience chronic shoulder pain - and their are many causes of chronic shoulder pain, as detailed here: bit.ly/zBqA8b. There are also many treatment options, such as minimally invasive shoulder replacement, shoulder resurfacing and reverse shoulder replacement surgery. San Francisco patient Chip Eady talks about his experience at CPMC getting a total shoulder replacement.
I had reverse shoulder replacement surgery in Nov.2014; flew to Florida from Canada on Dec. 3 and rehab. took place in a pool with a waterproof sling. By three months I was able to go back to Zumba classes ( I am 67 years old) I think the surgeon's skill is the main factor; also keeping moving. C. Catzman

Great presentation Chip.
Thank you Chip. Good tip to consult with a physical therapist BEFORE having the surgery, let them know what's coming.
Great to know about the possibility of being pain free.
Looking forward to my reverse shoulder replacement next month to be rid of the pain and lack of motion of which you speak. Maybe I'm weird, but I 'enjoyed' watching a few of the actual replacement surgeries on CZcams. Hubby watched part of one with me and asked me if I really wanted to go through with it. Yep! I can stand the pain, but just as the speaker indicated, after 12 years of being stoic, moving less, gaining weight, I'm ready for a new lease on life. At 74 it's time for a change! Thank you for sharing your experience.
Good to hear this from a patient perspective. Specially as someone else who has constant shoulder pain from arthritis (bone-on-bone) condition.
Both Arms of Mine have torn rotator cuff that are in such bad shape they both need total replacement I'm scheduled January 7th for my first replacement
Thank you Chip. Today I went in for what I thought was a rotator cuff repair surgery and was told you need a replacement. To say I am numb by all there is to consider is putting it mildly. I get the long term pain and the depression that accompanies it. You have helped me when you mentioned taking control over my life. May you live a happy and healthy life and long life. Blessings.
This was so helpful! Chip said so many encouraging thoughts that are helping me stay the course and not put this off.

I was due to have my left shoulder replaced last march. Instead I bought
a Harley.. Yeah My wife thought that was a real SMART move. I moved it
to this December then thought...MRI, pre op, post op, Possible
infection, 6 weeks in a sling, sleeping in a lazy Boy, physical
therapy..Etc
Hey at 69 you're suppose to feel like crap. I'll suck it
up and ride till the pain becomes unbearable, or till grandma makes a
left turn in front of me..
I have to wonder if this patient is the norm or the exception? I had shoulder replacement surgery Nov 2010 and I have more pain and discomfort now than I did before...less range or motion as well. Living with such horrible cronic pain is ruining my life.
I had complete shoulder replacement surgery a year ago today. It is great, back to normal and I’m 78
@@maryciccone7764 you replied a post I made 7 years ago. Since then I had to have a total two staged revision of that shoulder replacement - was a long hospital stay and two surgeries and I am no better off today than I was 7 years ago.
@@valaskin8600 I feel for you Val. Have you had a reverse shoulder replacement performed? Have you considered using a different surgeon(s)?
@@kev8839 I have since had a two stage revision of my first shoulder replacement. It was a long process, after stage one (removing of the implants and treating for possible infection) I was in the hospital for a month. Waited another month to have the second stage done. This was a reverse replacement. Felt great for about a year and now I am back to very little range of motion and pain.......I have given up and will just live with the discomfort. Where I live there is very little choice of surgeons who do this procedure.
@@valaskin8600 Wow, you’ve really been through hell. I can see why you don’t want to take anymore chances. We have some very good shoulder surgeons in the area where I live (Manatee/Sarasota) but there’s still a chance you may have complications even if you use the best surgeon, I suppose. It’s tough living in pain and having a loss of mobility. I hope you can find some relief.
Too bad he had a stemmed prothesis--limitations, chances of breaks. Reverse Shoulder is ojnly for those with no rotator cuff. Stemless Total Shoulder is THE state of the Art. 2023
