  • I have been learning Classical Greek for a short while now. While studying intensively this week, and learning more and more words and some cursory grammar, I thought it would be the ideal time to do a video about my Greek learning resources, as well as the books that I would one day hope to read! Enjoy.

Good luck! I'm Greek, I've studied ancient Greek, but I still would not be able to read and understand a text properly and entirely. That's a major journey you've set yourself on!

if you ever want to start learning grammar, I'd recommend greek to gcse by john taylor. i think doing a specific course is a good idea bc u might not know where to start and it gets overwhelming. the grammar in lots of the bible can be quite straightforward, so a lot of the time its just vocab and maybe start with just learning the verb endings so u know who's doing what. i've been learning for 3 ish years now and im doing my A level at the end of this year. best of luck to you!

Hey Thanks Christina! I just picked up Greek to GCSE part 1 & the anthology for kindle. I will enjoy working my way through them. An A level in Classical Greek? Where are taking that? I didn’t know there was such a thing.
For the moment, I am just learning vocabulary a very basic grammar, but I think your recommendations will help greatly. There are several great channels on CZcams to help as well.
How is your comprehension of the languages coming along. If you would like to begin a correspondence to speak about some of the troubles I should look out for, I would appreciate that very much. I will leave it up to you, but here is my email Lewis1kirk83@gmail.com
Thanks again for the recommendations! 🙏

I have just had a browse through both books, and I think they will be instrumental in helping with grammar and comprehension! Thanks so much again 🙏

That is great what you do but i would like to help if you allowed me go and first of all find a good translation of a greek athor (not an English) that has translated the greek in to English Cratylos of Plato Iam telling you a greek, because only greek professors can give you the exact meaning of a greek world and especially the ancient greek, westerns professors many times misunderstand the meaning and they misled poeple in a wrong direction... Thanks for encouraging people to learn greek !

Do you have a link of the Craylos translation by a Greek native into English that you are referring too. As I am just starting out on my journey, I am happy to recognise some of the simple words that I am learning in a Platonic text. I can't even begin to contemplate the nuances of Classical Greek Grammar. But I am enjoying my studies and this is the most important thing. Putting in the time. Thanks for commenting, and I would be every interested in that Cratylos translation. Will be in touch in the future to ask about Grammar. Take care!

Question for any body that speaks Modern and Ancient Greek: I’m learning the modern Greek basics, so that I could learn Ancient Greek to read Plato. How much of Modern Greek do I need to know to just read Ancient Greek?

As far as I am aware, they are completely different languages, with different grammar.
I myself have learnt a little modern Greek to become familiar with the letters and words, but I think if you want to read Plato, you would need to study Ancient Greek.
There are two great work books called ‘Greek to GCSE’ that are very helpful. You can find them on Amazon. Good luck 👍

Do you like loebs' english Translations?

I do. But I have mostly studied the translations in the Hackett complete works edition. I think ideally one would read 2-3 different translations of each dialogue to really get a feel for it. 🙏

You can't distribute books (8:15) that are not in public domain! They are not yours to do that. That's wrong.
