My first real RPG was Final Fantasy 7. It was a great introduction.
The Daily Goat Show right 1997 & man was it sweet, haven’t played another since
My was a kh3
mine was wizards 101 loool idk if it counts
Same here - introduced millions to the RPG world
@@michaelwoolford best piece of media in the world!
South Park: The Stick of Truth. It's funny, so it will keep you entertained. It's combat system is simple, but deep enough to feel satisfying. It's a good, casual RPG that's accessible to new RPG players and entertaining for veterans.
Final Fantasy VII was my first RPG and i had no problems getting into it.Actually i loved it and it made me a huge fan of the genre (like millions other people :p )
Blade of Mird same here. ff7 changed my life
hell yeah ff7 was also my first RPG...i even played it without memory card because when i was a kid i dont know about how the playstation works, so i just bought the game and played it....I never get bored playing over and over again from the beginning! great game!
FF7 has the same issue as Ocarina of Time and Mario 64. They revolutionized their genres by setting the standards, and inventing most of the mechanics, that took them into 3d.
However, if you didn't play them at the time... well now they kinda look like blocky outdated crap.
Noah I heard somewhere that it’s going to be episodic and if that’s true then I’m not going to get it
Mass Effect 2 is an amazing RPG. I remember when I first played it on PC back in 2010. I was immediately blown away by how impressive the game was. I enjoyed it so much that I ended up playing it a second time on the PS3. The numerous planets that you visit are unique and diverse. The story is very well done. The voice acting is top notch. The choices and decisions that you make greatly impact the story. The characters are worth caring about. The combat is greatly improved upon when compared to the original Mass Effect. The campaign took me around 35 hours to beat. On top of that, the game came with 3 DLC missions which expanded the story. Thanks MetalJesusRocks & Kelsey. Keep it up!
South Park: The Stick of Truth would be a great first RPG because it has great turn based gameplay and it's really funny too
true - i will buy a ps4 just for the new one.
Dominic Francis only RPG I ever liked
I cannot recommend this high enough! The game literally IS a season of south park episodes it's not like the show it IS the show... But on top of that the RPG elements are absolutely amazing and the best part is you can block 100% of all the enemies moves to take like 10% of their damage... That's right... Every single one.... this is so much different than say chrono trigger where some enemies can take you from 999hp to 1hp in one move! So I freaken love the stick of truth and when the fractured but whole comes out I will beat it 3x over just like I did with the current one.
+Retro Game Blog
If your going to buy a PS4, get Persona 5. Trust me.
nope i only like south park, i'm ashamed to admit but i think its the only game i've ever completed.
For a First Person Shooter fan trying to get into Role Playing Games, I'd say Borderlands is a good introduction. It's an FPS but has RPG elements such as experience points, upgrading armor/weapons, quests, and the story isn't overly complex.
Good answer! Also Deus Ex series for similar reasons.
Michael Wolfe .You,sir, deserve a high five for that answer.
MetalJesusRocks I agree a thousand Percent with that statement XD
You upgrade by finding new stuff. And you have armour, it's just called a shield. It's just semantics.
i know im extremely late to this but i dont see borderlands as an rpg. sure it has some rpg elements (skill tree and a looting system) but it doesn't have true choice that i think is essential to an rpg.
South Park: Stick of Truth really taught me why people like RPGs.
same for me
any game similar to this?
@@artlover4120 yes, South Park: The Fractured But Whole.
Bought the game because of this comment, absolutely love it.
@@josephparker9983i just bought this game. Hope it's worth it.
man... when i dont feel so well i just turn on one of ya videos. not that i am not into gaming, but sometimes i just lean back and pretend i am part of your cool gaming friends... cheers mate!
I would recomend against starting with Chrono Trigger because everything you play after it will be a let down in comparison.

So true
Facts
no
True same happened with me in case of tactical shooters, I played arma series & completed em now I don't like any tactical shooter except any expansion of arma & games like cod & battlefield feels like childish
@@truepatriot3768 are the newer Arma games on steam good at all?
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the seven stars!
Final Fantasy VII , VIII , IX and X
you spelled 9 wrong lol
@@423raptunez9 lol thx for letting me know I fixed it with a quick edit
@@Stevey_B easy typo lol no prob
I've never finished IX, I was playing on an emulator an it malfunctioned so I got frustrated and decided I'd go back to it later hopefully with a legit copy. only played for like 3 hours. The cards in VIII were cool, X was fun. But definitely VII is a must. I think I'm going to try the Mario one soon because I've been trying to think of a good one to play, that's why I'm here lol
@@423raptunez9 Super Mario RPG Was the first I played and its one of my all time favorites! Highly recommend!
Metal Jesus rocks, love your channel! It's the best video game channel ever, thanks to you there is a lot of games that I didn't know the name to that you've helped me out with that I have found. So thank you for your videos!!!
Thank you Kelsey! MUCH LOVE for Costume Quest (1 AND 2)!
Great Choice!
I could listen to Kelsey for hours.
Then you should check her pod cast here in youtube, Game Blitz pod cast. However you'll have to listen to her annoying boyfriend too.
Best RPG for beginner : Pokemon RED/BLUE/YELLOW
COMPLETELY disagree, pokemon gold and silver should be the earliest anyone should play if they wanted to play a game boy pokemon, otherwise fire red/leaf green by a long shot
Agreed, RED/Blue/Yellow = glitchy
Gold/Silver/Green/Fire Red = best versions.
I think Pokémon black and white are great starting points
Dan Dawson no one can
Personally, I'll pick heart gold or soul silver.
Love the Akklaim shirt !! Alot of memories with my amiga 500 and of course MK 2 on floppy discs !
Thanks for making this video! I had the same question , cleared that up for sure
Fable the Lost Chapters (Original Xbox), South Park Stick of Truth (Xbox 360, PS3), Super Mario RPG (SNES), Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (3DS). All great games, but Fable is the one I'd never part with.
On a side note; they're right. If you haven't yet played Chrono Trigger you should really give it a play through!
I've actually been playing through Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga recently. The combat system really is one of my favorites ever, and the game is hilarious.
Love that Costume Quest was mentioned... such a great game especially with Candy Corn! :) Great video!
I really enjoy your videos man! Keep up the great work :D
Chrono Cross, although It's debatable if it's for beginners or not but I haven't played many RPG's and I love it!
Honestly to me the best recommendations for a entry level rpg to me are Super Mario Rpg, Paper Mario 1 and 2, Final Fantasy 9, Pokemon any of the main games, and lastly one that isn't maybe too entry level friendly, but that I adore Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic.
Also Blue Dragon is another good entry level rpg I can think of.
g1nobleteam I'd say start with FF7 over 9, 9 is actually pretty hard and slow despite what people say, and if you go into 7 it's a lot simpler and easier to understand since its been discussed more and people likely already know the characters.
Thank you for being honest.
KOTR is a great, GREAT rpg and especially so if you happen to enjoy the vast, long running storylines that the Star Wars universe is known to be famous for. Even though it's a pretty old game with a more "classic" style of rpg gameplay; KOTR has such an engrossing story that I never really had any issues with the game mechanics at all. I love me some good, old fashioned Star Wars games!
Chrono Trigger was the first and only JRPG I've ever played and I can attest to everything Kelsey said about it.. very good choices you've got there!
Kelsey and Metal Jesus ROCKS!! SO wanna visit Seattle.
I would recommend the pokemon games
I think the best RPG to start with is FF7. It's the game that got me into RPGs.
You are just amazingly awesome kelsey!
Great video! Not sure why I am just seeing this now 🤔?Though if someone is just checking out RPGs for the first time, I think choosing one really depends on what style of RPG that the individual is interested in and what hardware they have. I would personally recommend starting out with Allied General from PS1 and Windows 95 which, was a successor to Panzer General for turn based style games and Ultimate Alliance for real time game play. Though my all time favor its are Shadow of Mordor, and Dragons Crown, for home console, and project Xzone on 3DS.
South Park Stick of Truth was my first Turn Based experience. I am thirty! So I had to go back in time and buy quite a few gems to get caught up. Cartman did a great job explaining combat to me. I think its a great place to start and its only 20 hours or so. After that omg have you got some amazing holy grail type games to choose from. It's really about getting hooked on the genre the first two. Then its off to the races.
South Park is another great beginner's RPG! Maybe even a better choice than costume quest, depending on age and sense of humor.
We who are new to this genre have much to learn from you Lewin San! Have a fantastic Turkey Day to you and all of you in Washington!
I tried costume quest. Its freakin adorable! Thanks Kels!
Try super mario rpg for the SNES , you will feel right at home with it, it even has the timed hits mechanic
Indeed! I picked that up a few years back :) Koopa and Mario fighting together is pretty awesome! Shadow Hearts series for ps2 also has a similar mechanic. Criminally underrated titles.
Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest. It even says "Entry-Level Role Playing Adventure' right on the box. The music rules, too.
Yep, it was created for this very reason.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games ah yes! why was this not the first game that came to mind thinking of entry lvl RPG! i europe its just called mystic quest. dindt know it was final fantasy untill way later.
They didn't mention it because it was terrible. Sure, it was easy, but if their first exposure to a genre is by a terrible game, they won't play more. I wholeheartedly agree with their decision not to include it.
Samuel Miller It's not really terrible. The game plays fine, it's not broken or anything. It's "Baby's First RPG", for what it is, it's fine.
Totally agree. It is just terrible to people who played lots of more complex and mature RPGs before. As a kid and nearly a total newbie to RPGs (only played "Ys" on the Master System for a few hours before) it totally got me into the genre. So much I rented a imported copy of Final Fantasy II (US) from the local video library and bought a NTSC-transformator. There wasn't a lot of RPGs to choose from in Germany these days. Sweet memories of hunting...
subbed to see more of kelsey
Gotta love the Kelsey!
For beginners my top picks would be-
1) Kingdom Hearts
2) Pokemon any version
3) Golden Sun
4)Any Mario RPG
My favourite rpg is kingdom hearts because of its story and you don't have to grind
Golden sun is def not for beginners 😂
Im a beginner. I started Golden Sun, and its a struggle.
@@ArjanYoyoman Really?
I'd say it's the easiest rpg i mentioned... The games is only 20 hours long, and it has very simple dungeons, and boss battles. The sequel is a little more challanging as the dungeons are all 4x bigger... But other then that it also has really easy boss battles.
@@Slackmana Struggle didnt mean that is hard. Its easy. But i dont know what the heck im doing. How does this battle system work: how strong are my attacks, how does pp get restored, how are my opponents stats?
I dont want to need internet to figure those things out.
I dont know what im going, or where im going.
But its easy yes.
Chronotrigger and Dark Cloud 2. Two completely different type of RPGs.
The video i've ben waiting for! Nice!
I know one of my first RPG's was Sierra's Police Quest and then later Hero's Quest (later renamed Quest For Glory Collection). Hero's Quest especially got me hooked on RPG's. I loved the story in it and then different elements, like sneaking around town, along with the fighting system being very fun. It was recently brought out again on Steam with updated graphics.
It's still, in my mind, a very easy and interesting way to get into RPG's.
I'm embarrassed to admit I never beat Chrono Trigger. I remember going up to the final boss, but I could never beat it. Maybe I should play it again one day.
Replay the DS version, on a 3DS XL if possible.
You're not alone buddy.
Narata feel sorry for ya, the ending is pretty great :). Back some years ago I beat all the 14 endings on DS, was pretty awesome
Thanks guys! I think I will try it again. I have a New 3DS, so I'm hoping the DS version is cheap. :-)
it's about 20 dollars at gamestop without the case.. probably around 40 on amazon with box
I recommend the Phantasy Star series.
My first RPG was Super Mario RPG, which is fanFUCKINGtastic. It does a good job of introducing a lot of turn-based RPG basics to first timers, and surprisingly has a really engaging story. Not to mention some of the most memorable game music you'll ever hear.
The t shirt hit me right in the feels... right back to mk2 on the megadrive. Sweet nostagia.
Games like Secret of Mana and Illusion of Time/Gaia triggered my passion for RPG's.
Rubber Duck I forgot what made me love RPG's, but I think the Pokemon games and xenoblade chronicles made me love them
Secret of Mana (SNES) is what slightly opened the door for RPGs for me in 2003. Before that I was really anti-RPG mostly because of the style that usualy came with it. I had played Pokémon before but didn't consider it an RPG.
Skyrim!!!!how could you forget
Whilst Skyrim is awesome, it's not the best Role Playing experience. The RPG elements get watered down more and more with each new TES instalment.
True, but that's also kinda why it would be more fitting to a beginning RPG player though. It's still a bunch of fun besides the downgrade in RPGness and it might convince yourself to go 'next level' (aka more oldschool).
Skyrim and Fallout 3 or 4 are great answers.
Logical Phallusy you're either trolling, or you don't know what an RPG is. Whether you like it or not, Skyrim is an rpg
Edwin Scott you just listed exactly why it’s great for beginners
great video, keep up the good work
Love your videos MetalJesusRocks :) \m/ Keep on gaming brother
final fantasy IX nuff said.
Kingdom Hearts is a great one. It was my first RPG and I still love it :)
I'd say to give Final Fantasy Mystic Quest a try. It was originally released on the SNES. It Is literally a beginners RPG. The game is a basic my first rpg that was made specifically for U.S. players because the Japanese didn't think we were smart enough to play an RPG lol. It's a really easy JRPG and it's affordable at around $13 for the actual SNES cart. It can also be found on the nintendo eshop. Just be warned it's not the best game out there but as far as introducing you to RPGS and their mechanics I think it's a good pick. My second choice would have to be another SNES JRPG Illution Of Gaia. It's an action RPG so you don't have to worry about turned based fighting. The story is good and it's not too hard of a game. Illusion Of Gaia can be found around the $20-$25 price point for the SNES cart.
My first RPG was Suikoden for the playstation one. It got me hooked into collecting RPGs because of the story line and also the detail plot of being played out by someone you trust. Very good game. You meet lots of new friends and its a great adventure.
Dragon Warrior. NES
Hu Flung Dung it was my first RPG, still great and not too long or complicated. Really any of the DQ/DW games would be great starters since they don't delve into the more complicated crafting/class/training systems that other series have done. I'm growing tired of the other stuff and am more interested in the more meat and potato RPGs like DQ or the FF series up to FF9. Chrono Trigger is probably the best suggestion because it is o e of the GOAT RPGs and is simple enough for a beginner, but a great enough story for someone who's been playing RPGs for decades.
But DQ2 will turn you off from the series forever haha. I feel like both FF1 (best version: GBA) and DQ1 (best version: Super Famicom translated with english names) were great games, but then it got soooo clunky with FF2 and DQ2. They may have introduced new super innovative gameplay mechanics, but they were both a pain to play. I would skip them!!
My fave series. DW4 is the best.
You want them to suffer don't you? At least you did say DW3 XD lol
@@llendar nah true suffering would be having them play Wizardry 4. That game is pure evil, for example it's entirely possible to get instantly killed leaving the starting area of the first dungeon as you have a ghost stalking you in real time and it hones in on your location so you take to long figuring out how to get out of the first room he will end up being right by the door to the starting area killing you as soon as you step out. Oh and let's not forget level three of the dungeon being a complete literal minefield, the cryptic puzzles with even more cryptic clues like find the egrest which literally just means find the exit. Yeah Wizardry 4 is brutal and evil
MetalJesus nods so much he looks like a bobble head.
yeah he needs to ease up on the nodding, it makes the videos painfully awkward to watch.
HOT? Maybe I am getting old, but for me, Kelsey is cute, but not hot to me.
Alf Waibel No one asked, grandpa.
He's so metal that he always needs to be head-banging, even if it's very softly.
I was playing Paper Mario when I was really young and didn't even know what an RPG was. Definitely a GREAT introduction.
Great topic! I´d go with 'Skyrim' and 'Fallout', but your suggestions were pretty good too.
If only Squaresoft had released Chrono Trigger in Europe too, it's beyond understanding why they didn't (my country is a huge RPG and Japanese lover); And i won't mention Xenosaga, Chrono Cross and many others, if they could "HDfy" them and release them in Europe many of us would be in Heaven (and not downloadable only, we love packaged games, which is another issue in here despite this is the continent where games are at the higher price pfff).
if i were to suggest only 2 rpg id go for golden sun 1 and 2, because god dam i love that series
I bought a DS lite just to play those I beat the first one and started the second but stopped playing I turned on my DS today but I have no idea what to do I don't know where I left off I'm only level 19 so I didn't get that far into it.
can you tell me in what dungeon or village you are?
and i got it on wii u
Cristiano Esteves It's been months since I played when I started up the game I was in the middle of nowhere but I have reveal which means that I've already been to Garoh with the werewolf people.
well you could go to alhafra, through the yampi desert
Cristiano Esteves legendary
Great vid MJ!
i was just about to type mario and luigi or paper mario then you guys finally mentioned it. it's obviously the BEST to start out with, everyone is familiar with mario and luigi and you learn the mechanics.. but really alot of games have rpg elements.. metroidvanias, etc..
My very first rpg is.. suikoden 2. I guess that's jrpg, still it's so awesome and difficult for 8yo me
Yameteh!
Quite cool about certain games that were terrible, when you're an adult all of a sudden are very playable "why didn't I play this as a kid?" games.
Hands down one of the very best RPGs of all time. 8 year-old you had good taste.
What RPGs would you recommend for beginners to the genre?
I always enjoyed Fable the Lost Chapters, it's a simple non-turn based combat system with tons of great side quests and funny dialogue
Fifa 2016
MetalJesusRocks thousand arms ps1
Kingdom Of Amalur: Reckoning
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. I thought that game was fantastic and is in line with your recommendation of Mass Effect 2.
Great recommendations. All fantastic games for any level of RPG experience.
Hi Metal Jesus! Hi Kelsey! Mass effect 2 is an epic game!! Played it heaps! It was the first one I played of the series.
Dead space was the one I loved playing due to the excellant way the game pulls you in so well! Also scary as helll!
Can I marry both of you?
Not Jason. He is taken.
damn..
Nothing can stop me!!
Love potion?
shhhh... don't spoil my secrets!!
She never played Mass effect? HERESY!!!
I need to play it :[
I never played it either but i have the trilogy o.o
You should.. it may be the worst when it comes to the game mechanics..(though I actually prefer it's RPG systems to the later ones)..but it personally has the best story and world building in the trilogy.
I really enjoyed this style of video. Focusing on a single genre. Perhaps next time you could talk about 3D platformers, or puzzle games!
I just love Metal Jesus and his cast of characters!
Speaking of the devil, I was playing Mario & Luigi before watching the video
Superstar Saga?
yep
Great game
Great game
it was the first game I had with my gba when I was a kid
The Witcher 3 was the first RPG I played regularly.
I think it’s a good starting point.
woah, an Aklaim T-shirt, mah boii...!
As a non full rpg gamer here are my favorite(no particular order):
-Borderlands 2.
-Mass Effect2.
-the Pokemon saga but the best one are Colosseum and Gales of Darkness on the Game cube.
-Yokai watch.
-Skyrim.
-And the best one for me is NINOKUNI WRATH OF THE WHITE WITCH, man this game is amazing, I can't wait to play the sequel!
Also if you're really into role playing, you should also consider L.A. Noire, Heavy Rain, Life is Strange and the Mass effect trilogie. If someone can suggest me some games of the same types I would appreciate it! Thanks
Love that Opeth poster!!!
Skyrim...Suikoden 1 & 2...
Final Fantasy VI!
Earthbound and ME3 are two of my favorite games. Good recommendations!
I gotta say I really love Kelsey's hat
Skyrim, Witcher 3 easy.
knights of the old republic
More Kelsey!
If you're a fan of medieval/more traditional D&D style RPGs: Neverwinter nights.
This is the most faithful D&D video game I have played, it's really awesome! It's reminiscent of games like Baldur's Gate and Diablo, if you like these games and The Lord of the Rings/Silmarillion universe, or D&D tabletop RPG like me, you will love NWN
Also, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, the best Elder scrolls game in my opinion, thanks to the soundtrack and ambient lighting, it gives a perfect ambience for the game, incredibly immersive and pleasing. It can be a little old for someone who isn't used to play older games and is coming from consoles like PS4 or Xbox 360 or something, but with some modes and texture patches, that there are tons online dor download by the TES community, it runs as well as Oblivion
A good RPG y'all forgot was south park stick of truth. You monsters XD
mr tentaclepussiewussie The game was broken tho
Very fun game! Good answer!
You guys committed the unholy sin of the Mass Effect franchise is not only that you haven't played it yet but to me the sin is that you're playing Mass Effect 2 instead as a starter and because yes ME2 is fantastic game but in order to play ME2 you have to play ME1 first so you can fully start your quest to save the galaxy and learn about the characters from the beginning romance included. Although ME1 is not a perfect game while still being an incredible game but trust me it's rewarding while finishing the game and really worth the anticipation of playing ME2 and then ME3 if you're okay with the ending depending of who you are but either way the trilogy is incredible if you haven't played it play ME1 first.
I played and beat ME1 when it came out. Great story and characters...but the combat mechanics are very clunky by today's standards. Also those driving sections mostly SUCKED. My wife started on ME2 and had no need to go back to play ME1 because of all the backstory built into the game.
I played Mass Effect 2 before the first one and it didn't hinder my enjoyment of that game one bit. Honestly, the sequel does everything the first game does but better, so I don't think the original Mass Effect is necessary (aside from added context).
I would agree, that from the mechanic ME2 is superior, bit still the story you get to expericne, combined by the 2 games is the best one ever achieved in an rpg!
Yes the mechanics of ME1 aren't perfect by today's standards but you do get used to it very quickly and driving the Mako I didn't mind and I know it's not perfect but you really do get used to it along with the pacing even know it's slow why did I know this because I've played it multiple times and it gets a little better when you're all leveled up to level 60 and now you're ready to play ME2 so grinding doesn't become a chore if you really love ME1 like me.
22martinez1 I just enjoyed the story it had to tell and the different concepts and pieces of lore more than actually playing the game.
I definitely agree with Costume Quest. It even got a few friends of mine who didn't like the idea of levelling and turn-based combat into it because of the way it's presented. Other good ones would be Rhapsody (PS1 (remake relased on DS as well, haven't played that one though)) and Super Mario RPG (SNES).
There's also a few more "western style" RPGs that could work. I'd say something like Planescape: Torment could be nice. Yes, you need to read a lot in that game, but it's less focused on combat than a lot of other similar games. But if you want more combat, Icewind Dale, hands down.
Costume Quest is actually really fun! I am deep into RPGs, but I got to try Costume Quest 2 on my Xbox Game Pass and it was way more fun than I expected. I love the mechanics of changing costumes to get certain skills to bypass puzzles (kinda like Sly Cooper), and also for whatever battle skills you want. Really good starter!
Chrono Trigger is one of the best games of all time.
It’s on my list to play for the first time soon. Why does the PS1 version suck? In this video she says it sucks. Is that true?
@@thomasmaher6880 Not sure what the difference between the 2 are. I've only played on SNES. Back in the mid 90's. Lives up to the hype. Great story and playability.
MASS EFFECT 2 is a perfect game for me!! hes soooo right
Majestad BowseR iiii
what about mass effect 3? would you recommend it, or stick with the 2?
2 and then 3 ;)
It wasn't out when this video was made but I would absolutely recommend MIITOPIA for the 3DS as a beginner RPG. It has a slick turn-based battle system that both pays tribute to and massively overhauls the traditional turn-based RPG battle, and it has relationship mechanics too so your Miis can become friends both in and out of battle. Up to ten fully customizable characters (if you can make a Mii of them, they can be in the game), a ton of fun classes, and on top of it all it's hilarious. It's not just a must-play RPG, it is a reason to pick up the 3DS period.
Man, I can’t remember my first RPG. I played a ton of Dragon Quest back in the day along with the Monsters games. So good!
Go home now and play Mass Effect 2 :-)
ReplayTheGamez I agree with you whoa!!!!!!
I agree with you too!!!
I havent played yet :( just started to collect for ps3 for the past month, but i do have the mass effect trilogy.
kelsey looks so cute with that hat
If you're already into games like Metroid, then it might be good to start with one of the Iga-produced Castlevania games (started with Symphony of the Night, but the ones on GBA and DS are awesome too). They play a lot like the 2D Metroid games, but at the same time they also throw in some light RPG elements like experience points, leveling up, and equipping weapons and armor that affect your character stats in different ways. You can grind in those games if you feel like it but you can also choose to just git gud with the combat if you want more of a challenge. And there's no turn-based combat system, you just fight the enemies directly in real-time the way you would in any other 2D action game, so it's a lot less tedious, but often still pretty strategic. Great choice for anyone looking for a beginner RPG or just fantastic games in general.
Secret of Mana is an awesome adventure RPG that allows for multiplayer. Kind of like a more dialogue heavy Zelda game, but it opens the door for people who want to take active roles in the combat and those looking for a gateway into JRPG's. To earn a platinum trophy on the recent remaster requires some grinding, but if you're just looking to complete the story the grind is minimal.
What?!? PS1 version of Chrono Trigger is not very good? WTF? Seriously??It's the same SNES game but with added anime FMV cutscenes by Akira Toriyama. Why is this not good???
People complain about the long loading screens.
zolwikwkurwik I hear you, it's actually not that bad if you play it on a PS2 with fast disc speed turned on, and it's way easier and cheaper to get than the SNES version. Plus it comes with the best western localization of FFIV! Which is one of my personal recommendations as a good RPG to start with.
Loading....
Yellowdock Ooo Play the disc on PS2 or PS3 with fast mode. Or even the digital version (which is on sale right now for like 2 bucks) and it fixes that "problem" , plus I can play the digital version on my Vita. My Vita has SO many JRPG PS1 games on it
Loading on loading on loading slows it down. Plus the FMV cutscenes are very glitchy.
Please please please don't start Mass Effect with 2!
I did. No problemo.
While ME1 is my favorite, ME2 is probably a better starting point for non-rpg people. ME2 is 2 parts action game, 1 part RPG. ME1 is the reverse: 2 parts RPG, 1 part action game.
Dingoes Couldn't disagree more.
Jason Lee Yes you could...Try harder.
You people are forgetting this is a recommendation for people who are NEW to RPG"s.... Mass Effect 1 is my favorite of the series.. but ME2 is a FAR better starting point for a newbie to the RPG genre. ME1 has too many nuances that would likely frustrate a newcomer to the genre.
People, think of the perspective this video is made within.... ME2 is much more approachable than ME1 for somebody ignorance of how RPG's work.
please do a game room tour with kelsey!!

The Witcher 3, I have always had tons of rpgs in my collection, snes onwards, but i have always had a hard time getting into them, and the witcher 3 was the game that got me into rpgs, yes its long and a little complex but its presented in a way that just eases you into it. the combat is fun and controlled not just hacky or hold the button down. everything just makes the length welcome because its more becoming the witcher and making relationships and doing side quests, idk, to me its just perfect. I still havnt finished it 100% but i am loving getting everything along the way.
My recommendations for western rpgs:
Non-linear open RPGs:
1. Skyrim / Elder Scrolls Series (probably the best way to start into western rpgs, great world, great design, great interaction)
2. Fallout 4 / Fallout Series (basically Skyrim but with base building ... and a bigger focus on narrative for better or worse)
3. Kingdoms of Amalur (fun combat, great stylized art design, falls a bit flat in story, open but not as open as the two above)
Story-driven RPGs:
- Obsidian Games (Neverwinter Nights 2 especially with the first AddOn, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny ... also the more open Fallout: New Vegas)
- BioWare Games (DragonAge, Mass Effect), heavy focus on cineastic narrative, rather linear though
Games inbetween/ honorable mentions:
- Divinity Original Sin (one of my favorites, so many things to do, so many ways to do them)
- Dragon's Dogma (japanese open world action rpg, heavily influenced by western gameplay design but still with an asian touch to it, climb on monsters, kinda like a more forgiving darksouls)
Non-RPGs that can be played as rpgs:
- Minecraft
- The Sims 3 (don't get the fourth one, it sucks)
- ARK: Survival Evolved (and other similar survival games)
I suggest noobs start with Dark Souls... Do it! Yes, let your hatred flow through you.

Remember when Metal Jesus did his own videos?
I released the Atari Walkman video with just me in on Friday. Thanks for watching.
andgalactus1 what's wrong with having quests?
metal jesus is retro and true to what he likes. more power to him.
Remember when I remembered to remember how to remember that Metal Jesus did his own videos?
Justin Martin Is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?
i like it like i
Grandia makes a great starter, at least for JRPGs. The pacing is good, you don't have any annoying random fights and as long as you clear every map (enemies only respawn if you leave the map), you are not underpowered for boss battles.
So much yes for Chrono Trigger, my all time favorite jrpg
