Eating Bun Rieu in Da Nang 2024

  • While Pho is understandably Vietnam's most famous soup export, there are many other treasures to behold when you dig a little deeper. One of our favourites in Bún Riêu, which has a tomato tinged crab broth and noodles (depending on what part of the country you're in) of different descriptions, a variety of proteins that some might describe as being "interesting", and crab dumplings that resemble what would happen if a matzoh ball and a crab had offspring. It's absolutely delicious, and a terrific alternative to ordering pho. Not a lot of North American Vietnamese places have this on the menu, but if you see it, dig in!

      The reason why we came to Vietnam was to explore the food as thoroughly as we could. We've been eating all over Asia for years, and even now, we get a pleasant surprise once in a while. Getting out of your comfort zone is the best part of travel!

    "Pho is so ........... last night" :-) I like coagulated blood cake, tastes a bit like liver. In fact, many European sausages have tiny blood cubes in them. I'm so impressed with your appreciation for the fermented shrimp paste (mam tom). It goes very well if you like a deep salty/savory broth.
    I lived and worked in VN for 9+ years and ate mostly VN food and got used to having a lot of vegetables with my meal. I've since moved back to the US and some time look at my meal funny as I don't see enough vegetables.

    • @Global_Feast

      Thanks for your comment! We love all of it. Snails are one of our favourites, and there’s a great snail restaurant down the block from our apartment that we plan on doing a video on soon. Funny thing though, aside from the greens that come with some dishes, we have to go out of our way to find specific vegetable dishes. Found lots of water spinach (rau) with garlic and a few
      places serving okra (which we love), but
      not much else in this neighborhood.

      What is umami?

    • @Global_Feast
      @Global_Feast  Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@trieuvy. Umami is that hard to describe "fifth taste", personified by MSG, Shiitake mushrooms, and many other ingredients. "a category of taste in food (besides sweet, sour, salt, and bitter), corresponding to the flavor of glutamates, especially monosodium glutamate."

    • @lovefilmmakingify
      @lovefilmmakingify Před 4 měsíci

      @@trieuvy. It is basically a savory sweetness that comes from seafood, meat, or cheese as opposed to sugary sweetness come from fruit or sugar cane.

    Phở 's soup is delicious from the bones, Bún Riêu 's soup is delicious from the crab. Crabs are caught in the fields, crushed and filtered to extract the crab's essence.
    Bún Riêu is more difficult to cook than Phở
