    FAQ
    ☆ How are you studying abroad in Korea?
    I received a full scholarship from the US Department of State through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) (www.nsliforyouth.org/). They offer US citizen high school students scholarships to study critical languages.

    Sony ZV-1 and iPhone SE

    4 years now! I mostly self-studied through Talk to Me in Korean (talktomeinkorean.com/), but then I also studied abroad in 2021 for two months.

      I hope everything worked out! I'm a former RD for the NSLI-Y Seoul program and can confirm that it's an amazing initiative :) This year, I'm running a program called Seoul SPARKS where high schoolers study at Seoul National University for college credit. We also give partial scholarships to NSLI-Y semifinalists so if you are still looking for a way to come to Korea lmk :)

    Oh wow I was the RD for the 2023 summer program in Seoul and we also used Hi Seoul Youth Hostel, but for the end of the program after all the students moved out of their host families' houses! I'm going to be directing my own summer program in 2024 called Seoul SPARKS and I'm trying to think of special things we can do at orientation, so if anyone has any ideas please comment here ToT I was also an exchange student in Korea during high school so I want to do everything I can to make the experience special for my students!

    Korea is so beautiful! I'm currently in the process of applying for the summer, do you have any tips for the application+essays and the interview?

    ty for posting these! quick question, did any of the people accepted to the academic year program have no experience speaking korean? i'm interested in applying to this as a gap year next year but i wasn't sure whether priori language experience was necessary

    • @JourneyofaLi
      @JourneyofaLi  Před 9 měsíci

      no, no prior language experience is necessary! we had 4 people who didn't have any

    i m really interested in doing this next year, how much Korean would you learn if you were to go into the program with little to no prior experience?

    • @JourneyofaLi
      @JourneyofaLi  Před 10 měsíci +1

      you get to about a low intermediate level by the end of the year usually! so like you would be able to comfortably have a basic conversation at least and generally understand what’s going on around you!

    hii this comment is so late but I was wondering, once you get to Korea, are students able to travel around to places together without their host families, so just as a group?

    • @JourneyofaLi
      @JourneyofaLi  Před 8 měsíci +1

      no, you are not allowed to travel without an approved adult (i'm pretty sure it's always your host family) :(
