- 2022 Hyundai Elantra N vs Hyundai Kona N review by The Straight Pipes. The Hyundai Elantra N Manual is putting down 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque and the Hyundai Kona N DCT is putting down 286 horsepower (in NGS mode) and 289 lb-ft of torque from a 2L Turbo 4 cylinder. At $37,999 CAD for the Elantra and $39,999 for the Kona, which one would you pick?

That Schfifty-Five referance, I honestly wonder how many people caught it. That was a YT throw back lol.
I got a Kona N over the Elantra N because of the seat. All things considered the Kona N is impressive. It's really fast and handles better than you might imagine. I don't have any regrets taking it over the Elantra N. I just wish we got the I30 N here in America over the Veloster N.
Not giving us the I20 N or 130 N is a travesty.
What's good about the i30 N?
@@VancouverViralVids its basically the elantra hatch on N
@@VancouverViralVids 4 doors and more leg room then both the Veloster and Kona and also more cargo room and I think it's lighter then all 3 of them.
@@dnegel9546 probably not lighter than the Veloster N, but then you get four real doors, a usable hatch AND a manual transmission!
Anyone who owns any N knows they’re absolutely incredible
Hyundai is junk.

I own a Kona N. This car man…. Make me smile like no other cars. I prefer Kona N for the height, he have crazy winter around here. So a car isn’t the best. Love my kona N
It's basically a car tho.
That's sick it should handle fine with all that power.
The Kona is basically a car though. Aslong as you're running snow tires there's no difference between a fwd car and a fwd SUV except ground clearance, the car theoretically would perform better because it's lower to the ground.
@@biggranny000 and the ground clearance on the Kona is not even that much better. It's just the sitting position that's higher.
Hyundai's been killing it. Absolutely murdering the industry.

I would never risk kids in such as unsafe car as something this crap. Have a close look at how it is put together and then compare that to a Toyota product.
@@DEVILTAZ35 I did and the Hyundai is a better car… The Toyota interior is as cheap as a hyundai like i went to their factories in Ontario since I went to school for engineering. The build quality has gotten better so they’re the same the only gripe you can give is their non 2.0L engines…

Great job as usual fellas. And I very much appreciate the Schfifty Five reference.
I’d buy a Jakuri C, manual only of course
Been waiting for this!
Yeeeees ! I’ve been waiting for you guys to review the Kona N !
Crazy but true, the "lowered it to make an N" statement in regards to the Kona is untrue. The Kona N actually rides HIGHER than the standard Kona. Look it up if you don't believe me, super weird.
The ground clearance, not the height. Aero bumpers have a lot to do with that i believe.
@@PHaddaway The overall height of the standard Kona is 61" and the Kona N is 62". The Kona N's overall height is taller.
@@veritaz212 Kona N is 61. Kona is 61-62 depending on rails or not. I'm dropping mine anyway regardless 🤷♂️😅
I think with having had both of these tyres on my i30N 2k18 i can honestly say the Michelin PS4S makes the car way calmer and absorbs the road better than the Pirellis...So your stiffness test is down to that mostly i think.
I couldn’t be happier with my Elantra N. It’s the perfect blend of daily drivability and sportiness. I’ve seen some dynos from the dct showing over 300 hp 🤔
It seems like manufactures are low balling their power outputs. Heard the new wrx has 245hp at the wheels. Which means 300hp at the crank. So that Elantra N has to have 300+.
320+ hp lol
@@throwingdartsandbreakinghearts I highly doubt that, 245 at the wheels with awd is like 320 at the crank, and Subaru tends to overstate their performance
These cars absolutely do not have 300 whp.
@@AntFragale have you driven one? Its uderrated asf
I have 2 car seats in the back of my Veloster N, ages 1 and 4. No issues getting them in or out. Yes, 4 doors would be more convenient. But I absolutely love my Veloster N.
Good to know. I have my first kid on the way and I want a manual hot hatch for my next car. Was definitely worried about the VN’s car seat situation though.
Not gonna lie, getting the 1 year old in a reverse car seat in that small passenger rear door is a bit tricky but I got used to it quick. Once she is old enough to be forward facing it will be much easier. My 4 yo sits behind the drivers seat and I just move the seat forward and she climbs in.
@@Bp2181991 you'll be sorry we'll frustrated. Also in an emergency it can be dangerous.
@@dnegel9546 It works out fine plenty of space lmao
Im really thinking about buying a Veloster n and i did a test drive on it 2 times. So how is the car with you in general? And Do you really recommend it over the elentra n ?
I’m totally with Yuri in taking the Veloster of the N triplets we get. Sucks that it’s getting killed :(
Would be nice if we had the i30 N here
@@Guy_on_CZcams it’s less that North America hates hot hatches and more that North America loves SUVs. That reasoning right there is why we have a Kona N and not an I30 N. Like we even had the Elantra GT N-Line, so close to an Elantra GT N but nope, had to opt for SUVs
The Veloster N hasn’t been announced to be going away. Only the other velosters!
@@oriondewitt they at least need to do something with it, it still has the older version of the 2 litre N engine and it needs a facelift too. Palisade facelift just got announced and the venue should get its facelift soon considering the Kia Soul just got its facelift revealed. Those three were the only Hyundai cars they’re continuing to produce that have the older version of the cascade grille.
Plus there have been rumours that Hyundai is supposed to be building a production mid engined hatchback or coupe based off the RM19 race concept. I don’t think if they made something like that they’d keep the Veloster name.
Either way, kill, refresh, or replace, it’s a bit outdated despite being released for 2019 MY something has to happen to it, and I personally think they’ll kill it :(
I really need to grab one of those manual Elantra GT N-lines before they get too used. Then one day I'll transplant a whole N drivetrain and some suspension bits into it, and voilà!
@@Spr4ng yeah you might as well, whenever people start trashing them you’ll see N 2 litres in scrap yards everywhere

Funny, I was just watching your channel YESTERDAY thinking to myself "I really wish they'd do a side-by-side review of the Kona N" (I'm considering a Hyundai N car but can't decide which one) so thanks for reading my mind I guess. Great content as always.
This is the one of the video's i was wishing for. Finally I can make my decision to get witch one..
Thanks for the review! Glad Yuri onboard with the Kona N existing lol
This was a really great side-by-side review. Thank you for being one of the few car reviewers to actually know how to use the N Custom settings.

Thank you! I wanted a comparison video.
I see N and click immediately!
Too many crackles and pops??? Never get tired of that!
really debating on one of these two...
Elantra N: cooler seats, sunroof, but has brace in the trunk
Kona N: seat doesnt light up, no sunroof, but fits my daily driver needs or storage
Woah seeing you go down that hill on Appleby threw me for a loop when talking about ground clearance
Holy crap I've never been so happy to see a budget performance car with a decent infotainment
I wish they had a Elantra GT N, they did have a N-line (which I have) More cargo and leg room than the Veloster and 4 doors, and more room than the Kona. Really nice interior too. They do have it overseas as the "I30N". I really want to upgrade to one of these vehicles in the future, it'll be a huge performance upgrade, I would never buy a Kona though as I hate SUVs.
Friend has a 2012 Sonata that caught on fire while her mechanic was driving it after a maintenance schedule.
@@atmark666 my friend has a 2018 GMC truck that caught on fire in a parking lot. Nothing was parked near it and he had just shut it down a few minutes earlier.
Point is: any vehicle (EV included) can catch on fire. Because people are so focused on Hyundai/KIA now every fire makes the news.
The GMC Sierra truck didn’t make the news. The tow truck driver said he had seen others spontaneously combust.
Your friend’s experience may be due to the mechanic not repairing the vehicle properly. The high pressure fuel system must be fixed per manufacturer’s specifications.
This platform is absolutely nuts. I just managed to get myself a 2022 Veloster N, Performance blue, Manual. Had 11K miles. I've had it for 3 days and I am so shocked how well it performs and how good the stock exhaust is. SO FAR, I feel it's the most perfect hot hatch...
My next purchase will be the Elantra N. I absolutely love it!!
As a couple who owns both a Veloster 22DCT and a 23 kona N we love them both and go for runs together all the time 😊
The Kona N makes perfect sense for people who live in areas with really bad roads but still want a sports car when you hit good pavement. Had I bought the elantra n i would have ripped the front bumper off 500 times by now.
Exactly what I just told a guy above saying the height of the KN is pointless
Where I live we have bad roads and a ton of snow during winter. I had an Elantra N Line before my Kona and snow was always hitting under the car.
Whenever I see the two of you together I think of Mallrats when Brodie says, "Hey, I tried to teach you how to handle comics in the sixth grade, but oh no. You wanted to play little league." I think of Yuri saying it to Jakub.
cant wait to get my kona N next year upgrading from my 20 VT ultimate
Well done guys 👍
Interesting timing, So was this a little fun comp with Savage Geese or an international collaboration?
Kona N is my daily. Love it! Torque steer is a feature and was left in. Traded in my Veloster N for it. I’m 6’2” the Veloster I would hit my head every large bump. Kona has more tech, power driver seat, more head room, bigger more comfortable seats. Both cars are great for the money.
Honestly I really about to do the same thing is it really worth it?!
@@swift_star6515 I have owned many hot hatches from amg gla 45, mini jcw, mazdaspeed3, GTI’s and the Veloster n. The Kona n checks all the boxes, fun, practical, sounds fantastic, drives raw, great road feel and heavy steering. It’s a badass ride. And when your in eco you can get 30mpg too.

Can we get a stand alone review of the Elantra N phase?
I got a Kona N and I'm in love with it. Everything from the performance to the daily driveability. It gets me to work comfortably in Eco mode just like every other small crossover and on the weekends I throw it in N Mode and have a blast! However the suspension is still brutal even on Eco. It's livable. But should've been made better for American roads. Perhaps some all seasons would help with that. But im not trading performance for comfort
i only use ECO and N mode lol
@@yourmanzach2307 you can also make a custom N mode thats basically identical but wont lock out 7th/8th gear. Better for mpg
Kona N drivers are the type of Nthusiasts that actually use eco mode every now and then. Not me. I’m an N-mode all day guy. Ahem. Custom N-mode so that i dont break my back. Driving these in eco should be a punishable offense.
Change to 18in wheels when you get the chance. Night and day ride quality different
@@karmahunden35 mpg in eco is so nice though 😢
Thank you for doing the Kona N justice, I love my girl!!
They have access to a rear-wheel drive platform in the G70/Stinger. Wish Hyundai would take that setup and make an N car out of it. It'd be cool to have like a Sonata-sized, RWD N sportback.
Isnt the Stinger that already?
Front drive lose 10% of enginr power to the wheel. Rear drive 15% all wheel 20% so if the tire can hold the grip, front wheel is the most efective way to use power for speed. It means if cars have same engine power front drive car will be the fastest one.
@@youngmoon8762Not entirely true. The biggest problem with FWD is traction.
When you're doing fast acceleration the forces applied pushes down on the rear wheels and lifts up the front.
So FWD cars are losing traction while RWD cars are gaining traction under high load.
RWD cars also tend to have much better balance.
RWD cars can also exit corners faster.
That's why rear-mid engine cars are the most ideal. Minimal drivetrain loss, engine weight in the rear, and great balance. A shame no one can build one that's affordable anymore.
The Elantra N DCT would've won this
i have a 21 kona ltd (not n because it needs to be a family vehicle not a fun vehicle, sadly) but when i pull up beside someone in a sports car and make that eye contact that means we're gonna race away when the light turns green, i put it in sport mode and keep up with or beat them frequently, which is great fun. so much for it not being the fun car! :P very cool to see how the n options perform.
The Kona n actually isn’t lower compared to the regular Kona
"I'm Yuri, I'm Jakub Nnnnn...I'm going for a drive"

How is the FOX body these days ? Will we be seeing it soon ?
ordered the 2023 Kona N-Line can’t wait to see how it is they said it comes in august
I have also heard that you better keep receipts for all of your oil changes and they will be needed to be have done on the recommended intervals.
I have a N line and even though I don’t have a Kona N I’m truly still happy owning a Kona
Not in Toronto... But born in the late 80s with my Focus ST & Cottage in the Lincolnshire countryside.
AWD on the Kona is a $1,500 option and the the diff in the 1.6T can handle 800 ftlbs torque from the diff manufacture. So all it would cost more should be no more $2,000. They have all the hardware to do it.
Sold my e92 m3 competition that was my daily driver for 5 years for the Elantra N in performance Blue. Cant wait for it to arrive!
Wtf.....
@@TML34 The e92 m3 was the best vehicle ive ever owned, aside from a gt3/4 ill take it over any Porsche or Ferrari as well, but its a terrible daily, running costs and gas totaled over 1000 a month alone. I currently have my X6M until my N arrives.

Bruh…. This is exactly the review/mashup I was looking for. These guys are the best in the game.
Seems plausible that the DCT-equipped cars (NGS mode notwithstanding) make a bit more starch than the M/T version.
I honestly think the Veloster is the better choice. All they need to do is give all the technology and features from the Elantra N (such as the gauge cluster, huge infotainment screen), and it'll be a great buy.
Is reliability a factor when researching new cars?
Awsome review as always, guys! I use my Elantra N mostly for track driving and I'd love to have Kona N in my fleet so I have more versatility. Hopefully that happens oneday. :)
BTW, I've noticed Canada spec EN gets heated steering and sunroof in manual so I'm guessing it's close to a Korean spec EN. US gets neither of them. :(

@@Daveyboy_GolfR 🍻 You understand 👍

They actually did Not lower the Kona N at all.. it has the exact same ride height/ground clearance as the regular Kona
KIA did used to pull that crap with the Forte SX, saying it had some specialized suspension, but if you do a search for parts, all the #'s are identical with the base model.
Actually the regular Kona sits lower then the N 😅 someone measured them.
@@dnegel9546 does it really!?
@@Don-hw7ws yup. Is just the bodykit/lip makes it seem lower.
It does! They didn’t want to sacrifice the practicality of the Kona N by lowering it and it being unusable as an SUV. They knew the customer base in the market for a Kona do SUV things lol. Like go camping and off-road every now and then, things like that. Which is why some people buy SUV’s. They did not want to lose that aspect of the vehicle but made it overall more Fun!! Plus it looks cool lol
I just barely got my Kona and am very impressed as is from factory I just imagine after I do a bolts on 😊
They have lowering springs for the Kona N and it looks slick and like it should have been. A hot hatch.
I like the way the Kona N looks and it’s pretty cool that a company actually decided to make something like this.
I was considering a Subaru Crosstrek but now I’m considering a Kona N. The reason I was thinking of the Crosstrek was because the all wheel drive but I live in Florida and really don’t need all wheel drive. Hyundai has a much better warranty then the Subaru.
I wonder if in the future Tuners will be able to use the NGS button to overboost the car for more then just 10hp maybe something like 20/30 would be goood
Yeah, I really wish they would have boosted the hp to 300. 0-60 mid 4's would have been an incredible benchmark for Hyundai.
Just finished with my APUSH exam, best school-anxiety releaser ever

Okay but the i30N Fastback would make me sell my Veloster N because those body lines and styling are absolutely delightful. It's my "I wish we had X car from Europe" model
Most of the time when I am doing a pull I can never watch all the gauges close enough because she is ripping so hard.🤣 Very cool to see the built in dyno is really accurate to the wheel Dyno. 👍
I hope you guys get access to an i20N for a review!

My 2021 Kia Sorento AWD Turbo is super quick! I've been wondering if it is faster than the other Kia and Hyundai models since I have more horsepower and torque.
Can u talk about which has better steering feel out of the two
I'd love to see a Sonata N considering it already has an N-Line trim and the mid size sedan segment, despite the low volume of sales, has a huge void in terms of enthusiest options.
