Great video! Your detailed breakdown of your Preptober process is super useful, especially for fellow "pantsers." The to-do list sorted into categories like World Building and Ideation is a good strategy. It really highlights the importance of understanding where your project currently stands and what steps you need to take next. I also LOVEEE the idea of using a "back jacket summary" as a brainstorming tool, totally ingenious. Thanks for sharing such helpful content!

I love this! I’m a pantser and I’ve done a few of the things you’re mentioning. When I wrote my YA fantasy novel in 2020/2021, I wrote a query letter first, and I found that really helpful when I went to draft. I probably should do something like that again for my latest project, but there isn’t a lot of time until NaNoWriMo now.

Great ideas! I love the idea of a scene list. I'm pantsing this year and this sounds like a great way to avoid the 'what do I write now?' days

Hi, Rachel! Excellent Plot Summit presentation, with lots of golden information. I really enjoyed it and will be applying some of them to my own processes.
The idea of the to-do list is golden, as it will also help in the editing stage. I don't think I'm writing fantasy anytime soon lol, it's too much for my poor brain XD but maybe one day I'll cave and see how to make it work for me.

I'm not doing NaNo this year, but since I'm planning to start on my novel in earnest next year, I might then! Either way, I'll need to take some time at the beginning of the project to organize something like this. I'm sure I'm said before that I do outline but it's very minimalist. Right now I have a pretty good idea of like, the first 1/3-1/2 of the story and then there's a WALL of ??????? And usually I have at least an idea of what I want to happen, so, I gotta up my ideation game!
Awesome to hear that scene list is growing!

Defining the main conflict for my romance novel is difficult, because they're so easily solved with the characters just spending time together. 😂 I'm a big advocate for communication in a relationship, specifically because it helps avoid misunderstandings and conflicts turning into something bigger. Which is not good for a story that needs conflict to last its duration. 😅

honestly... healthy relationships need more rep in the book market, especially with the rise of dark romances. As a writer/reader, it would be a refreshing change :) as someone who considers myself a 'palate cleanser' writer (for readers who want to take a break from more intense romance sub-genres), I focus on writing the stuff that I want to see more in the world.

@@theauthorgirl-podcastAbsolutely! It just makes it difficult to write a novel when the conflicts only last a couple chapters, then it's just reading through the happy domestic life. I love slice of life stories that are just chill like that, I guess I'm just worried it'll come across as a "nothing happens" book.

@@jadaw644 there's a reason why Slice of Life is a category. Your readers are out there. Don't feel like you have to change anything for the sake of the market.
