  • Zidane is the GOAT. But when was he at his best?
Here is what some top class footballers say about Zizou.
“When Zidane stepped onto the pitch, the 10 other guys just got suddenly better. It is that simple. It was magic. He was a unique player. He was more than good, he came from another planet. His team-mates became like him when he was on the pitch.” Zlatan Ibrahimovic
“He played the most beautiful football. If there was a painting before Zinedine, it was embellished with his magical paintbrush.” Juan Pablo Sorin
“He is the best player I’ve seen. Zizou had something apart. Playing alongside him was a crazy thing! Supporters arrived earlier at the Bernabeu just to see him warm-up!” Roberto Carlos
“He dominates the ball, he is a walking spectacle and he plays as if he had silk gloves on each foot. He makes it worthwhile going to the stadium - he’s one of the best I have ever seen.” - Alfredo di Stefano
“Simply watching him train inspires me. He is one of the best players in the world. He thinks in one second and does it the next. He is a special player, one who is original and exceptional. He creates space where there is none. Only the very best players can do that. No matter where he gets the ball or how it comes to him, Zidane can get out of trouble. His imagination and his technique are amazing.” - Edgar Davids
“To train with Zidane for three years was a dream. For me, he is the greatest player of all time.” - David Beckham

I discovered Zidane in 1996 during Euro 96 and his 1st season at Juve, he certainly had a rather special talent but had a certain physical difficulty which prevented him from being among the 10 best in the world at the time... but he improved enormously at Juve and I really realized how good he was during the tournament in Lyon in 1997... his prime for me was 1997 at 2004...then in 2006 it exploded during the CDM...
Zidane is one of the 5 best players in history without any problems...

I agree with most of what you wrote apart from the last statement. V close though. I think Zinedine Zidane in 2001/2002 season at RM was basically unbelievable.
I think the 2002 world cup injury was a jinx to show he was still very human, else, he seemed anything but human.

zidane really was a man possessed when playing for france. and he was from the very first minute : on his first game in 1994, he entered just after the hour mark (replacing my favorite player at the time, corentin martins), with france losing 2-0 to the czech republic. he shot twice. scored twice. in two minutes. as a ten years old kid at that time, that's the day zizou was born for me.

  • @brosephyolonarovichstalin2915

He absolutely shredded the World Cup 1998, but one can argue his BEST performances for France were 8 years later when he dragged an average team to the WC final. He was absolutely amazing and ninety minutes was never enough when watching him. The beauty and knowledge that no matter what happens he will keep the ball it’s just how he does it; incredible.
    The best ever.
Brazil 0 France 1 he was unreal. I mean another level of midfield dominance.

    Zidane during his prime :
    2 Serie A titles (1997, 1998 Back to Back)
    1 World Cup (1998)
    1 UEFA Euro (2000)
    1 UCL (2002)
    1 Ballon d'Or (1998)
    1 La Liga (2003)
Zidane after retirement (as manager) :
    3 straight UCLs (2016-2018)
    2 La Liga (2017, 2019-20)
    2 Supercopa de España (2017, 2019-20)
2 FIFA Club World Cup (2017, 2018 Back to Back)
Zidane is really born to be a legend of the beautiful game.
Additionally, he uses fundamentals when he plays, thus showing the Beautiful Game's fundamentals making him Football version of Basketball legend Tim Duncan who also uses fundamentals during his NBA career.

I hate this. "balloon d'or" title pls. Platini elevated it's significance to accommodate good players like him.
Exceptional players did the "Fifa player of the year" awards. Only R9 and Zizou had 3.
Zizou won best player in the world 1998, 2000, 2003. Came 2nd bcos of his bad behaviour in 2006. He was MVP of the 2006 world cup that traditionally translated to fifa player of a world cup year.
      3rd in '97, 3rd in 2002,
So, pls stop using ballon d'or to make him look regular and overhype Platini, who btw, never won world player of the year ever bcos if the likes of Diego Maradona.
For those that are too young to know. Pele(the greatest) NEVER won a ballon d'or award.
So pls, stop downgrading my icon Zinedine Yazid Zidane.

Both are amongst my favourite 3 or 4 players ever so I'm not biased either way, I just think that it's too difficult to say outright who was 'better' as neither could be as effective as the other if they played each others position.

He wouldn't of lasted at Manchester United as there is no way Ferguson would let a player be a passenger unless you were a striker and even then only Cantona and Ronaldo were afforded thst luxury. I think thats why Keane, Scholes and Giggs never got a ballon dor because they had to do just as much donkey work as attacking play and normally world class players didn't have to do that work so they could concentrate on magic. Other managers always used to ask Ferguson how he gets Beckham abd the other 3 work as hard as everyone else and his reply was that it is not about individual awards but about the team and having one or two world class players looking great is not about all 11 looking great, but if any of those players went abroad they would have all won ballon dors
