The unicorn phase is my life since childhood decades ago and also the owls and peacocks. I’ve been obsessed with those since elementary school and I’m a g-ma now so it’s never going to end at this point.
Not sure if you have done this before but maybe you could do “makeup we hated at the time but would have liked nowadays” the subculture palette is one example I can think of

The modern renaissance photo gave me so much nostalgia. I remember my husband (boyfriend at the time) saving up at his job at subway to get me this. I remember thinking “he spent so much money on makeup for me” and it just means a lot to me to this day. I even remember leading up to the release I was debating between this one and the naked 1 and would talk nonstop about it to him haha. I remember being embarrassed to tell my friends I was really into makeup youtube and only told my husband and my mom about it. Now it’s so common if you say you enjoy makeup, people are like “duh”. So much can change in 5 years 🥰 for the better too. We have so much better products for cheaper prices. Thanks for the feels, Hannah.

The Naked and Modern Renaissance palettes are The Beatles of the makeup world. Groundbreakers and trailblazers for their time, but wouldn't do nearly as well or get nearly as much attention now.
Lime Crime actually did their version of modern renaissance (the Venus palette) and then Venus grunge (their version of subculture) first before ABH came out with theirs. I don't like Lime Crime but if you look at the timeline of palette releases and Lime Crimes cancellation it's obvious ABH saw an opportunity to copy the vibe and colour story of Venus knowing they could get away with it and pounced on it. Even the marketing concepts are very similar (LC marketed their Venus 2 as the 'grunge sister' of Venus 1, and the original Venus was based on Renaissance art - hence having the Birth of Venus as the cover art).

@@emeliac4307 So agree. Lime Crime was the ground breaker, the other brands had the $$$ and took off with it, still have my OG Venus palette and the coveted OG liquid lip in Cashmere. Cancel culture began a long time ago, now it is just trendy.
@@emeliac4307 I feel like Lime Crime is turning their shit around, whereas ABH is going the way Lime Crime started. Lime Crime is making an effort to do better and I think either ABH is desperate or just kinda giving up and relying on rapid releases and influencers to do their selling for them.
I have some of the Lime Crime Venus (Chroma and Exposed) palettes and I'm absolutely in love with them. They're usually the ones I reach for first. My ABH palettes are usually picked up once or twice and usually it's the Jackie Aina palette because that one was actually the best collab they did.

I think Urban Decay calling the blushes “afterglow” is actually pretty on point. I’m assuming they went for the after (sex) glow, blushy and dewy look 😂 and i remember they had some sneaky sexual names back in the day too
I found it a fitting name too but I thought it referred to drugs lol
I actually think the naked smoky palette would’ve HIT like in... September. When all the cool toned palettes came out, I feel like it would’ve gone over well IF AND ONLY IF Urban Decay hadn’t beaten the naked dead horse with a damn stick

I really miss ABH when it was Anastasia. It was one of my top favorite brands. I don’t even wear makeup anymore but if she took over again I’d buy the next palette in a heartbeat!

The holographic makeup phase was so bizarre, like brands decided we all wanted to be mermaids and unicorns and we all just went along
I wonder if it had anything to do with the 'mermaid' hair trend, blue/green ombre
But to me that’s honestly the whole fun about makeup... like, as children we just put glitter all over our face cause it’s fun, but then eventually we stop, but why? I honestly will never stop loving the mermaid-y look 🤷🏻♀️

I don't think the rainbow highlight would be popular today. We're going away from that "poppin highlight" and wearing more natural, dewy, light makeup looks.
Colored highlights can still be cute and still get hype though! Maybe if it were a multi chrome instead
I only wear colorful highlighters, i don’t see the point otherwise, “normal” colors just look greasy on me 🤷🏻♀️
I’ll say this about KVD: their holiday palette is completely recyclable and comes with instructions on how to recycle the component. That’s kind of awesome
Modern renaissance pallet in my opinion is a classic especially for Brown girls.
For example when my mom was a teen ager she would wear the Maybelline Blue Mascara EVERY SINGLE DAY. Times have changed!

I would agree about Afterglow, but I honestly immediately go the afterglow after sex, where people are flushed. I would have still gotten that edge.

Serpentina...the only palette I detested so badly that I drove to the closest Sephora (out of state) to return.
I have MetalMatte which, in my opinion, was when the brand peaked. Serpentina was the next release and I was like 👁️👄👁️ what is this bullshit. I bought it but the formula had totally changed. I still have kvd pre like 17 but anything after is a no until kvdvb.
I feel that when UD was bought by L'Oréal thats when they lost their magic.

The Benefit product was They’re Real Eyeliners not mascara. The eyeliners pushed up and were horrible.
This annoys me so much because it makes me believe she is lying now. She went on a rant about something that isn't even the product. And they weren't that bad. A lot better than most color eyeliners

I'm gonna expose myself and say that I still have and love my naked Smokey, and its literally the ONLY one I liked and kept lmaooo
I heard it's the best smokey palette that was available during its time. Unfortunately I never got one myself, but I know of a brand that copied nearly the entire colour story. Haven't tried that version of the brand's shadows though, so idk how good it is.
I liked my Smokey palette too and made a lot of great looks with it. However, I remember being sad because my shadows went bad after about 6 months.

Me too! That palette is so user friendly! Smokey eyeshadow looks are tricky to do usually, but using that palette is such a dream. It looks so boring too, but I can make so many looks out of it.

The colored "They're Real" products from what I remember were the liners, not the mascara. I'm pretty sure I was working at Ulta at the time and I can't remember if there was also mascara that was paired with the liners but the picture you showed is definitely the "They're Real" colored liner. They were pretty good in formula but weird to use imo.
Pretty sure there wasn't a mascara for that line it was eyeliners, and it makes me now believe that she is lying because she says her friend uses these mascaras all the time when it isn't even a mascara.
Yea I just looked it up, benefit has NEVER made a colorful mascara so she is lying about the entire thing.
@@cadycastle9957 I mean LYING is a pretty strong word. These products came out 4 to 5 years ago. I more so think she is misremembering the brand. Would be a bit of a silly thing to lie about.
@cady castle she said her friend wore colored mascara every day. She never said it was specifically that one - which apparently isn’t a mascara at all. A little weird to jump to say she lying when she just made a mistake and you’ve misunderstood her comment about her friend.

Modern Renaissance still to this day is a palette I desperately want but just can’t bring myself to buy, mainly because of the price and the fact that I have so many other eyeshadow palettes... if it was ever half price tho I’d 100% buy it no questions asked, there’s something so unique about the colour story

Urban Decay is probably the only cosmetics brand that makes me sad they fell off. It was the first “fancy” eye shadow palette I ever bought.

I am, currently struggling with depression and anxiety, starting to get medication and the adaptation process is horrible, I vomited 3 times today, and I barely can get out of bed. I remember lusting over the Serpintina palette in 2016! I didn't end up buying it because the formula was apparently just okay, but I remember that color story being so exciting for the time.
Also, I'm bummed UD discontinued those blushes. I have the neon pink and I remember the purple one being beloved by early internet alt girls. I think if they re-released that purple one, they might be able to capitalize on the heavy blush trend we're seeing right now.
Honestly, Smokey Glow and Sierrra Schultzzie are the only 2 glowmas/vlogmas channels I am watching this year. ♥ ♥

Afterglow is like that aura you get after copulation... and since they had the whole Naked line and I think that naming scheme falls in line with Afterglow
The "After Dark" idea for the blush collection is so insanely good. Guarantee if they had managed to think of that themselves, they would have chosen it. I'm picturing a futuristic club with neon lights that match your statement blush as you wait outside for a fresh looking guy to eat because you're also a vampire. I need to calm down.
