      Vit, thanks for watching!
      Acetone and a few other thin liquids should do the trick. I think I originally tried this with lacqeur thinner, just didn't have any on had during this project.
      As you can see, it worked - mostly. I think there was some thing on either the laser print or on the MDF that kept if from completely transferring. Good enough.
      OH, remember, this will be a reverse image, so if your laser print reads left to right, the transfer will be a mirror image of that.

      Mr. Manley, thanks for watching and I'm glad to hear this is a channel that is worth sticking with.
      It would be nice to gather info so I would know what works and doesn't. There are likely things that turn some people off, yet others find value in. I wing it and jump into a project, hope others find it interesting, entertaining, and mostly get a bug to work on something.
      I agree, I don't pose frequently enough. This is all a hobby, and I have a lot to learn. There is a lot of time spent moving cameras, keeping my head or elbows out of the way, then there is video editing. Video editing, I find very interesting, but it takes so much time. I'm hoping to get more proficient, but currently it takes 8-10 hours to edit one episode down. That's just crazy, but fun.
      Thank you again for watching and sticking with me. I greatly appreciate you spending the time with these projects.

    Hi John, its coming together well bro. Looking forward to seeing this one finished, very interesting choice of project. We just got a new laser cutter at work, it will cut up to 6mm acrylic incredibly accurately. Shaping plastic parts or making templates from polycarbonate is now going to be a matter of drawing them on the PC and letting the laser do the work.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před rokem +1

      Brian, okay now I'm envious. Laser cutting ploycarbonate.... drool.
      You'll have any guitar at your finger tips now, there are a ton of PDF plans out there that should be easy to convert for your laser needs. Oh man, that's great!
      I have a couple acrylic/poly templates, but I only use them to make working templates which are MDF. I've been known to damage a template now and then, so MDF is a good disposable (and repairable) working template choice for me.
      The acrylic templates are nice however, I like being able to "see" exactly where and what the wood is doing when placing a template. So, I will also use the acrylic template to trace an outline, then drop the MDF template in place... I work hard, not smart at times. LOL.
      Hey, you could use the laser cutter for the fingerboard radius fixture too, cutting sided and such, oh yes. So many options.
      Thanks for watching and so cool you have access to the laser cutter!

    I'd thought you might play up the mahogany centerblock with a visible reference to a Firebird, but nope! Covered! 😂
    Loved the caulk tube tool, reminded me that I currently have my Starcaster project bridge decked with a tube of lip balm (usually for nut lube!) to take the up-tension for the back-bow remediation! 😅

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před 10 měsíci

      Mark, welcome back!
      The raised center block idea did cross my mind, but I couldn't go that direction with the mahogany block I had on hand. It was barely wide enough to catch the pickup routes, and I felt I needed at least another 1/4" on either side of the pickups to make it look good... so I just made it Strat-like.
      The caulk tube gets used quite often, you'll see it make a cameo in some of my other projects too.
      Clever use of the lip balm, use what you have!
      Take care

      P G, thanks for watching, and I'm glad to hear this is a relaxed style.
      I really do guess at what makes a good video, I try to get a lot of work into a little time slot. Often feel I'm glossing over everything. I also try to break up the bits into "chapters", about a minute or so at a shot. I want the 10 - 15 minutes to seem like 3 - 5. I want "WOW, it's over already?" not "when will he get to the point...".
      So, I should wrap this up - LOL.

    @ 13:57 you mentioned hide glue vs Titebond (PVA) glue. The hide accepts ALL finishes whereas PVA glue will not accept finish, leaving a blotchy finish.

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před rokem

      Big, thanks for watching!
      I think I was talking about a UF (urea formaldehyde resin glue) not hide glue, for the layering of the top laminates. I would imagine attempting to use a "hot" hide glue would be a problem for this type of laminating, but I've never tried hide glue in this scenario. Very limited open time with hot hide glue.
      The issue I was concerned about was that I accidentally smeared some of the UF glue onto the top figured laminate layer. I wasn't sure if it would repel future stain or dye. Luckily, the UF didn't penetrate and sanded off cleanly. The dye work I did shows no evidence of the issue - whew!
      I've used Titebond for veneer laminating and it can be tricky depending on the wood species, veneer thickness and such. Original titebond, has a very limited open/working time, can wick through some veneers and cause finish problems as you mentioned. Original titebond also lacks stiffness, so if a multi-layer veneer and form are used, the final piece won't hold its molded shape (spring back) as well as using UF glue, which gets harrrrrd and holds formed shape really well.
      I've also used Titebond cold-press glue, which has a long open time, and isn't as prone to wicking through veneer as original TB. The downside is that it can still repel some finish materials and also doesn't have the rigid shape holding characteristic of UF resin glue.
      I'm always experimenting and gradually learning.
      Thanks again for watching, hope you enjoyed the video and project series.
      Be safe and take care!

    So much fun watching these videos, they’re also a bit therapeutic if I must say. I do have one question though….. I don’t recall seeing any videos on how you came about making that drum sander. Is there a plan for that in the near future?

      Ah, the drum sander.
      I don't have any videos for that project, but I have been thinking about building a new version (version 2).
      Nothing really wrong with this one, but there would be a few adjustments made to a new build.
      If/when that day arrives, I will make a video or two.
      If you are in the mood to start building now, there are a number of YT vids of people building somewhat similar machines. Most are just a drum "thickness" sander, where my build is a thickness, a surface and a disc sander.
      Let me know if you need other info, I can find a few links of interest for you.

    I always love watching your videos. What's the goal with the multiple ply veneers on the front of the guitar? Does it give more of the illusion that there's a solid maple cap?

    • @theNextProject
      @theNextProject  Před rokem +1

      Paul, thanks for watching!
      I had looked for a nice 1/4" thick top cap piece for this project, but prices of nice caps are waaay high right now.
      I already had all the veneer I needed, so I just decided to build a +/- 1/8" thick cap from veneer. The thickness is incredibly strong due to the cross-grain arrangement of the layers, which will be perfect thickness to hold the controls.
      When the finish gets on no one will know it's a veneer at a glance.
      So, no reason other than price and the veneer being on-hand.
      Work with what ya have, make up the rest.
      Hope all is well, take care!
