Glad to see a cameo from the puppet. :)
"Begin the Beguine" I finally got a joke Robin Williams made in the movie Toys... over 30 years later...
I had "Walkman Sport" it was yellow and waterproof.
I like how he times every jolt of pulling stuff apart with the snare!
That's a very relaxing and fascinating video. I got the impression that here was a chap who actually knew what they were doing.
Your "singing" has all the joy of an office worker forced to go to a work party.
Between this and "Walking on sunshine", it's hard to pick a winner.
Nice pfp :3
@@BlokeOzzie Please provide us the title of the video where he sings Walking on sunshine! I must hear that!
@@BlokeOzzieGood ones for sure but look up "techmoan we are up all night to get lucky" and report back.
It reminded me of a nightshift security guard working over christmas.
Puppets are back!!!
Yay!
Oh Eck !
Freakin’ heck.
Rah!
YAY!!!!!!! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃🥰❤️
"Not as good as 8-track" not a phrase you hear every day!
Well, 8 track is a lot worse than cassette for everyday music listening, but it is so much better suited for some special usecases. Like all those automated toys to play back audio while storing cue point and/or digital data on other tracks, with no need to rewind.

I think we have enough TechMoan karaoke now to put together a little EP release. Let's get him on the charts!
Straight to TOTP!

Oh dear, I'm getting "Bunsen burner" vibes.

Now I really want to go to karaoke with Matt. "Try content matching that, CZcams!" 😂😂😂
British chaotic energy
Been told I have a face for radio, and a voice for silent movies........
@@SeanBZA 😂 Nice one.
Put that on a Tee Shirt 😁

The puppet makes a cameo!!!
It's like he figured out exactly how long he could show a puppet without it appearing in a frame in the preview bar.
Didn't it have a name? I can't remember LOL
@@Cr125stin sure one was you tube pedant but think it was the leather jacket fella.....wasnt that one his dad?
I still keep expecting them at the end...

I braced myself for Matt's singing karaoke, and I was not disappointed.
As far as the design goes, it's aged surprisingly well! It doesn't look particularly mid-80s at all.
The colour - if you know, you know 😢
Looks pretty rad.
Indeed! If you ignore the big ol' tape deck on top, there's bluetooth speakers that look like this _today_.
Not mid-80’s you say? Clean your glasses! 😆
And the yellow is the yellow of the Sony Sports Walkman
The puppets!! Hell yes I miss them
You say you're not a fan but the sheer joy in your face and the ring in your voice betray you. It's like the cheer of a child at Christmas opening a brand new shiny lump of coal!
Lump of coal - luxury - we had to ... etc
So funny😂😂
Nobody you actually want to do Karaoke with will ever SAY they're a fan of Karaoke. People who say they're fans invariably take it seriously and actually sing well, so everybody around them goes "nuh-huh, no way I'm singing after THEM" and the whole night is ruined. You gotta go with those who aren't outspoken fans but can be talked into going and will only sing after a drink or three. :D
Wait a whole 4 minutes before mentioning the K-word.. boss move😂
He knows how to work the CZcams algorithm
Right? Matt's a smart guy! LOL
Those who know "Get Lucky" would look forward to it.
That's what I love about 80's Sony. They we're so good at miniaturizing their hardware and their designs were very ahead of their time. This looks like a modern bluetooth speaker.
astro...and if this was on most CZcams channels...that's exactly what you'd see...a Bluetooth module upgrade...we have TechMoan who has more respect for old tech...not a fashion accessory or just for video likes
@@markianclark9645 You wouldn't even need a hardware mod, a bluetooth cassette would work. Something like this is too rare and too old to use it that way though.
I thought that as soon as i saw the 1982 in the description.
Looks like it just came out.
Same thing here. This design wouldn’t look out of place today.
It seems they had one around when they were designing the XDRV1BTD / SRFV1BT, the latter being the ones I have. Alas doesn't have a handle nor that yellow tone, though I'd wish it had a Micro SD slot so one could play with MP3 or whatever and could be controlled via BT. Otherwise it's fantastic (and it's stereo!)
"And this knob slows it down"
Ah, found the vaporwave control
Oh man, first a dashcam video, and now puppets AND a karaoke machine. Techmoan flashbacks all around. 😂
Many times at group parties in Japan, the revelers will get a bingo game going for laughs. When the members of my office go out for end-of-year, or beginning-of-year bashes at the local izakaya, someone usually brings a bag of cheap items for prizes and we play bingo after the booze has been flowing for some time.
Sake and Bingo. I'm sure Netflix will find a way to turn that into a drama
11:37 In addition to the key, it's also indicating the range of the song-the highest and lowest notes in the melody-so that you can get an idea of whether or not you'll actually be able to sing it (or not 😅)
Anyone could sing anything with the right attitude and the right amount of intoxication.
Or alter the tape speed...
Not necessary, the answer is always no, you won't be able to.
If it's a Mike Patton song it would just say good luck.
@@nojuanatall3281 same thing I would say to anyone expecting him to show up to any of his own shows
Ahhhhh. I remember this "payper" technology. I think I still have a couple devices around that are compatible with it...
It's a shame that the business folded.
In this video we got a payper view.
It's so A4dable.
You should all have the book thrown at you for the awful paper jokes.
Techmoan effect, price of used paper on eBay has skyrocketed
I had no idea how much I’d missed the puppets till that guy turned up! Really great video as well.
11:19 Oh yes please, do a video on that old media technology, _'PAPER!'_ 😂😂
Can someone explain how that 'paper' thing works?
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx Well, ya see, back in the day we used to sacrifice trees to the gods of knowledge. We'd grind their carcasses into a pulp and press them into sheets, then cover them with gobs of resin harvested from other living things to put symbols for phonemes on them.
Those were truly barbaric times.
@@petersage5157 The sickening horror! Thankfully we live in an enlightened age.
@@RebeccaTurner-ny1xx But it gets worse. We used to take those sheets of dead tree carcass and bind them together using rendered animal flesh, and frequently covered these bound pages with animal skins. (This part is barely hyperbole; with the exception of books with sewn registers, the binding material is hide glue. We still use hide glue to bind most mass market paperbacks. If you ever watch _My Little Pony,_ try not to think about that anytime somepony reads a book.)
Paper is still widely used in Japan.
This channel is a hoarders dream in old tech. I want all of the obscure things!
When you "sang" that song, " when you're smiling" it made me weepwith emotion!! Finally i realised that I wasn't the world's worst singer. Thank you Mat. I feel so relieved😂😂
So glad to see the puppets back, even if ever so brief!
He's either trolling us and has the voice of an angel, or angeling us and has the voice of a troll. Haven't figured it out yet.
Clearly you haven't heard Mat's previous attempts at singing?
(SPOILER ALERT: The answer is B, the [singing] voice of a troll.)
That reminds me of Sissy Spacek's very different singing performances in "Verna USO Girl" (1978) vs. "Coal Miner's Daughter" (1980).
He's just painfully British.
His house IS under a bridge, I'm told.
The puppets are back, NICE! We need more puppets.
I would love to see a Techmoan in Japan video , “Our Moan In Japan “ ? 😂
I'd be happy with the budget green-screen version with Chinese puppets.
@@sircompocheaper to use Matt!
That would be an amazing idea for a show, would definitely watch that!
That would be too awkward. One old brit is already enough for japan.

Sony 360° sound before Sony 360 Reality Audio
Ironicly listening on a 360 RA capable earbuds.
Interesting and imaginative use of the integrated decimal point of the LED 7 segment display. They have used the display upside down with the dot at the top left rather than the bottom right. Obviously they have to reverse the segment drivers to get the number correct then use the dot to indicate 'teens'.
You are a very brave man, Mr. T. Moan, when the kareoke comes out. Please never stop, I beg you. You always make me smile or laugh out loud. Thank you so much
*Karaoke;...
Props for saying "Bass Boost Button" in rhythm with the music. 🤘
I think the BINGO connection is that you can use these machines as an amplification system when calling out BINGO numbers, especially if you’re in a larger room and need to be heard. Since this unit sends out equal volume in all directions, it’s well suited for the job.
I disagree. You'll be sat right Infront of the speaker no matter where you are. Your microphone better be a hyper cardioid or you'll be struggling with feedback

‘Reverb’ 😁
Yup, TM - your singing truly cannot be matched! 🙂
Kristen Schaal as "Louise Belcher" doing a flat version of "Endless Love" on the "The Silence of the Louise" episode is a close match. czcams.com/video/54DqrsJmF10/video.html
Kind of reminds me of those radios that builders use outside when they want music while they work.
Color scheme does suggest a work site radio, but those came later. Maybe this was ahead of it’s time.
Yes - before we got to the microphones my guess was that this was a worksite player.
Loving the guest appearance of the Muppet! 😅
And the tortured look on your face when singing 😂
Kudos to you not stealing his video views, but instead forwarding your viewers to him. A lot of famous CZcamsrs should do this.
i used to hate the puppets at first but later I started to enjoy them. i hope techmoan bring them back. if they are at the end of the video, people who don't enjoy them can just close the video.
CZcams auto set his videos with the puppets in them to be "kids video-flagged" mucking up his algoritm visibility and monetization etc etc. Thats why he cant have them anymore he says.
@@GoldenCroc He could make a separate channel and upload puppet videos there, but he may don't want to, don't have enough time or ideas so he's not doing it.
Dude, I loved the puppets so much...
@@GoldenCrocYup, when it's flagged as kids video then it becomes a whole other set a criteria his video will be held to, and if it has "inappropriate" content not suitable for kids then he get's dinged. Its really too bad, when there are adult cartoons out there that probably don't get held to this standard etc..
@@GoldenCroc i didn't know that. thanks for sharing
This may or may not be a popular position to express here, but, man, I miss the puppet bits! My son found You, Mat, years ago, when he was a pre-teen (he's now one year from his electrical engineering degree), and it was the puppets he showed to me that got me to be a devoted follower. I understand that the puppet bits are time-consuming and difficult, but they cheer my heart, and I think I'm going to go find some of them to re-watch right now.
This was great watching, especially good for the deaf. But seriously one of my favourite videos from you. Reviews of interesting, quirky and surprisingily good quality products is why I watch. And of course someone that doesn't take the subject matter or themselves too seriously makes the enthusiasm shine through. Thanks.
Thank you for all of your hard work
This might sound corny, but your channel is the only channel that gives me nostalgia for the good old days during the covid pandemic. Sitting in my quiet bedroom with no traffic whizzing by on the busy road next to my window. Keep up the good work.
I had a little Aiwa stereo cassette player form the 80s that had the digital song tracking thing on it. Was a good little unit.
RETURN OF THE PUPPETS! Come on Mat, let's have more of the Moans!
I like that paper technology. It's so convinient

Good lord, Matt. That spin at the start convinced me this was sponsored! Then I saw the puppet. I have never been happier!!!!!
Never in my life did I think I'd hear Marvin The Paranoid Android segue so seamlessly into Alan Partridge. That was a thing of beauty.
It's always a delight when Mat sings in his videos! It's definitely hilarious!😂😂😂
Have I ever mentioned that if there were an all puppets spin-off channel, I'd be here for it? 😀
Paging Brian Henson, have we got a job that would have flummoxed your father, David!
Matt has a playlist...
@@fumthings I know. I've seen them all. I need NEW puppet content!
Schools in Taiwan used these in the 80s and 90s for listening tests in classrooms.
That reminds me of my German class in high school. They had a language lab with stations that had cassette decks, each station had a double-muff headphone with a built in mic, and you would often be paired with someone else either adjacent to you or across the room (you could speak to each other) to practice phrases or answers to questions on the pre-recoded cassette. I believe there was a second tape deck that would record as well. The teacher could remote in and listen to you and chime in to help. The teacher would listen from a central control unit at the head of the classroom and be able to listen to each student or pairs of students, you didn't know when the teacher was listing. So if you weren't doing anything, they would certainly cut in to ask why or if you didn't understand the session. But you didn't know who the teacher was listing to at the time, so it was always to your advantage to keep going no matter how bad you were butchering it up.
The cassette decks were all remote controlled from the central unit, so they would all rewind or fast-forward together in unison, (rather impressive) I believe they must have used a timecode on one of the stereo pairs as they had a LED real-time counter and they seemed frame accurate as they always hit the mark right before the start of the next session. This was late 80's brand new system, as the high school just had a major renovation the year before. I wonder how many years they used it tell some digital equivalent came about.
Oh man, I remember this system. Was it made by Roland?
I was at a school in the North of England that had a 'language lab' fitted circa 1989. Truly weird.
@@charlesbridgford254 I was also at a comprehensive school here in the north-east of England that, when I arrived in 1977, had a cassette-based language lab that had all those cubicles. It was never used. When I asked my German teacher why not, he told me that pupils had damaged the machines. But I always wanted to try it out and never could.
@@marcusdamberger the one school I went to in the 1980s had a language lab like that, but they were intended for kids that had various handicaps that made it difficult for them to learn spoken language. It was never used for "ordinary" kids
@@charlesbridgford254 Yes, I believe they were Roland! Had black fascia, pretty sure the teacher could lock you out of the controls at times. Roland must have sold this system everywhere. I wonder who put together the lesson tapes, they were professionally done with native speakers and sometimes had sound effects depending on the content. Must have been installed around 87'/88'. Tended to use it at least once a month.
Nothing makes a better weekend morning than puppets, karaoke, and a Techmoan video. Living the good life.
Matt, your karaoke never ceases to bring me joy. Some people may balk when you bring out a vintage karaoke machine and start belting out tunes, but it always leaves me in stitches.
Just watched the repair vid that Matt linked and it is really nicely made and quite a satisfying to watch 🙂
I always find it surprising just how many wires are used in older tech, where as these days everything would be condensed down to as fewer boards/components as possible. I guess they were trying to do the same at the time but were limited by the tech available.
Also love seeing the puppets again 😄

On your way for an Emmy, Matt 😅 thanks for another cool video mate😊
The styling and color is somewhat reminiscent of the sony sports walkmen. Imagine jogging in the park with this thing.
I had that very Walkman circa 1986!
Well … the Walkman was IMHO lemon, this thing is deffo. mustard (or tar) colour.
I'm getting a mental image of Dee Snyder warbling "We're Not Gonna Take it" on the Sony KPX-1, as he jogs past surprised folks.;)
Yes,it reminds me of my old Sports CFS-905 L from the mid 90s,that was somewhere between this and the sports walkmans in colour :-)
I have a early 90s Sports Walkman (model# WM-SFX30), and the color seems to be pretty close to the unit in the video.
Listening to you sing, brightened up my day.
More singing and feedback! Brought tears to my eyes.
😂
Yay! A puppet sighting.
Interesting concept, I could see someone running with this for a Bluetooth speaker with a lantern in the base, that pulls out or whatver
LG make one called LG XBOOM 360. Had a play with one in Costco, it was pretty good.
Ah tis' like the singing o' the angels!! Knowing how much effort you put into your work means that seeing you do a new puppet sketch is truly appreciated!! In spite of what you say your videos bring me true joy!!
Your little laugh at the end of your performance made it so much better! You were trying to keep a straight face the whole time 😂.
If that giant "sony" logo werent on the front, I wouldve assumed it was made by Panasonic. Looks like the kind of thing they'd make...
with tapes made by Victor (JVC effectively)
I hoped Mat would give it a real thump to check if the echo is from a spring reverb. The little noise at 12:05 suggests you could get quite a racket from it. 7:23 the expression on the little cartoon guy in the brochure is hilarious
I love that you always show old Sony stuff. They used to innovate so much
I love it when you laughed after "that's about enough of that!". That was hilarious!
A few thoughts.... 1) Sony should use this design in a Bluetooth speaker, but make it stereo/Atmos, etc. 2) PUPPETS♥!!
I think it is probably impossible to make an acoustically properly performing stereo model with these 360° speakers. It would probably create a huge mess with the phase relation of the two channels with the listener at different angles and distance from the unit.
I have a Tribit Stormbox Pro that has a similar form factor (a little smaller, but the same basic shape). It plays in stereo (separate left and right drivers with two passive radiators) and also allows linking a second Stormbox Pro in "stereo more" (each speaker operates in mono, one as Left Channel, the other as Right Channel) and also a "party mode" (both play in mono but output the same audio) so it is certainly possible to do. I don't have a second one to test that functionality, but I assume it's well-implemented, judging by how well it works as a single speaker. Stereo separation is also very good.
At $120 on everybody's favorite online vendor, it's not cheap, but it is able to crank up pretty loud before distorting, and louder than more-expensive offerings from the likes of JBL.
Also, it puts out surprisingly-good sound, great bass even with Bass Boost off, and better-than-expected treble response as well. If you put it in the right spot (like a few inches away from a corner of the room) it blows many bookshelf stereo systems out of the water. As an added bonus, it doesn't have the ubiquitous "Ze Bleu Toof Dewice Is Riddy To Pal" voice prompts. It can also use its internal battery to charge devices (albeit slowly) during playback.
I now want one
Thanks for bringing a smile on my face, it was much needed on my very delayed train ride.
That music selection feature functions similarly to the track seek/skip function on the Technics SL-J92 turntable I have (I think you reviewed it's cousin in a video a couple years back), kinda interesting.
This is a far out piece of kit! Great work as always, I've also missed the puppets!
