I had met him for an autograph session at Forbidden Planet (NYC) that day; chatted a bit; said he would be on Letterman that night and set my VCR. So not only did I get his autograph, a hint on the text adventure, but also now, due to this posted video, a copy of the interview that night. Many thanks for the posting!
This aired on valentines day of my 1st yr of life (being born the previous Apr), aw. Douglas has been the biggest inspiration on my life thus far to it's great a rare gem interview like this finally popped up, and I'm sure Adams would have LOVED CZcams and all the technology we have now
bit of trivia, it was Douglas Adams who introduced Richard Dawkins to Lalia Ward and she later became Richards wife, .. she was also playing Dr Who's assistant in the BBC tv show. ( i think Tom Baker was playing Dr Who at the time)
Huh, this story is in the novel Solar by Ian McEwan. I've always wondered whether it really happened to McEwan, but I guess it comes from Douglas Adams.
"I'm a science fiction writer, I can't count." That joke went way over Letterman's head.
Laughed myself sick the first time I read that story in the book.
Miss you Douglas.
"Good luck with the film" - little did they know it wouldn't finally be made for another 20 years!
I really hope this story has reached the other guy at the train station.

Oh man, that cookie story never gets old.
RIP Douglas Adams 1952-2001
Deeply missed. Been a lifelong fan since the first time the radio series aired on BBC Radio 4 in 1978.
"The film when it comes out..."
Wow. 20 years later.
This man is my hero!

I really like his tie.
I wish he'd have been like...my uncle or something. Best storyteller ever!!
How many biscuits are in an English pack of biscuits? Also, so long Douglas Adams, thanks for all the fish.
Josh Bobst You too, Letterman, thanks for all the fish.
Buzzfeed brought me here... thank you!!!!
Good god! Thank you so much for uploading this :)
I like the subway shot in the beginning. classy.
I found it cool that they mention the PC game!
Text adventure promotion on TV! So 80s!
I hope that other guy got around to hearing the story eventually and got the punch line & missing piece to his story :D
Sheesh, where does 30 years go?
I didn't know D had been on Letterman! Letterman has hair but hasn't changed a bit. D is awesome!

He was a giant!!!!!!!

I can't believe that David is still the host of the Late Show on CBS after 30+ years.
human sponge night, if Douglas had put that in one of his stories people would call him weird
I hope the other guy finds this video LOL:)
The guy with the biscuits (sorry, cookies) dislikes this video.
It's human sponge night????
i think there was a failed deal in the 70s and they brought it back later
wierd, the same story happened to my grandmother but with a kitkat!
that game is IMPOSSIBLE - it LIES to you!!
have you the episode of 12 February 1985 guest Jane Badler please send me a message if yes
Wow. David Letterman aged a lot in 2013. Well so did a lot of people, but whatever. Just first thing I noticed..
Bizarrely, I have a (presumably false) memory of this story being part of a Dad's Army script.
In England you can eat other people's biscuits and they won't say a thing :)
