  • The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, often abbreviated "HHGTTG", was written by Douglas Adams for BBC Radio 4.
Adams claimed that the title came from a 1971 incident while he was hitchhiking around Europe as a young man with a copy of the Hitch-hiker's Guide to Europe book, and while lying drunk in a field in Innsbruck with a copy of the book and looking up at the stars, thought it would be a good idea for someone to write a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy as well.

I understand why people don't like this movie. I really do. It differs wildly from the books, which are brilliant and hilarious. But frankly, this is one of my favorite movies. I saw it when I was a kid and I've loved it ever since. Yeah, the characters were a little different and the story was barely the same, but who really cares? The writing is hilarious, the movie's story is brilliant, and the casting is top-notch. Truly a great family comedy. And, while the story itself is technically different, the whole film is very much in the spirit of the books. Satirical, ridiculous, and at times almost surreal. I think Douglas Adams would've been proud.

Always find that quite weird, as the books themselves are based on a six part radio drama, which in itself was different to the book. Douglas always said that things need to be adapted to the medium they are in.

Any Douglas Adams fan can tell you that Douglas Adams actually wrote a Film Script and tried to get it made, touting it around film companies. He was informed that no one was interested in comedy sci-fi, then the film Men in Black was released. Douglas Adams did get involved with one company in actual film production, but I don't know how far that got. I do remember him saying that it went on for a long time.

    • @My2Cents1
      @My2Cents1 Před 9 lety +66

The hate the movie gets is because of blind nostalgia for the old TV show. And that's ALL it is, no matter what the haters say. I saw the TV show AFTER I had read the book(s), and after having seen the movie. Should come as no surprise that I thought the TV show sucked. So much in fact, that I couldn't watch more than a 3, maybe 4 episodes. It's hokey, over acted in that not so charming 70s way, low budget, and looks like shit. Looks almost worse, or at least as bad as classic Dr Who. It certainly doesn't do the books any justice IMHO.
I love this movie. You can tell that Douglas Adams wrote the screenplay adaptation for it, and you can feel the love the cast/crew has for his work. It's really too bad that it didn't get at least one sequel, although I think Douglas adapted the ending beautifully in order for it to work as just one movie.

It was tbh not funny at all. Its a scifi Comedy and they added jokes that would only suit little toddlers. It is nothing like the original its almost as if they were trying to think up a completely different film. If that was the case id much rather it was hitchikers guide separate.
The casting was not great. Mos Def (ford prefect) rubbish actor. I wasn't able to believe it was REALLY an alien from another planet who was insane bizzare and happy babby. I believed it actually was an actor who was just acting for a movie.
its a comedy yet the jokes are shit. the plotline itself is mind boggingly dull. and nowhere as good as originals.

So here's my deal - this movie brought me into the fandom and AFTER watching the movie about three times and making a costume from it did I read the series. I do see why many are angry that it "didn't do the books justice", but that's the thing I love about this entire series - there are so many iterations to talk about and each one is different from another. So without knowing anything about the books, it's a darn great movie and it's entertaining and all. I don't believe that the movie is crap for not explicitly following the books and I respect the director's choices 👌
My sermon is over and I love Sam Rockwell thanks to this movie goodnight

Honestly, I liked this movie. Sure it lured away from the story a lot, and there's no question that it would be better if Douglas Adams was alive to help produce it, but I strongly admire the attempt. In the foreward of Adams' book, which was written 20 years before this was made, it says that he was trying to make a film of his stories. This was it. Sure it wasn't the best in the entire franchise, but it got the job done, and it entertained the hell out of me. What I also really liked was the fact that the studio made a lot of effort to not rely so much on Computer Generated Imagery by building authentic sets, structures, costumes and even props. Furthermore, the puppets were a bonus. Sure they weren't the best puppets, but it's way better than watching some cheesey CGI character talk with a real person on a green screen movie set like in most movies nowadays.

When you examine something like this, you have to leave canon out of it.
I loved that they made it slightly different but in the same spirit as the original book, you can't always make a movie about something and be 100% that's not how movies work.
I'm usually a canon stickler especially when it comes to Star Trek and Star Wars but not in this case because really the craziness that these characters experience is pretty much what you'd find in the works of the artist the book was written by. People understood what the writer was saying and ran with it. Now had this been something serious then yeah I might have been canon specific in my expectations but this isn't a series really and it was only meant by the author to make several points.

But Adams himself adapted the story each time around, for each medium - different for the books, different again for the original TV series, and, one more time, different for the big screen, at least as far as he got with the screenplay before his untimely death. Ultimately, It All Works.

"its a great story to begin with" - don't hear that often in hollywood ;)

I don't know what Douglas Adams was smoking when he wrote those books but it must have been great stuff.
I just LOVE his wacky sense of humor.

" They couldn't afford Jim Carrey so they got me ". Thank God. Jim Carrey is best in small, TINY doses. Jim Carrey as Zaphod Beeblebrox would've really dragged the film down.

I enjoyed the Film for what it was, but it was hardly like a watching Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy tbh. The BBC series from the early 80's did that just fine.

wow, from reading the comments, I never even knew people didn’t like it. I freaking love this movie. I’ve watched it over and over and over through the years. It was my first exposure to Douglas Adams in any wat shape or form. Of course it strays from the original material. ALL movies do! Jeez, I guess some “super intelligent” Adams fans are not quite capable of acknowledging things like that. Dah well who cares. One of my personal faves.

Yes different from the books which I've read loads of times and love but this is also utterly ridiculous and fantastic. The cast were perfect I thought and I really enjoyed it. Better than the tripe that is normally turned out by Hollywood.

For those comparing it to the old TV series, fyi, it was a radio series first, which was great. The TV series was kind of crap, too. In order of quality:
    Radio
    Books
    Film
    TV series

Oh, I appreciate, I jsut watched the first spisode of the TV show before and thought it had lost all of its comic timing, and was jsut rehashing the radio show but using really bad sfx instead of clever and hilariously. It was kind of like someone explaining punchlines rather than making jokes.

I mostly loved this movie, even though I know it doesn't follow the book very well. The one thing that almost ruined it for me was the cheesy love story, it felt very unnecessary and almost like it didn't quite belong.

Read the first book when it was first released. Consumed everything related since. I'm a _serious_ fan. Trust me: People that don't get this movie would DEFINITELY not being willing to put in the attention to enjoy the books. And as for those who panned the flick? That seems to be part of modern culture: Professional haters and misanthropes who are _NEVER_ satisfied and that is the only thing that brings such nihilists satisfaction.

What the hell kind of comment is this??
Is that really your entire outlook on humanity? 🤦🏻‍♂️
I had no idea of this stories existence for the longest time myself, then randomly stumbled on the BBC series one time in my early teens, then I read the first book, then I watched the movie when it came out, fell so in love with the story and just went and read all three of the novels back to back, and have just been either listening to the audiobooks, or rewatching both the series and movie my entire adult life, being 34 now, with the knowledge that all three books are essentially what went into making the movie, as there are bits of all three scattered about it, and if you really were such a *serious fan* you would know that Douglas adams himself co-wrote the damn screenplay for the movie lol… 🤔
So what’s this about “professional haters and misanthropes never being satisfied/nihilists/blah blah blah” you’re going on about??
Are you just one of those people who writes arbitrarily hateful comments about how stupid everyone else has to be because of how smart you think you are?
Lol maybe you’re just projecting a little too hard??
Regardless, love the books, love the series, love the movie.
      Great storytelling all around.
      Now try unclenching a bit.
