How to change the primary display in Windows 11 or make a display the main display, is what we look at in this video today.
So why would you want to change your primary monitor / display in an extended display setup in Windows 11? Perhaps it's a bigger screen, apps by default tend to open on the primary display when used for the first time, it's a larger / bigger monitor, notifications appear, lock screen, sign in / log in screen.
Changing the primary monitor on Windows 11 is easy and straightforward to do it's just knowing how to do.
In this video there are two monitors - so we're going to show how to make the monitor on the right the primary or the main monitor / screen.
Note that no physical changes are needed to the monitors, all it takes is a few simple changes to your Windows 11 display settings on your PC / computer / laptop.
How to change the primary display in Windows 11 - Process 👇👇👇
So in order to make a display the main display in Windows 11, follow these steps:
1️⃣ Click on the magnifying glass on the toolbar.
2️⃣ Type 'display' in the Windows search bar as shown in the video.
3️⃣ Then select 'duplicate or extend to a connected display' as shown. The Windows 11 system display settings window opens. As shown, our monitor 1 is currently the main / primary monitor. This is our smaller monitor.
Each monitor will be numbered - click 'identify' to display which monitor is which.
4️⃣ Select the desired monitor which is required as the primary / main display by left clicking your mouse. Once selected, the relevant monitor should turn blue in colour.
5️⃣Go down to 'multiple displays' underneath the screen layouts. Click the dropdown arrow as shown.
6️⃣Choose the 'make this my main display' option. The screen will go black for a few seconds (this is normal) whilst the monitor / display / screen changes take effect.
7️⃣The primary / main display now has changed. Apps, notifications, the lock screen, log in screen and more will now use this primary monitor / main monitor.
