  • In 2013 in Sanford, Florida, vigilante George Zimmerman was found not guilty of the murder of 17-year-old African American Trayvon Martin. As a result, the struggle against police violence flared up under the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter and turned into one of the biggest grassroots movements in the United States. VPRO Backlight talked to co-founder Patrisse Cullors about the various forms of violence against black citizens, and why resistance is essential.

It’s not “only black lives matter” it’s “black lives matter too” noticed how I said TOO. As in black peoples lives are not expendable and they have have dignity, worth, and value as people created in God’s image and are worthy of love and respect. Saying All lives matter is a dismissive ad hoc response to ignore the damnable sin of how this country treated its Black citizens.

      Issue in the world?
Let me ask you then, do you ever think about the police brutality that exists outside your reality?
Break it down, predominantly African countries have serious issues with police brutality, but the difference is it’s black people hurting black people, why is that?
Simply because of the hierarchy put in place by ‘us,’ people. As soon as you hand a certain power to someone, almost guaranteed that somewhere down the line, someone will abuse it and someone gets hurt, America is lucky because of the education system it’s had to prevent much higher numbers in misuse of power due to uneducated people. Now take somewhere like Kenya where I grew up. Different but the same, less educated people in positions of power, ie; a lot of the police force.
Use unauthorised force at wish and injure or kill people and get away with it anyway. It has nothing to do with skin colour, most people here are preaching that you see past the skin but all you’re doing is moaning about different skin types attacking other skin types!
      It’s so boring and mundane.
it has everything to do with humanity and mankind as a whole, we all have similar traits and aspects whether you like to believe it or not, you blame white police because the police force is predominantly white people. If it had more black police, this would still happen...
people will always be flawed it’s how you decide to perceive the reality that unfolds.

Next thing I knew I was hit and press against the hood of the car by one of the police ,me holding on to his night stick as he tried to press it towards my throat. Was I enraged you bet.

Jesus and Martin Luther King jr. Say that all lives matter. If you want a base your life on God, Jesus and the Bible you need to take up your cross and follow Him. Jesus is the only savior that forgives sins and offers eternal life. Feel remorse over the evil things that you have done in your life and ask God to forgive you through Jesus Christ. As Christians we are not to devote Our Lives to spiritual agendas other than the good news of Jesus. Black lives matter is another gospel and will be condemned by Jesus when He judges. I hope to win you over to Jesus because nothing else matters in the end. God bless you all.

      @kaithall1759 Před 4 lety

However, you must consider the change in the roles of political parties that has occurred since the Civil War. The positions of the Republicans and the Democrats have flipped in many aspects. Neither party has ever truly been completely right. Also, it wasn't until about the 1980s that parties became consolidated into the Republicans being conservative and the Democrats being Liberal. It used to be that you could be a Liberal Republican and a Conservative Democrat. Blaming either part for a period of faults is a dangerous mistake that only serves to widen the gap and increase the polarization between the parties. This makes our government less effective and representative of the people, as well as making the populace more divided. Colleges do not teach that no Republicans owned any slaves prior to the Civil War for several reasons, including trying to see the nation as an organization of people rather than just parties and, you know, the fact that they have yet to see any actual factual sources that prove your assertion is correct. If you really are a true patriot who wants this country to thrive and succeed, you would rethink your adversarial view of the political parties and focus more on the importance of making sure the government remains representative of the people and does not infringe upon their rights. Also, if you really want to fight with quotations, read this one from George Washington,
“However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."
In conclusion, kindly take your argument of blaming one party over another and fuck off. You aren't educating or helping anyone, especially not United States.

This is not a very good documentary in my opinion. It basically felt like a commentary by an individual. I expected interviews with many individuals and a deeper explanation of how the movement started from different events and how that built up and congealed and perhaps a bit of a timeline type presentation (not literally but from a historical perspective). This was just an advertisement for miss Cullors and an excuse for her to preach about her particular passion. I get that was the goal but the description and title didn't do enough to make that clear.

Anger. Rage. My story. Appeals to theatrical emotion is an attempt to stir emotion over facts.
I disagree with your approach. You don't have a right steal the microphone from Bernie Sanders. He has spent a lifetime building his career. You haven't earned that position. It speaks volumes about your mindset that you think this acceptable. All people want community to work - helping to make that happen seems the only way to make this work over long haul.
Why are other races not having this issue? Irish were enslaved once, Japanese were the most hated, vilified race in the US - 50 years ago they were thrown in internment camps - now both are respected members of community.
Patterns are seen by cops just like bouncers in nightclubs. Doesn't make them racist per se. Militancy is not going to help integration. Meditation classes would be better than shouting at people about racism and "the Patriarchy", which creates a chip on their shoulder before they even start. It helps kids delay gratification and stick at things, calmly.

Clearly you were affected in some way by what you saw so I appreciate your comments because I take it as your way of entering the conversation. With that being said please allow me to challenge your perspective with the following scenario: answer truthfully, what if an illness, the should've been eradicated long ago, was now claiming a life every 28 hours in America and you found out about it not by means of any government media outlet, but by a few people on social media, would you believe it? What if instead of a few people on social media there were a hundred, would you believe it then? How about a thousand? Here's another question, what if you found out that the illness was never fully eradicated instead its existence and the lives it's claimed were covered up and millions are now dead because of it, would you be angry? Unfortunately such an illness does exist and it is an epidemic that most don't believe is real. Now the only question that remains is how far are you willing to go to learn the truth? If you truly want to know CZcams "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome" by Dr Joy DeGruy. Then check out the videos by Dr Robin DiAngelo.

I thought this was a great documentary, and I felt a lot of respect for the women who narrated (I am sorry I do not know her name). There was only one thing in the documentary that really bothered me, I am a white Canadian female, and that was the shout out in Seattle. To me, it felt like a slam to all white people, why the racist slurs to all white? Not all whites are racists, many of us march with you for your cause, especially here in Toronto. Perhaps someone can explain. As a white female I have been a victim of police brutality, so I can understand your anger and it is the most degrading thing a person can experience. I often see black people being abused in the way you are speaking of, even down to the point where they are constantly being monitored in retail stores. I cannot imagine how you must feel on a daily basis, but I am sure if I had to go through it I would feel a growing rage inside of me. I can only apologize for your circumstances and let you know that when I do see these abuses I am unbelievably outspoken about them. Your documentary was e xtremely insightful, and other than my one point I think you hit things right on the nose. They are lucky to have you as a spokesperson, you show empathy, calmness, logic and are very bright and insightful. I admire what you are doing for your people. Thank-you.

i applaud this film for addressing the problems and wanting to take some action to better all our lives. To have a conversation to change the substandard conditions that still exist. When we all come together it is a richer more loving place to be. I am so sick of seeing black men get killed for no reason and the way blacks, mexicans, anyone who isnt white, get treated like second class citizens and worse. This is such a horrible way to treat human beings. It is traumatic for those of us who value ALL lives. Please people just STOP THE MADNESS. We are just asking for decency at the very least.

VPRO you guys make awesome stuff! This documentary is also really well made, but I think that the documentaries about technology, energy and finance are way more interesting. Dont't get me wrong this is REALLY well made, but I just couldent get into it.
