You both did a great job doing a synopsis of living in GDL. I agree with all that you touched on. I live near Plaza Del Sol and I enjoy living where everything you need or want is usually within walking distance or definitely a bike ride away. Hope you continue to enjoy living in the GDL and I hope to run into you guys one day.
Welcome to Guadalajara neighbor, I came here almost 28 year's ago with my family and when they finally decided to go back to the states I decided to stay here, this city kinda grows on you. I hope you explore and enjoy all it has to offer and if you ever need any help feel free to ask.
Just spent three weeks in GDL and have been here in QRO for a week. Planning a few weeks here and a couple weeks in SMA. I liked the Americana/Arcos Vallarta neighborhood, Chapalita and Monraz areas as well. So far I like QRO better due to the less trash and overall slightly better weather. I think cost of renting/buying a property is slightly less in QRO but I need to do more research.
GDL seems more road oriented - whereas CDMX you can dip into walkable neighborhoods and avoid those 4+ lane arterial roads. I also love the more colourful buildings in CDMX.
in that respect I would say both cities are exactly the same. wonderful walkable neighborhoods in between traffic corridors. Colonia Americana would be the top example of that. in the centro you have Av Alcalde which is almost car free now after some renovations to make it more pedestrian friendly about 5 years ago. Walking is my main acrivity here and we never run out of places to go. it sounds like you must not know GDL very well.
Americans and Canadians coming to México like flocks of birds, and many of us (Mexicans) just want to get out of here due to violence, insecurity, and cartels terrifying us with shootings and other unfortunate things. I think we were born on the wrong side of the continentI'm from GDL and I'm working on my immigration process to CA. Isn't that a little ironic 😄But I see many foreigners living a happy life here and I'm glad that you can enjoy my country and see its beauty despite all the bad things. I wish you all the best in GDL ❤, stay safe 🙏.
,@@johnnyflores5954 I don't complain, Mr. Flores, if the mediocre government can't against drug cartels, what makes people believe we can ¿? I am sorry if I am not patriotic enough for staying and sacrifice my life for my country, but I am not that romantic anymore. The situation is out of control, and after being an outstanding citizen and fighting for my country, my life was almost taken by the crime here. Some of us have enough. If another beautiful country like Canada is opening doors for many of us in a legal way, I will take it without looking back.
Great video. I will be in Mexico on Monday and hopefully get my residency handled next week then decide where next to visit. Glad you are enjoying it there. My friend who has some family there love the big market that has tons of food stalls. I am also looking forward to taking the executive bus.

When I lived in GDL in 1980, it was a very clean city. People swept the street and sidewalk in front of their homes. Sadly, graffiti has proliferated since then and contributed to altering the character of many neighborhoods.
I have family in GDL and I LOVE the city, I’m from Los Angeles and have made plans to move down for a couple years to be closer to my dads side of the family. I’m really looking forward to enjoying the city. It’s so much fun and a hidden gem! 💎 great video! 👍
Welcome to Gdl. I think your most likely sensitive to the changes but may like many become accustomed to them all, good and bad. After living here almost 20 years i think I can say I have personally grown along with all it's changes. I hope you are far more settled into your life here after almost your 1st year.
We're gonna be heading there pretty soon (within the next two months). First to San Luis and then to Guadalajara. We've also heard about the petty theft. Gotta watch the camera's & laptops! Probably not much different than New York.
@@alex-wittman oh, wow! That is fantastic! We look forward to documenting it. We've started a separate channel to talk about our experiences on the trip. We'll link you the video once we post 👍
The airport is under remodelation and it is supposed have major improvements, by 2024 the airport will be almost completed. It is a very convinient airport, flights-wise is the third busiest, after Mexico City and Cancun. The bus station is probably one of the best connected in the country..I use buses fairly frequently to travel all over the country. from Guadalajara.greetings
well we are half way into 2024 and the airport is nowhere near being completed. it is a trainwreck! I've just been there twice in the last week. they almost should have built an entirely new terminal rather than trying to work in areas that are being actively used. it's taking forever and the end product is impossible to envision. however I do agree that once you get inside, it is super easy for domestic flights. I can be from the curb all the way through security in 5 minutes most times. the level of security is so lax compared to US and Canadian airports. you dont even have to show any ID or passport. as long as you have your digital boarding pass that will get you all the way to your flight!
@@RedroomStudiosTipical of Mexican constructions private and public to be finished way after the projected original date of completion. I have seen and experienced the airport since the 1970's along with the different administrations and policies applied by the governments in turn. It used to be deplorable, I am glad they are remodeling it. Lax or not, I am glad the process to board a plane is different in Mexico, I can not speak for Canada but as far as the USA, now they have an irrational number of requirements to board a plane (regarless if the flight is domestic or international), including an stupidity about to be implemented called real ID (as if the regular driver license, social security or passport was not enough), that is bordering the absurd. I understand the security challenges the USA has gone in the previous decades, but still, the process of boarding a domestic flight in the USA makes me feel that my freedon of domestic travel is being violated, like I am traveling to a foreign country, when in reality what I am doing is fly from New York to Los Angeles. They probably do not work in an entirely new terminal because of lack of land available, the airport has limited land resources and it is surrounded by ejido land, to complete the current remodelation the authorities had to fight a decades long extremely expensive litigation against one of the local ejidos.
I've been based in GDL for almost 2 years now. I have a Mexicana girlfriend that has showed me a lot of the city. I've stayed in about 8 different apartments during my time here. I've tended to stay in the centro but I've also stayed in Sta Teresita for a few months. I really like Sta Tere... it reminds me of being in a Mexican town that is inside the city. a lot of it is actually very nice but yes there are some terribly run down areas that tend to be more towards the eastern edge of that neighborhood. I loved the location because it has everything you need but you can also easily walk to Chapultepec or Midtown shopping mall. I've only really noticed the air pollution when driving south to the airport or east to Tonala. in the centro I dont find it a problem unless walking along a busy road. my girlfriend who is a local has terrible allergies especially in the spring. nothing seems to bother me though. my biggest negative is the trash and neglect and decay. for the longest time in Mexico I would tend to just ignore it but the longer I stay the more it bothers me. and it seems to keep getting worse over time. it's only the tourist areas that they try to keep clean and even those are sometimes disappointing. the amount of poverty and homelessness is staggering. yes, people here can be quite friendly and in general I have found all of Mexico to be like that. I just got back to GDL from 3 months in San Cristobal, Chiapas and I have to say, that city tops my list for friendliest people. and it's about 8 - 10 degrees cooler on average than GDL is in the spring! way too hot for me here right now.
Oh, so she's only had her phone stolen once in a year. Good. I guess. Appreciate the honest assessment, pros and cons, and would like to hear more about the stolen phone. Was it snatched from a motorcycle darting by?
@@alex-wittman Thank you for that info. Your honesty is one of the things that makes you a great content creator. Yeah she acknowledged that was careless. Because of input from multiple people I've stopped keeping anything of value in my purse. Phone, cash and cards stay in my pocket. It really helps to learn from other people's experiences.
As far as Safety : Seems pretty par for the course in big Mexican cities where foreigners are, relatively safe. Who really needs to hear these stories about local safety are all the people who are like "I'll never go to Mexico, its dangerous" or think that all of Mexico is a warzone, smh.
Good information - thanks. My husband & I are moving in less than a year (so excited!!) and I am wondering if either of you do any volunteer work or have any resources - I would really like to give back to the community once we are living there. Thanks!
Did any of my observations surprise you? I couldn't agree more with what Louise said at 10:40 as one of the worst things about living in Guadalajara 😖 Thank you, Louise, for contributing your thoughts about living in Guadalajara! Louise just celebrated her one-year anniversary of calling the city home. Make sure to watch to the end for some fun outtakes 😅
Thanks so much for this info. It's really great to get your thoughts about living in Guadalajara because I'm researching moving to MX and am particularly interested in Guadalajara. I've had a couple week long vacations in Puerto Vallarta and loved it so I'm wondering about splitting my time between Guadalajara, Manzanillo and PV so any thoughts you and Louise might have about these three cities and the pros/cons of having a moving home base would be greatly appreciated. I have to say I'm disappointed to learn about the litter problem along with the air pollution which are fairly important issues to me.
Thanks for all the great info! I was really surprised to find that Mexico still uses asbestos in lots of products (including an article about it in water tanks). It would be good to ask around, research this topic, and take precautions.
Can you find an air cleaner/filter for your apartment? I have used them for years living in Thailand and the United States to clean and filter the air in my home, particularly in the bedroom during sleep time, where it can also be white noise during sleep time in a city environment. It is a small and not necessarily expensive thing that can really improve your environment and health. Cheers.
I did a video about why I moved to Mexico (czcams.com/video/bQBfetjn0HQ/video.html), but I've never specifically talked about Spain vs. Mexico. Is that something you're interested in seeing?
@@alex-wittman I am very much interested in a contrast between Spain and Mexico. I have considered dividing my retirement time between Spain and Mexico, but with the escalating violence against foreigners in Mexico I've begun to look to other locations. Ecuador and Spain seem appealing.
I can't decide whether to move to Guadalajara or Mexico City. I have been to Mexico City many times but only once to Guadalajara. I am a 32 year old single man, so dating scene is important for me. Cost of living is my number 1 priority.
Women in GDL are far more conservative and loyal IMO…also Guadalajara is KNOWN for beautiful women. Great place to meet a beautiful, conservative woman.
I'm retired and living in Mexico. My husband and I depend on our social security payments for our Mexican income. Together, they are enough to live quite comfortably for the rest of our lives. I always wonder how young people are going to fund their lifestyle when they can no longer work if you don't recieve any social security. I assume you plan on amassing great wealth over the decades leading up to retirement, but it seems risky to me. Many young people don't even think that far ahead, I didn't until I reached 40, then really worried about it. I wish you all the best.
I was able to retire at age 51 by selling my house when prices went crazy during covid. a house that was bought new in 1972 for $27000, sold for $692k in July 2021. so many people make life so complicated instead of jumping on opportunity when it comes along.
Guadalajara sounds good but some of the CONs are a deal-breaker for me. Maybe it's a 'generational' thing... Homelessness, pollution and petty thefts are serious matters. 🤔😐 Too bad. Thanks for the info., Alex!
I'm trying to locate info on what the gay community in GDL is like. I know there's a substantial community but I'm not finding any FB or online gay groups where I can source more videos/info/contacts. There are many in Puerto Vallarta but I'm considering moving full-time to both PV and GDL. Given how pricey PV real estate is and how long/hot the summers are, I'd like to explore GDL more. Thanks!!
I was surprised how dirty and run down Guadalajara was. Of all the cities I have visited in Mexico, GDL is the dumpiest. If you want to not feel safe, go to Tonala and look at all the xeroxes of the photos of men and women who are missing/kidnapped/??? that are taped to the bus stops / telephone poles.
I live in Tonalá…i walk alone often…I walk after dark often and I’ve never had a problem…my clothes are nice…I don’t flash my jewelry though(duh) it’s ghetto in Tonalá can’t lie about that…but I’ve never felt unsafe. I’m a former gang member from little village Chicago and I was shot twice while living there….moved to Tonalá to be with my wife and I absolutely love it here..and as tatted as I am with visible gang affiliation tattoos, I’m at more of a risk than most.
@@ovh992 bro do you realize who’s the number one enemy of la eme, sureños trece(13)??? Great video !! Alex, what in your opinion, is the best way for a person to learn Spanish ?? At least enough to begin a transition to a life in Mexico. Thanks
use google translate. I slowly learned by going to restaurants and practicing what I needed to say before I went. because being able to eat is your #1 priority, so learn useful terms for ordering food first. then use one of the countless channels on youtube that will teach you Spanish for free. learn to count to 10 first. then learn the days of the week, the months, the basic greetings - buenos dias, buenas tardes, buenas noches because Mexicans always greet each other. just slowly build up what you know. I've been here almost 3 years and thats how I did it. and I still learn 2 or 3 new words each week.
I read or heard the same about Querétaro and allergies. Would you say Querétaro is the same or is the air quality better? Thank you! Great video again!
What is needed, Pensioners Temp(or Perm) Visa Mexico. Requirements and what needs to be apostilled ? I'm 12 hrs north of Detroit Consulate. Website doesnt work. Dont answer phones. I'll drive there , when open stand in line but I want to have all my papers in order. Please advise. Thanks. Excited.
The requirements for residency can be found online. Make several copies of everything it asks for. Make an appointment with the local consulate, which can be difficult but you need to start the process before you come here. We finally emailed the local consulate directly and got an appointment.
you dont need a residency to live in Mexico. I've been here 32 out of the last 36 months with no residency. I prefer to stay anonymous and not have any legal requirements or documents to fill out.
How safe do the rest of y'all feel in GDL? Been thinking of experiencing more of Mexico, maybe even for the long term, but the safety warnings get to me. I know no place is perfect. USA could also be better, so feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
For me I don’t feel safe in usa at all. I love my country even served in the military but little by little I lost ability to protect myself with spidey senses and garden variety self defense. Everything is so random here! Now if I go more than 10 miles from my nice little 55 and over community it’s a much different story in the self defense department. I’ll leave that up to you to imagine - but it is a very sad commentary on safety in usa. Do the math. How many Americans die in usa violence today. How many in Mexico. I can’t sell my stuff and get out soon enough 😭. I hope that wasn’t “too much” I rarely comment. Feel free to delete. Sorry
I would definitely take those warnings with a huge grain of salt. After almost a year in a half in Mexico City, Querétaro, and Guadalara, I've not once unsafe.
I feel safer in the US. I live in Providencia, which is one of the better neighborhoods in Guadalajara for safety. But, like Alex said, pitty theft seems to be a problem in Guadalajara. In the year I've lived here, I've never been the victim of a crime, but I've heard a few stories about cell phones being stolen. Occasionally, I will see a heavy presence of police patroling the streets. I try to be a little more vigalent on these days, just in case they know something I don't. But even though I don't feel quite as safe as I did in Arkansas (my home state), I am having a lot more fun! I think it is a fair trade off.
Frank Mason Hello My name is Frank, I was wondering if you know of a Video Editor in Guadalajara that you could recommend. Kind I long shot but I am looking to relocate and would like to hire some talented people that I can work with.
hell no! you can walk to a lot of places depending on where you are based. and the transit system here is very convenient if you need to move around the city.
Thanks! I already went and am so glad I didn’t rent a car. We mostly took ubers and private tours where ubers weren’t allowed like Chapala. I loved it!

There are some groups in Facebook and WhatsApp to help to connect foreigners in Guadalajara, it's up you if you are interested to meet locals or expats living here. Cheers !!!
The major cause of pollution in Guadalajara is caused from cars, so please if you can live without a car and use transportation that would be way much better to help the environment.
there is a massive manufacturing and chemical industry here too that spews a lot of the worst crap into the air. you can avoid it by living in the north west of the city. the factories are more in the poor areas to the south and east.
Hi! I’ve been a subscriber for a while and because of this will be going to GDL! I went to Queretaro last year also because of your channel (absolutely amazing). I liked the Americana/Arcos Vallarta neighborhood, Chapalita and Monraz areas as well. So far I like QRO better due to the less trash and overall slightly better weather. I think cost of renting/buying a property is slightly less in QRO but I need to do more research.
I’m having trouble deciding whether I prefer the weather in Querétaro or Guadalajara 🧐
Better weather? Isn’t qro colder in the winter and hotter in the summer?
Querétaro es más extremo el clima. Más frío y más calor
GDL seems more road oriented - whereas CDMX you can dip into walkable neighborhoods and avoid those 4+ lane arterial roads. I also love the more colourful buildings in CDMX.
I find from where we are in Arcos Vallarta down to Americana very walkable! CDMX is very beautiful!
in that respect I would say both cities are exactly the same. wonderful walkable neighborhoods in between traffic corridors. Colonia Americana would be the top example of that. in the centro you have Av Alcalde which is almost car free now after some renovations to make it more pedestrian friendly about 5 years ago. Walking is my main acrivity here and we never run out of places to go. it sounds like you must not know GDL very well.
Thanks for being so honest.
Miss you, Alex! Great reflections on GDL. And I love seeing Louise in your videos ❤️
Thanks for watching, Halle! 🥰🫶🏼
Then quit complaining like all Mexicans do, and do something about it. Start organizing and fight to make Mexico a better place to live.
,@@johnnyflores5954 I don't complain, Mr.
Makes me cringe when I see straight gringos y gringas with 0 Spanish speaking flocking to these countries. But maybe it's a good thing for tourism

I look forward to the completion of the remodel!
well we are half way into 2024 and the airport is nowhere near being completed. it is a trainwreck!
Jaliscienses are generally a much more friendly people than some of the other states.
Great information!

As far as Safety : Seems pretty par for the course in big Mexican cities where foreigners are, relatively safe. Who really needs to hear these stories about local safety are all the people who are like "I'll never go to Mexico, its dangerous" or think that all of Mexico is a warzone, smh.

Did any of my observations surprise you? I couldn't agree more with what Louise said at 10:40 as one of the worst things about living in Guadalajara 😖
Thank you, Louise, for contributing your thoughts about living in Guadalajara!

Thanks!!
seriously? why dont you just act normal and not base your life on your sexuality? geezus.

@@alex-wittman hi Alex!
I saw it just after typing this ha! I’m directing the question to others in the comments now.
Wow I’m shocked to hear the air quality was slightly better in cdmx. I already have bad allergies so I wonder how worse they’d be in Guadalajara
